Has passed away :( sad day for Australian sport
Such a young and promising player as well. To go like that at only 25... hard to find words
I'm shocked, awful news. RIP.
Hopefully everyone gets around Sean Abbott, too.
I always thought he deserved a spot in the squad.
I know this goes against some of my posts
but R.I.P. Phil.
RIP Phil Hughes
I still can't believe it.
Gotta feel for Abbott too.
So Sad.... Hope Abbott gets all the help he can too. R.I.P.
shattered
R.I.P buddy. Condolences to all associated and all involved. Tragic time
Part of me hopes they still play the First Test in some form.
Make it an exhibition match, invite players from around the world, and let people who want to play play. I think it would be fitting.
Absolutely devastated, almost teary right now. Met him a few times. Bloke had a flower-ton of talent and really was a rising star for our country, one of the more humble and respectable ones too. Will certainly be framing his picture I have with his autograph now. R.I.P Champ. :'(
Still can't believe it, RIP Hughesy.
RIP Hughesy.
Absolutely shattered with the news. Condolences go out to his family and fellow players.
Sympathies with Sean Abbott as well and trust he gets the support he deserves.
RIP Phillip Hughes

November, death in the Melbourne Cup and now a Shield match
There is sport and there is life, reminding us of how precious it really is!

So flat right now
You're a true legend Hughesy, always have been, always will be.

This tweet really got to me
@DanielCherny: 63 not out. Forever. Vale Phillip Hughes.
:'(
Still hard to believe. Everyone says he was a wonderful humble country lad. A young Aussie on the verge of getting back in the Test team. taken so early in his life. So sad for his family and friends. Also hope everyone rallies around Abbott. R.I.P Phil
Would have been his 26th birthday on Sunday too. :(

That day will be hell for his family. :'(
Horrible thing to have happened. Thought he was older than 25 (or nearly 26) which makes it even more tragic
They cant play the test now out of respect. Feel very sorry for Sean Abbott who wasnt doing anything except playing cricket, but now has to live with what has happened.
Thought this was a good tweet.

Tom Cooper would be an emotional wreck right now. Housemates, batting partners and best friends. Saw it unfold right in front of him.
Didnt think i would ever see something like this happen, shocked and feeling for his family.
RIP Phillip Hughes
From Reddit, quoted from Peter Lalor.
"Selectors had earmarked him as the replacement for Chris Rogers when the senior opener retires, but whenever it was suggested to him that the wait was dragging on he would smile and reply that he had plenty of time.
Nobody ever imagined that wasn't the case."
The old copy and paste strikes again
Oh flower off for flower's sake.
Speechless and gutted.
:'(
RIP
R.I.P Phil ☹
The Michael Clarke Captain this and that from the media shows how out of touch journalism really is, it is his friend, he did what he did because he loved that person, not because he had an image to uphold.

Can't believe he's gone. He was my favourite player and it is an absolute tragedy that Phil is gone. He would have gone on to be a great player.
It's tough to believe it all happened really, you just don't expect this kind of thing to happen on the cricket field and to happen so fast.
RIP Hughesy, you had a great knock mate, and you'll always be 63*.

Yes haven't we adopted him as our own :-[ just on the verge of a Test recall as well :-[
Yesterday was such an odd day, full of drama, a young man on the world stage lost his life and many other young men had their new dreams come true via the draft. Mixed emotions to say the least. Poor family has to deal with the fact his birthday was to be Sunday too :-\
I was quite impressed by the A League crowd which stood and clapped and chanted at the 63 minute mark.
Respect.

When sport comes together for a particular tragedy lovely things occur with such sentiment, the outpouring from many sports has been touching to witness.
His birthday tomorrow will be such a tough day. His Dad so proud of him, his Mum in all the interviews just adores him i feel for her i feel for them all.
I hope Abbott is able to take advantage of the support around him and not carry this to heavily in his heart.

from all reports Abbott is holding up quite well, Sutherland said he was very impressed about his maturity. Still, i cant imagine what he's going through, no doubt he will struggle with it for a long time to come. He would be also having some dark thoughts i hope his family and friends continue to rally around him as I'm sure they have done so far

Will definitely be hard for the family today and thoughts and prayers are with them today.
Four days on and it still feels surreal. Never before have I actually cried over the death of somebody I don't even know. Such a good player with so much to offer, and would probably be playing in Brisbane instead of Clarke. But more than that - just such a good bloke. The world is poorer without him.
Huge respect to Pakistan and especially New Zealand for their efforts in the Test match. Not sure about Pakistan, but I heard that New Zealand did not bowl one short ball for the entire match.
Praying for Sean Abbott as well.
Very Interesting observations from grade matches in Brisbane by Ben Cutting. He said that mood was very sombre in week end matches with a distinct lack of the usual banter and enthusiasm.
But more importantly the number of short pitched balls bowled for the weekend was well down and one match reported not one at all bowled. just shows this is having a far reaching effect on all cricketers in Australia and will obviously take time to get over.
One of the best suggestions I have heard for a permanent remembrance for Phillip Hughes is for NSW and SA to play annually for the Phillip Hughes memorial trophy with the trophy being designed on the putyourbatsout theme.
With the test series now scheduled to start with the test in Adelaide will be interesting to see the effect on the players especially with the Adelaide Oval now being Hughes home ground.

It is going to be huge. Day 1 will be absolutely packed and I'll be there for sure.
So is the Adelaide test definitely the first one now?
Phillip Hughes Cup is a fantastic idea. I also think there should be award for the best young cricketer should be renamed after Hughes, and presented at the Allan Border Medal.

I think it'll be more haunting for the batsmen at the SCG to be batting on the spot Phil died.
Next Shield match Qld v NSW will be interesting as it is scheduled for the SCG.
Test Series has been rescheduled:
1st Test - December 9-13 - Adelaide
2nd Test - December 17-21 - Brisbane
3rd Test - December 26-30 - Melbourne
4th Test - January 6-10 - Sydney
Now now now, come on. Let's not get carried away. Firstly, let me say I am just as sad as everyone else about this, and that it is a tragic event and everything. I feel for his family for Abbot and everyone else.
I read in the paper, someone suggested renaming the Riverbank stand the Hughes stand. Give Hughes a statue outside the ground. Now for real, the names up around the ground are greats, Riccuto, Wanganeen, Basheer, Bradman, Williams. Hughes was a fringe test player. That isn't necessary imo, he wasn't a god when it came to cricket. He was good, he was a very good guy, he tried, he never was in people's bad books, but he wasn't a legend to deserve that.
But NSW and SA to play for a Hughes trophy of some kind, that, I like. :)
Agree with you PB

Yeah a lot of people are very annoyed about it. I think they should have started it on the 10th (a Wednesday) to the 14th (Sunday), then delayed the Brisbane Test back by a day.
There's a growing concern amongst South Australians that CA are screwing us over, with no AUS Day game as well...
Luckily for me I don't have a full time job (just finished school) and I'm a SACA member so I don't have to rearrange tickets
I just hope Cricket Australia didn't prioritise corporate greed over the fans
Yet again, I have to say, we have no Aus Day game this summer because we chose to bid for a Quarter Final in the World Cup. Things should go back to normal next season.

I seriously hope so. But Melbourne and Sydney also bid for big WC matches (final and semi-final) and didn't have to give anything up
Personally, I think that the Australia Day match in Adelaide should be held in the same regard as Boxing Day in Melbourne or the New Years Test in Sydney.

Agree here there are some traditions that have been started and deserve to be continued.

Sydney the New Years Test

Really happy he'll be at Phil's funeral, i wasn't sure if he'd be able to cope. Will be an extremely tough day for him no doubt but glad he'll be there. The outreach of everyone towards him is wonderful and i hope he feels that to the maximum tomorrow and it helps him deal with the issues that have arisen for him since the tragedy. Must be very hard.

I hope we name him in the first test, who cares about winning, we'll win the next three anyway, but he should be named in the first test.
In terms of honouring Hughes in the Adelaide Test, I've seen numerous ideas floated about on social media but here was one..
India bowls the first ball with Warner up the bowler's end, and no batsman at the keepers end. The symbolism of not having a batsman there would be to have Phil Hughes' spirit out in the middle.
Then Rogers walks out and play proceeds as normal.
Name him official 12th man.
I'd be careful about doing something that distracts the players even more than they already will be

Peter George in his grade match on Saturday This was the action he took.
He said to the Batsmen I am going to bowl a bouncer first ball to get this out of system. note he even told the batsmen.
ran in not his usual energetic run up and bowled a Bouncer which pitched closer to his feet than the batsman and looped well over the batsman's head, Did not bowl a short pitched ball again. Probably gives you the physche of fast bowlers at the moment.
On another note I am totally disgusted with reports of low lifes stealing bats throughout Australia that have been put out to show support.
One thing is for sure... First game is going to be very interesting to see what happens...

What does his rep against the poms have to do with anything? They are playing India...
Well, face it, Johnson only took wickets because he bowled short. :P India won't be much better at facing the short ball.
I say keep bowling it, they have to. Think about how many bouncers have been bowled in the history of cricket, and how many bouncers have hit batsmen. As Clarke said "we must play on"
Johnson terrified (legally) the Poms last summer, I hope he does the same against the Indians.

the Indian XI bowled bouncers in their game today...so I guess they will be bowled.
brave move by India to openly bowl them
I mean bouncers were bowled regularly for how knows long since the last death (which I assume probably happened when helmets weren't used) so I'd be disappointed if they do give it up.

Correct move. Hughes was a tragedy no doubt, but it was also a freak accident, the only time we have on record of a bouncer killing someone The chances of it happening again are so so minuscule it was be overreacting, and also takes away an important weapon in a fast bowler's armory.
I'm glad the Indian's bowled them. Last thing we need is for batsmen to think that bouncers will not get bowled for a while and then the next bouncers hits the player in the head coz he's not expecting it.
Let's play cricket

agree, I just mean India are in trouble because Johnson will be thudding them in half way down like he did to England..whereas it was a touchy subject whether they would be bowled and in what frequency
let india bowl first if we win the toss? they can take the focus away
thats always the plan when playing in Adelaide anyway :P
