Title: FF redesign, restart of the blog (and new logo!)
Post by: m0nty on October 09, 2014, 09:17:10 PM
I have been working hard already this offseason to implement a new design for FanFooty. The results can be seen on the front page, as well as other parts of the "main site" - i.e. not the forum yet, that will come later. I just got done fighting with Wordpress, but SMF (the forum software) is a whole other beast to tame.

From next season, I will be posting player news, blog logs and chat logs in the FanFooty blog, for those of you who like to use such things with RSS/Atom feeds. Those resources have been obscured a bit up to now, they deserve more prominence. Not sure whether I will start writing longer blog pieces again, as that has tended to burn me out in the past... I have been trying to train myself to post smaller items, which I haven't got the knack of quite yet.

I will also be making more use of the FanFooty Facebook page in 2015 to post from the blog and cover breaking news, which I would encourage you to join... too much discussion of AFL news is barely enough!

There is a new FanFooty logo as well - not much different I know, mainly just a clean up and moving the FF from the original Impact font to the DIN font which is now standard for headlines across the site - it's the same font used on the MCG scoreboards.

I am also working on expanding FanFooty to other sports in 2015. Watch this space, especially in the next month or so for a particular summer sport.

One thing I would like to do is work more on pushing the great stuff that you guys do here on the forums onto the main site. Many of you do sterling jobs on player profiles, news linkage, lower league coverage, and other things that it would be great to see on the front page. If some of you want to have a think about which things you'd like to see merged with the main site, I'd love to hear some brainstorming in this thread. I will be watching it and responding.

I realise I had let the site go a bit stale this year, if not for a couple of years. New wife, new house, new baby... I had a lot of things going on this year, and still do, and it will only get more hectic. No one is more disappointed about that than me. I've managed to find some productivity just lately, however, and hopefully I can ride it to finish a bunch of projects I've had on the back burner for too long.

Thanks for reading this far! You guys are the best.

Awesome m0nty :D :D :D.

As for the player profiles, reckon they deserve a spot in new blogs/actual player pages for that season (if not too much effort). Think it was a suggestion a few years back as well.

That and reckon quite a few guys on here could do a decent blog here and there for the main site. Can be casual writers who can add to the main site, upon your approval after you read their pieces. Certainly can add a bit more into others taking some load of yourself during the season while still putting out quality pieces for the blog!

Looks pretty good m0nty.

With the new home page of the site, you currently have "Latest Forum Posts" that links to the main index of the forum. Would you be able to change it so that "Fanfooty Forum" links there instead? Increases useability IMO.

Great stuff though :)

This particular Wordpress theme does allow links on the widgets generated from RSS feeds, but not other ones, dangit.

Oh, and I forgot to mention there will be a new "matchcentre" page which will have the option to view chat and/or blog on the same live stats page.

Like it m0nty. Particularly drawing attention to the forum and XV games from the main page. Loved your suggestion about using some of the forum users to contribute to the main page. We have some fantastic footy brains on here!

Layout looks perfect to view on mobile devices or tablets, but seems to position itself poorly on my iPad (huge strips of blue up each side and the actual page very small and needs to be zoomed into). Possibly just my device but thought I'd put it here in case anyone else finding the same thing

Surely we won't have the team picker until after the drafts? No point in throwing up something half finished.

Yeah, one attraction of the new layout was how it was responsive to different device widths. Still needs some tweaking, evidently - I see the problem, caused by the ad boxes. Hmm. Thanks for the heads up.

Traditionally I have the Fanplanner up pre-drafts including a large pool of likely draftees, and make some educated guesses about the first round order to generate price premiums.

Links to individual boards are in the dropdown. I was thinking more along the lines of personal favourite pages you keep going back to that aren't boards.

I turned off the extra thing on the side that was screwing up the layout on tablets etc.

I'll have to get some help from the theme creators on how to fix it, I suspect.

Two issues since the new format (looks great by the way Monty).

1. I play Mr Football on chrome - games won't load.

2. I tried to use IE to play but I can't log in on the FanFooty front page with IE as there is no login button.

Am I missing something?

Edit: I worked out how to log on with IE, but games still don't generate.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but when I go to a players page, then click on the link to their stats and fantasy scores for the games they played that season, all the results are now squashed together and extremely difficult to navigate

Fixed that one, thanks.
Can I assume that MrFootball is low on priority at the moment?

I will get to it some time this summer.

Do not know whether this is Firefox related or not but when you hover over the tabs at the top the boards are hard to read being superimposed over the Hawks premiership team.

Also how do you log in to tools due to issues my log on is different to FF and have not been able to get in there.

Will be one of the first to buy your game when it floats mate. Love it.

when viewing a players profile we used to be able to search for another player on that page but the box seems to have vanished on profile pages  :-\

It's still there, at top right on the black menu bar. There's a "Search" box for the blog and a "Player" box to search for player names as before.

Love the new front page m0nty. An active blog dominating the front page adds a whole new dimension to the site. Good job  ;)

Did whoever it was that won that fanfooty hat a few years ago ever receive it?

I think that's the number 1 burning question on everyone's mind.

Thought I'd continue this as a week after :P.

By the way, from an anonymous user, they mentioned that the front page looks a bit cluttered with everything on there and alot going on. Given some may like it, some may not, can't please everybody :P.

It's a complex site with a lot of things in it, of course the front page has to link to them all.

As for the cap, it's currently looking down at me from the bookcase in the study. So I guess I didn't send it out.

Who won it and what for again, ive forgotten lol.
Would be good if a few of these could be handed out for various reasons, often thought about having a T-shirt made up.
"Fan Footy #1 Fantasy site in the land" on the front with "Let us help you with your Fantasy" on the back.  :P

I honestly can't remember either hahahaha. Was a competition of some kind or was it with the point systems we use to have going?

Don't think there ever was a winner announced to be honest.

Watch out, any of us could receive a cap in the mail soon.

It was for answering a survey on the FF front page IIRC.

Answer survey - winner picked at random kinda dealio

Yes Ric there are a number of omissions that we all think may be there so we wait with breath. until announced.

Zorko is another Brisbane left out and obviously if Taylor is forward onlyo so should Zorko.

Do not think Mayes should be mid only and with return of Berger martin should retain R/F as well but a little hard to argue that one atm.

Remember this is m0nty's educated opinion at the moment and there will always be cause for argument.
