Reigning Jack Dyer Medallist Daniel Jackson has announced his retirement from AFL football, effective immediately.
Wow, didn't expect that. :o
he was named this weekend but guess he wont make final 22?
I honestly didn't expect this at all, thought he'd go around for at least one more season, but I guess injuries have taken their toll. :(
I daresay Foley might stay on then for a year or two and we might definitely play hard for somebody like Dylan Shiel now.
This the 'star' who had a falling out with his coach?
Some talk about it, for the last few weeks but I thought he'd go around for at least one more year.
Only 28, so it's a shame.

yep, Lennon has replaced him in the 25man squad
Wow out of the blue , any reason given ? on the plus side that means another spot for a young bloke nice ;)
As if he wouldn't retire after finals and aim to get fit?
Wow, hope there's not more serious issues going on here like a Mitch Clark situation.
Thats a shame he had his best season only a year ago.

Said he didn't want to get picked, and then not be able to make it through the game which would hurt the team
28 is young, but his injuries are hampering him it seems
oh wow... that is the biggest surprise of the off season (more than Ryder and Lumumba) so far...
Wow LF just PMed me about this. Very shocked

Yeah fair enough.
I half expected this to happen, so not that surprised tbh (called it a few weeks ago in one of the threads).
Jacko is someone that has got the most out of himself as a person on the field, but is obviously very involved in the wider community and is quite public that there is still a lot he'd like to achieve with his life off the field. That run of injuries earlier in the year had me thinking that if he couldn't get himself right by the end of the year that this could well be his last, so he can go ahead and pursue his off-field goals.
Well done to him, as he definitely got the most out of himself as a player. Big decision to make on the eve of finals, but have to respect him for making that call
There has to be more to this that were not hearing.
He hasn't been a player that's battled injuries his whole career. He only just came good last year and won the b&f.
Granted he's had some bad luck with injuries this year but he's only 28 and could have potentially played another 4+ years.
Plus he was named in the extended team so must have been close to a return. Maybe didn't want to hurt the team this week but what if we got through and he could be ready next week?
I know he's battled with depression in the past so perhaps that has something to do with it? Just doesn't add up. The timing is very strange.
