Title: Round 18 - Lions v Suns - Saturday 26th July - Gabba
Post by: Ringo on July 21, 2014, 02:08:01 PM
Q Clash 8 - Q7 was a somewhat spite-fall match with some suspensions coming out of the game but Suns prevailed by 53 points in what Leppa has described as worst display of season. Can the Suns bounce back after last round defeat and without Ablett or will the Lions continue to lead the head to head in Qclashes?

There's plenty of value around this wkend and I really like Brissie at $2.80

Love the Q clash, should be a good one.

Suns will be pretty determined to show they're a good team without GAJ in the side.

The suns just have to win this. The view around seems to be that they have proved enough this year regardless of weather they play finals or not but I doubt that's the view internally. They will come out firing and should get the win

Think we're a very good chance here against a Gaz-less Gold Coast outfit

Hopefully all Q-Clash (ugh, that name) matches can be good games regardless of ladder positioning

Lions by 7 points

Lions have won 5 out of 7 Qclashes and want to remain the dominant side. Couple of the boys made it clear yesterday that they would like nothing better than putting a real dent in Suns final chances to remain the dominant Qld team. Rivalry really now starting to build and look forward to the day when it matches derby's of other states.

First game this year has a few spiteful incidents so Brisbane need to show control.

Just hope the predicted change with rain and thunderstorms comes through after the game and not during. Pity the NEAFL clash between the 2 sides is not a curtain raiser.

Suns are favourites with the Bookies but can smell an upset with Rocky set to bounce back and repay team mates for his brain fade causing suspension.

Big chance Michael Rischitelli won't play tomorrow. Didn't train today and elevated rookie Louis Herbert was presented jumper Pre training

Not fantasy relevant but if turns out to be correct takes further experience out of Suns line up.

Kinda feel bad for this kid, seen a couple of comments like this.

He's a medium sized player who can play both ends. Had a good season in 2012 and got overlooked in the draft that year, then went back to the Rebels and had another good year in 2013 and was deserving of being picked up.

Do you really think he wiil be there next year he needs to go back to NRL so they still need to get or train up a tagger

You don't need a tagger just to win games of football without Gary Ablett.

They don't need to switch anything, they were obviously going to make the finals before he went down so they'll just start again next season

Two things that I can say after that is the Suns need at least one good tagger , Rockliff is getting into that area of being not being able to be tagged
Hunt did a bit of tagging last year didn't he? Was half decent to from memory.

Do you really think he wiil be there next year he needs to go back to NRL so they still need to get or train up a tagger
He'll go to super rugby :P

They don't really need a tagger, Hawthorn dont tag, but they're up the right end of the table. Stanley doing run with roles is good enough imo.

You don't need a tagger just to win games of football without Gary Ablett.

They don't need to switch anything, they were obviously going to make the finals before he went down so they'll just start again next season

Every team needs some one to try and stop damaging players call them a tagger or a run with player whatever but Hanley and Rockliff and even Zorko tore the Suns apart and they had no one to stop any of them  ::)

Just back home from the game and my first comment is where has that start been all year.

Comments are correct in that Hanley was left to run Broughton tried to go with him a couple of times but apart from that no real tag. Hanley rightfully won the Marcus Ashcroft medal.

Danny Stanley was running with Rocky all night but he really towelled him up.

Close showed he has the potential to be the spearhead we are looking for in Browns absence.  Merrett is not the short term answer either as his kicking for goal his rs.

Zorko, Green and Taylor showed what they can do when they work together and will be the key to Brisbane's attack going forward.

From a Suns perspective first look at Jack Martin and he really needs to put some beef on if he is to make it. Did not inspire me. O'Meara was running with Zorko a fair bit of the time as well and he showed he could not match Zorko for speed of the mark. Suns appeared to lack some direction and is this a result of no Ablett or no one standing up when needed. If Rain had not come think score would have blown out a lot more.

Crowd of 27167 from memory will be our highest crowd of the season showing that the Qclash is starting to gain traction.

Reading through the thread I think a couple of comments concerning Herbert were uncalled for and a general warning to be careful and not get personal.

Crisp is another mid who has been tearing it up in the NEAFL and deserved promotion. He will obviusly be on the fringes when Rich and Reddan return.

Must have been an enjoyable game to attend Ringo have all the big scorers in SC but what is going on with the Suns I expected a good close game being a derby , the lions players were fantastic Rocky is very close to the best mid in the comp but the Suns what do you think is going on with them ?

Was an enjoyable game Shaker. My opinion is no one really stod up to provide leadership in Abletts absence.
This probably sums it up
"The Lions led disposals (125-35), marks (22-1) and clearances (17-6) in one of the most lopsided quarters of football in any game this season.  (These are the first quarter stats only.)

and from McKennas press conference "Said they were insipid, smacked and out-worked. Told journos to write story how they wanted and he had no answers'

So the Suns need to put some work in developing a leader post Ablett if they are to be a top 8 side. Prestia tried hard but both O'Meara and bennell went missing.

My only regret was the size of the victory meaning we may get further away from the bottom and away from key forwards in the draft.

How could Martin have played so little footy till this chance he is the complete ruckman at the moment  ???

Has always been decent.  Just often injured
Yep this and he was also stuck up forward, while Berger was playing.
Just to clarify Martin did not play forward while berger was playing as West was used in tandem with Berger.  Martin got his chance when West went down.  Lions match comittee will have a lot of soul searching to do when all three are fit. I believe if both West and Berger had not been injured Martin would not have played Senior football this year and was in danger of being de-listed.  Has put that to bed now.

I think they meant in the few games Martin played last year, ringo, when he was a spud.

Cheers mate seems like Gaz has gone and they do not know what to do , but am impressed with the lions they blooded some good young blokes and it all came together tonight had the 4 top scorers in SC with Rocky as VC so very happy , with Redden and Rich out it's all looking good and as for Martin where has he come from ?

PS saw the comments about Martin but I am amazed at his rise  ;)
