Might be without Gibbo this week. Shoey should be right to come back.
It was promising to see in the VFL that both O'Brien and Brand were named in the best, while Sicily kicked 3 goals. There really is a logjam of players looking to come in but Simpkin and Hallahan are the only ones that appear to have worries about their JS. After being an emergency, Hartung will either debut this round or go back to the VFL. Looks like Sewell is still a while away and Ceglar, Cheney and Spangher are no doubt keen to force their way back in.
One guy I'd love to see again is Grimley. 9 goals in his first three games and is doing a good job helping out in the ruck. Unfortunately it would probably take Hale or Roughy being injured/rested for that to happen.
Finally, it was great to see Shem Tatupu named in the best for Box Hill in the Vic Development League. Hopefully a sign of things to come.
So Grimley still ahead of Lowden? Luke named best on ground on the weekend, and named in the best 2 weeks ago. No stats for the weekends game yet, but in the first 3 was averaging 15 disposals and 29 hit outs a game. Can also grab a goal or two.

The whole situation with Ceglar, Lowden and Grimley is a bit of a shame. Awesome for Box Hill obviously and it's great to have that depth but for them personally I feel sorry that they're not getting more opportunity to advance their careers.
But yes, your point is taken. Lowden could just as easily be selected if a ruck/tall forward position became available.

The depth is amazing, but yeah it sucks for them not getting games. Hopefully the Hawks will give them a bit of a run over the next 2 years in preparation for our big guns starting to retire.
Gibbo free to play so not sure who makes way for Shoey. :-\

Yeah they certainly have some great ruck depth, which many teams would kill for, such as Adelaide (Jacobs and no one). It's interesting though since Lowden is in to his 6th season at the club but still hasn't debuted. So they must see something in him, otherwise why else would they keep him all this time?
Hawthorn's ruck history in the last 20 odd years is a very strange tale. From importing stars like Salmon, Rehn, Everitt, Hale and McEvoy along with lesser lights Johnson, O'Farrell, Skipper, Ceglar and McCauley. Then there were failures like David Loats and Brent Renouf, the more successful Simon Taylor and Robbie Campbell and the sad story of Max Bailey.
I think it's a position that a lot of clubs struggle with, not least of all because the big guys tend to get injured. Just look at Freo with Sandi, Griffin, Clarke and Hannath. That looks very strong on paper yet sometimes they've struggled to have two of them fit at any given time.
Can we really drop a midfielder for Schoey? I am really unsure how he fits in the team, does he join the backline with Lake, Gibbo and Stratts or does he play forward and swing when necessary? I'm leaning towards him not making the side tbh :/
I think Schoenmakers needs to come in to give the other guys a rest from time to time.
Maybe only against the teams with slow gorillas up forward - Cloke, Hawkins, Brown, Casboult, Darling?
Actually I am just still so happy that Gibson got off - from a football purist's point of view as much as a Hawk supporter
And that I have Cyril in my SC team.
One guy that I think could be feeling some heat on his spot is Matt Suckling. Just throwing that out there.
Guys how about Hallahan? Can he last 4 rounds?

I would say his spot is safe until Shiels and/or Sewell return. I think Shiels will be back the week after our bye, no idea on Sewell.
I am so jealous you guys got McEvoy, he is such a jet. One of my favourite players!

:o Interesting!
Suckling is going at a goal a game, I'd rather not lose that.
One more question guys, what the flower is going on with Roughy? >:(

I'd rather lose the facepalm-worthy turnovers from our supposed elite kicker. How opposition players can get simple intercept marks off his kicking (that isn't even a bomb forward) eludes me. Also don't like the zero level of defensive effort/pressure he provides (I understand this isn't his strength nor role and that Brad Hill won't be dropped because he can't ruck but I think every player needs to be able to chase and apply pressure when it is their turn).
Lol yeah, Suckling is good for two or three absolute clanger kicks a game but I see the value of a guy who can be taking kick in's one moment and be having a shot on goal the next. I also see he's ranked sixth in the league for bounces so he's breaking the lines well. Unfortunately we can extract Poppy's defensive DNA and give it to everyone. :P

I'm quite surprised at that running bounce count, without finding stats or looking over any of the games I'm just wondering how many of those bounces are streaming forward on a fast break and how many are touching the ball on the ground after skipping a few steps trying to make a decision about what to do, relatively unopposed. I think his 'metres gained' stat would be a bit warped due to his monster kick.
And I don't expect him to be Rioli or Poppy, but the guy has laid 6 tackles in 6 games this year (went to the stats column for that one). Including a total of 0 in the last 2 games!
Not just Suckers either, we have gone from being eighth for most tackles in 2013 to dead last by a looooong way. It's all good and well now but when it comes to pressure games ie - finals we sure as hell better be ready to step up in that department.

Good find re: our tackle stats. I am wondering if our time in possession % has anything to do with our low tackle count? Another stat to back me up which I had to search for. Suckling is 2nd in the team for inside 50s (good).
1st is Brad Hill with 25, for 7 goal assists. Suckling has 23, for 0 goal assists. He has sent the ball into our forward line 23 times for no goal assists!
I did notice that Suckers had a few turnovers yesterday... Thought it was a bit unlike him with his elite kick...

Where do you get those types of stats MC? Been looking for recently and not sure where to start.

for tackles the difference between hawthorn and 17th is is 8 tackles per game. To put that into perspective, the difference between 17th and 6th is like just under 9 tackles per game.
Sicily's 3 goals from the Box Hill game...

Gun! Looks like he's added some size to that frame of his as well. Any chance of getting a run in the seniors at some point Craigy?

Seems unlikely, it's not as if we're struggling for goalkickers at the moment. He's averaging under 10 possessions and will need to lift that to mid/high teens before we seriously consider him. A 2015 debut seems more realistic.
To be honest, I thought Suckers was one of your worst against the Tigers. Some appalling disposal. In my opinion he should be dropped to set a marker but is there any chance he actually could be?

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Drafted him in AXVs not expecting anything this year but looks like he's got the skillset to become a very good footballer.
Excited for Hartung! :)
Will probably sit out most of the game in the green but exciting none-the-less! :)
Thought Hartung was a bit disappointing in the NAB so hopefully he's ready to step up.
Certainly suggests Hallahan won't be wearing the green vest which is good for those picking him.
Just an update on Sewell
Hawthorn FC @HawthornFC 10m

Well, not for Hawthorn given we have the bye in two weeks. :P
My gut says he won't play until Round 11.
Good news for Hallahan?? :)

He needs to make sure Hartung and Simpkin stay under him for the time being.
Really looking forwards to seeing how Hartung plays, looks like a real pocket rocket.
Big question is, with Hawthorn blooding all these youngsters - would Garlett have been in the mix for a debut had he persisted? :o

He could have been elite if he'd persisted but we'll never know. And neither will he.
Yeah very true Craigy.
Anyways really hope Billy can show something, looks like he could be an excitement machine :)
It annoys me so much that we got to see FA of Garlett, could have been great and I was so keen too..
Anyway..
Hawks are unbelievably good, best in the competition by huge margin IMO.
Only guys that are looking slightly close are Port and Geelong.
Yeah agreed Vin, looking supremely good. I didn't get to see the game yesterday, how did Hartung play? Got lots of the footy by the looks of it :P

In the first half he was going at around 55% disposal efficiency but ended up in the mid 70's which suggests he started to gain some more composure. Haven't seen the game yet either.
