Title: Round 2 - Tigers vs. Blues - March 27th
Post by: LaHug on March 25, 2014, 03:53:17 PM
Both teams coming off disappointing losses. Can the Tigers win to prove that last year's 5th place finish was no fluke? Or will the Blues show they have what it takes to make the 8?

Carlton in for a horrid year IMO.

Come on Tiggs! Really need to bounce back from last weekend's loss with a win here. Hopefully the team can rally around the boys that usually get tagged and help them break through their opponents as I think the class of Deledio & Ellis is really gonna be important in this match if we're gonna win!

Richmond have a much better side, and should win this by over 20 points at the very least.

So my tip is Carlton by 9 points

If Vickery could catch, they probably could have beaten GC
Carlton in their current configuration aren't a top 8 team

I'm not sure who will come in (if there is a late change), but Azza can play as a tall, but he isn't exactly tall (around 185cm's I think) so he wouldn't be the worst option.
I'm hoping McDonough is brought in  :P

BUt why would you take out a kpp because its wet only to replace them with another kpp

Tipping the Tiges to win but with no confidence

Even if McDonough comes in as a late change the fact that he was omitted in the first place is enough for me to trade him out - to a player with much better JS.

He's not really a KPP though, he's a shorter forward that can play a lead-up role. But his defensive/tackling skills are also quite good so he'd probably be a better inclusion than Griffo in the wet.

Yeh exactly he's a lead up fwd, who don't benefit from it being wet. If a team is replacing a key fwd because its wet, it'd be with a small fwd or extra midfielder because there will be more stoppages and the game will take more taxing on the midfielders than normal.

Yeah what I'm saying though is you get the best of both worlds with someone like Az IMO - he is still a really good marking player but is also much better at ground level & tackling than someone taller like Griffiths. He's kind of an inbetweener in that sense.

Can't think of where else to post it so I'll post this here...

I'm thinking of setting the polls to lock at the start of the game (so set this one to lock at 7:45, for example) so that we get a better idea of how many actually tipped each team before the bounce, rather than people answering the poll with 5 minutes left in the game... Thoughts?

Welp... after that you can't actually set a time to lock it (you can set a number of days but that's not that helpful) so I'll just have to do my best to remember to lock it when the game starts. I'll be at the game tonight though so that won't be happening!

Intriguing battle and actually really tough to tip but, the tigers seem to think they are a top four side despite a very young midfield now, I do however think the Tigs will win, Carlton have a lot to prove yet but are they up for it?

Yes I think the Blues will be up for it but the Tigs have to be desperate, Richmond by 11 points

I started Deledio the last 2 years, and really wanted so start him this year, so durable and good upside, but again his rd8 bye forced me to leave him out

Not all Juniors with talent transition that skill to AFL level footy.

I am thinking the umpire who didn't pay 50 after Vickery clotheslined Buckley when he was trying to take the kick in, otherwise Jeffy looks to be in the firing line for being a smart ass instead of actually kicking through the ball and nailing those two goals.

Umpires tried their very best to give the game to the Blues in that last quarter but Carlton wasted it in front of goal.
Ones that quickly come to mind are Ellis' holding the man when he marked it on the 50 and that interesting free against Griffiths that led to a Waite behind. There was also some very interested "shepherding" calls in marking contests that went Carlton's way yet, when the same happened to Morris, it was a Carlton free for an unrealistic attempt at a specky or whatever the umpire was making up. The list just goes on and on...

I couldn't believe how poor the journo's actually are. They all look like a bunch of nerds, and have no confidence in the way they talk, seeming shy and intimidated. A coach is just a person, ask them questions in confidence and challenge them/expect answers

Btw not sure if umpires tonight were wearing green or blue... flowering terrible.

You're kidding right?

Nope

Inconsistent bullshower, especially in the last quarter.

A big fat +1!

Glad I wasn't the only one that saw it, you pretty much summed up my thoughts exactly Huggy.

The Morris one was fair enough, he went for the specky and didn't get a hand on it. That's been a free kick for years.

So does that mean Dusty goes for a week as well for the soft hit.  MRP needs to to be consistent now.  You guys jumped all over me so just saying. BTW I agree umpiring favoured Carlton as well.

Yeah not sure Ringo, will be interesting to see what they decide here.

The panel on FoxFooty seemed to think it would meet the criteria for a two week suspension down to one with an early plea, while it sounds like Channel 7's panel thought he would be fine. Richo says "gee, from that vision it's hard to tell whether he made contact" so not sure what part that will play, considering the footage is pretty poor.

One thing is for certain, Simon White landed one on Dusty's chin as well so if Dusty goes, White has to go as well.

Channel 7 were looking at it from a footy fans "gee that's soft, nothing in it" point of view. Jon Ralph was looking at it from a "what is the MRP likely to think" point of view.

MRP have made it pretty clear that hits off the ball will be penalised. The key is whether the contact was sufficient enough to constitute a report. If the MRP think it was (likely) then it's a guaranteed 2 weeks down to 1, the same as Rocky.

I personally don't like (especially as I have both of them in SC), but I'm pretty sure Martin will get a week's rest.

The thing that will help Dusty is the footage is impossible to tell and Simon White wasnt a person about it and didnt take a dive. To me it looked like an open handed jumper punch but who knows what the lottery of the MRP will class it as

First time I've been on FF since before the game.
Sooo happy we got the result, I really thought we would lose it in the last quarter.
Carlton's kicking in front of goals in the last quarter was pretty poor, so we're lucky we got the result.
Griffiths mark in the last minute or so was massive, that was a game saver. Dusty's goal was awesome too!
Does anyone have footage of the Dusty report? I must've missed it.
About SC scores, I was expecting Simpson to score 90+ (without looking at the stats, as I was watching it live at the game), so to only score 61 is an absolute joke. Happy with Murphy and Dusty, but Cotch was a little disappointing.

I think the Morris one was definitely worthy of being called an unrealistic attempt BUT he was also shepherded from the possibility of a realistic attempt. I'm fine with them calling it but they gave Carlton at least two free kicks for the same thing that Yarran did. I don't mind the free kick call but the consistency was atrocious!

Additionally, I forgot about the one where they reversed a free kick just outside our 50 for what looked like (as far as I could tell from the crowd, at least) a Carlton player tripping over someone. Can anyone actually explain what happened there?!

On Simmo's score

Quote from: Ricochet on March 28, 2014, 01:15:23 PM
Breaking it down with the stats we have available.

12 effective kicks = 48
4 clangers = -16
2 effective handballs = 3
1 Goal = 8
6 Uncontested Marks = 12
2 Tackles = 8
1 Free Kick For = 4
1 Free Against = -4

Is 63. He only have 3 contested possessions so he probably only had 1 hardball get if that. Then scaled down. So kinda makes sense

No report, it was a good call not giving a free kick either since on the replay you can see Vickery looks up, sees Simmo standing still then leads with his head at him to try and win a free kick. Umps have been instructed not to pay those and I 100% agree.

Quote from: LaHug on March 28, 2014, 01:23:29 PM

Richmond player, I think it was Matt Thomas from memory threw an elbow into Daisy hitting him in the thigh pretty close to the nuts. I think that might be the one you are referring too

Having said that, if you want to talk about inconsistencies, twice a Richmond player (once in the first half, once late in the game) was caught holding the ball, no free called, twice a Carlton player had their head ripped off (they didn't duck) in the first half, no call, Vickery slams into Buckley when he is trying to take a quick kick in after the point, no 50, Cotchin gets the free for holding when he runs into a stationary Carlton player and slots the goal, had the free gone to Matt Thomas for a high free I wouldn't have had a problem with it since Brock got him in the face, but it didn't, Carlton were getting screwed early and often in that game by the umpiring, towards the end the subjective calls that went our way were just even ups.

Had Carlton actually kicked straight it wouldn't have mattered, that is what cost them the game. The most disappointing thing is they were asleep for 2 and a half quarters and showed absolutely zero intensity. I think we were lucky to have about 7 players show any heart that entire first and were playing smart ass football. To put it simply, they were pathetic. But the positive coming out of the game is they still almost won. Missing 5 or 6 of the best 22 and dishing up the effort they did, they still almost managed to win the game. Buckley needs to get as many games into him as possible, Yarran needs to stay at half back, it is where he is most dangerous, he is too restricted in the forward line and looks like tearing the game apart when he streaks from half back running towards the 50.
