The past two years I have done brownlow counts, and especially last year was quite successful with my predictions and made a tidy little profit on the side as well in overall and team leading vote getters. This year I though I would put the ongoing count on fanfooty, and at times ask for some opinions on games I miss. Ill try an update this at least once a week and keep the leaderboard on the first post.
I base my votes on watching the game to see who has the biggest effect, Ill also check that against the stats but try not to let the stats change the decision unless there is a huge difference between the stats and my perception, will look at media reports and highlights of games I dont see and ask people who did see them. I also look at polling hisotry, which comes in handy to seperate players who played games of a similar level, I.e Judd ahead Armfield, or Swan ahead of Blair if the players considered were equally effective on the day. Last year I managed to pick the top 3 (wrong order unfortunately), and top vote getter at 13-14 clubs.

Nice one dmac
Ever since I picked Bartel to win it in 2007 I have since picked the winner every year, except Cooney (LOL surely nobody picked that!) and Judd (Thought Swan was stiffed)
I put $200 on Bartel back then at $8.50, and since then I've loaded up on Ablett both years he won, Swan the year he won and Jobe too, so I will be keeping my eye on this thread throughout the year :) because the Brownlow is the only sports betting I do each year, so I tend to put some decent bets on
Just reading that, it sounds like I'm bragging lol, but I am not, just happy that I do well with Brownlow betting as it's the only sports betting I do all year, and makes the Brownlow exciting to watch :)

Cheers RD, will be seeking feedback on some games so will let you know. Agree Swan was robbed the year Judd won his second, Swan was unbackable to win by 5+ votes that year, I had no clue with Cooney either.
Interesting to see your thoughts on Judd and Swan
My mate is Pies supporter and we both agree that Judd and Swan won each others Brownlows
I'll be watching your scoring with interest.

yeah that was his really good game vs GC in 2012
i told my sister to bet on him getting votes was pretty safe
Votes for last night's game IMO
3 Ablett
2 Prestia
1 Swallow
A chance that Deledio or Cotchin could snatch the 1, but I would go with the 3 above
And dog, I agree they both won each others Brownlow's

I went with ablett, prestia, who I think were pretty clear picks, went with deledio for the 1, swallow very good but not great influence early, and it wasnt a big win so feel confident deledio/cotchin will get the 1, went with deledio, cotchin had a lot of the ball but butchered it at times so delefio gets my nod.
Also agree swan/judd won each others brownlows

As good as Fyfe was, I wouldn't be surprised if possibly Mundy got the 1 vote simply because Fyfe was subbed.
Agree with the GWS vs Swans game, although Treloar/Coniglio could go either way with who gets 2.
IMO Prestia may actually get the 3 votes here, thought he was outstanding. Swallow vs Lids for the 1 vote, if Swallow kicked straighter he definitely would've been a lock for at least a vote. Tough call there.
I agree with GL here and would give Prestia the 3 votes Ablett 2 and Swallow/delidio 1. based on the fact that Prestia had a 75% DE compared to Abletts 65.9%

I saw a thing on what umpires do on gameday once. They're not allowed to look at the stats sheet before they do the votes.

Exactly what I thought
Pretty sure they go straight into a room and put their votes in. Looking at stats would persuade their decision, and they get the votes on what the umpires saw
yeh definitely don't look at stats. Nice work though dmac, some good early predictions so far
Votes done for the split rnd done. Considered prestia v ablett for the 3 a real 50/50 call, being soi went with the payer with the vote getting history, prestia was equally good but perhaps not equally noticed. Happens regularly with young guys vs established vote getters. Takes a significant period of top form to get the young guy some nmore attention. The 1 vote in that game was a bit of a raffle. The 3 and 2 were easy in the pa vs carl game, the 1 vote being tough again. Polec and Gray were great late but poor early. Murphy, ellard, curnow and gibbs were solid throughout but none really seperated themselves. Cornes for being good all game gets the nod.

Must agree wiyh you and aaron, Jobe clear 3, goddard 2, chappy 1, heppel not far off the 1 but couldnt go past the 4 goals to chappy when so much of heppels posession was uncontested and a lot of guys had huge numbers due to the style of game.
knowing the umpires i think Heppell will get in over Chappy rightly or wrongly

Tough to pick the votes last night. Deledio owned the first qtr then went missing, as did Dusty with the first half before goaling in the end
Cotchin, Ellis, Dusty and Yarran would be my vote getters, but no idea what order for 3.2.1
Matty Thomas worked hard all game as well, think he could be a chance for a couple of votes!
I reckon Murphy, Thomas, Dusty could be the vote getters in that one. No clue what order though. Would've given Murphy the 3 if Carlton won...

Really good when moved to Deledio, but probably won't get votes due to the umps not normally giving votes to taggers.
Murphy was the BOG, he was brilliant and one of the only Carlton players that showed up for 4 quarters
I don't think Ellis will get in the votes due to having a run with role, so I will go with Matt Thomas for 2 since he was one of the only Tigers players to play 4 quarters and was huge with his tackling pressure.
Yarran has to get 1, he was brilliant all night and along with Murphy dragged Carlton back into the game.
It is rare that you will probably give a 3 and 1 to players in the losing team but Murphy and Yarran were just that good.
Dmac? Seem to be falling a bit behind here
I didn't watch Haw vs Ess so cant help there, but it sounds like the STK vs GWS game may be something like 3NRoo and then Hickey and Mumford get to other votes?
Didn't watch the showdown but Hartlett getting the medal should see 3 votes, and didn't watch Freo GC as I watched Syd vs Coll.
Pendles clearly the 3 and Beams prob gets 2, raffle off the 1
Not too much help here, but hopefully we can get a few others to chime in and get this Brownlow Count up to date :)
Showdown I reckon would be 3. Hartlett, 2. Ebert, 1. Schulz

Went to the footy so havent got to update, all done now.
Followed the medal at the showdown, ebert the 2, a raffle for the 1 but gave the nod to wingard. Pendles a clear bog, beams and lumumba the others, no sydney standouts though jpk was close. Sandi and barlow get the 3 and 2, same as last week, putting them both on 5 votes and at the top of the count.
Maxwell over lumumba for me for the one mate, Harry had 7 clangers and maxwell had 9 intercept marks and it was his 200th :)
Updated through rnd 2 with a few of the favorites already up the top of the leaderboard. Watson, Selwood, Johnson, Ablett, Pendlebury all on 3 to 5 votes early. Fyfe now ineligible through suspension throws the betting up in the air. Mitchell may miss a few rounds, and Swan has started very quietly so if they are to remain in the race they wont want to drop too far behind the leaders. Freo boys Sandi and Barlow up the top also, and expecting 15-18 wins for freo this year so a lot of votes on offer for their players if one can stand out from the others. Sandi and early smokey? Probably not... but you never know.
Barlow now out for 6
Tough one tonight Dmac...
3. Smith
2. Breust
1. Suckling (maybe Cyril)
If you're going by stats then stay away from mitchell, he dominated the second half when it was over
Mitchell will get votes over Breust imo umps love him
I woulda thought:
3. Smith
2. Mitchell
1. Breust
3. Smith
2. Lewis
1. Hill
Went somewhere in between all you guys, think Smith was a clear best. Next two were difficult, thought Hill had a lot of influence, mitchell for the 1 as umps do love him and he would have been noticed, even though he was quiet early.
3 votes L.Breust. ;)
Agree that Smith gets the 3
the 2 and 1 is a lottery between a bunch of them. Mitchell, Hill, Suckers, Rioli, Bruest or even Shiels who was probably the best in the first half when they set up the win.
Yeah Mitchell will get a vote or 2 simply because the umps love him, just like Swan. Smith should get the 3, think Breust will pick up a vote as well

One hand on the medal?
G.Ablett 15 votes ($2.75)
With three certain BOGs, and another two likely, where he will get a minimum of two votes, I have Ablett a clear leader already with 15 votes from 7 rounds. Gold Coast are flying at 5-2, and even though I would expect a slight drop off, they won't get many of those hammerings by a 100 points that will preclude Ablett from picking up plenty more votes even if their form does turn. Would seem only injury and derail his current run.
Main Chanllengers
S.Johnson 11 votes ($8)
S.Pendlebury 10 votes ($9)
J.Selwood 9 votes ($11)
It would appear at this stage, that the above players present the main channelnge to Ablett taking home a third medal. The two cats and a pie midfielder are both close enough, having polled 9-11 votes each already. They all also are proven votegetters and match winners, some of the best players in the competition with the ability to dominate games string together three vote games. All of them also play for current and likely top 4-6 sides, meaning plenty more wins and vote getting oppurtunites.
The Outside Chances
M.Murphy 9 votes ($26)
D.Swan 7 votes ($16)
B.Ebert 7 votes ($67)
T.Boak 6 votes ($34)
P.Dangerfield 6 votes ($13)
D.Beams 6 votes ($18)
JP.Keneddy 6 votes ($21)
J.Watson 5 votes ($21)
A handful of outside chances, some proven vote winners, such as previos winners Watson and Swan, others up and comers, like Dangerfield and Boak. Swan and Watson are always dangerous, both can dominate games, and recently Swan has started to return to form with two best on ground performances after a slow start to the year. Murphy sits not far of the pace with nine votes following two BOG displays in Carlton's recent wins. Dangerfield has the capabilities of being a future medalist, can still be a bit up and down, as is the whole Adelaide team, but his best delivers clear three vote games. Beams and Kennedy both go somewhat underapreciated at times in star midfields, but both gather huge numbers and can kick a goal, likely to have to share a lot of votes which hurts their chances. The Port Adelaide pair, Boak and Ebert are perhaps the biggest unknowns of this group. With the power sitting 6-1 near the top of the ladder there are plenty of votes to go around, these votes are likely to be shared between these two guys, along with the likes of Gray, Wines, Westhoff, Polec in an even team display, there is however the potential for someone to string together a large number of votes in a team looking like winning so many games, so keep an eye on these two, especially Ebert at $67 who I currently have sitting on 7 votes already.
Keep an eye on
N.Jones 8 votes ($51)
N.Dal Santo 7 votes ($41)
C.Ward 7 votes ($51)
D.Prestia 7 votes ($151)
S.Burgoyne 6 votes ($67)
T.Cothcin 4 votes ($16)
A few to keep a watch one as the season progress. N.Jones is dominating for Melbourne right now, and sits near the top of the leaderboard with 8 votes. You could assume Melbourne won't win too many games this year, but if they put in a lot of close performances his vote tally could keep rising. Dal Santo is a previous top 3 finisher in the brownlow and is re-invigorated at a new club winning plenty of games, likely leading vote getter at the Knagaroos right now. Ward is in a similar boat to Jones, wouldn't expect anyone from a team likely to win so few games at the top of the leaderboard, but keep an eye on. Prestia, living in the shadows of Ablett, but over the odds compared to others on this list at a huge 150-1! Breaking out into a bonafide star himself, would be a clear second in the votes at GC right now, and there a lot more votes to go around now they are winning games. Burgoyne seems to be enjoying some almost career best footy right now, having two great BOG performances in the past month. With plenty of votes on offer at Hawthorn, and Mitchell now likely to miss 8 weeks, could start stock piling some serious votes. Cotchin seems incredibly under the odds ($16) considering Richmond's and his start to the year, but if they can turn it around he is god enough to get plenty of votes.
Draw a line through them
Mitchell 7 votes - likely to miss 8 weeks or more with a bad hamstring injury.
Fyfe - 6 votes - could poll several more votes, but, rightly or wrongly, is ineligable.
Fantastic dmac!
Really hoping Ablett gets another one
Round 8 votes up. More votes to high vote getters such as JPK, Fyfe, Watson, Gray of Port Adealiade also continuing to poll.
Paddy Ryder very stiff not to be in your votes for Brisbane v Essendon.

Was a toss up between McVveigh and Kennedy for the 1 vote I thought, really could've had it either way.
Ryder I thought was reasonable, but probably only matched West for most of the night. Got huge supercoach points for his last goal which was the sealer, but still thought he was short of Watson, Rocky and Goddard, and probably Heppel too.
Yeah from all reports I read JPK and Hanners were 3 and 2

That's how I have the 3 and 2 for that game.
All updated through round 11 Saturday games. Been a bit slow on this with moving house. Found the Syd vs Geel and ess vs Rich games hard to give votes on. Otherwise pretty straight forward.
For last night's game, I'd say;
3. Redden
2. Macrae
1. I think it should be Bewick, but the umps will probably give it to Hanley
Cloke would have to get at least 1 vote from last week. 5 goals and 23 touches..
Hard to pick the votes from today. Dunn and Jones played well but they didn't win the game. Young and Pendles played well for Collingwood but were they really 3 vote performances?
Yeah Pies winning will probably mean Dees get robbed with the voting
I thought 3 to Jones, 2 to Young, 1 to Dunn, but Swan and/or Pendles may take a vote or 2. Probably Swan cause the umps get a woody every time he gets the ball
My 3 votes for todays game would go.
3. Dunn
2. Swan
1. Young
Was thinking Jones, young and pendles, really didn't rate swans game despite alright stats. Think Dunn was great and one of the best players, but whether a bloke playing at chb will poll.. it's very rare. Very tough game as Jones and young faded late, pendles had good and bad quarters, swan butchered it a bit,

Here's a quick snapshot of my leaders at r11 for the market of r11 leader that comes up each year. Ablett should have it,but have a go at Pendles or JPK if your keen, only 2 I see with any chance of causing an upset for this market.
In my own projections I have Ablett on 20 votes, JPK on 15, SJ (ineligible) on 13, then a 5 way tie in third with Selwood, Boak, Harvey, Nate Jones and Pendles on 12 votes.
I think Ablett has it in the bag but I will be having a something on JPK just in case.
Ablett or JPK, two horse race.

Yes there are now 23 rounds compared to 22 back in 2007... BUT each team has a bye now, so still only play 22 games. Therefore there are no more rounds to poll votes in this season compared to 2007. ::)

See him getting a huge amount of votes early. The last few years pendles and swan have both got 18+ votes, this year I have swan getting 7 only. Beams will steal a few too but no one else will poll many.
