This is an open letter to m0nty,
I don't want this to be seen as an attack, rather a frank and honest opinion if where this website is at in terms of it's competition.
Your blog has been missing for years while other websites overtaken you. Admittedly you have announced 2014 as the return of the fanfooty blog but it's too little too late.
Throughout the footy season, you upload a weekly blog with good insight, however what you may not realize is that people are after very specific information at very specific times. The fanfooty forum is what keeps this website alive (minus the live scoring aspect (something that you have nailed due to afl.com.au having had a notoriously laggy website for the past decade). Nobody has time to listen to podcasts anymore, it's much more benefical to post articles and summaries as it's far quicker than listening/skipping through a podcast without tags to find the information that you want.
You have no presence on the forum which is the beating heart if this website.
This may hurt, but nobody gives a "shower" about Mr. Football. Give up on it, it's a list cause.
The fact that scpaige posted the 2014 prices and positions while you still had players listed as $-14,000 in the fanplanner is pathetic. You're known for the fanplanner, live scores and the forum.
This is my frank assessment of fanfooty in as it stands.
-the forum has been diluted in terms of quality personnel and content (admittedly this is difficult to control and influence as numbers grow, however you have no presence on the forum which has turned it into a breeding ground for idiots, not to mention the cheer/boo feature)
-up your offseason/preseason content, you can't keep relying on the forum for this info, people need to be spoon fed
-forget Mr.football and focus on what your customers actually want. Sc and dt are way better than any other fantasy game will ever be due to the size and prizes on offer.
-it'd been 5 days since goldprices were released...if you haven't realized the reach that your website has then hopefully this is a reminder that you should treat it as a priority. You have such a great opportunity with this established website and a rapid growth of fantasy sports but you're wasting what you have. You've been in quicksand for the past half century.
I realize this may have come off as arrogant and rude however my intentions are only aimed at benefitting this website. I canceled my fanfooty account years ago to join yscc because j was sick of the lack if attention and involvement from fanfooty. The forum has kept this site alive recently which is blatantly obvious.

Posted on phone so excuse spelling/grammatical errors
There's a board called feedback and it's there for a reason ::)
If you don't like it then leave. Really, m0nty lives a life just like the rest of us, and he's been getting around to things on here recently. :)
misspies?
You should have just kept your account deleted whoever you are, seem like a total wank.
I think youre overacting a bit mate!
Im sure hes got a life like the rest of us, and can't be on the site 24/7.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the site.
The forum is really the main point anyway.
Though it would be nice to have the updated fan planner prices... ::)
You have raised a few issues that we are all aware of, Like all of us m0nty does his best with the time he has available. While we would all like these features fixed it is a matter of time.
If you had taken the time to read all the feedback sections you would have seen some of the things m0nty has committed to this year and also some of the issues. Think from memory m0nty decided to get married as well.
As one who knows it is not simply a matter of cutting and posting data from another source and sorting it out automatically. Quite often you have to rebuild your macros. lookups etc and this takes time.
As I said we are all aware of the limitations of FF but we work with what we have to make the forum what it is. The forum is basically what it is a place to discuss issues and we should not lose sight of this as the main feature with the extra benefits added in.
Cheer/Boo system has been removed recently after complaints.
Forum is certainly carrying most of the site now in where to find information, although has grown rapidly recent years. Slowly getting improvements here to help out!

I think you meant to say m0nty uploads a weekly podcast rather than a blog. I don't exactly know what this "very specific information" is you think we all need to be fed by m0nty. The forum keeps FanFooty alive because Fanfooty is a flowering forum first and foremost! Most of what you need to know will be found on the forum and for everything else go to freaking Footywire or DT Talk or SC Paige. m0nty can't be all things to all people and with all respect to the great man, there are plenty of knowledgeable members here who outperform him year in year out and provide excellent insights.

Utter bullshower. The forum has never had as many people dedicated to providing content and good advice as it does now. A breeding ground for idiots? You seem to want m0nty to go into Nazi Mod mode and troll every thread for people who have vaguely controversial views. Or is it that you just want him to run a traditional website with articles and a comment section which subjugates the users to essentially being spectators?

I don't see the correlation between a forum owner posting in threads and the success of the forum. Why in the world would that be important? To keep us little devils in check? To school us with his incredible insights? Turn it up. m0nty undoubtedly has better things to do both at FF and outside of it; the rest of us are quite capable of running an effective community ourselves.

Who is Miss Pies/ what the flower lol? ???
Its quite typical of a pie supporter to have a winge. Us blueboys play hard, win (up until 95), and have fun off the field and like to work with everyone on the forum in a harmonious way. (except for the pommies on the Ashes forum). In this week of the godfather of negotiation - Mandiba's funeral we should all hold out our hand to this poor pies fan who knows not what he is saying and obviously has little IQ. Embrace us pies fan embrace us.

Not against those that have done so, they found out from her, what she tells directly to others is her decision. However it doesn't give an excuse to go post it in a public forum. That is the problem I have, especially if the connections made are found out to be false.

Alright, only saw this thread tonight, did the SC prices first before settling down to reply.
First off, it does look like it's MP from the style etc, but please don't gossip about her like this is a school yard. I'll take that stuff down if she asks, it's completely unnecessary.
Overall, I always welcome posts like this, because whoever wrote it is passionate about the community and about this site. I don't take it personally, and indeed agree on a lot of points.
Specifically, I took a decision a couple of years ago that blog content was a waste of my time, since it was taking up more than half of my week but only earning 2% of my revenue. I have changed my mind on that one because I am going to push the blog into a new direction: a more granular approach with lots of shorter posts, using SB Nation as inspiration. This goes against my training as a feature journo, but I think there's a demand for that sort of thing and it could become popular if I put the hard yards in - with the help of some of you forumites, if possible.
I have no presence on the forum for a very good reason. I have been a regular poster on other sites for more than a decade, and continue to be active in a variety of roles, and I have found that the best forums tend to be those with the lightest touch possible from the blog administrator. If I had been imposing my will on the forum all the way through, it most likely wouldn't have grown into the thriving community it has become. Forums are not about journalism or content publishing, they're about community. You guys are the beating heart of the forums, not me, and that's the way it should be.
As to whether you or I are the "beating heart of the Web site", I guess it depends on how you view the site. Some view it as a forum with the other stuff as extras. Many (arguably most) view it as a liveblog during games on weekends, and never visit the forums. Others might click through from Google to a player profile or a statistical history table and not venture further. One should not be too hasty to view their own experience of the site as the only one that matters.
Forums wax and wane over the years, this is a natural thing as people grow up and out. I look at the BigFooty fantasy forums now and see it as pretty much a ghost town. That's not to chip at Adrian, who runs a fine site, but these things happen - the rise and fall of No Passengers put an end to it, from what I can tell. You guys are mostly free here to build your own community, and if you want to take advantage of that opportunity, then great. If not, then good luck elsewhere. I am happy that those of you who stick around can enjoy yourselves here.
As for Mr Football, I still maintain hope, but I realise that I am not able to do it by myself. I need an artist to make it look great, and probably a mobile programmer to turn it into an app (not my specialty). I'm thinking of putting it up as a Kickstarter for funding.
Well said mate.
Thanks for updating the FanPlanner too :)
mOnty just wondering have you ever thought of going more public with the XV Comps we have?

I 2nd this, there should be mods in every board and another one or two should be added. :)
Yep, I hear you on the mods, will fix that in the new year.
As for XVs, what exactly would you mean by taking it public?
Fair points m0nty. I agree that having an administrator who oversees rather than is active is important, but there have been times this year where the forum has needed attention and it has been hard to get your attention to action. Things have improved with 3 quite active mods in ossie, HP and Holzman, but I believe there are still areas they can't access to moderate.
You make a good point that I have often thought about in regards to using some of the forum users to aid the new blog format. There are some forum topics like MrCraig's rookie reviews or LaHug's Captains that are as good as anything written on any other site I've come across. There are probably 20 odd personalities on here who are among the best amateur footy brains on any equivalent site.
Just want to echo KBs sentiment regarding the XVs. I feel this is one of the most appealing elements to the forum, and could be far bigger with the right support.
Thanks for creation of such a high quality forum.

Ultimate footy over at the Age is pretty similar to XV though isn't it.
@Spinking well said, I completely agree.
dunno have heard of Ultimate footy but no nothing about it
Yeah there are other sites that have done exactly what XVs is that existed before XVs.
XVs as I understand it (might not be correct) is a game Ossie partly thought up due to inspiration from a game/site that was very similar. But yes, XVs isn't the only "XVs" around. There are other groups of blokes doing the same thing.
And yes I think you can pretty much do it on UF as it stands.
I don't see how we can make the XV comps any bigger. We already have 4 comps on this website (not including TX) more publicity will mean more comps will be opened which would just be overkill. Pretty much the only reason this website is still running in the off season is because of the XV comps if we give each XV comp their own website like TX does this place will be dead.
Like maybe the winners of each comp can have something on their profile claiming they have won maybe their name changes colour or whatever just as a recognition of what they achieved. Something like that for the Elxam champions would go alright too.

I think I'm the only Mod that is able to reach the most boards on the forum, only the Mr. Footy and Feedback sections I can't touch, not very active areas I can't reach. Depending on the time of year, at times some of the Mods can't be reached but most of the time we're around somewhere haha. People just need to remember to report if they see something they think needs to be seen to as the days of me reading every single thread are gone as the forum has grown...
We'll see if we can get those installed in the new year Noz, the name for the Winners and stuff ;). Ossie has been an advocate for it for ages as have many others, especially CF haha.
My view is that the XV Comps could attract more people to the FF Forum.
If it was marketed as a new and different idea, which it is, it is different to Ultimate Footy and others in several ways, then it could really attract more people.
Now I have an idea here that I just thought of, probably not very good, but anyway.
Maybe you could use the coach ranking system (Bootstudder, Witches Hat Wrangler, etc.) or a system like it for the XV competitions. So once you have made so many posts you get a certain title and then you are eligible to do different things around the XV community.
Maybe you start off as a supporter, then you can move into assistant coaching roles, then eventually a head coach role. It would make people know that they start as part of the competition at the bottom and can work their way up to run their own team. It would definitely get rid of everyone's urge to start a new competition at the end of every season if the new coaches were involved in a different way.
I don't know, none of that will probably work in real life, but it sounds like a good idea in my head.
Either way I think it would be good to give people titles for their XV competitions accomplishments and I feel that if the competitions were marketed more on the front page of the site and more throughout blogs and forums, it could really generate some more people. I remember when I first came across the competitions to start with, I thought they were a great new concept and I wanted to find out more straight away.
The only problem with that BB is most people that are already coaches on here have put in a shower load of time into their teams whether it be the immediate success of build for the future and to just leave that club so another person can take over is pretty poor.
If we want to make the XV more successful the first step would be for everyone who has more than 1 team to step aside and give it to someone else but in saying that most people who want teams already have them.

No one wants to coach a XV club anyways so you can coach 10 teams for all i care. Im just saying if KB wants to make it bigger this should happen.
