Title: Return of the spambots
Post by: stew42 on November 14, 2013, 03:20:23 PM
In the Other AFL Games thread, where moderators fear to tread, a mighty enemy has returned. Spambots are blitzkreiging their way through that thread like a child tearing a napkin. It's chaos, CHAOS!!!

So, yeah, let's get fixin'  >:(

I cleaned up the few that were started in the DT/SC board, shame I can't touch the Other Comps board though to help clear it :(.

Lest we forget the spamwars of summer 2012/2013. A time when heroes were made and we conquered the threat of cheap watches.

Is it time for us to gather our keyboards and rise again in battle?

Monty time for action - This idiot has posted 3 times in the Other AFL comps where we have no mods. Either clean up the thread or give some mods rights in this thread.

That was too much from the spammers >:(. Was really annoying as think I was only active mod at that stage with the powers and had exams on same time they came about :P. At least we're better prepared this time, and I'm sure even more of you guys will be hitting that report button if you see more of them! I just really hope it's not the second coming...

Just remember HP m0nty is the only one who can deal with the Other AFL Comps as when I reported it got message no mods found.

Really needs to be a mod in here, we said it last year and here we are again saying the same thing.  :(

Yeah I feel like the site is falling apart in a way, it's just a mess. So many little bugs and things. :(

Some forum sites dont let you start threads until you have posted in a couple of threads.

This could stifle some of these spammers if m0nty introduced this

Yeah that might work or even you have to be registered to post and start threads. Would weed out the spammers and other flogs I think.

A lot of people come to this forum initially to ask specific questions, I think it would have more of a negative impact on the site than a positive.

The two minute wait is as annoying as the spammers.

Thanks naste, Grazz and others for reporting...

Can only delete some (not a mod in all places)

Maybe someone should tweet m0nty, only way to get his attention mostly.

Basically we need Mods on boards that are not moderated atm.  I report when I first see but there are a couple of boards not moderated.

We also now have a couple of inactive mods who should be replaceed to enable quicker action as I think on one Board HP is the only active mod.  We really 2 - 3 active mods on all boards.

I have deleted hundreds of spam accounts. Hard to block them entirely because they come from so many different IPs. I'll keep watching.

Whats the issue with having some mods in these sections where there are none m0nty. ???

Obviously they do m0nty!

If the spam bots are posting in these sections, and users can't report it, they are left with the option of contact you via PM or twitter.

Tbh, hardly anyone legit joins this time of year. I'd be inclined to shut down the whole registration process for a week just to see if they move on.

Thanks for sorting this, m0nty. I'd like to piggyback this thread, knowing that you've definitely already seen it, and put my hand up again to take on some mod duties with hawk_88 no longer an active member. I put up my hand around the same time last year, I believe, because HP was having a tough time dealing with all the spammers himself. I know that ossie and Holz are very active right now so it may not be necessary, but I'll still offer my services!
Please let me know what you think either way.
Cheers

they are coming faster than i can delete.

did about 5 before i went to bed, woke up and 12 reports. Hopefully if i keep it up they will disapear. the only annoying thing is i cant mod the afl and other comp threads. HP will need to do those.

Except I haven't received any reports from the AFL/Team boards nor much from the Other Sports board. Usually check all the major boards for spam when I'm on (DT, SC, P&T, Front Bar, Other Sports, Other Comps) but will add AFL board to that. I went through them last night and cleared some reports but was like 5 reports not to mention another say 5 threads that popped up before 2am. Pretty sure the spambots like striking in early morning like after 4-5am I assume. I only got up 15 minutes ago, so explains why I don't handle the early spams :(.

I disagree mate, I think all the boards should have a mod tbh. The spambots are only one reason they are needed.
