Title: Stand Alone VFL Team.
Post by: Kellogscrunchynut on November 11, 2013, 04:31:21 PM
Read on the article about Nathan Batsanis on the AFL website that Richmond will have a stand alone VFL side next year. What do you guys make of this do you think it will be good to be rid of Coburg?

Not too many affiliations left these days,  :'( I don't like it,

Yeah true I worry about how it affects the original VFL teams.

Bendigo has really struggled since Essendon ditched us a few years ago

I reckon it'll work out well for us, think Coburg might turn into Bendigo Gold 2.0 though. The team wasn't that great in recent years, losing the Richmond lads who used to play in it will hurt.

RICHMONDS investment in a standalone VFL team will give its young players the best possible chance of playing senior football in 2014, according to VFL coach Tim Clarke.

The only problem with standalone teams is players getting called up to be emergencies in the 1s. Especially if they arent playing in Melbourne. It thins the team out and it could also see players only play 1/4 or 1/2 a game.

This has happened to the Swans and Lions for a while, especially with injuries and around finals

There is no reason our VFL team can't challenge for the premiership.

I don't think they will have the team chemistry to be a contender straight away but that is a good looking seconds team. Would probably flog Melbourne :P

I think he will be as Ivvy struggled at some points last year by himself and we want to keep Vickery up forwards as much as possible rather than in the ruck.

I dunno I just figure it will take a bit to get the team gelling. New coaches, game plan, team mates etc

Most of these guys played for coburg last year so it's not the same gameplay they are used to? The coaches will also be different that they had last year. Not from Richmond but from Coburg.

Coach first, player second, not good enough to push anyone out of that team.

In addition half of these players are way too good for this level. Hell Matt Thomas is probably our 3rd/4th best midfielder and he won the Magarey Medal in the SANFL, which is probably better than AFL.

Who in that team is too good for VFL?? none of them even dominate in the VFL. I understand some of the kids will become regular AFL players but at this current time that's just an ordinary VFL level side. Matt Thomas right now is that teams BEST midfielder not 3rd or 4th. I'm talking about this team as an immediate prospect playing round one in a few months time, not a couple of years down the track. They are way off

Have to agree with Tee Jay here. Gotta look at the bottom end of the team and the gap between the guns in the team and the youngsters. The top end VFL teams have a very very small gap between their best and worst. Other teams will exploit the inexperienced

Exactly right. There's no doubt that it's a great list of young players but it's still a team of kids. That's exactly why they have gone out and recruited guys like mcqualter and davey same as GWS did in the AFL

I reckon we'll keep tabs on him while he plays for us, and if he shows enough, we'll get him into the AFL side.

Day jobs, studying etc?  ???

I mean where do they play on the weekend? How can they ever be selected if they can't play lol
Oh right haha. Dunno, I guess they'd just have impress at training?

No clue about this stuff.

They gotta be playing footy still though.

7 Richmond VFL games will be aligned withRichmond AFL Games meaning a game on at punt road, followed by a Richmond game on at the G. How good is that!
Plus the dreamtime at the G game will have a curtain raiser at punt road oval between Richmond and Essendons VFL sides.

Would imagine players would get pulled up from amateur league or tac cup if they need players outside of their squad

a 120 point loss against another team in their first season. They aint "challenging for the premiership" they will be lucky to win a handful of games.

Yeah he kicked four man.

I can't wait for Miles to play. Killing it weekly in the 2s

Rookie Richmond midfielder Anthony Miles dominated the Tigers VFL win over Geelong at Punt Road, amassing 37 possessions, including 23 contested and 12 clearances.

I would say Griff would be back, but we have the bye this week and then Ivan should be back.

Ty had a pretty decent game as well once the team got going, so I'm not sure where we can drop him.

Az Edwards didn't do anything over memorable, so he could be dropped... but that might make us too tall.
