A lot of stuff to work on obviously but we're there and that's the main thing.

Just like last year its the Hawks to lose, really can't see them letting this opportunity slip through their hands.

You didn't face this freo team though ;)
Amazing somehow you got here again as all you expected, the over confidence will rule and
Freo will spank ya bum!
Fremantle have to get there first Tbag........ ::)
Unfortunately, Brendan Whitecross will miss it, apparently has been confirmed that he's done his ACL again.
If Whitecross doesn't come up it will be interesting to see if Savage or Jed gets the nod.
Savage and Jed better subs imo but unlucky for whitecross. Looked very slow when he came on.
Go away tbag, i lost all respect for crows supporters this year when my fb was filled with them not recognizing Ports success and your just jumping in with it aswell. Get over it your crows are shower Hawks won and are in the GF!
What do you guys think of my Norm Smith bet I did this week Gibson @101.00 put $5 on it lol obviously unlikely but meh

How the frog did the crows enter this convo? More popular than I thought, not really ;) But the fact we are still mentioned ;)

Its not cockyness we are just supporting our team!
Well done Hawks!
Going to be awesome, a Hawks and Freo final 8)
Yeah well, as good as you are, or you thing you are, We don't care
The rest of us just want you to lose
Thank God for the dockers 8)
did I miss something?
because everyone's talking like freo's already won...
Haha yeah you are right! Everyone just reckons Sydney won't beat them at Subi, as do I.
Hawks and Freo! 8)
swans do have a very undermanned team... that being said, I don't think I'd count them out yet- last year in finals they were the under dogs every game :P
Yeah that's true. Tippett not playing is huge but Swans are capable without him.
But I still think Freo will just be too good. :P

Not that huge, having some unpredictability to our fwd line will help... we did well enough beginning of the season
Yeah I know mate. Thats why I said they are capable without him :)
I still think Sydney are a chance - Freos first prelim final at home so the emotion may get to them and could choke. (Ross Lyon will try and keep that part under control) Sydneys forward line will be undersized so maybe we will see their small forwards dominate as we seen with Johnson and Gunston last night. Think the outcome will basically depend on who Crowley tags as I think ypu can not keep all of Jack, O'Keeffe, JPK, McVeigh quiet.
Anyway whoever wins this one I will be barracking for in the GF,

^ yeah, that's the thing- yeah, mitchell and tippett are out... but last year they won the GF without tippett and mitchell anyway :P
from last year GF team they've lost (for this game): Shaw, Mattner, Johnson, Reid, Goodes, LRT, Morton
and replaced them with: Cunningham, Rohan, Mcglynn, Biggs, Rampe, Everitt, White
Rohan, Mcglynn and Rampe are actually pretty solid ins. Reid did flower all in the GF last year, and White should be able to replace him
cunningham and biggs do seem to be scraping the barrel a bit though :P

Yeah exactly the same Nige. About time they had some success!
It is just that come GF time I support non Victorian teams and always have as despite the success of interstate teams there seems a lack of recognition of these interstate teams in Victoria and the AFL does it best to reward them. Still remember the Finals scheduling in 2004 which imo hindered Brisbane winning 4 in a row.
I'd be happy with either of the teams, reckon we will be hungrier than the swans as they won last year and are maybe a little content, they haven't been in great form anyway.
Freo could really self destruct I reckon, many of their players will have never experienced grand final intensity and could be interesting to see how they react. Go hawks!

Sorry Ringo that is pretty of. The mark I would say. Sydney, Crows, WC, Bris and Port all have won 9 flags out of 16 between them since 1997. You are suggesting the AFL made it hard for you because you were non-victorian despite the fact you were beaten by another non-victorian side? And what about last year when Hawks despite finishing top and winning our QF still had to play a Saturday night prelim and Sydney got the Friday night one despite finishing 3rd? The AFL let Geelong play a game at skilled earlier this finals series but didn't let Sydney play last year's prelim at the SCG so they could play Saturday.

No Scrads just saying that the AFL often makes it difficult for interstate sides.
In 2004 despite winning the right to hold the Prelim Final at the Gabba we were forced to play at the G on the Saturday night thus giving us less time to prepare for the final. Not saying we would have won as Port played and excellent game but the scheduling was wrong. If they were to stand on their commitments they could have allowed Brisbane to play on the Friday night to be fair. It was common knowledge after Brisbanes 3 peat that a 4 peat was going to be extremely difficult.
What a win!!! wooooo yeeeehhhhhhhh

This is for those of you neuters who are backing Freo.
How could anyone want Crowley or Ballantyne to win?
Ross Lyon's negative scragging flooding defensive game plan is a pox on the game. Do you really want 17 other copycat teams adopting this absolutely awful strategy? Teams will win by kicking 3 goals. The Coleman will be shared by several players, all of whom end the season on 32 goals.
Please support the family club who play beautiful inspired football.
And also let's hope that Buddy's contract signing arm doesn't get hurt.
Go Hawks!

Just because the Dockers don't play a pretty brand of football does not mean that they don't play a good brand of football. Their defensive pressure in the second quarter last night was like nothing I have ever seen, and that was good football to watch. And Fremantle's top goal scorer for the year? Michael Walters with 41, which is a lot more than some of the top players at other clubs.
And it's not like every club will adopt the way that Fremantle play now, Ross Lyon has just developed a unique game style that works very well for this club. And as for Ballantyne and Crowley, well when you play against them you hate them, but they do their job so well and they are the kind of player that you want on your team.
As for me, I've been saying the Dockers will win the flag for 2 months, and I reckon if they play like they did in that second quarter, they are a fair chance at getting it. GO DOCKERS!

On the Freo Bandwagon this week! #dockers2013
Now that MrC has brought up the topic of drinking, here are a few rules for the day:
First of all, every Grand Final party needs a copy of the paper with each team's players. As per usual, divide all the players up between the viewers. Every time your player gets a stat, what ever that may be, have a drink. If your player kicks a goal, finish your drink. If you happen to be the lucky bugger that wins the Norm Smith Medal, everyone else must finish their drinks. Simple.
But, this game alone is not enough to satisfy the large number of beer-loving, football-fanatic fans that this great country is oh-so-good at producing, so here are the special rules that apply to everyone playing.
1. Every time Bruce McAvaney struggles to contain his excitement, have a drink.
2. If Bruce McAvaney calls Cyril 'delicious', scull that motherflowering drink, and eat it.
3. If Hayden Ballantyne gets in a fight, have a drink.
4. If he gets knocked the flower out, scull it.
5. Draw an imaginary line up the middle of the room. One side is Team Buddy, and the other Team Roughy. If Buddy kicks a goal, Team Roughy sculls, and if Roughy kicks a goal, Team Buddy sculls. Don't stuff it up.
6. Every time someone mentions it being Fremantle's first Grand Final, have drink.
7. If your selected player is subbed off, you now receive the title of BEER dog. Meaning, if anyone is empty, you grab them another.. and another... and another. AND you may as well scull the rest of yours for your trouble.
8. If your selected player misses a shot on goal and hits the post, drink until you can see the bottom of your can

Who do we see as the defensive matchups for the game?
Freo's forward line will mostly be:
Pavlich (Gibson)
Clarke/Sandi (Lake)
Mayne (Stratton)
Walters (Guerra)
De boer (tagging Hodge or Birchall)
Ballantyne (can't see Hodge or Birchall being the right match-up here. Ballantyne is good at getting in behind the defence so you don't want a zoning defender on him. Burgoyne would be a good matchup for him but he is more important through the middle and up forward.
Thoughts?

Lake will take whoever goes deepest, which may at times be Pav. Gibbo will take the other. Maybe hodge could go on Mayne for a while, leaving stratton on ballantyne, he has the ability to play small. Deboer will go to Birchall, remembering birchall absolutely destroyed freo in our only game against them this season, gathering 37 touches and a goal.
It's ours to lose - like last year! Gulp! :-\
Shiels to Crowley? :P
Isolated thunderstorms, hail and scattered showers are forecasted for Saturday, all to clear by early afternoon.
So it'll be wet underfoot, and the ball will be in dispute a lot.. Falls into Fremantle's style of footy I'd say? Hard, slug it out, contested type game, whereas Hawks like the clear weather for good disposal efficiency and quick ball movement.
Still hawks to lose, but Fremantle will play with a lot of confidence, as they are going in as underdogs. Will be a cracker of a game!
Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Sewell, Puopolo, Roughead, Guerra, Gibson, Breust and Savage. All have pretty hard heads.
Rioli, Smith, Hill, Burgoyne, Buddy, Birchall move pretty well.
Bookies know best. ;)

Hmm I don't know if it is very wet it may also take a bit of the effect of freo's pressure off, as it will be more scrappy and contested generally. Don't know how to really say what I'm thinking lol so that may not appear to make any sense at all. Although wet weather certainly isn't our ideal conditions, I think we do pretty well in it.
Definitely looking forward to it, go hawks!

Surprised the AFL didn't just declare Sydney the winners of the prelim because of a concern over ticket sales
I remember the prelim at Waverley when Stynes ran across the mark and gave away a 15m penalty after which Buckenara duly slotted home the winner.
The wind changed and we kicked INTO it for 3 of the 4 quarters.
The windy Gods owe us one and so expect the wind direction to flip around at 3 quarter time giving us 3 with and 1 against it.

Not bad for Simpkin... Delisted by the Cats to playing in the Hawks Grand Final (and possibly Premiership) team.
Savage/Anderson the 'hard-luck stories'?
Yeah I think it's clear the replacement was always going to be the sub. Simpkin has done very well in that role this year and has just performed in a big granny in the VFL so deserves his spot. Savage stiff, was in great form in the middle of the year and was BOG one week, had a couple quiet ones after though and he pays the price.
Would have loved to have seen Anderson in, he will be an absolute star but I can kind of understand him being left out for the more experienced bloke.

Winds north to northwesterly 30 to 40 km/h tending west to southwesterly 40 to 60 km/h in the morning then easing to about 30 km/h late in the afternoon.
I live like 20k away from the G and it's spitting a bit here, not too bad and there are blue skies.
The worst of the weather was meant to happen in the morning, leaving it to clear up a bit in the afternoon.
Bloody pumped, going to be a great game. Very nervous too, don't reckon I was this nervous last year. Go hawks!
Interesting that nobody has really mentioned that Freo's delivery into forward will be affected by wind, rain etc.
Seems Hawthorn is the only skilled team out there?
Keep 'em down! >:(
Let's make this the premiership quarter.
Congratulations! 8)
Well done Hawks! :D What a performance. YEAAAH HODGEY!
Good Job Hawks. Played much better than Freo.
As was said at the end of 2011 Grand Final,
"2 outta 3 not bad"
Brian flowering Lake.

You'd be kidding yourself if you thought that Ablett's goal wasn't the best of the year

I think my favourite was actually Westhoff's. Shame it wasn't eligible.

Yeah same here, was such a great effort. Stupid how goals/marks in the finals aren't included, that's when some of the best stuff can happen! And they are made even more impressive due to the stage they are on and high pressure etc.

A 'few' is an enormous understatement for me ;D
One thing I learnt from the game - with aim like Ballantyne's and Fyfe's - never stand next to them at a urinal.
How many times is balla gonna get reported for striking next year after the opposition remind him of his choking?
I hope he gets sledged so bad he starts crying.. :-X
See I am happy to sledge Balla, but respect Fyfe more so he's probably going to get an easier time.
I am starting to respect Crowley.....no remorse for Balla, haha. But I hear he is a good bloke in real life. :P

Yeah apparently its the same with Crowley. I actually respect crowley as a player and would love to have him on my team, hate balantyne though and probably would even if he played for the hawks lol.
Balla the pest was officially exterminated yesterday.
I think what pleased me most about the win yesterday was the evenness of a solid team performance. Last year Sydney beat us because their lower tier players played a lot better than our lower tier players.
Lake and Gunston were stars, Lewis a rung lower and then after that it was just everyone else putting in a solid performance for their role in the team. Cyril laid some important tackles, Hale some strong marks at crucial times, Roughy a couple of goals when we needed them, Smith with the long bomb in the last quarter, Hill provided some important touches, etc.
It's always been said we've had a team of stars, but yesterday we were a star team :D
oh man, rioli trying to tackle sandilands at one point was like the funniest thing ever.

Brian Lake's quite an odd cat. Was on the phone to his wife, but was made to pose with the Cup and put his phone in the Cup while the photo was taken (as can be seen in the vid). :P
I'm gonna post this here since Lake and Cyril are two of three names here and this in the Grand Final thread.
AFL @AFL 2m
MRP has reviewed #AFLGF. After double-loading, Brian Lake can accept 3 games, Cyril Rioli 1, while Nick Suban will go directly to Tribunal.
Lake :(
He won the Norm Smith, give him a break! Although he probably doesn't even care.
Rioli should have gotten more.
I'm surprised Cyril didn't get more...

I think there was too much made of it. He didn't do it with a great deal of force, it didn't result in the player hitting his head on the ground and there was no injury to speak of.
As for Lake... :(

As for Lake... :(
I guess at first glance it looked a lot worse than it was, looking back at it, it's really not that bad... still, I guess a week is right.
Lake's is probably deserved. Normally that would be 2 weeks down to 1, so now it is 4 down to 3.
It will be interesting to see what Suban gets. Very similar to Judd with Rischitelli a few years ago.
This isn't the first time for Rioli is it?
Note that Rioli got double points for that, so he'd normally be off free.
Pretty poor ruling IMO
The MRP is becomng a joke, not that it already wasn't but seriously..
Gives Lake a few extra weeks to get over his celebrations!
Finally bought my premiership t-shirt today in preparation for my date with the cup. Would have liked to get one from the Hawks store but $11 for postage?? I paid $13 to get 3 shirts sent from the U.S a while back. ???
