Title: WXV Round 12 - Thunder/Islanders battle for Spoon
Post by: ossie85 on April 13, 2013, 02:53:16 PM
Partial Lockout!

Thursday game locked Thursday night. Rest of teams locked Friday night

Round 12
(AFL Round 14)

Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers       v       Cape Town Cobras       Stade du Ray
New York Revolution       v       Dublin Destroyers       MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, USA
Mexico City Suns       v       Tokyo Samurai       Guadalajara
Pacific Islanders       v       Beijing Thunder Linklater Oval
Sao Paulo Pumas       v       Cairo Sands       Estádio do Pumas
Buenos Aires Armadillos       v       New Delhi Tigers       Estadio de River
Wellington Warriors       v       Seoul Magpies       The Basin Reserve
Toronto Wolves       v       London Royals       Rogers Centre, Toronto
Moscow Spetsnaz       v       Berlin Brewers       Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow

The Run Home

1. Sao Paulo Pumas, 10 wins, 1 loss, 118.75 percentage

Back on top after a the Suns went down to the Spetsnaz. Sao Paulo have only a 1 point loss to Cape Town as a blip on the radar, and would love to go back to back Minor Premiers. Should win matches against Cairo and Dublin, will win against Pacific and New Delhi and Toronto could be a challenge. But it all comes down the final round - Suns v Pumas - which is shaping up as the decider for the Minor Premiership.

Prediction: 15-2, 1st

2. Mexico City Suns, 10, 1, 115.25

Were looking untouchable before the Spetsnaz took them down last week. But the thing about the Suns is you have to play well to beat them, they don't have bad days. Will win against Tokyo and Beijing and should win against Berlin and New York. BUT the real challenge will come from the 2nd placed Pumas in round 17 and the 3rd placed Armadillos in round 14.

Prediction: 15-2, 2nd

3, Buenos Aires Armadillos, 9, 2, 117.68

The Armadillos had a squad of 15 to chose its 15 from, and still scored over 160. This is a team that has no depth, but is full of talent - meaning they are vulnerable to injuries. Will win against New Delhi, Wellington and Tokyo, should win against Seoul and New York, and challenge will be against Mexico City.

4   Moscow Spetsnaz   9   2   106.71

Just keep finding ways to win! Have played the Pumas, the Suns, the Armadillos and the Wolves and came away with a 3-1 record. They finish the year off against Berlin, Pacific, Dublin, Cape Town, New Delhi and Tokyo - no reason they can't win them all.

5   Cape Town Cobras   8   3   102.98

Things were going swimmingly for the Cobras are 4 wins of 4 points or less this year, and a string of 8 wins in a row. But they have lost badly the last two weeks to strong contenders (Toronto, Buenos Aires) and now are looking very shaky. The run home sees them against 4 of the bottom 5 though, a struggling London and a rampaging Moscow. They should win 4-5 from here.

6   Toronto Wolves   7   4   107.40

The Wolves are looking very strong, but a lot of things would have to go there way to make the top 4. Even if they win there remaining 6, I don't see them overtaking Moscow or Buenos Aires, who have soft-ish draws. No reason they couldn't win against any of London, PNL, Berlin, Dublin (a tour de Europe!) or Cairo - and the Pumas look the biggest hurdle in the way of a home elimination final.

7   Berlin Brewers   6   5   105.90

The 1 point victory against New York was hugely important for Berlin - who face off against Moscow, Mexico City and Toronto in the run home. They could still make the finals even if they lose to every one of them, but they must win against Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing. An upset over one of the big 6 would see them play finals probably.

8   Cairo Sands   6   5   104.51

Finally crack the top 8, and they still have Dayne Beams to return eventually! The Sands are much improved, and standing in there way of finals appearances are tough encounters against Sao Paulo and Toronto. But, like Berlin, they can lose both and as long as they win against the other 3 or 4, they are still a chance.

9   London Royals   6   5   101.15

The London bridge has burned down, and they find themselves out of the 8. They won 5 of there first 6, but have lost 4 of there last 5. They still have a very capable midfield, but injuries are hurting. They have tough chances against Toronto and Cape Town, 50-50 chances against New York and Cairo, and wins against Beijing and Wellington probably. I think they will just miss out.

10   Seoul Magpies   5   6   103.29

Things haven't gone to plan for the preseason premiers, and have lost games they shouldn't have. Need to win at least 4, and probably 5, of the final 6 to qualify for the finals. Can't see them getting over Buenos Aires, but the other 5 are winnable.

11   New York Revolution   5   6   98.59

1 point loss to Berlin was huge, and the ugly truth is that New York have won only 1 match over the last 7 rounds - some of those frightfully unlucky. Coupled with the fact they play off against Buenos Aires and Mexico City to finish the year, it may just be too much for New York to qualify this year.

12   Dublin Destroyers   5   6   98.53

Improvement should be enough of an achievement for Dublin - and with 3 tough matches against Moscow, Sao Paulo and Toronto - I don't think we can expect finals.

13   Tokyo Samurai   4   7   100.83

A percentage over 100 and a 4-7 record says a lot, as the Samurai have gone down twice to bottom 4 teams this year. Would need a miracle from here with games against Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Cairo, Berlin and New York to come.

14   Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers   3   8   96.02

Reindeers are slow to get up each season it seems! With stars returning from injury, they should avoid the bottom 4, but too far behind otherwise. Could cause some upsets!

15   New Delhi Tigers   3   8   84.60

Have managed to get 3 wins this year, and I think that's an achievement. I doubt they'll get another, but they wiill avoide the spoon.

16   Wellington Warriors   2   9   80.01

Should avoide the spoon.

17   Pacific Islanders   1   10   79.64

Round 12 clash is crucial against Beijing to avoid the spoon!

18   Beijing Thunder   0   11   80.21

Round 12 clash is crucial against Pacific to avoid the spoon!

My guess:

Position   Name   Wins   Loses
1   Buenos Aires Armadillos   15   2
2   Sao Paulo Pumas   15   2
3   Mexico City Suns   15   2
4   Moscow Spetsnaz   15   2
5   Cape Town Cobras   13   4
6   Toronto Wolves   12   5
7   Cairo Sands   10   7
8   Berlin Brewers   9   8
9   London Royals   8   9
10   New York Revolution   8   9
11   Seoul Magpies   7   10
12   Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers   7   10
13   Dublin Destroyers   7   10
14   Tokyo Samurai   4   13
15   New Delhi Tigers   3   14
16   Wellington Warriors   2   15
17   Pacific Islanders   2   15
18   Beijing Thunder   1   16

Other Highlights:
London also had a 1 point thriller against Toronto last time, and now they have a match to honour Canadian Independence Day on July 1.

Laste year saw a rare win to Dublin came against New York by 1 solitary point, also Moscow a 2 point win over Berlin.

We have depth, just we have injuries :(

D - Scotland, C. Cornes, SD Thompson, Burgoyne, Brennan and Gilbert - 6 premo defenders (surely that's depth?)
M - Swan, Boyd, Carrazzo, Cross, Barlow, Kane Cornes (6 premo-ish midfielders + a few premo fwd/mids)
R - Cox/Warnock (two guns)
F - Cox, Stevie J, P. Chapman, D. Petrie, B. Harvey and J. Schulz - all premos

Your right up saying we don't have any depth is a lie imo :o

Like 6 premos in each position. Isn't that depth? :( Also have lots of back up spuds like P. Stewart in fwds, T. Logan in def, J. McKenzie in mids and J. Redden in ruck

Fair call nails, but you did have zero reserves last week :p

So even when we have to call up the worst/only players left on our list we still score like a top notch team :)

Injuries suck. Why is Cross playing in the reserves ::) that one really grinds my gears.

To avoid controversy, teams can be accepted for the round for membership points purposes ON the hour after the last game of the round finishes (i.e. if the last game finishes at 5:45pm, teams can be accepted from 6:00pm --> Will use fanfooty clock).

Round 12
(AFL Round 14)
Wouldn't this before after Round 13 AFL (After the State of Origin matches in Worlds)? Not sure why teams are being named 1.5 weeks early :o.

Hoping to catch Cape Town while they're in their current form, in line for some upsets 8).

Are they after membership points maybe? idk

Can't hurt to do 'em early better than having to use last week's teams I guess.

Yeah Moscow getting up over us by 1 point and then beating the Suns this week puts top 4 almost out of reach, but would still be pretty happy to secure a home elimination final.

2 of my gun mids were out last week but I the rest of my sqaud looked real good. Lead by my 2 100+ rucks.

Backs:  A.Rance, S.Atley, T.Murphy, J.Watts
Mids: J.Selwood (C), D. Mundy, J.Redden, J. O'meara
Rucks: T.Goldstein (VC)
Fwds: A.Black, R.Gray, L.Hansen, M.Hurley

Interchange: T.Boak, Z.Clarke

Hunter just misses out despite a good score last week. Played up front and stared with an 86. Should get DPP next year wish I had him this year.

So yeah, our game against Mexico City was close and we could have beaten them, unfortunately lady luck has deserted us this time around and I'm pretty sure we're gonna be without Mummy, B.Goodes, Petrenko and Thomas. And if Puopolo doesn't get up from whatever made him withdraw last minute against the Eagles, we're gonna have a 2-man forward line.  :(

Man the Armadillos could have been good with split rounds and stuff...

But look at our midfielders just coming into form:

Swan - 142.7 3 rd average
Barlow - 135.7 3 rd average
Boyd - 130.0 3 rd average

and Kane Cornes solid all year.

Hopefully Barlow gets up this week...  With Carrazzo, Brennan, Gilbert and Chapman all not too far away I sense a huge score coming.

Shannon Hurn gone for up too 8 weeks  :'(

Big blow with representative footy taking away my AAP Alliance defender.
First time for the year my back 4 has a change, with Goddard, Enright, Hurn and Adcock arguably being the best back line in the world 15's. Luckily for Mexico, we have Brian Lake who has been waiting in the wings for some time!

In fact I'll do it now :)

Dylan Roberton loses his place in the side after some poor performances, after a great start to the season he needs to find some form back in the reserves. Scott McMahon also out after a recent injury in training. Back in to the side comes Beau Waters finally back from injury, which is great news. Also in to the side comes Ryan Harwood who has impressed for the Jaguars recently and deserves his first senior game of the season :)

Hmm, not confident this week at all. A lot of things would have to go right, and surely Moscow is due for a loss?

Anyway, might expose a Hibberd captaincy loophole, so we'll see how we go

Cairo Sands Round 12 Team

DEF: P.Hanley, N.Malceski, C.Newman, J.Gibson
MID: R.Douglas, D.Armitage, S.Grigg, B.Sewell
RUC: O.Stephenson
FWD: D.Hale, L.Breust, L.Thomas, T.Dickson
INT: C.Pearce, N.Dal Santo

EMG: D.Stanley, M.Jones, M.Hutchings

Captain: R.Douglas
Vice Captain: N.Malceski

We're very lucky this week that God is on our side and has allowed us to field a team with no players OOP.

Tory Dickson returns to the side after injury while Orren Stephenson comes in to replace an injured Shane Mumford once more. Jason Johannisen would have debuted this week if Dickson or Stephenson were not named. Mark Hutchings is also back, but only in the emergencies.

Wellinton Warriors Round 12 Team

DEF: Mitch Golby, Sean Dempster (VC), Ryan Lester, Rory Thompson
MID: Nathan Foley (C), Isaac Smith, Lachie Whitfield, Tendai Mzungu
RUC: Jack Hannath
FWD: Campbell Brown, Jake Neade, Shannon Byrnes, Dennis Armfield
INT: Dale Morris, Joel Patfull

EMG: Nathan Wright, Jimmy Toumpas, Timmy Sumner

With the injury too Marc Murphy during the State of origin break we now are without our 3 best players in Murphy, Hayes and Tex Walker which really hurts the team. Nathan Foley has been selected as captain as there arent all that many candidates for the captain position now and Dempster has been given the vice captain role.

Love his story.

Forgotten at the Wolves to begin with
Traded to the Royals
Retired much to the annoyance of London
Picked up again
Played in the reserves some more
Makes his London debut!

Hi Jay! No idea if it was legal or not (I can't work out the fanfooty clock lol), but only Dons/Eagles players are locked.

New Delhi didn't name a team, so based on preferences the team they get is:

D: B Jacobs, G Ibbotson, K Cheney, Z Dawson
M: D Cassisi, S Black, L Montagna, R Bastinac
R: A Mullett (OOP)
F: J Blair, T Milera, D Giansiracusa, J Podsiadly
I: S Edwards, J Melksham
E: S Dunnell, B Rutten, M White
C: B Jacobs
VC: D Cassisi

But only Melksham is locked in, can still change by next bounce,

(They get a strike also)

270/3.

Feel like Dempsey deserved more, and Heppell deserved less (for once).
Would have been happier with 90 for both than 105 and 75...Dunno why..feels fairer..Oh well.
Decent start. Gaff did quite well, Heppell was good again. Dempsey disappointing, but had to be rushed back due to injuries down back so his score is acceptable.

Btw oss why such harsh predictions on the Magpies? :(

Predicting us to go 2-4 against Wellington, PNL, Cairo, Armadillos,  Berlin, New Delhi

Going by total points scored so far, we would be looking at 5-1.

In a last minute inclusion, Coach Purple 77 has named (although waiting approval) freshly promoted rookie Mitch Clisby for his debut, in place of KPP Andy Otten.

Clisby impressed last week with an ironic score of 77, with his potential to score this weekend against a poorer team looking larger than what Otten could produce as a KPP.

BTW oz, if by some reason Clisby isn't approved, go off my previously named team  :)

I get like 0.25 of Dalziell don't I? 22.5 might be helpful

Players Missing:

Defenders:
CCornes - Out4Season
Brennan - Injured
Gilbert - Injured
Johncock - useless
Dea - emergency

Mids:
Carrazzo - injured I think
Cross - Bulldogs are tanking... seriously he's one of their best players WTF
Barlow - unlucky bullshower injury
J. McKenzie - missing since Craig came in
J. Gysberts - emergency
L. Jong - bulldogs coach is racist
Dalziell - forgot to name him as had 2 minutes to name team

Rucks:
Warnock - been gun when played, but stupidly missing
Redden - season ending injury

Forwards:
Steve Johnson - bullshower
Paul Chapman - injured
K. Bradley - where r u?
P. Stewart - emergency

And then a whole bunch of spuds.

Like 8 or 9 of them would be best 15 too...

Matthew Stokes
Michael Hibberd
and now Lachie Henderson

Leaning towards Stokes, as this is his best fantasy year in his career, but I'm probably more attached to Hibbo and Hendo

Purple did you not watch much of Hibberd last year? Showed heaps of potential just needed to get a decent run of injury free games

Still been getting a few niggles during games this year but not as bad

I did start with him in SC is my fav Essendon player now

Did you forget I also have Taylor Adams and Devon Smith? Also you have Lindsay Thomas... It's 1,133/12 vs 821/9.

Basically as it stands it looks like this...

Houli, Adams, Smith, HGA (currently 20) + 312 vs Newman, Armitage, Grigg, Stephenson, Dal Santo and Thomas.

Certainly will be close, and I'm not very confident...

Had to use a team from 3 weeks ago I think as that was the last time we needed to post teams, never realised Taylor came in last week as he never appeared on the changes this week. Can't believe I left him out  >:(

Still learning the players we have over at the Thunder.

Magpies are coming just to prove their former coach wrong!!

I like being wrong in this case :) Well done Seoul!

@Toga, I've read the email - thanks for doing it quickly - I'm pretty appeased. Do you mind saying something similar in this thread?

Yeah, Taylor came in at quarter points.

Okay, so basically the situation: I have named the team every week so far since Q and I took over; this week due to time restraints I asked Q to name the team... And as you all know, Harry Taylor was somehow indadvertedly overlooked for selection this week.

The last time we named a team was in WXV R11 (AFL R11+12), where Harry Taylor did not play at all because a) he was rested in Round 12, and, b) he had the bye during AFL R12. As you all know, we were not required to name a WXV team during AFL R13, due to state of origin, which meant that last named team for Beijing did not contain Harry Taylor.

Now when Q named the team for this week, he used the WXV R11 team I named as a template, and made adjustments to the team accordingly while checking the AFL R14 changes... Since Harry returned during R13, he was not listed on the changes for this week, which lead to Master Q making an honest mistake in overlooking him for selection this week.

As for replacements, Josh Hunt wasn't named because he's been sub every week, and we weren't even aware Michael Talia was even on our list (so we need to find an up-to-date team list at some point), as the list we inherited from bomberboy/JROO weren't up-to-date obviously.

And finally, as for that article about Harry Taylor earlier in the week, that was a way we thought we might be able to express that HT is on the trade table come EOS, as we have received some PM's stating interest in acquiring him from some of you guys... The article was simply a way to let everyone know he is on the table!

Hope everyone understands all this, and are satisfied that nothing malicious was involved with the mistake - all it was was an honest mistake on our part, which won't be happening again I am sure. :)

How did that happen... Man, this game is depressing me.
You came up against the Reindeers in hot form 8). And we are missing Pav and Rioli :o.

Had a feeling the reserves would go pretty well this week! Nicholson pisses me off really, STRING SOME CONSISTENT GAMES TOGETHER SON haha

Good that Goose is back, unfortunate as he was in my XV, then out of it Friday afternoon when he didn't make the Lions cut, then he comes in late and scores well :P

Gee, a Carlton supporter names the team for Beijing and all of a sudden there are tanking accusations. Hint Q, you already won the Kreuzer Cup. ;)

Figured it was just a misunderstanding. :)

Both would be pretty poor choices for #1 I would think. Boyd you could argue I suppose, but Billings has better scoring potential.

Wouldn't judge Aishs scoring potential on his u18 performances as he was still  recovering from injury. Look at his SANFL gf stats for scoring potential ;)

Absolutely shocking performance this week by the Pumas! Terrible scores everywhere! You can be guaranteed there will be changes for the upcoming match against the Wolves which we really need to win!

South Australians overrate Aish. Victorians overrate Boyd. But after doing my research lately, there are several players that could be picked first on 'scoring potential'.

Cheers CF, needed a big scalp! After our close loss to Mexico City that should have been a win, I was really hoping we'd get up. I'm really happy that we're managing to perform when we have some key outs.

Sao Paulo score 131, Mexico 139 and Buenos Aires 114, what has this world come to!

Top three showing a lot of vulnerability, liking my chances at a home qualifying final.
Unless Buenos Aires can get their stars back they could lose a few in the run home.
Sao Paulo still have to play in Mexico and, as they showed this week, can score poorly.
And even Mexico showed vulnerability after just a 5 point win over Tokyo this week.

Could be a very exciting run home!

If my whole team can score good together, the sky's the limit. Had Fyfe and Ward 68, Dusty and NicNat 73 and Heater 70, all poor scores from guns who are all in the top 10 in my best and fairest, yet still scored over 150. Was helped out by Frawley and Seedsy killing it though :P

Ditto! Should be a good clash.

Ablett squaring off against Pendles, will my decision to take Pendles 1st in the draft come back to bite me? Nah :P

Armadillos manage to find a way to win, always. On a cruise atm and it costs 75 cents/minute for internet.

Hopefully nrich names a team this week.
