Title: WXV Round 13 - New York/London mini-Elimination Final
Post by: ossie85 on April 13, 2013, 02:52:07 PM
Making some threads for the future :)  By the time they come round, you may have to go looking for them!

To avoid controversy, teams can be accepted for the round for membership points purposes ON the hour after the last game of the round finishes (i.e. if the last game finishes at 5:45pm, teams can be accepted from 6:00pm --> Will use fanfooty clock).

Round 13
(AFL Round 15)

Cape Town Cobras       v       Beijing Thunder Newlands Cricket Ground
Cairo Sands       v       Tokyo Samurai       Borg El Arab Stadium, Alexandria, Egypt
New Delhi Tigers       v       Dublin Destroyers       Tata Stadium, New Delhi
Seoul Magpies       v       Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers       Seoul World Cup Stadium
London Royals       v       New York Revolution       Stamford Bridge
Berlin Brewers       v       Mexico City Suns       Olympic Stadium, Berlin
Moscow Spetsnaz       v       Pacific Islanders       Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow
Toronto Wolves       v       Sao Paulo Pumas       Rogers Centre, Toronto
Wellington Warriors       v       Buenos Aires Armadillos       The Basin Reserve

Highlights:
The Cobras are on a 3 match losing streak, but should easily account for Beijing (and have clashes against New Delhi and Pacific to come also). Beijing fell in a heap in a game many tipped to be a break through win, Cape Town looks too much for them, and look to have only one more shot at victory against Wellington in round 16 - the spoon awaits.

A danger game for Cairo with Tokyo capable generally scoring around the 130 mark each week - a loss here combined with tricky matches to come against Seoul, Toronto and London could see them get a bit nervous about finals chances. Tokyo, at 4-8, and with only matches against sides above them on the ladder, will not make the finals can only hope to cause upsets. A positive is that amazingly the Samurai are one of the final 6 remaining in the World Idol comp!

New Delhi will unveil a new coach against Dublin, and with the form of Garrick Ibbotson and Leigh Montagna solid, they are looking a better team than at the start of the year. Dublin were extremely disappointing against New York last week, and that loss will make it extremely difficult for them to make the finals. Dublin should beat New Delhi.

Seoul only won 3 of its first 9 matches, but have won the last 3 in a row to have snuck back into the 8! This represents a huge match for the Magpies, a win and finals look very possible, a loss and they are fighting tooth and nail to stay in. The stakes are equally as huge for the fast finishing Reindeers, who after only winning 1 of its first 9, is also on a 3 match winning streak! Amazingly, if they win there remaining 5 matches, they can still make the finals with Toronto its main stumbling block.

American Independence Day clash between London and New York is the main event! Particularly given the significance of the teams on the ladder, it will be extremely difficult for either New York (with clashes against the Suns and Armadillos to come) or London (with clashes against Cape Town and Cairo) to make the finals with a loss here.

The Brewers will nead to defeat either the Suns this week or Toronto in round 15 to be serious contenders for the finals, and not choke against the teams below them on the ladder. Of Berlin's 6 wins this year, only Cairo currently sits in the 8, the Brewers need a scalp. Conversely, the Suns hopes of staying top of the ladder rests on winning against sides like this - but they looked shaky last week.

The Islanders will be bouyant after there second win of the year that has likely helped them avoid the wooden spoon, but Moscow's form is too intimiating with the Spetsnaz gunning for an amazing top 2 finish.

The Wolves and Pumas is one of the matches of the round! Sao Paulo had a shock loss last week and looked far from premiership contenders, while the Wolves have won 6 of the last 7, and while the top 4 looks beyond them (but not impossible), a home elimination final is very achievable.

Last week I would have said the Warriors were no chance against the Armadillos. I still think Buenos Aires will win, but last week's effort was very weak as the injured ravaged team gave there lowest score ever. Top 4 under threat for the Armadillos.

Very important game for both New York and London, the loser will have a hard time making finals. Heck, will be difficult enough for us with the Dillos and Suns to come. :-\

Goodes, Hurn, Crameri all confirmed out. Maric and Sandi likely to miss.

I would have to be VERY lucky lol.

Well, I am actually due for a 150+ game.

Conversely, I am also due for a 110 game.

It will be either one I reckon  :P

So, I think I read something that Dayne Beams will play one or two weeks in the VFL, if so, he'll either be back against Seoul or Pacific. Perfect.  8)

Really weird to say Buenos Aires are out of the race having just got to the 2nd on the ladder for the first time! I'm not so sure, sure they are struggling now, but if they get players back for finals they'll be fine. They are just so very lucky to be playing New Delhi and Wellington which should keep them a top 4 spot.

Unlucky to an extent - they did purposely recruit old players, and old players are more injury prone.

Toronto Wolves Rd13
Def: N.Grima, M.Johnson, M.Maguire, D.Nicholson
Mid: S.Pendlebury (C), A.Swallow (VC), J.Ziebell, B.McLean
Ruc: P.Ryder
Fwd: J.Riewoldt, D.Zorko, M.Robinson, A.Hall
Int: B.Cunnington, C.Jones

Emg:  A.Edwards, C.Young, A.McGrath

IN: D.Nicholson, M.Maguire, B.Cunnington
OUT: S.Butler, M.Jamison, J.MacMillan

Cunners back, Young finally in for his first Pies game, haven't slotted him into the XV yet as I'm a little tentative about a vest/his role at the new club, will more than likely replace Jones next week.

Butler out after his big one last week hurts but hopefully Nicholson can slot straight back in and have another good week.

Edwards was about to come in and replace Aaron Hall but Tigers playing against North this week I reckon I might leave Edwards out :P

Should be motivated against his own team but hoping and praying that he has a quiet one. JRoo couldn't quite be dropped haha

Hall vs the Lions should do OK anyway. Will toss and turn over that dilemma.

Early prediction, I reckon the reserves score will be a big one this week!

Haha the Jaguars tanking are they? ;)

Nah was thinking of adding "The reserves may well outscore the seniors this round" but I thought that's pretty unlikely, XV isn't too shabby. Replace Hall with Jolly (via Ryder fwd) and Nicholson maybe with Butler and Jones with Young and you have my best XV IMO. Not my pre-season best XV, as Pedo and Nicholson have on the most part disappointed while Butler lifted.

Injuries to Jacko Thurlow & Liam Shiels has us very short on players, not to mention Yeo, Guerra, Mitchell all not being in their respective teams (but they are emergencies so fingers crossed).

Don't even have 15 named players this week! :o :-X

There is a feeling in the air of Germany, a feeling of opportunity, a sense of occasion, a sense of an upset as they turn on their TVs to watch the game LIVE from Mexico City. The Brewers have finally gained a consistency coach Purple 77 has been pleading for, but at a cost; no 150+ scores. Coach Purple 77 has dared the players to go all out and have a crack this weekend, as he too feels an anticipation in this upcoming match.

"I just gotta feeling, that this match will not see this 134-141 point range from my boys, I have dared them to have a crack, which means it will either pull off magnificently, or fail horribly. I have given them permission to take it to them, as a 135 point score in a 20 point loss is the same as a 115 point score and a 40 point loss this weekend. We want to win."

Meanwhile, the Brewers have swung the axe this week in a daring move to win the game, and have been significantly bolstered by the return of outstanding young defender Jack Grimes!

I went over teams last night when I posted, must have missed Pav being named (as all the news is jsut about Cyril being back). Came on now because doing my DT/SC and went over teams again and saw him named :o.

That last spot for forwards is a tough call, with Lynch and TDL in similar form! Think with Rioli/Pav back in, we have a solid forward line again especially since a few have stood up this season :D.

Haha no worries. I didn't come on to the forum until after lockout anyway so wouldn't have made a difference if you mentioned it or not. And to be honest I probably would have named Minson as captain and brought on Adams anyway. Just means I have no backup if for some reason Minson pulls out.

Hmm looking tough for the Armadillos this week. Only 14 players named, and one of them Brennan brought in at the last moment so not named for the Dillos. I'm guessing he comes in for 1/4 points? Went through their squad and 3 players (Cross, Gysberts, Dea) named as emergency, so better hope some of them get brought in... :-\

FFS! Houli pulled out now, and I think probably the first this season I haven't had a defender in my emergency list. This round has turned to shower! >:(

Ossie how do we decide who plays in defense to get half points? Is it Taylor Adams or Sam Jacobs?

Forward line absolutely atrocious, Scotty Thompson destroyed JRoo. Zorko only respectable score in there. Cunners was lifting in the last quarter on track for a decent enough 85+ before he got subbed off. I think I've got it right with Sauce coming in to fill Houli's spot and Adams covering Ablett? Pumas would still be in the box seat, Roughy, Gunston, Duncan tonight could turn the game, along with Masten, Waters, Sloane, Sauce and Porpoise in the other game.

Ossie was saying it will be done to maximise my points, so I'm guessing Jacobs will score more than Adams, so hopefully Adams will get the half points.

Gee I have a lot of players in tonight's 2 games! Duncan, Masten and Waters all started solidly, but Porps and Gunston absolutely no impact so far! Wouldn't say I'm in the box seat at all rb, need all my players to average 100 each to get past you!

Certainly gonna be a good one! Fair to say I wasn't expecting that from Duncan tonight, actually a little relieved his score wasn't higher. Gunston, Sloane and Masten good games also.

Hartlett in my SC side so a little torn there, would still like for him to have a good game.

Nicholson could be the decider I reckon, he can be very up and down. If Nicholson and Ryder are both on I should be home and hosed but could just as easily lose by 100+.

Fair to say this could be a completely different story if Ablett was playing!

This is truly my round from hell. Absolutely nothing has gone right. Too many atrocious scores, can't believe that happened.

Yet, amazingly I am still a chance, although things MUST go right. I will win by one point if the story unfolds something like this:

Berlin
Jack Trengove   90
Michael Hibberd   120
Michael Hibberd   120
Colin Garland   85
Jack Grimes           110
Jack Steven           110
Home Advantage   43

Mexico City
Aaron Sandilands   100
Bradley Ebert   100
Brendon Goddard   100

It COULD happen, but gee, what a pathetic performance on my part so far.

744/8. Only notable performers have been Harbrow and Priddis. Lynch has to hope TDL doesn't perform if he wants to keep his spot in the side. Sorta saw Rioli being the sub first game back but oh well :-\.

Wow, if only we had even one of Shiel or Clay, 115 and 110 to our reserves squad :(. Think Shiel's time as a tagger has come to an end so may force his way back into the PNL lineup at the expense of Ray.

shower score, will be swinging the selection axe in the week. Darling and Ward to be dropped for Adams and Thomas.

Frawley, Hombsch, Fyfe, Monfries and Walters' scores to come. Fyfe and Walters should score good against the Saints, while Hombschy and Gus should continue their form.

Frawley has been a beast since he returned from injury and forced us to play him because of our lack of decent back depth, 114 last week and is currently on 58 at half time.

Hartlett + Zaharakis vs Ryder and 126 points (HGA already included...)

Pumas Progress

Houli Adams (half) 22, Hartlett, Waters 82, Roberton
Ablett Duncan 121, Sloane 112, Zaharakis, Masten 107
Minson (C) 228
Walker 108, Roughead 92, Gunston 104, Porplyzia 67
Hill, Duncan Jacobs 64

Total - 1,107/11

Going to be close tomorrow, but RB got the edge at the moment...

Hartlett, Roberton, Zaharakis and Hill vs Nicholson, Ryder, Johnson, HGA (currently 36) + 66

Yep gonna be close. Going by averages of the remaining players should see me winning 1,453 to 1,450, but we all know you can never trust averages. I think the decider for me will be which Roberton turns up to play against his old club... He averaged 90.3 from his first 9 matches this season, but has only averaged 53.25 from his last 4...  :-\
What'd I tell you....Nicholson.... ::)

Lucky pendles went big this week, the vast majority of the team has been a big letdown.

Big week for the club too, an upset win over the Pumas would have been sensational, but looks highly highly unlikely from here.
Hill killing my hopes... :(
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think, I THINK it's Ryder + 130 vs Zaharakis + Hartlett

Zaha 63 at half time, Ryder 45, Hartlett 44

Gonna be bloody close, hopefully not another repeat of the Moscow game

EDIT: Never mind, CF got in just before me. On my phone so can't check your addition so I'll have to take your word for it. Makes it even closer!

I am, so unbelievably (insert angry verb)!

Of all the weeks Mexico drop off, Berlin throw a ripe old shocker!

So disappointed. If we won, we could have really taken a hold on the spot in the eight. Still, not all hope lost at all, just need to beat Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing and hope for the best. Not going to be easy.

Before scaling...

Cape Town: 1250

Beijing: 1299

Cape Town with the home advantage.
And Beijing only had 13 players this week - the first time they've had less than 15. And there highest score.

Panic time for Cape Town.

Congrats RB, disappointing week my end, but well done to get the win. My own stupid fault not naming a defense emergency as that would have won me the game.

Nice to see that we can still perform reasonably well without our best midfielder and defender in Ablett and Houli though, with 7 players cracking the tonne. Still wasn't enough though :(

Waite subbed for 3 points, Moloney subbed for 37, Sandilands subbed for 33.
Think we did well. Goddard (134) was fantastic while S.Thompson finally got a tonne.
Brandon Jack, Mark Blicavs and Nathan Hrovat impressive in the magoos.
