Post by: essendon2 on March 17, 2013, 10:27:11 AM
Haven't seen a thread about it at the moment and I thought it would be a good talking point; so go ahead and post your Elite teams.
We won't necessarily rate them individually, but we can just comment on how some coaches have done particularly well in their drafts!

As far as strategy goes, what type of player were your first three picks?
1: Mid (Swan)
2: Mid (Selwood)
3. Ruck (Maric)

I'm thinking about what is the best structure to go for in the draft as well.

Mine starts in one hour (7pm WST)

It's an 8 man league (5-6-2-5/4) with a Banzai draft order with my first pick being #2.

So I have pick 2, then i think 15,23 & 26?

What is the best approach after the 1st pick? Best player available or have a planned structure/position to aim for?

1st two picks on midfielders or
1st pick mid, 2nd pick ruck
or pick best players remaining available at the time

any suggestions or advice that worked for those who have had their draft?

I'd go with best available as number 1, then look for positions of scarcity, such as rucks & forwards. There's a lot of decent midfielders who can score around the 100 mark, so its not so important to get a 'better' midfielder who can score 105 or 110, as the difference is only a few points. There is, however a big difference between the scoring of the top rucks, with the likes of Cox, Maric, Roughead generally scoring more than a few points higher than those below them.
Essentially the difference in scoring between the #1-3 rucks & the #11-13 rucks is much greater than the difference between the scoring of the #1-3 mids & the #11-13 mids, making high scoring rucks more valuable than non-number 1 mids.
A similar thing applies to the forward line, although the difference isn't quite so pronounced, but its still there.
Another thing to keep in mind is that those who miss the draft & have not done a pre-draft list will often end up with a stacked midfield, but horrible other lines, as the best options there are taken earlier than the 'objective' point-scoring rankings are concerned.

10 man league
Team big bird
Def: Heppell, Rance, Nicholson, Hibbard, Ellis
Mid: Ablett, Swallow, Ebert, McLean, Dal Santo, Mundy
Ruck: Roughead, Bellchambers
For: Martin, De Boer, L. Jetta, Watts, Karnezis
Bench: Bird, Hannebery, L. Thomas, Lobbe

It was an interesting draft with cox being number 2 pick and most rucks being picked up in first 3 rounds
Only major regret is picking Rance because I didn't see Reilly and Newman availible >:(

League of 12 with 22 man team (5-6-2-5/4)

Def: Waters, Duffield, Houli, Burgoyne, Atley
Mid: Pendles, Murphy, Carrots, Fyfe, Wells, Hannebery
Ruc: Cox, Maric
Fwd: Chappy, Lewis, A.Goodes, L.Adams, Karnezis
I/C: B.Goodes, O'Meara, Berger, Dahlhaus

Pretty average team, had some good luck and bad luck; Cox + Maric on the 1 team, Fyfe falling to pick ~80 and Berger as a free agent were pretty great I think 8)
Used my first 4 picks as Mid-Mid-Ruck-Ruck.
