Title: Mascots and Memberships
Post by: ossie85 on February 21, 2013, 10:14:07 AM
Hi all!

I've been thinking about how to approach the idea of 'memberships' since the beginning, and haven't been able to work it out. But now I think this idea could work, and would add an extra dimension beyond drafting, trading and team submission!

It's a bit complicated - so hopefully I express it clearly.....

Mascots

Each team has a mascot. By mascot I mean a separate fanfooty account.

I'll create the 18 accounts, but you can call it whatever you like. Or it can just be something like "MexicoCitySuns" as default.

This mascot will act as your advertisement on the forum (NO SPAM is the number one rule though).

The mascot can be run by yourself, or if you think this is way too much effort, you can share the mascot password with your assistants. The mascot will help in SC and DT threads, rating teams, player advise, etc.

Your mascot will score points based on "boos" and "cheers".

In each post, if you choose, you can add a link to the official Membership tally (explained below). Again, no spamming, as a mod I can police this....

Membership Tally

The membership tally is pretty simple. Just a simple poll with the 18 teams, asking people who they support.

Home Ground Advantage

The home ground advantage is currently the score of your lowest scoring player in a home game. This is generally a small amount, and home game advantages above 50 are rare.

I plan to also include Mascot and Membership data to boost this home ground advantage.

Using this point systems:

Mascot Cheers: 1 point
Mascot Boos: -1 point
Membership Tally Votes: 10 points

I plan to rank each of the 18 teams at the beginning of each round based on the points they have. Teams will receive a greater (or lesser) homeground advantage based on there memebership rankings.

Team Ranking   % Bonus
1   100%
2   80%
3   70%
4   60%
5   50%
6   40%
7   30%
8   20%
9   10%
10   -10%
11   -20%
12   -30%
13   -40%
14   -50%
15   -60%
16   -70%
17   -80%
18   -100%

For example, your lowest scoring player in a home game scores 50 points.

Last year, your home ground advantage would have been a simple 50 points.

This year, it will change depending on how 'popular' your team is. If you are the most popular team, your home ground advantaged is increased by 100%. So instead of 50 points, you'll receive 100 points. If you are the least popular, you won't receive any home ground advantage. If you are the 13th most popular, you lose 40% of home advantage - meaning instead of 50 points, you receive only 30 points. (Not all percentages will be rounded up).

I'd also like to request to m0nty that he advertises this in his fanfooty newsletter or podcast.

Why?

I'm a fan of this idea, I think it will...

- Increase the popularity of the World XVs

- Help out the forum with experienced coaches having more incentive to help newbies on the forum

- Reward the more active coaches, without giving a huge advantage (unlikely this will cause massive changes in results, and membership tallies won't count in finals)

- Add a more entertaining aspect during the year

- Increase the realism by adding membership numbers.

Thoughts?

Questions?

Objections?

i don't really like it because the boo/cheers is so flawed and is abused people give boos for such little things and rarely cheer even if you help them

not to mention mOnty said he was going to scrap the cheers/boos anyway but that was a while ago

just think it doesn't help at all i mean you could just post jokes all the time with your account to get cheers

plus i'm pretty sure multiple accounts are not really allowed this might be an acception though

Agree with kb about the cheers and boos being flawed. Wouldn't surprise me if some coaches made extra accounts so they could continuously boo other teams during the week to make them lose points.

The idea about membership tallies is more interesting and something that I think could work. More members would mean more home support at matches and so should add to the advantage.

Agree with the idea in principle for home ground advantage,

Also do not like the cheers boo ratio because of manipulation.

Question - Will mascot page replace our team thread?

How about this is an idea and relatively simple and perhaps fairer

Using the mascot boards proposed we promote club membership to the FF community - Will encourage more members looking at the xvs competition.

Members join on the mascot page - Coaches keep a membership tally on the first post for you to look at each week.

Home Ground advantage will be based on membership.

Each week clubs are ranked as per membership numbers and then % allocated starting at 100% and decreasing by 5% down to bottom team at 10%.

Home team then has the 50 points multiplied by % for the week.

Though I agree manipulation can occur, so can poll votes? So not sure why the difference. Perhaps just "Cheers" count and not "boos"?

Sorry Ringo, I might not have clear - there is no mascot page or board? Or was this a proposal for one?

Happy to discuss the reward % though

Thanks Oss - My misinterpretation as well thinking the Mascot was a board or thread.

My idea with membership was trying to follow AFL clubs and get FF members to sign to the club to increase Home ground advantage.

Will await final outcome.

I'd lean more to this. Cause people can boo other Coaches Mascot accounts to manipulate things. Leaving it as just Cheers will rule out people booing for no reason.

I like the idea of rewarding active managers and getting a fan base involved! Certainly adds another aspect to World's as well as get more people out there following it and interested in the comps 8).

Definitely sounds like fun and innovative idea, Os! But I do agree with the others in saying maybe it'll be better off with only cheers being counted.

Wow, awesome idea!

Think their could be problems with the boo's, like others have said, Im for bonus points based on cheers!

Im open to new ideas and i like the promting WXV aspect of the idea, just not sure about making it impact game results. It could mean the difference between a win and a loss and your finals campaign. If it goes ahead im not going to put oppostion against it as i have faith in you ossie, but at this stage i wouldnt say im a supporter.

I'm a fan of the idea and thought behind it.

However not a fan of the fact a team could lose their entire HGA. I think there should at least be some kind of home ground advantage no matter how small.

Though that's the same as the real AFL, going to WA and playing WCE vs. playing them in Melbourne is more likely to 'cause you a loss and a finals berth than it is playing them in Melb.

And let's face it, I'm sure flying from country to country is more tiring than flying around just Australia.

Picking up on the finals aspect I would be recommending No home ground advantage for finals to maintain the level field of those that qualified,

Yeah, definitely no home game advantage from Membership/Mascot points, I agree. Still the regular home game advantage should still apply for all finals (except Grand Final). (Same as 2012).

@Nails, agree, might make the least popular 90% discout, not 100.

I don't have the time for the "mascot" idea :/
so not in favour of it at all, although I love the fact your constantly creating new ideas for the competition Ossie :)

Why I think Oss gave the idea to make a Mascot account for each team, and the Coach can give it out to assistants if they wish to do so. SO can get a few people posting if they'd want to. Although some may not have the time for it, which is why if it did come in, I'll probs give to assistants as well and we all post once or twice whenever we come on.

Yeah I guess, although then the competition becomes a popularity contest. :/

Coolio :)

Thinking the Mascots idea might be a bit to extreme an idea, which is fair enough.

How about this - a point systems throughout the year, which will be used as your membership (which will impact your home games in 2014, but not drastically). So no impact in 2013.

Something like you get points for:
- Being the top vote getter in a weekly membership poll (would make a poll each week)
- Being the first team to submit your team each week
- Points for graphic design/team thread
- Highest scoring team for the round
- Highest scoring player for the round
- Points for players getting rewards (All-Worlds, Medals, etc)
- Points for wins (more if they are consecutive)
- Points for making finals.....
- (Ringo idea) Points for each spot increased on the ladder
- Anything else people think of!

Sure, a lot of these advantage the good teams, but some don't. Which is pretty similar to real life....

How's that?

im ok with that ossie.

i dont think i will be getting many points, so will have to try and get my team in early.

i think i have a reasonable thread too. havent seen any other team with thier own flag, might be wrong on that though.

As an encouragement for lower teams who may be disadvantaged with some of the others how about x points for each position climbed on ladder for teams outside the top 8.
