Post by: Nails on November 29, 2012, 03:42:43 PM

Agree, it was about time. Now who to play.... We need to blood some youth before we play England.

Usman/Marsh/Hughes

would not be against any of them getting a run.

NSW: 4
WA: 3
VIC: 1
SA: 1
QLD: 1
TAS: 1

If only the selectors could pick only 4 NSW players these days.... haha It is still a better split than these days. :P

And Ricky Ponting, i know many have criticised his form lately, but he'll be missed in the XI. :'(

Ricky Ponting a legend of the game and there is nothing and noone that can replace him in the Aussie team. An absolute legend and one of the greatest careers, always a competitor. You'll be missed Ricky.

All the best in your future Ricky. An amazing player who will forever be classed as one of world cricket's greats.

Last player from the golden age during the 90s, I'd like to see Khawaja and Hughes bloodied for Sri Lanka series as they are the two best batsmen outside the Test side

I remember when you were young and got punched in the eye by Carlotta at the "Bat and Ball hotel".

No doubt he will swap the bat for a driver and kick arse on the golf course (plays off 0)

I wonder if he might consider taking up gold professionally. He is certainly a good player. Another thing some have talked about him doing is commentating or coaching. I personally would love to see him on the Channel 9 screens next summer.

Last 7 First Class Scores

Alex Doolan, Tassie Tiger

Scores: 149, 95, 60*, 161*, 16, 21, 42

Phil Hughes

Scores: 8, 5, 1*, 92, 26, 158, 8

Usman Khawaja

Scores: 28, 3, 19, 26, 54, 54, 138

And the next test in Tassie

Surely Doolan deserves a shot, the other two already have had there's!

South Africa's pacemen will eat Hughes alive :(

Doolan's Shield average this year is 58 (the highest in the comp for guys who have scored over 400 runs), Hughes is 51, and Doolan has a 161* against South Africa, and I bet Doolan's better at Bellerive than Hughes

It gives me the shower when people bag our champions. He 's been a champion for years and should be acknowledged accordingly. Now we will go through around 2 or 3 three replacements over time and we may well be 3 down for nothing for a year or two.

Ponting is one of the three greatest batsmen in the modern era.

Statistically, he is the most successful captain of all time. One of 3 to surpass 13,000 runs. Given so much to Australian cricket throughout his distinguished career.

And here you are calling him arrogant, selfish and an ordinary captain.

It's childish, jealousy, stupidity and naivety all rolled into one statement.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I could be) ... but first captain to lose the Ashes in ~25 years?

Being captain is more than just batting well. It's about good field placements, about solid tactics, choosing the right bowlers etc. He was a good batter but a terrible captain and has been terrible (except 1 lucky series) for 2-3 years

Post match interviews he came off as smug and arrogant (in my opinion)

Was never a big fan.

Did I say that he needs to continue playing?
Is the fact a batsman's form declines as his age progresses anything new with Ponting?

Why would all of Tendulkar, Kallis, Hussey, Smith etc. be playing?

So by your logic, Bradman was an average batter and captain, because his form declined.

Lara must of been an average batter as well, as must of Hayden

No, none of them walked away at the top of their game.

No one does, regardless of what sport you play.

If you respect someone like Dustin Fletcher, you respect someone like Ponting.

Why doesn't Fletcher just retire? He's just being selfish taking up someone who would be newer's spot.

Do you see how stupid you sound?

There is no logic, no fact anywhere on the earth to support this. The only way to explain any sort of this argument is just bias.

Why do haters gotta hate :( He averaged 100 last summer, struggled in the Windies where EVERY batsmen struggled (except Chanderpaul) and is now is walking away from the game when he knows he is done. Not to mention the invaluable guidance he would have been given everybody's favourite player Michael Clarke (as everyone hated him before he was Captain).

He is walking away when he's finished.

If you take out the series against India (which I know isn't really fair) which gives you an indication how he has gone in all other series

He has averaged: 19.26923076923077

Terrible.

But I don't understand how that makes you or Cic think he's an arrogant and selfish player?

If he was selfish, he probably wouldn't of given up the captaincy to play on further. Heck, that's pretty rare in Australian culture

Post match interviews were always about how the Aussies stuffed up in a loss, how we played bad...

Similar to him more like how he got unlucky etc.

With Ponting was never about the opposition playing genuinely awesome, was just about how bad the Aussies played. It was as if everything revolved around him in the side. We could be playing 6 Bradmans, 1 Gilchrist, 3 Lillees and 1 Warne and if we lost he'd still say it was because of how bad/unlucky we played. Not because of quality opposition.

I hate how everyone ruins these threads with some big argument like the one above. He was a legend of Australian cricket and one of the best batsman ever to grace the game. Can't we just remember the great things that he did?

Unfortunatelly he just can't bat against world class bowling anymore, I really hope he can get a 50 now in the second innings but likely he won't make 20 :-\

I'd suffice with the winning runs, even if they are his only runs.

Wishful thinking I know, but if Warner can stay in for most of or the whole day, then we could score 350+ today and be on the way to winning. And here's some more food for thought, when South Africa beat us at the WACA last time they were 4/414, I'm sure that they could have gone on to make 623.....

It'd make my year if Aust win and Ponting gets a double ton.

Better yet, everyone get's out around him and it's Ponting leading a last wicket stand to win the game.  :P

And he brings up his 250 with a pull shot for 4 that is also the winning runs with nathan lyon on 7* at the other end.

Hope Ponting gets out for a golden duck but we go on to win the game. Can't have him score a double ton, re-think his retirement idea and be a walking wicket for another 2 years.

It's a free forum Ossie. I can post what I like on topic. It's an opinion. I'm allowed one. Get over it if you disagree, don't need to whinge when people have opinions different to your own. It seems to be a popular thing for you however.

I resigned from my mod duties for a few reasons Nails, and you were in fact one of them. Not a major one, but definitely a factor. The major ones was I sold a house, changing jobs, moving interstate and am expecting my first child. The minor one was seeing the absolute trash you were talking about me (and others) in chat.

That's usually the borderline when most realise they're a) being a dick or b) wrong

Look who made the thread.

It's an "about bloody time" thread

Not my fault you all posted off topic!

@Ossie - I didn't even talk about you in chat... You wouldn't be worth my time in chat.

Oh, maybe I made some comments when you quit? I dunno, forgot what I even said... But things only hurt when there's some truth to 'em imo.

Was a great batter, great player and fielder

But an average captain. I feel he should have retired a while ago IMO.

Holds the all time record for test matches won as captain...Kind of suggests he was a pretty decent captain.

He walked into a good team... His tactics were average.

First captain to lose the Ashes in how long? Back to back losses.

Love the send off he got in the end and that pause, look around the ground, and raising of the bat and helmet signals the end of an era, with the last of the Waugh era players retiring from the game.

Averaged just 6 in his final series. If he wasn't retiring he would have been dropped after that game, then he would retire.

It's good that he had the foresight to retire "On his terms" in a way.  :)

One of the most historic images of recent cricket history.

On another note, I realise it's not really anything new, but I have heard that Sachin may well retire if India beat England. Jayawardena has said he will consider retirement after losing (inevitably) to the Aussies this summer and Jacques can't be too far away from the end. All the greats retiring......

Jacques has averaged 67.43 this year w/ the bat and taken 11 wickets (not many wickets, I know)

So I can't really see him retiring any time soon. He's superman tbh.
