Hey everyone, I thought it would be a good idea to run a FanFooty Phantom Draft. We need 18 participants (one person for each team) to run it, so register your interest here by picking a team!
Adelaide – Tbagrocks
Brisbane – nrich102
Carlton – The F.A.R.K
Collingwood – Anubis
Essendon – kilbluff1995
Fremantle – Toga
Geelong – 13Brummy
Gold Coast – Whatlez
GWS – FisherSaints
Hawthorn – JBs-Hawks
North Melbourne – Tominator
Melbourne – NigeyS
Port Adelaide – KoopKicka
Richmond – JROO8
St.Kilda – Spinking
Sydney – Mailman the 2nd
West Coast – Sid
Western Bulldogs – Mr.Craig
The draft order will be the same as the current AFL draft order for this years draft.
When making a selection try and give reasons why you picked them.
You need to be committed!
The draft will start once we have 18 participants.
When picking a player do it in this format:
PICK - TEAM - PLAYER NAME - HEIGHT/WEIGHT - POSITION
COMMENTS ON PLAYER AND WHY YOU PICKED THEM
eg. Pick 1 - GWS - Lachie Whitfield - 184cm/74kg - Midfielder
Lachie Whitfield- Whitfield had to be No. 1. He is the best of this year's draft. He will be a great player in the GWS midfield

Dunno if we can get this finished before the big day but I'll throw my hat in (even though you already know who I'd be picking in the first three rounds :P).
I choose the team who I think will be one of the big winners from the draft - Western Bulldogs.
Collingwood!
I can help someone but don't reckon I could handle the main job.
I support essendon.

I'm keen, but I'm probably not as knowledgeable about the others teams needs other than Richmond.

Still need a coach for:
Brisbane, Carlton, Geelong, Gold Coast, North Melbounre, Melbourne, Sydney and West Coast.
Also what should we do with the Crows? If they lose draft picks do we just kick them out of it? What are your thoughts?
happy to do gold coast JROO :)

When is the draft though? I have exams while the draft is on that's all
Crows may not be the only ones who get stripped of draft picks
Melbourne's tanking investigation could be revealed before the draft and lead to draft sanctions

Always found the 2nd round & beyond more enjoyable for phantom drafts anyway.
yeah it's the later rounds that are harder and more fun have to do some research
can we trade picks? like a 3rd and a 4th round pick for a 2nd round or something like that?
if so if anybody wants to a deal pm me

If FisherSaints is ready to start we can start the phantom draft.
OK, sorry guys. Just got back from school camp!
Pick 1- Lachie Whitfield- Whitfield had to be No. 1. He is the best of this year's draft. He will be a great player in the GWS midfield
Pick 2- Jimmy Toumpas- Toumpas is a great leader and a very good player. He plays a Brett Deledio/ Bryce Gibbs role as a mid/def. He is a definite top 3 person
Pick 3- Jake Stringer- With Tippett going to GWS, they don't need a ruck (Grundy) as Tippett will pinch hit. I think they need a forward and Stringer is the best forward IMO.
There you go guys
With tippett, Cameron and Patton I think aanother forward is the least of their worries.

This is how I want it done:
PICK - TEAM - PLAYER NAME - HEIGHT/WEIGHT - POSITION
COMMENTS ON PLAYER AND WHY YOU PICKED THEM
eg. Pick 1 - GWS - Lachie Whitfield - 184cm/74kg - Midfielder
Lachie Whitfield- Whitfield had to be No. 1. He is the best of this year's draft. He will be a great player in the GWS midfield
Where up to Melbourne now
Digging up heights and weights for guys lower down the draft is going to be a b%$ch, but it's your game so happy to play by those rules.

Oh well if we can't find it doesn't really matter
Pick 4 - Melbourne - Oliver Wines - 188cm/90kg - Midfielder
It was a toss up between Grundy and Wines. Been reading into both a bit, but decided on Wines because in a lot of the phantom drafts I've seen, Wines is up there more so than Grundy who I've seen been predicted to go to a variety of different clubs whether he slips through because of needs or whatever. Wines should be a solid addition to the Dees midfield and from what I've heard is ready made for AFL level.
Give me 5 mins. :)
No worries, was an easy write up. Do you still want me to post for Melbourne's next pick even thought we know it's Viney?

Lachie Whitfield- Whitfield had to be No. 1. He is the best of this year's draft. He will be a great player in the GWS midfield
Pick 2 - GWS - Jimmy Toumpas - 183cm/77kg - Midfielder/Defender
Jimmy Toumpas-
Pick 3 - GWS - Jake Stringer - 191cm/91kg - Forward
Jake Stringer-
*WILL DO WRITE UPS SOON HAVE TO GO OUT*
Pick 5 Western Bulldogs - Brodie Grundy 202cm/100kg Ruck
Even with a bloke by the name of Daniher floating around, Grundy is the standout ruck in the draft and is a great fit at the Bulldogs. A dual All Australian, he is one of the new breed of agile big men who will dominate the comp in years to come. Can also kick a bag of goals when he gets the chance.
Pick 6 Western Bulldogs - Sam Mayes 187cm/78kg Half Forward
This was a difficult decision but the Bulldogs are crying out for more goalkicking options and while Mayes might not entirely fit the bill he does bring plenty of other qualities to the table. Elite endurance and agility matched with a great pair of hands should see him become an AFL regular. All Australian in 2011.
Really can't see Stringer going to GWS, I think Bulldogs likely, I do like Mayes to the Bullies
So does Adelaide's picks stand as they are then?
Pick 7 Port Adelaide - Lachlan Plowman - 191cm/86kg Key Position Defender
With the loss of Danyle Pearce and Troy Chaplin through the Free Agency, it leaves a massive hole in Ports defence, Bobby Carlile, Hamish Hartlett and Jack Trengove need some help back there desperately, Lewis Stevenson, Campbell Heath and Domenic Cassisi will fill it for now, but it means Prts defence is looking scarily good for the with the likes of Blee, Hombsch, Jonas and Plowman coming through Ports ranks. Reagrded as the best defender in this years draft.
PICK: 8 TEAM: Brisbane Lions PLAYER NAME: Tom Clurey HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 193cm/85kg POSITION: Defender
I think the Lions will want to get Clurey to use as a tall defender to fill in the position of players such as Goose Maguire and Merrett. I think they will get him now to start training him for those positions that will be vacent soon.
is there a rule about taking mature players as well?

Pick 11- Nick Vlaustin
you have to wait til Pick 9 is done
Pick 9 - Richmond - Jackson Macrae - 188cm/75kg - Midfielder/Forward
Was very hard to split Macrae and O'Rouke but went for Macrae. Macrae is very versatile and could play anywhere on the ground which appeals to the Tigers. He will be a great midfielder for many years, but believe he will start his career up forward until he has a big enough tank to play in the midfield. He is a great kick of the football and has great composure for a kid.

Why did you pick him Fark?
It was between him coloquhan coz carlton need another small defender, didnt want o rourke
reckon carlton need a small defender to replace the russell role which they missed this year, then a tall fwd and maybe a medium fwd similar to a gray or monfries, then an inside mid to groom once judd leaves would be nice
coloquhan will probs go higher than vlastuin in real draft but im from sa ive seen him play dont really rate him that highly

Don't expect me to take amazing picks seeing as I barely know much about the draft this year.
I'll research a bit
I'm also guessing we can't take Tippett unless it says he's going in the draft?

Yer for now leave Tippett out of it
Pick 12 - GWS - Sam Colquhoun - 179cm/72kg - defender
Sam Colquhoun- Sam is one of the best defenders in this draft. I rate him as a player. GWS also need some good young defender.

Thanks Brummy! We now have 18 coaches!
Up to pick 13 just waiting for Whatlez (waiting for pick 10 from kilbluff but we already know its Daniher)
Pick 10 - Essendon - Joe Daniher (VIC Metro) - Father-Son Selection - forward/ruckman, 201cm, 89kg
Under the father/son rule we will be taking Daniher can anybody blame us? 201c this kid is a gun and is a steal at #10 very agile and a strong overhead mark would have been drafted in the top 3 that's how good this kid is so do i need to explain why i want him at pick 10? not to mention he has Daniher blood running through him.
PS: sorry for being late i just woke up figured Daniher was automatic ;)
already got Pick 15 ready to go...
lez dead. :o
Ok I finally got told on Facebook... I cannot do any of that height, weight thing ATM, but I'll have a look.
This is really bad drafting.
GC won't get him, but Johnathon O'Rourke.
But I would take another player if John wasnt available ::)
Grundy not in top 3. Lololololol

Reasons why you drafted O'Rourke?
How the flower did O'Rourke slip to 13 ::)
Because O'Rourke is potentially a top 5 pick and I'm getting him at 13!

Ok guys what are your thoughts when picking a player:
a. Should we do a write up on the player
b. Keep it the same. Give reasons why you picked them
c. Don't do any write ups just pick the player
or
D. up to the person any of the above
but a description of the players talent would be nice even if it's a copy and paste from google

Pick 15 - North Melbourne - Troy Menzel - SA - forward, 187cm, 78kg
Not sure how this guy slipped to Pick 15 - surprised by a couple of others too but such is the quality of this draft - but he will be a gun if his knee holds up. North Melbourne have a developing group of tall forwards in Lachie Hansen, Drew Petrie and Robbie Tarrant, but Menzel is the mid-sized X-Factor that they need, especially given the inconsistency of Lindsay Thomas and Kieran Harper, as well as the loss of Aaron Edwards. A pacy mid-sized forward, Menzel can play off a wing too, as he did for Central District in the SANFL this year. His injury problems are cause for some concern, but if his knee can hold up then North will have a steal in Menzel at Pick 15.
I think only injury is the reason he will slide to around 15
Slipped cos of the Menzel knees
I reckon 14 or 15 is about right for him.

nothing. If i was a recruiter though just seeing david rodan, malceskie ect all go lars for it to burst again would be worrying. Like yes doctors have said its structrually fine but put a strenuos pre season in him and make him train 4 times a week and then tell me its structurally fine :/ still a good player though
Geelong will take Ben Kennedy with pick 16 - small mid/fwd who "can tear a game apart" (Tominator).
Was a chance to be drafted in the 17 year old mini draft last year but the crows decided on Brad Crouch instead (if I remember correctly).
Will become a cult figure for his tongue antics and will be well mentored by the likes of Bartel / Corey / Kelly.
Pick 17: Fremantle - Mason Shaw - Forward, South Fremantle (WA), 198 cm, 92 kg. It was a toss-up between home-grown talents Mason Shaw and Josh Simpson for Fremantle's Pick 17 - both have attributes that would appeal to Freo's selection panel, and both being from Fremantle was an added bonus. In the end I chose Shaw simply because Pav is getting old, and by the time he retires, the Dockers will really need a KPF to take over from him - this day might be a few years away, but KPP's often take a while to develop, so if they can get this bustling kid ready by then, they'll be set. While I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more outside pace added to Freo's midfield (which Simpson coul have offered), I think that good KPF's are harder to come by, and that Daniel Pearce's recruitment meets Fremantle's need for outside pace for the moment.
Pick 18: Collingwood - Tim Membrey - Forward, Gippsland Power (vic), 189cms, 90kg
The captain of Gippsland Power will fit in nicely at Collingwood, who have been missing a goalkicking medium forward ever since the departure of Medhurst. Membrey's tackling pressure suits Buckley's plan, but it is his potent set shot kicking that gets him drafted to the pies. The tattoo on his arm is also a good fit for Collingwood.
Pick 19: Collingwood - Nathan Hrovat - Midfielder, Northern Knights (vic), 175cms, 74kg
An inside mid in the mould of Toby Green and Sam Mitchell. Selected to add some inside work to Collingwood's team as Luke Ball's career winds down. An elite accumulator of the footy fits in perfectly with Collingwood's possession hungry midfield.
FARK- menzel was more than a decade younger when he had lars, completely different type of way the body recovers at that age.
Well Adelaide is unlikely to have this pick any but I'm sure they would have liked Sammy Colquhoun, well he's gone and though there's other home grown talant to pick they shoudn't go this early, I think they would with the loss of Davis, Bock and an ageing Rutten take
Tanner Smith North Ballarat Rebels
18 yrs 194cm 83kg
Other than Plowman he would be the best key defender which the Crows will need, will develop into an ideal key position at AFL level and with Talia will form the best key duo in the land. With Luke Thompson still developing and the other talls not natural backman hence McKernen, James Craig, JJ (Jenkins), Tommy Lynch. Adelaide will want to grab a quality bigman in Smith.
Collingwood - Nick Vlastuin
Adds a bit of midfield depth but can also be played on a half back flank.

Vlastuin was taken at pick 11. ;)
Oh sorry.
Spencer White.
The next Buddy, no need to say more.
Pick 22 Western Bulldogs - Kristian Jaksch 194cm/85kg Oakleigh Chargers
One of the premier KPP prospects in the draft, Jaksch is capable of playing in the backline (matching up on Joe Daniher in one game) or going forward as he did often this year and being a lead up target. I have no doubt he will go higher in the draft than this. There's a great deal to like about his future prospects in the AFL.

Perfect choice's for the Pies, would have selected the same 2 kids myself.
come on mailman lets get this show on the road
Nick Graham looks like someone who could really fill in the key role that Jude Bolton will leave in a year or two with his midfield work
Pick 24 - Brisbane - Sam Mayes - 187cm/78kg - Mid/Forward
The Lions need a player like this who can take the midfield position after Moloney retires. I think the Lions need a player who they can train and give the experience to take a role in the mids.
Mayes went at pick 6.
It would be very wishful thing for Mayes to go at 24...
Would he pick again ???
Go now or be skipped I reckon, we need to get through this before the real stuff begins.

Pick 24 - Brisbane - Nick Graham - 183cm/79kg - midfielder
The Lions need someone who can play in the mids in 3 or so years. I think that we should start training him now so he is ready to play at senior level.
Spinking's got the next two, but I've got Melbourne after that and we all know Jack Viney's gone with that pick.
Got exams so I'll be out from 11am to 5pm, I'll post a small write up for Viney when I get back, but move on from mine to keep this flowing.

Here, I'll do it for nrich. Not completely sure about Brisbane's needs but just to keep the ball rolling, I'll pick based primarily on talent.
Pick 24: Brisbane Lions - Josh Simpson - Midfielder, East Fremantle. 184cm/73kg.
This speedy outside midfielder would be a steal if he were picked up with pick 24 by the Lions. With an abundance of inside midfielders, with the likes of Redden, Rockliff and now Moloney in the team, Brisbane could really benefit from the outside pace and class of Josh Simpson. Talented disposer of the ball off of both sides of his body, and great in traffic, this kind of player will help the likes of Daniel Rich create fast, penetrating entry into the Lions' forward fifty, creating quality options for the forwards.
The Saints are mainly after key defenders and midfield grunt. I'll do the write ups shortly but we select:
Pick 25: Matthew Haynes
Pick 26: Jesse Lonergan
So we can keep it moving ;)
Not much needs to be said here.
Mebourne - Pick 27: Jack Viney
Father-son pick here for the Demons. This absolute gun in the making is an inside midfielder who attacks the footy and has a great left foot kick on him. Another bonus is the fact that he's been nabbed at 27 rather than having to use 4 which grabbed Ollie Wines.

Pick 38 - North Melbourne - Tim O'Brien - SA - 193cm, 80kg
Gangly tall redhead who has come from being touted at the start of the year as not making the Top 50 to being a more-than-likely first rounder now - Crows may used Pick 20 on him (although I don't see the value in it tbh)... Moved from West Gambier to Adelaide and dominated for SA at the U18s as a tall forward who could pinch-hit in the ruck. Has great speed and endurance but needs more muscle to his light frame. Will be a gem of a player though once he comes good. This year's draft bolter.

Pick 39 - Collingwood - Tom Temay
He's been compared to Heath Shaw. He's a little bit smaller than Shaw so he is the perfect fit for Collingwood, who don't have a good small defender to fill the hole left by Leon.
Pick 40 - Fremantle - Adam Carter - Midfielder/Defender, South Fremantle. 179cm/70kg.
Nippy little half-back/winger will add a bit of outside pace that Freo has missed in recent years. Can also play shut-down roles on small forwards. The addition of Pearce and a bloke like this would add another dimenstion to Freo's midfield.

Pick 42 - North Melbourne - Ben Jacobs - 185cm, 82kg
North will be laughing if they can get Jacobs at Pick 42, but its more likely that St Kilda or Essendon or even the Bulldogs will pounce earlier. Had two years in the system at Port Adelaide and is a former first rounder, so is a bargain for the Roos at Pick 42. Fills a void in defence and can provide run off half-back but also be worked into their midfield rotations
I will go with Jackson Thurlow at pick 43

I'm all for that, cheers for telling me too KB... it's much more noticeable having a new message over an updated topic (if you don't look hard enough)
Wow Thurlow should of not lasted that long.

Bit biased there mate ;)
Nah but you are right, Thurlow will go top 30 if not first round
Dean Towers
I'll take Andrew Boston for midfield/fwd quality
second-round done, Sid is up next with Pick 46

I would have no idea
Basically I have no idea about what Sydney wants in the draft anyway though. Team is too good :P
Finally my pick! :)
Mason Wood.
Q Stick leaving for Victoria left a hole that I think Mason Wood can definitely fill. Standing at 192cm Mason is one of he most mobile tall forwards coming out of this draft and could easily slip into the role Jack Darling has played the last couple of years.
Sam Siggins as a Defender hopefully similar to Alex Johnson for us
Pick 48 - North Melbourne - Tim Sumner - SA - 189cm, 78kg
(http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/2012/draft/SUMNER-Tim-2012.jpg)
Yes, another SA player ::) Speedy outside midfielder who has plenty of run and carry and can change the game. Doesn't get a hell of a lot of the ball but what he does with it is devastating. Can take it at half-back, run 20m and then kick it 60m to the lead of the full-forward, and his defensive pressure is excellent too. Very similar to Lewis Jetta, and North need a bit of spark so this guy fits the bill.
Pick 49: Melbourne - Billy Rolfe - 182cm, 83kg
Medium midfielder who wins his own ball. Placed in the Top 5% at the Draft Combine for agility running the 20m in 2.98secs and 8.16 on the agility test. Clearly has good pace. Obviously would be behind Wines and Viney but would still be a nice player to have.
Pick 50 - Western Bulldogs (F/S) - Lachie Hunter 181cm/78kg Western Jets
Son of former Bulldog Mark Hunter, Lachie is a goalkicking midfielder who racks up the touches. He averaged 113DT through the 2012 TAC season and while he found the step up to Championship level challenging he still performed well. The Bullies have had this kid in their sights for years and he has spent plenty of time at the club already so should make a smooth transfer to AFL level.
Pick 51 - Western Bulldogs - Brodie Murdoch 187cm/85kg Glenelg
While the draft hype coming out of the Bays has mostly focused on Ben Kennedy and Tim O'Brien, Murdoch should not be forgotten. He's not the tallest forward going around but possesses a great leap and hands, as evident in an Under 18's game this season where he kicked 11 goals. He is the younger brother of Geelong's Jordan Murdoch so there's some football pedigree. AFL/AIS Academy member.
52. Essendon -Tom Temay - Defender/Midfielder, Sandringham Dragons. 179cm/74kg.
Kevin Sheehan says: “Small defender/midfielder who is a great competitor and is rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest. Prolific ball winner for Vic Metro averaging 18.8 disposals at 77.3% efficiency in NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. Father Paul played 52 games for St Kilda.â€
perfect for Hirds game style i think
Temay went at Pick 39 mate
woops lol alright i take Adam Saad with pick 52
thanks Tom ;)
Pick 53: Melbourne - Matthew Dick - 188cm, 86kg
Pretty quick, good kick and a strong tackler. Can play of both bigger and smaller opponents. Added bonus is he can play midfield too. Was also a member of the Vic Metro team that won the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
well Crows just disowned pick 54 so guess i go now? with pick 55
we take Kyle Martin - Midfielder, Frankston Dolphins. 182cm/81k
Dolphins coach Simon Goosey had to work hard to persuade Martin to leave south-east suburban club Noble Park, but the 21-year-old has made the step up to VFL level with telling effect. At 182cm, he's a tough, in-and-under player who, despite playing in a team that's on the bottom of the ladder, gets tagged more often than not.
for the point of the FF Draft should we just keep the Crows in it?
I know its a Phantom Draft but T-Bag hasn't been caught up in any of this (that we know of anyway) :P
Wow have not followed at all, haven't been on FF since Sunday. Someone can pick for me when Gold Coast comes. 57 is the number.
well we want to see how close we get it to the actual draft don't we?
not much different then the father sons have to keep them at the right picks to keep it as close to the real one as possible
it's harsh on tbags i know but what can you do
Hey guys sorry but I'm gonna be without internet for the next 5 days and I've got geelong at 59 i think..
could someone do that pick for me?
cheers
Is there really any point doing this beyond tomorrow?
