POSITION: Back/Forward

AGE: 28

HEIGHT: 196cm     WEIGHT: 96kg

OFFICIAL PRICE FOR 2013: $132,600  B/F

2010 GAMES: 22   DT AVERAGE: 73

2011 GAMES: 7   DT AVERAGE: 53

Summary:

2009 Played 6 games and left West Coast for Brisbane

2010 The success story of the Lions imports in 2010. Tall and athletic the former eagle had the fourth most kicks, the second most marks and the fourth most rebounds from 50 for the club. Rarely lowered his colours and finished 7th in the best and fairest. Established himself as an important part of the side right from the start.

2011 Following a successful transition from West Coast in 2010. Staker started 2011 horribly undergoing LARS knee surgery after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in round 1. Re-injured the same knee in round 23 and missed the entire 2012 season.

2012 Didnt play a game due to injury

Verdict: If he can successfully return from his knee injury and get a pre season into him with some Nab performances i dont see why he couldnt be selected to play round 1. At a price of $101,600 he would be a great bench option

Prediction: average of 60 ?

Brent Staker soaks up Broken Hill sun before pre-season

The Brisbane Lions utility has had a turbulent year after a knee reconstruction failed to heal he was forced into a season long rehabilitation.

Speaking to Outback Outlook Brent said he is now looking forward to the 2013 season.

"It's been a tough year and I'm officially out of rehab now so I'm officially right to go".

"We're looking very strong, we have lost a few players already... but I'm hoping there's some good trades and there's some good drafting coming through in the next two months.

"I'm expecting big things because we've won our ten games this year you sort of can't rest on your laurels and say oh we've improved and won ten games," he said.

+1, that's the best combo to utilise that link imo. Almost impossible to refuse if rookie priced such as he is on fanplanner. Provided he is named round 1 locked for me.

If he gets a gig round 1 will pick him. Hopefully stays on the park because is exactly what Brisbane are lacking, that second foward. Should mean rocky in the mid more aswell

At those prices and assuming they are fully fit, not taking advantage of that flexibility would be pretty foolish.

Effectively rookie price and with the potential to score well and play regular games.  Will be watching to see where he fits in Brisbane's line up, and whether he is fit, but definately on the radar.

staker and bock at these prices will be cool.

i'm contemplating hurley as a back premo this year as well as  starter, so 3 possible B/F's couldn't hurt.

Just watched some vids of their Arizona camp and he seems to be moving pretty well and in good spirits.
He seems very well liked in the club too going by their vids. Couldn't be a bad thing.

so many good F/B options ......Lake, Broughton, Hurley, Pederson, Staker, Bock, Lee  8)

all realistic options to consider and will add much needed flexibility to our teams

There are 2 Tom Lee's on fanplanner, the St Kilda one is forward only so who's the other one with f/b eligibility?

There's a few little glitches in Fanplanner. One is the double Tom Lee (the same person), another is Jack Martin and Jed Anderson who are both listed at $101,600 aswell as $96,200. Then there's Jake Neade who is listed as mid only AND forward only.

I'm waiting to see if m0nty sorts it all out once the draft is over, if not I'll throw a message his way. ;)

Staker's two years of torment over: Lion ready to return

AFTER a nightmare two years, Brisbane Lion Brent Staker can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel.

In round one, 2011, Staker ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and opted for LARS surgery.

Despite the quick recovery, the procedure bombed, and just six matches into his comeback later that year, he ruptured the LARS augmentation and was out again.

This time Staker took the more cautious approach and underwent a traditional knee reconstruction.

But it was no simple process.

He went into surgery and came out to the news his surgeon needed a bone graft to repair the knee and would require him back in the operating theatre in six months' time. There he would need a hamstring graft.

Both times it was a long rehabilitation process with no football in sight.

But last Monday, for the first time in 16 months, he trained flat out with the full Lions' squad.

"It was a surreal feeling because 12 months ago I was starting pre-season on a new bike and riding around Brisbane non-stop, so it's been terrific to be able to be part of the training sessions," Staker said.

"The shackles are off and I've been released back into the wild."

Staker attended the Lions' two-week high altitude camp with 17 teammates in Arizona in November and got through with flying colours before returning to Australia to link with the full squad.

While slowly returning to contact work â€" which will be full-on in the coming weeks â€" he has no doubts of being fully fit and available for the NAB Cup.

But it's been a slow journey, full of self doubt for the 28-year-old.

He said coming out of his first operation last September was particularly difficult.

"When I came out they said I needed to wait six months for another operation, it was a bit disheartening and a bit flattening because when you wake up from an operation you expect to be healed," he said.

"I was a bit pissed off, a bit annoyed, but had to wait my time, six months.

"Going in for another operation I thought 'really, do I have to do this again?' You know what to expect with the pain and what you're going to feel. The hamstring graft is 10 times more painful than a LARS operation so it wasn't great."

Between operations, Staker acquainted himself with a road bike and began racking up the kilometres around Brisbane to keep fit and regain the strength in his inactive leg.

It was a similar process following the hamstring graft in February once he got off the crutches.

Hours and hours on the bike have slowly been replaced by hours and hours in the gym to regain strength in the hamstring, which is still not quite at maximum power.

The former West Coast utility came to the Lions at the end of the 2009 season and was clearly the best of Michael Voss' recruits during 2010, mixing his time as a third tall forward and defender.

He said with so much time on physio tables and rehabilitating, there had been many chances to ponder the upcoming season.
"There's been an enormous amount of thoughts go through my mind," he said.

"Is it going to be better? Is it going to get back to what it should be? Am I going to be able to play footy again? Am I going to be able to kick properly because it's my kicking leg? All those things.

"I'm a realist and think things through and try to not get depressed or down on myself. Being around the boys at the club was good and watching the boys train kept me motivated."

Now entering the fourth and final year of his contract at the Lions, one of the club's most popular players said he was not looking too far ahead.

Voss has clearly indicated there is a role for the versatile big man, and Staker thinks he's now in as good a shape as ever to contribute when given his chance.

"I'm confident in my body. I'm 28 now and I think I'm in some really good condition," he said.

"At the end of the day it's about having fun. I've missed a year-and-a-half of footy so I just want to have fun and see where it goes. Because I've missed so much I don't want to set the bar too high.

"It'll be such a thrill. The first time I run out or the first game I'm involved in, the endorphins are going to be going crazy, the adrenaline, I can't wait."

Staker more of a chance than Pittard at this stage... His DPP will come in handy should I decide to go with one of Broughts or Bocky but otherwise there are probably better scoring rookies around

Did you read the article .. lol

His knee is heavily bandaged, but he looks as fit as always. Ridiculously fit in fact.

Then he leads at the footy and you hold your breath

Now he is fit, but he must still force his way back into a side that has been bolstered by key position players Stefan Martin (Melbourne), Jordan Lisle (Hawthorn) and Billy Longer (2011 draft)

"I've got to earn that game," he said.

"It would be unfair to come in and be a walk-up start. You have to fit into the team structure you have to be able to get a kick.

Yep same for me, all three are locked. Not sold on Lee's scoring potential but I feel as though his JSl will be pretty reasonable.

Yeah, should have good js.  Kind of like Dickson of last year, though he had a few decent scores as well.

This is what Rockliff says about Staker

How is Brent Staker going? What sort of role can we expect from him?

Yeah he is flying mate going well!! Will play a key role for us!
He is a lock for me along with Macaffer and Lee

Yep same for me, all three are locked. Not sold on Lee's scoring potential but I feel as though his JSl will be pretty reasonable.

Dickson... ::)

Showed absolutely nothing when I had him in my team, then pumps out some big ones as soon as he's traded. ::)

Haha, I was lucky because I started with him and he basically sat on my bench for the entire year, but the couple of times I needed he came through.  Even pumped out a ton when it was looking likely I'd lose. xD

I reckon Lee could definitely be the Dickson.

As for Staker, I don't see why he shouldn't be locked. he's probably the best rookie priced option for either one's forward line or back line.

Staker, Stringer and Neade will be my rookie forwards.

Will Lee really has any job security..? He's an out-and-out forward, with Riewoldt, Kosi, Stanley, Sipposs already more established, along with the group of small forwards Milne, Milera, Saad, Schneider and the recently traded in Trent Dennis-Lane. Where does Lee fit in? Also, the Saints surely didn't pick up Hickey for him to play VFL most the year, so 2 rucks being started would surely work against Lee's chances as well.

I can only justify starting Staker & Macaffer in my forwards line rooks, they'll take the bench every week as I take a punt on the 3 mid-priced options for the forward line.

So you cant take a punt on a rock bottom priced player who has alot better chance than most forward rooks of getting a game or two this year ? If that is your strategy then fair enough but for those who are not Lee is a good option for their benches
