Dean Cox evades... Someone.
Dean Cox was taken with pick 19 in the 1999 rookie draft. It took the big man a while to really become prominent as he played second fiddle to ten time nutcase Michael Gardiner. When the opportunity did present itself though Coxy took the opportunity with both hands. He was a key figure in the Eagles 2006 premiership triumph. Since 2005 Coxy has been one of if not the best ruckmen in the AFL.
Pros
History - Coxy has incredible DT scoring history. He is a superstar of the game and since 2005, when he lifted his average from a mediore 77 to a premium-like 95, has averaged over 100 DT points per game in all but two seasons. One of these seasons was 2006 when he was still well and truly on the rise. The other was 2010 when a severe groin injury coupled with a wooden spoon hampered Coxy's 22 games. Apart from these two seasons however Coxy has been the most prolific ruckmen in the AFL Dream Team.
Team - As seen with Shuey he plays in a team that should be up and around the top 4 team in the comp. This means more shellackings and more time forward as the Eagles look to develop Nic Natanui and therefore A LOT more +9's
Injuries - Over his 11 year career Cox has played 213 of a possible 242 games and this includes games very early in his career when he was not the number 1 ruckmen at the club. He is very resilient and has the ability to play while injured and still score well enough (see all of 2010)
Cons
Price - Is 532k too much to pay from the outset? I think it might be but a better quesion is do you want the best ruckmen in the competition in your team from day dot? I also think so... Could be an awesome upgrade target...
Age - He is pretty old but to be fair many ruckmen peak late and are able to play as 34-35 year olds. Coxy's has 2-3 years in him AT LEAST imo.
Conclusion
There is no doubting Coxy is a superstar but will Nic Nat's increased influence hamper his scoring? I doubt it. Cox to play more forward line in a top 4 team. Bring on the +12's. I think he will equal last years mammoth effort.
Ele's predicted 2012 average - 107
Great player. But his price is a lot to pay for someone 70 K cheaper that will average, probably not the same. But all the cash you save is very beneficial.

haha im glad you noticed windy! great to be back on board :D
You doing year 12 as well?
yes i am, so im afraid my input will be severely affected this year :'( but next year i'll be all over the noticeboard again :P are you?

Afraid so. It took me about 3 weeks to get back into school mode. :P
yeah i have played around with my team to get him in and the only way it works out i think is to add as many as 2 mid pricers instead of premiums in fwd and back lines. ( 1 in each or 2 in either).
that or put him in with a mid priced ruck instead of a second premium, neither option appeals to me so pass
Cox is the number 1 ruck in the comp and his fantasy output is heads and shoulders above his peers.
I think that you have to have him your team at some stage. There's no other ruckman in the comp that will avg 120+ in SC. I think there are a few that have a shot of averaging 110 - 115+ but not much more than that.
If you can start with the best, then go for it. For the record I'm starting with Cox.
He will be an upgrade target for me :)
lock and load
pass
not really keen on the big and old cox want some youth in my masterpiece (so i have gone giles)
hahaha

Also a very very good option :P
yeh have gone the 2 premi rucks so lock and load, if one dies then they are replaced
Hahah good option. I think I am starting to lean toward this...
just quietly Brent Renouf is going to tear up this season. Friom what i have seen from him on track this year he is now an elite ruck in for an 80av season
BASHERS FTW
Yew!!
Cox by far the best ruck in the comp .. he will average heaps more than the other donks ... when he starts smashing out big scores at the start there will be tears if you dont have him :'(

Yeah, and i'm going without him. Only option is to have him over Sam Jacobs, and i like his competition in the ruck (none)
Another thing to note about the Cox v NicNat thing is that Cox played with Seaby for a long time, so he should be used to it...
I've had Leuneberger Locked in as 1 of my top 2 Rucks and Cox may be my 2nd one. He Is a Gun but will age start to hinder him? :-\

I doubt it. Ruckmen peak much later than other AFL players. I can see him being around it 2-3 years still.
I liked the bottom option. Good inclusion to the thread.

and im pretty sure Renoufs injured, at least for start of season.
Also LEUEY is a GUN and im having him and H-mac
Im going Sandi, H-Mac(or start Giles) and will upgrade H-Mac/Giles to Cox when they have peaked.

I wont be waiting that long 6-7 weeks should be enough ... although i wont be upgrading to cox ill be starting him and upgrading to the next best ruckman at the time
People are talking of upgrading into the byes. I would only do this if you have a very strong rookie and are waiting for one premo in particular. Ideally your team should have 22 premiums (unless there are some Barlows around the place) by round 14.
Really want Coxy..... Currently have Jacobs + Mummy...
locked, loaded and loved!
From an article in today's West Australian:
"Particularly, we've got a few guys who are plus-30 now, plus with the travel. I'd be surprised if, for example, myself and Coxy play every game this year.
"(I'd be surprised) if we're not occasionally rested. I think it's a path that not only West Coast, but most sides will be looking at now."

Does this make Cox less of a lock as number one DT ruckman this year?
I think Cox is a gun, but I've gone with Sandi this year. Still should be in the top 3 ruckman this year though, I'm just hoping he's thrid behind Jacobs and Sandi. :P
locked in baby
Is anyone starting with Cox and Sandi? Seems as though it could be a unique ruck formation as I can't recall seeing many teams with it. =/

reminds me of the good ol days of dreamteam
Ive got Cox as my number 1 at the moment. I think one of my big cash cows just became permanent cover for my ruck.
The article from the West sounds ominous but Coxy is so damn important to our side I think we would only rest him if we were certain we'd be leaving the place with 4 points... Nic Nat is an awesome replacement though :P
Looks like he may have won over a few fans with his demolition job of Essendon and Freo...

So, he may be rested for games which he would usually score well in? Hmmmm...

I don't think Cox is the kind of player to want to be rested. If he can play he'll want to be out there and they're gonna have a hard job telling him he can't play.
The only time he'll be rested is if he gets a bit of a niggle.
I predict that he will be rested from one game towards the end of the season to freshen him up for finals if we have already secured a top 4 spot. Then with the bye he gets two breaks for the season which is more than enough for him.

Cox will get rested i have no doubt. Eagles got absolutely smashed by better team management when they played Geelong. They have Nic Nat and they need to start putting faith in him as it will only make him better.
Agree with Memph here Kuruki.
Even with a severe groin injury Coxy played all 22 games in 2010. I think when they ask him how he wants to be managed he will look at his training schedule. For example replacing an impact session with an extra recovery/physio session.
Keep It Simple Stupid ;) Don't look too far into it ;D
I also doubt he'll be rested
2010- cox plays injured, weagles come 16th
2011- cox plays fit, arguably career best, weagles come 4th.
im not sure but didn't cox start having a few back problems towards the end of the season and back spasms, and hence his scoring output dropped noticeably in the second half of the season....which could make him slightly underpriced to some extent....if thats even possible :P
Thoughts after today?
Was soundly beaten by Redden. Really was 100% there today. Not many second efforts or massive gut runs for marks and kicks....
Still an upgrade target for me!
Also should note that on the very rare occasion he does get soundly beaten he still racks up 80 DT points!
So he just wasn't trying very hard in your opinion?
was anyone else rucking for WCE?
and more to the point, will that have cemented reddens spot for a while at port?
In my opinion he was going at about 60% he didn't run hard for midfielder-like possesions. No-one else rucked with him. Lycett and Nic Nat are both sore from knocks/surgery...
Ask FARK about Redden :P

Great write up on the big man BTW LE, upgrade target for giles in DT for me and won't have him at all in SC this year unless one of starter premiums fails to fire, then i might go sideways to him mid season.
Doubt Cox or Sandi or goldy or burger or mummy or mcevoy for that matter were really trying in previous nab games or will for that matter. It's so hard to rate players form when the care factor is so low for the comp at most clubs, i think bucks wanted a win in the nab game last night and still couldnt get his players to care enough to beat the dee's who looked good for 3/4 i must say.
Hahaha yeah Collingwood were average against the Dees.
I think COxy will still average 105-107. Just warming to the 2012 season :)
I think cox will be the no. 1 ruckman this season, but it is what you can do with that extra 50k by not picking him, that could get you those extra points in some other position. eg heppell to deledio, murphy to swan etc
