Title: Ele's Exceptional Eagles Write-ups - Luke Shuey
Post by: elephants on February 25, 2012, 07:10:02 PM
Hey lads,

Name:                     Luke Shuey
Age:                        21
2012 Price:             $413,000
Position:                 Midfielder
Games:                   35
Goals:                     33

Shuey (right) celebrates with fellow young gun Matt Rosa.

Luke Shuey was selected with pick 18 in 2008. He had a slow start to his AFL career with the tragic death of his sister followed by galndular fever which saw him sit out a majority of his first years with the Eagles. In exchange for standing by Shuey during these shocking and frustrating circumstances Victorian Shuey says he loves the Eagles and never wants to play for anyone else. He is on the verge of becoming an elite inside midfielder in the competition too!

Pros
Young - He has so much time to prove himself and it seems that the Eagles fans and Coaching staff alike have A LOT of time for this young superstar. This youth leads to the scary thought that from this point as an all round footballer he is on the improve.

Team - Might be a little bias but Shuey plays for a club that should and is challenging for the top 4 positions and is possibly looking at challenging for a flag in the next 5 years. This obviously means more often than not his team is winning games and at times pretty comfortably. These 'easier' games will potentially lead to fantasy points galore!

Versatility - Shuey has the capabilities to play off the forward flank and has an excellent eye for goal. Almost a goal a game in the midfield highlights this. On the chance he gets a tag he has the authority and permission to move into the forward line and cause some headaches for opposition taggers with through scoreboard pressure.

Taggers - Generally teams haven't looked to being taggers to Perth when playing against West Coast since the Judd- Kerr- Cousins era. Shuey - Gaff - Priddis however have started to gain a little attention over the course of last year... However, it has been noted that teams struggle to tag Shuey as if he does cop some attention he can slide into the forward line and cause some +9's to add to his score...

Cons
Price - He is an awkward price but let's be honest he is only 10k LESS than Barlow and 30k more than Hayes.

Injuries - Clutuching at straws here as personal loss and glandular fever are not exactly recurring injuries but still a point can still be made here.

Conclusion
I can see a really big year for Shuey. Especially if the Eagles are up and around the top 4 teams in the league. If Gaff and Rosa improve as expected, stalwarts Embley and Kerr stay injury free and fringe players Masten, Stevens and Swift begin to help lay blocks and dish off the ball to Shuey more often I think we can see a big increase on the cards.

great writeup dude

yeah i'm not sure about shuey, i think he has the potential to average 100+ but don't think he gets enough cheap pill and general possies around the ground to do it yet... that may change this season though and there's little doubt that he's going to be a superstar

Atm I am looking for Barlow's replacement and this has just about convinced me to get on him unless Sloane/Hayes rips up the rest of NAB.

Was a bit stiff not to get the Rising Star award last year, future top 10 player of the comp. Probably not one to consider for DT this year but could be a good option for SC.

Locked in for SC.

A really good write up. He has a similar early career to pendles. Illness and few odd things here and there but has still been solid. A full pre season u der his belt so I'm expecting a jump to 100

Nice write up LE and you make some good points on why Shuey is someone worth considering for a successful fantasy team. Being a fellow eagles supporter I would love to fit him in my side as a 4th midfielder, however I'm having a tough time fitting him my team given that I have Priddis as my #3 midfielder and I've gone for a 3 gun, 3 rook approach at this stage. I really think that after Shuey's finals experience last year will give him the drive to improve this year and this will mean improved fantasy scores this season. 100-105+ in SC sounds about right this season IMO.

QuoteAre you joking? He won't even average 88, he's overrated.

As for this comment everyone is entitled to their opinions. But c'mon, at least if you say something back it up with evidence to support your opinion. LE has provided compelling evidence to suggest that Shuey will improve his output and not too many midfielders score a goal a game on average.

These are some pretty out-there rumours considering this...

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/eagles/10131788/shuey-reveals-why-he-wants-to-be-an-eagle-forever/

"West Coast is my home now, it's my life and I'm planning on spending the rest of my career here.

"I love the club and what they've been able to do for me shows not only do they want to be successful in football, but they want to be successful off-field and support us as much as they can.

"They've won me over and hopefully we can stick together and get some success in the next few years."

I am very confident the star will stay...

Great player and definitely one for the future, but one thing to note LE.

Injuries - Clutuching at straws here as personal loss, glandular fever and stress fractures in the foot are not exactly recurring injuries but still a point cans till be made here.
Well that's just not right at all. Stress fractures can easily come back (I should know I've had them recurring in my back for years), especially in a foot when he spends his whole time running. That is just weight compounding against his foot over and over. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if his career is plagued by foot injuries (which would be a shame).

Oh okay sorry mate. I have also had foot stress fractures about 4 years ago and have had no problems since then so I was basing it on that.
I should have done some proper research. Ooops thanks for the pickup mate.

Haha no worries, wasn't trying to make you sound stupid, reading back on what I said it kinda sounds like I was being deliberately mean. I'm guessing you don't do anywhere near as much running as what an elite athlete would do, which is why you may have never had problems again. Obviously it differs from person to person and it may have healed perfectly and will be fine the rest of his career, but then again it may not have. Let's hope it has healed correctly, but only time will tell :)

As an Eagles fan I really want to fit Shuey into my team this year as I also reckon he may average close to 100.

However, there just aren't enough midfield spots atm :(

I think he'll be a good pick-up but give it one more season before he's consistent enough for me to lock him in.

To answer your questions...

Yes I am calling a 19 year old overrated. There is such thing as being a young player that is overrated... In this case it is Heppell. Walking around half back picking up loose ball and being hailed as a future brownlow medallist is overrated.
No I am not retarded. Are you ten years old?
There are 22 games in a season not 10. When he averages 118+ in a season come talk to me. Last year ONE player averaged over 118. That was Dane Swan.

Haha.
I reckon Koby, Masten and Swift are all fighting for Eberts vacated position. I'll do a write-up on him later today, probably while the footy is on. Although 12 handballs and 2 kicks in the nab cup game vs your lot tells us he can find the pill just needs to drop it on the boot a little more!!

Perhaps the extra weeks off will help him?

Very very minor. This probably put him into more contention for my team.
