Is was thinking we have:
1 week of official trade negotiations. Where trades don't actually happen, but people have time to contact people and vice versa (basically I don't want people to trade Player X for Player Y before they've seen other options and try to reverse things...).
And then a 2 week trade period...

2. Since there is (after voting) no limit on how many players you can have, can we trade multiple players for a single player?

Have you monitored the euros?
trade restrictions pre-season may not be necessary (or extremely stringent), it took 11 days for the euros first trade to be passed (Cale Morton for Daniel Conners), and even 3 weeks after trading was officially opened (although there were discussions before hand from memory), only 5 trades to date have been made, with only 5 teams participating.
The worry about trades were trade-happiness, but we haven't really seen that as of yet :S

One of our players was getting too big for his boots, and had to be put in his place. Management has decided that it's probably best if we seperate these players and see if we can trade one of them away. One of the players involved is a legend, and untouchable. Let's say you have a 20 year old mid averaging 80, with potential to improve. You wouldn't trade them for a 30 year old mid averaging 90, would you? Of course you wouldn't. However, if the 30 year old averaged 100 you might look at it. Therefore I am going to apply the theory that 1 year = 2 points.
Other factors taken into account will be that when being swapped for mids, the forwards and backs are going to have to have 5-10 points added value depending on how high up the rankings they are expected to be in their respective positions. Franklin for example, who averaged 110, is equal in value to a 120 point averaging mid of the same age.
Everyone is going to have their own opinions of what the expectations are, but it shouldn't be too difficult to get a rough estimate based on history, and factors such as natural improvement due to an extra preseason and more experience. Franklin should be looked at as a 110 averaging player again. Andrew Gaff should not be looked at as a 60 averaging player.
These should be some guidelines taken into account when deciding on if trades are fair. It's what i'll be doing if you attempt to trade with me. It's all logical, so it should be rather simple to know what I am going to think of a trade before you even ask. The only thing up for debate is what our expectations are.
I rate rucks to be the most valuable because of how quickly the quality drops off. An early 'first round' ruck pick is worth a hell of a lot more than a 2nd round (pick 19+) ruckman. Dean Cox vs Seaby. It doesn't hurt as much in the mids. Pendles vs Gibbs. You'll still get a good enough mid with the early 2nd round pick. Rucks 1st, Forwards and Backs equal, mids last IMO.
If you rank players in their positions, you should be able to see what is fair. Don't take age into account yet.
Pendles is number 1 for mids. Franklin is number 1 for forwards. Minimal age difference. Output isn't expected to change. Fair trade.
Wells is about the 20th best mid. Petrie is about the 15th best forward. This says Petrie is worth more, but Petrie is a little bit older so it's close enough to being even, despite the fact that Wells averaged 10 points more.
Using this logic, and rating Christensen as a 90 point player based on his 2011 average of 86* and expected improvement, this puts him at about the 20th best forward. *= full games not used as the sub. I don't expect the Cats to use him as the sub after having another year of development into him and another preseason. So I would be expecting about the 20th best mid for him, maybe higher if they are significantly older than him. Christensen for Gibbs (as a mid only) sounds crazy, but it would be a fair trade.
