Title: Have a Question on rookies? Ask away
Post by: MTTY on December 23, 2011, 07:19:31 PM
So as some of you may know i tend to follow rookies a lot throughout seasons outside the AFL in; SANFL, VFL, WAFL, NEAFL, TSL and mainly TAC Cup and U18 Champs.

So if you have any queries on who's game style will suit SC? Who will get games? etc. Ask away and i will try to answer to the best i can.

Bews from geelong (FS pick :P )

Allen is very good pick up for SC. He has great disposal skills by both hand and foot, he also kicks very long adding extra points on. He was one of QLD's best at the U18 carnival and has made a stunning recovery from OP.

The fact that Allen is listed as a C/B makes him all the more tempting, so for me he is a very good unique rookie pick for SC. Beware of his OP problems in 2010 though.

Bews is an interesting one, being picked up as a F/S put him on the radar but the kid does have some talent about him. Bews is one of those players that always gives 100% and never gives up in a game so you know he will always be trying to get involved in the play. Jed is a silky smooth mover, who has the body and height to push into the senior next season, something which Jed could infact do. Bews managed to sneek into the Geelong VFL side for three games last year, again showing his workrate to suceed and improve.

The major problem for me is that Bews will struggle for gametime at the Cats and out of the rookies that they picked up he is a fair way down the order from them.

Where David Swallow did (79.5) or there abouts they are very similar players and in my opinion will both be elite in AFL and Fantasy football.

What would your top 10 at the draft look like if you included all the pre listed GWS players like Cameron, Treloar and Shiel? Not for SC purposes.

T. Mohr

Sorry for so many :S

I'd be interested for your thoughts on Anthony Miles as he was GWS's leading DT player last season.

What do you think of:

S. Clifton
A. Saad
T. Milera
T. Bugg
A. Treloar
S. Rowe
T. Mohr

Sorry for so many :S

Clifton - He is a very good mature ager who could very well be like Barlow. He has good speed, is good in contested situations and forms a great duo with GWS ruckman Giles. Former JJ Liston trophy winner.

Saad - Offers a lot of value this year as a forward, should sneak into the Saints line-up and free up Milne a little more. He has the ability to involve himself in games and surprising isnt too much of an impact player as he tends to stay in games with good consistency. He will be one of the highest picked rookies, but remember FP players can drift in and out of games.

Milera - Milera could see himself in the Saints 22 in the openign rounds mainly through his speed and ability to play both as a forward and midfielder. He is a fairly skilled player by foot and loves kicking goals playing as a midfielder. Will be a unique rookie pick for fantasy with mosts attention on Clifton, Zorko and Saad.

Bugg - I honestly don't see Bugg getting a lot of games next year. His DPP makes him more appealing but he tends to play more time in the middle then defence and with GWS' stocks in the midfield probably won't make the cut. Even if he gets games Bugg tends to play as a tagger for GWS, will that change? Player of the future for me.

Treloar - Speedy half forward/ midfielder player who adapts very quickly, and has very sharp skills. He and his close friend Dylan Shiel will form quite a combo next season. Treloar i think will play more as a forward in his first year; Gray, Dangerfield etc. He shoudl get games and could be a good pick up next year.

Rowe - Picked up to play a role at Carlton and that is as a KF. Not really too similar to PODS in his body but he is a strong marking tall. Offers value in the forward lien although i would be more reluctant to pick a player like Zorko.

Mohr - Was one of the better KB's available outside the AFL, and will play as a lockdown full back for GWS. Could offer a bit in fantasy as a mature player as he likes to set up the play, and i have thought about including him on numerous occassions in my team.

He was my favourite rookie when GWS picked him up and i was dissapointed at the fact he would not be playing in 2011. He is a very good midfielder, reminds me of Dane Swan, has the capacity to run all day. He gathers loads of possessions and with that being said is better suited to DT, however his disposals his fair good also making him good in both forms of the game.

Which ten rookies do you think are most likely to be in a starting 22 by round 1? (Preferably not just from GWS :P)

Who do you think is seriously underrated? (in terms of supercoach, i.e durability, consistency, not just talent)

Cheers!  ;D
Title: Re: Have a Question on rookies? Ask away

1. Tom Mitchell - SYD
2. Jonathan Giles - GWS
3. Dylan Shiel - GWS
4. Curtley Hampton - GWS
5. Dayne Zorko - Brisbane
6. Ahmed Saad - STK
7. Steven Morris - Richmond
8. Brandon Ellis - Richmond
9. Luke Brown - Adelaide
10. Stephen Clifton - GWS

(Not in order)

My top three for underated would be

Luke Brown - Talked up a lot by Adelaide and is almost certainly locked for round 1. He will play as a half back flanker i assume and with his good efficiency should be good for supercoach.

Brandon Ellis - Has trained the house down at Richmond, should start in round 1 as half back. He is one of if not the best disposers in the draft by foot.

Tom Mitchell - With Sydney sealing him way before the draft with a F/S, we was hardly talked about. Mitchell missed most of the U18 Champs through injury but in teh last game of it for WA he was sensational. Mitchell's highlight of his junior career would have to be his 41 disposals in a match while on tour with the AIS/AFL team. He plays very similar to Scott Pendlebury.

At this point i do. Although Michelle is still a rookie, i think he will be upgraded and play a major part in the Port team as a mid. Compared to Treloar who although he has talent, i see playing more as a forward, with less games throughout the year in a rotation system.

Basically as stated above. Although i rate Treloar as a better future prospect, in terms of next season i would rather Pfeiffer. If Treloar were at a club that did not have so much young talent (rotational policy) i would probably choose Treloar over him.

Really like Smedts. He is currently training very well and has received high praise from Scott for it. I think he is of great value due to the fact he can play as a midfielder, forward or defender in the Geelong line-up.

I'm looking at the mid rookies.

Who would be your top 4 out of:
E. Kavanagh, T.Mitchell, C.Wingard, D.Shiel, S.Kerridge, D.Tyson, J.McDonald, C.Hampton, S.Clifton and A.Miles?

Right now I'm thinking Mitchell, Shiel, Kerridge (mainly for DPP) and Kavanagh. But I would like to hear your thoughts.

Also, what do you think of Tory Dickson from the Bulldogs as a rookie forward?

For me out of those i would have to say the best scoring potentials are; Shiel, McDonald, Mitchell and Kavanagh, but if you want to chuck a DPP in there like Kerridge, then the three i would go for would be -

. Shiel
. Mitchell
. Kavanagh - Beats McDonald just as he is very efficient by foot.

Tory Dickson was very appealing if he was a C/F, as a forward only he still warrants selection, due to the fact that the Bulldogs have picked the mature ager to play a role for the team. He should play most games and will add a hardness to the Doggies game.

A "major" part in the Port team?? Do I take it from that that you think that he will play most games & score fairly well? Or be more a run-with/role player?

Also, a couple of head to heads:
1. Milera vs. Saad? (fwd rookie spot)
2. Kavanagh vs. McDonald? (mid rookie spot) - I know you just answered this, but do you really think Kavanagh will play as many  games as McDonald??
3. Nathn Blee vs. Jackson Allen? (back rookie spot)
4. Do you really rate Docherty above Marty Clarke?? (obviously, back rookie spot)

Thanks heaps for all of your advice - very, very helpful & an impressive knowledge base!

I think he will score well and play most games, don't think he will tag, will play as an attacking midfielder possibly on a wing.

1. Saad
2. Kavagnagh - Yes i think he will, he is a very classy player and will add to the Bombers emerging mids. With McDonald i think he will play as a tagger but still score very well, though i can see Kavanagh averaging thereabouts, with his efficiency. Another thing with McDonald is if he starts dominating play he will get a tag.

3. Jackson Allen
4. Yes i do. I see Clarke playing as a more role style play for Collingwood, so a lockdown hard backmen, which allows Shaw and possibly O'Brien to use their running game.

No worries, i enjoy helping out with rookies etc.

I think he is a very good chance of getting games at GC  as a mature aged player. Has very flashy skills, his body is ready for AFL and he can fill a role as a small forward for GC. Taking this into account there could be some better forward rookies but I like him as a unique rookie in a team where they need maturity.

Redden is an interesting one as if the Power didn't pick up Renouf I would have said definitely. He should get games sometime throughout as he is highly touted by both the club and supporters as a youngster. I think 15 games may be pushing it, I believe Port will start with Lobbe and Renouf and at some stage rest Lobbe or if one loses form bring Redden in.

Hi There,

Zorko, Crozier, Tom Mitchell?

Thanks

Zorko - I believe he will play most games. Had a strong season for Broadbeach, as their Captain, winning quite a few awards including his fourth best and fairest. Many believe he will become a sensational player in the AFL now that he has his chance. Zorko reminds me a lot of Rockliff in the style he plays, he is a pacey midfielder who lives kicking goals.

Crozier - he has been hyped up far too much for my liking, all because of his outstanding mark in the U18 Champs. I am not saying he is a bad player but there are better midfielders. He plays more as a marking forward then a midfielder. He has a very good pair of hands and is a very good contested player, however at Fremantle I see him back in the pecking order and can't see Ross Lyon playing hI'm early this year if at all. It is worth pointing put that he kicked 8 goals on the champs with an average of 18.7 disposals at 67.4% efficiency, he was also very impressive with sprits, endurance and jumps at the draft combine.

Tom Mitchell - Class act. Reminds me of Pendlebury, has good endurance, great efficiency, sets up the play and gathers lots of possessions. He struggled with an injury during the U18 Champs this year and adding to that the fact he was always headed to Sydney as a F/S pick he was very underhyped. His highlight of his junior career was a 41 possession game for the AIS/AFL team.

Giles for me Tailsman.

Sam Rowe will play mainly as a KF which usually means lower scores then first rucks. He has a quality midfield delivering him the ball which could boost his scores a little more however.

Jon Giles will be the first ruck and has formed a very good combo with Clifton over the past 12 months. Giles has more than often been in the Giants best and should continue to do so.

I certainly do. I think he would have eitherway, but now he will play as a forward as with Patton playing I believe he would have been playing in the backline. It also in my opinion will give Haynes gametime as well.

Thanks mate.

Do you expect Chad Wingard to play a full season and score well or are there other options that will score better at the same price or cheaper?

And if you could pick 2 of the following who would you pick: D. Pfeiffer, A. Saad, S. Clifton, T. Milera, T. Adams and D. Smith
And if you had to choose 1 out of T. Walsh, A. Treloar, S. Kerridge and C. Hampton who would you take?

Also, how do you think Buntine will score in comparison to players like Docherty and Ellis?

Thanks heaps mate!

I think Wingard will play most games at Port Adelaide this year. Although he is a smaller bodied player, he is very versatile playing both as a forward and midfielder. His performance at the draft combine pushed him further up the draft order an allowed him to stay in his home state. There are a few options but he is one of the better ones, he should score pretty well next year.

Pfeiffer, Saad and Clifton.

Hampton.

I think Buntine may play a greater lockdown backman role than Ellis and Docherty. Ellis and Docherty will play as attacking back flankers with the amount of experience their teams have there but with GWS' lack of experience Buntine won't get that chance.

If i had to pick 1 it would probably be Ellis.

While Morris' maturity and hardness along with his SANFL form last year is appealing, he is more likely to play as a shutdown defender or a half back flanker who plays closer attention to his opponents. Ellis is a classic half back pacey runner who is possibly the best user of the ball in the draft, and thats always good for SC.

Personally i will be getting both.

Liked Panos ever since he was drafted. Personally i think he should have gone in the National Draft, very early possibly first round instead of the rookie one. He was talked up a lot prior to his drafting year but no-one touched him in the ND.

He will get early games in my opinion, he has a very accurate kick, so will rarely miss and he is also an exeptional mark.

I would like to....just a matter of how many Round 13 Bye players I can manage.

Morning MTTY

One of the most helpfull articles of the year,  sensational.

There a tons of midfield rookies to choose from this year.

When you look at GWS alone - Tyson Coniglio Shiel Miles Mcdonald Clifton Hampton  Hoskin Elliot Treloar

Those being the more popular picks so far. When you consider that GWS is going to play Ward Palmer Scully and the more experienced players, how many of these rookies do you genuinely feel will get enough game time to be ready to milk before the bye's come around?.
Do you think it will be ok to load up on a few extra GWS rookies with a plan to get rid of a few of them before round 11, or would the risk of them not playing enough games be too high?. If you think they will mature fast enough which one's are more likely to play most games prior to round 11.

Gday MTTY , good topic with equally good replies , picked up a couple of furthur names to look into .

Just wondering what your general thoughts are around Lee Spurr / Freo . Currently I'm leaning slightly toward the more
mature agers in most positions if possible .

Also any thoughts on Jed Lamb @ Syd would be much appreciated , he read pretty well pre 2011 , I certainly had him
short listed 12 months ago ,

Many Thanks MTTY .

And what do you think about marty clarke will he play most games

thank you in advance

Coconut Being a Lions supporter will answer the part for you on Docherty from the Lions Medical Room:

"Draftee Sam Docherty has just had hip surgery but is not expected to miss too much time."

This may be a reason for not including him in Teams from round 1 maybe a downgrade target.

Do not know much about these rookies with F/B DPP.

Which one would you select that will probably get games:
Jackson Ferguson (Saints); Jackson Paine, Trent Stubbs (Pies); Tom Curran (Roos); Jack Redpath (Dogs) Simon Turnbridge (Eagles). Just covering bases and need to select one to interchange with Smeldts.

Also anything on Sam Frost.

The Doggie are obviously in a bit of a rebuilding stage but are trying to limit the damage. I see Dickson and Campbell getting a lot of early game time but Redpath may not get as many games depending on how the Key youngsters go. Campbell is a smaller ruckman but could definatey play a role as both a forward and part time ruck. Dickson is a small forward who can spend sometime in the midfield and is a good unique mature aged rookie.

Well with Sheedy as coach i see a fairly big rotational policy of the youth, but if some of them show maturaity then they should stick around in the side.

Tyson - I see him getting a few early games but he may spend more time in the reserves developing that burst speed and to further develop his skills.

Coniglio - He is a very mature player and should feature mainly in the senior team as David Swallow did last year. Has the skills to set him in the GWS midfield for the year its just about convincing Sheedy of that.

Miles - He is a ball magnet and Sheedy could play him as one of the older youngsters through the midfield just to get GWS the ball at times. Can see him playing a lot of the opening 11 rounds.

McDonald - While a lot of people see him getting little game time this year i see the opposite. Sheedy has said he will give the youngsters time to develop, meaning that they will want to shield them with the older players for most of the year. So i can see him playing around 18-20 games.

Clifton - Forms a great combo with Giles and is a mature aged player. He has developed well at GWS and should play 18-20 games with the majority in the first half of the year.

Treloar and Hampton - They play similar roles as half forwards/midfielders and both should be given good amounts of oppurtunities in those roles. Hampton i see getting more games then Treloar as he has really impresses Sheedy and is one of his favourites.

Hoskin-Elliott - I don't see him playing a lot of games maybe 8-13, depending on if GWS want to utilise his speed on a wing or not. I think he will play the majority of his games in the second half of the year.

Lee Spurr is very much locked into the backline for me. He is a very talented mature aged player and if he hadn't of been picked by Fremantle i wouldn't have any hesitantion. We do not know what Ross Lyon will do with him or if he will even promote him yet, but if he does get promoted he should average very well for his price. Spurr played a key role in the SANFL this season for Centrals and almost gifted them a premiership with his inspired GF performance.

Jed Lamb is an interestign one, Sydney tend to go very light on playing rookies and i was surprised not to see him get a senior game this season for the Swans. Jed has a very accurate kick for his age which is very good for SC and could play a role that the Swans need in order to allow O'Keefe permenant midfield time. I can see Lamb playing this year at some point but with Sydney i am not entirely sure if  he is worth starting the year with.

Turnbridge for me is the most talented out of the lot of them but is also one of the ones least likely to get games seeing as he is at WCE. I think Paine could play at some point as he has been training very well but once again the Magpies team is very hard to crack. Tom Curran has a lot of potential but has good competition in the Roos line-up meaning he could be limited for oppurtunities.

Talia is a great young prospect and i was very shocked to see him slip as much as he did. With the Bulldogs in decline he could get a chance if the other young backs are not performing but remember Key Position players usually take time to find their feet at AFL level and in terms of Fantasy scoring.

Is at a club where he is very much needed as the Demons will look to add some experience and grunt into their team but i can not help but think he could play a similar role to Evans, meaning he features late in the year. Has solid skills to play as both a midfielder and as a half forward.

Hampton is a very very good young player. He is in the mould of Adam Goodes but is a smaller in height. Another play he is very much a like is Anthony Morabito and that is the role i see him playing at GWS, as a half forward and midfieder. Sheedy loves the kid and he has been trainging exceptionally well.

Miles is one of the more senior players to the new GWS kids, but only by a year. He played for NSW in the U18 Champs before GWS saw enough to pick up the ball magnet. Miles will be a better DTer than SCer in my opinion, as he just attracts the footy. Gathers a lot of possessions but will he fit into the GWS midfield for most of the year? Watch pre-season.

I rate both of them above Treloar. Hampton's ability to move around the ground is remarkable and is reminisant of Goodes, he is training and playing very well at GWS and for that Sheedy loves him expect him to feature frequently.

Cameron as you said is a KPP and it has been said that he very well could of gone at number 1 in the draft ahead of Patton if GWS hadnt of pre-listed him. He has great athleticism and hands and is very solid with his kicking. With Patton out early it makes him an even better option, always be wary though of how KPP's tend to score poorly in their first few years fantasy wise.

Great thread, well done.

1.  Do you expect Horsley and Pfeiffer to be elevated before round 1?  Any others?

2.  Are there any rookies you expect to be elevated later in the season?

3.  Do you think Morris AND Ellis will find space in Richmond's backline?  (Remember their early draw is tough)
Also, if only one were to get TOG which would you pick?
I think you mentioned in earlier pages Ellis would be picked ahead of Morris.  Dont you think Morris being a mature age player speaks in part of Richmond's intension to play him?

4.  Will you be selecting Coniglio? What do you guess he'll average?  70?

5.  If Tom Mitchell was not eligible as a FS pick, where do you think he would have come in the draft?

Shiel and Miles from GWS look very promising, Koby Stevens is established at WCE and looks impressive on the track, Tom Mitchell is a F/S pick for the Swans who would've gone into the top 10 draft, I would expect these guys to average 70+, and Coniglio to average 75+. Five extra points is not worth 70k! There are soooooo many options, and taking Coniglio is taking the easy way out... unless you think he will average 90+, which I doubt

Great thread MTTY.  You certainly know your rookies.

I agree with some of the thoughts that $191k for coniglio is a lot to pay.  He would want to average up near 100 to justify the extra cash.  There are not many top 10 draft picks that are must haves due to their hefty price.

In 2011, Swallow and heppel were good, but Libba and darling provided good numbers and plenty of games with a lower price.  (then there were the mature age rookies)

In 2010 martin was good at pick 3, but again a high price, with fyfe and bastinac performing just as well at lower prices, not to mention barlow and co..

In 2009, rich was the best of the top 10, but at pick 7 he wasn't as expensive as picks 1 and 2.  broughton and anthony were good older guys for base price.

Could there be a better value 18yo first year player than Joel Selwood at pick 7.  A once in a lifetime rookie and avoiding the premium rookie price of bryce gibbs, or the ones that followed.  gumby, hansen, berger, boak and thorpe.  enough said.

Unless theres another joel selwood in the top 10, I'm sticking to the cheaper ones and in particular, the mature age rookies, but keep up the good work MTTY.  Great work.

Thoughts on Josh Caddy???

I know he is $200K+but will he be a solid option as Stanley was in the back line last year?

Number 7 draft pick and Bombers chased him hard.  Surely in best 22 and will start on the ground

Mohr will definitely play, so that's good enough for me. Golds I haven't really heard of. Same with Darley BUT he has been highly touted in other fantasy footy forums, and is very finely pencilled in my bench. I'm looking around for some info at the moment...

And here's some from the GWS website:

Originally an outside player, Sam Darley has progressed into an impressive tough midfielder who won Tasmania's most valuable player award at the 2009 NAB AFL Under‐16 Championships, averaging 28 disposals, 10 handball receives, six marks and 17 uncontested possessions per match ‐ all ranked number one at the carnival.

In 2010 he played 11 matches at League level for North Hobart and was named in the best players six times.

At the 2010 NAB AFL Under‐18 Championships he played all five matches with his performances all elite. He averaged 25 disposals, 12 handball‐receives, 18 uncontested possessions, four rebound and four inside 50s per match. He was subsequently awarded the Hunter Harrison Medal for the best player in division two and was also named in the 2010 NAB AFL U18 All Australian team.

So there are a lot of impressive figures in there... he's on my bench!

the way i see it is mohr will play more but wont score as high as darley so which is the better way to go, someone who scores less but plays more or the player that may miss a couple of games? i think the player who scores higher since in the end his price will be higher. thoughts?

it is a tricky one. Ideally they would both play the first 10 rounds and then we would upgrade them both, but Sheeds doesn't read this (as far as I know), so slight chance of that happening! From what I read, I would stick with Darley. There is less risk with Mohr, but if Darley plays according to his previous awards and pre-AFL stats, then he should maintain a spot in the side...

But is you want less risk, go Mohr, and good luck to you! But I'm going Darley... I think  :-\

Some thoughts rambling through my head:
If Darley is on and off the field between rounds 1-10 (Rnd 11 is his bye) then he won't be as good a cash cow as a Mohr who plays all of Rnds 1-10. This is unless his average magically improves between say, Rnd 7-end of season...

Basically what I should've said was check NAB Cup and if Darley is named Rnd 1  ::)

He'll get games for sure, but will also be rested at times. When he plays he should score well because he is a great impressive kick.

Hey mate, do you think Wil Sierakowski will get a run at North in 2012? Do you believe he fits in their best 22? Thanks.
