Post here your routine before a footy match or soccer or anything.
Here is mine for a 3:00 game
9:30 - Wake Up, Shower, Breakfast (yes an actual shower, no not the other version)
10:00 - Watch AFL Gameday to get me in a footy mood
11:00 - Watch the Sunday Footy Show, to stay in footy mood.
1:00 - Start listening to my pump up music to get motivated.
2:00 - Continue listening to music and getting to
2:55 - Watch this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR2Vu398p_E
post here your routines.
for a 12:00 round of golf
9:00 get up, shower, breakfast
11:15 head off to the golf course
11:30 warm up, practice putt etc.
12:00 bomb a drive down the middle and play :P
my routine fr a 1:00 pm tennis match.
12:00 get up
12:00- 12:25 checks out the DT scores for Saturday morning on fan footy while eating my breakfast
12;25-12:30 quick shower and put my tennis clothes on
12:50 arrive at the club put on sun screen
1:00 start my game
I always seem to start slowly and lose my first set most games, than come back and win the second set. I cant seem to work out why that happens.
The only routine I have before a game is to listen to a certain song (with headphones on) to pump me up.
That song is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYMdXqtnaI8
It might seem like an odd song choice, but the raw energy the song gives off really gets me psyched.
wake up as late as possible, less time = less time to think about things keeps my head clear...
on the way to the oval a couple of songs to harness energy from and then dial it back with Bob Marley Soul Rebel right before heading in...
say gday to the team and then i dont talk much, shorts first right sock right boot left sock left boot then jumper everytime...
wake up in the morning, go and have a nice long shower, then go and take an actual shower with water.
then go to the field, take a shower (in the bush, there's no toilet facilities)
then go take a shower on the opposing team.
But then I busted my knee- took too many shower :(
;D i wasnt going to mention that but yeah around 4 times in the last 30 minutes before a game :-X
I pull my socks up halfway, so they cover half of my calves. Thats my ritual :P
My ritual for when I'm playing cricket (opening ::)) is actually to bowl 2 overs.
Mostly to try and replicate training, helps ease the pressure :) First time I did it I knocked out my PB ;)

cricket is very mental, so i can understand that.
I get so much more nervous before playing cricket than footy. ::)

Indeed it is.
The Don was quoted saying ' If I made a mistake I felt that nine times out of ten it was a physical mistake. I had tried to do something and did't get there in time, I was too slow or something like that. I am sure with a lot of players their mental attitude is terribly important, they imagine that there are difficulties that are not really there'
Tells me that Bradman felt his success was largely put down to his mental strength and that it is the downfall of many others. I read that before every innings as well :)
yeh so true.
Im a terrible batter now. I belive I have the ability, but just cant concentrate long enough to build an innings. ::)
Now im hopeless.
I'm the opposite...Tend to start it off nice and slow, takes me an eternity to bring up the first 10-20 but if you let me get past 30 or 40 I'll generally go at a boundary an over until I retire :P
link has been updated, was on my ipod when i posted it, now you can watch it.
'And if you wanna tell the world that your father has raised a son that's a little bit timid...Go and play tennis' LOL.

yeah that gets me moving.
My ritual is simple. Wake up 3 hours before the game. Have a shower, shower and shave. I also then have a steak sandwich. Doesn't matter if I am playing in the 3rds and the match starts at 9am... Will get up at 6 and have that steak sandwich. I then get an ice Gel rub down by the missus of my legs and back. Then I go for a quick jog around the block a couple times and do a few suicides in the drive way.
Grab the basketball and dribble it a bit. Then grab the footy and practice some pick ups off the ground, some scoops. Do a couple sprints then go back inside, have a Gatorade orange (All I drink on game day until after its done then its Carlton Draught) and take another shower.
Relax until we leave knowing I have energy from the protein in the steak sandwich which is just starting to pump it out. On arrival at the ground I get ready and then go have a kick with the boys. 15 minutes before the start I take a couple no doz. Good stuff that. :P
Then have a smoke.
Then go get raped by 150points+

plus about 80 more from that video.
Just because I smoke doesn't mean I can't be fit. :P I have a smoke 15 minutes before the game, at half time and then continue as normal after it. :P
That video is really inspirational CM. Great coaches. Legends

I already have quite a few pinned to the back wall...But the only one from a person involved with the AFL/VFL is this one from Yabbie -
'Footballers are like sausages... You can fry them, grill them, bake them... they're still sausages'

that's a bit hard on tennis, i have played AFL, Soccer, Basketball and Baseball and Tennis is just as hard if not harder than most of them. Playing a 3 hour match is both physically and mentally demanding ( abit like batting in cricket for that time).

3 hours at the crease isn't that long :x

I had the same attitude when I smoked (admittedly I only quit in Feb this year). It is only now that I am noticing the difference in fitness.

Not saying it any tougher than cricket but 3 hours batting time where you only have yourself not a partner. Not trying to insult any sport as at decent level every sport is tough. I cop alot from my basketball friends about tennis being weak. But there are not many sports where you have to play for hours by yourself and have to close of a score. Where you have to win that last point to end the game.
lol mine is dodgy for a 1pm game of footy on saturday (for home game)
wake up at 730-shower,breakfast,get stuff ready
845 short walk to someone elses house
9 leave for game
930 arrive at oval
10 watch under 12s play(maybe help out in a few areas like scoring)
1130 watch bit of under 14s
1215 go into the change rooms to get ready and pumped
1245 start jogging and warming up
Whatever I do, I MUST go to the toilet before i play sport and I MUST stretch as well :)
I also get hungry so i eat before or bring food. And water to stay hydrated.
I'm not sure I have a special routine but I do have a pair of small footy shorts with the eagle mascot on. I always wear them under my skins for footy, soccer and tennis.
Well Tom Hafey actually came to our club tonight, and he showed us that video, he asks: How many of you use this to prepare for a match? I only put my hand up, How many from now will use it for preperations? about 8 people put their hand up :)
Don't really have a special routine before a footy match, for school footy on Saturday the bus leaves as early as 7:00 sometimes so I wake up at 6:55 and throw my footy gear on as I run out the door :P
For club on Sunday, I usually wake up at about 8:00, go have some breakfast (usually Weet-Bix but if we have Nutri Grain then I get stuck into that ;)) and then mope around for a couple hours, usually go on FF for a while and check my SC match-ups, and count how many players I have playing in each Sunday game. Then lay my North Melbourne gear out on my bed if they are playing in the twilight game so I can come home and get changed into it and go straight away. Then I usually get changed into my footy gear and walk around the house with my footy for a while before we leave.
When I get to the ground I usually have a kick with mates and do some fun kicks, eg setting up a garbage bin behind the cricket nets and kicking it over the nets and into the bin or stuff like that.
For cricket, I usually bat number 3 and sometimes 4 (for school) so I normally put pads, box and maybe thigh pad on when our innings is about to start, get some throwdowns and then put my gloves and helmet on as I walk out to bat. Keeps me relaxed. In a way :P
Very interesting, looking to play cricket for a club, been wanting to for ages but I'm lazy ;)
Can imagine I'll be a nervous wreck waiting to bat, if my past experiences with sport is anything to go by.
When I played soccer, I woke up, whinged about being tired, got to the ground and prepared, never was one for routines.
I bat four for cricket everyweek so I only get half set (leave off my gloves/thighpad/helmet) and once the first wicket falls I get really set with throwdowns and the such.
Do it BB it's great stuff.
Yeah just need to find a club that plays Sunday's and trains mondays or Tuesday's as I have other commitments Wednesday Friday and saturday, and Thursday is my do sfa day.
when i play indoor i don't need a helmet or protector just batting gloves and my bat :P

I never wore a thighpad when I played cricket. I just found it too uncomfortable and restricting. I opened the batting and figured I was good enough not to get hit there, and only ever got hit there once. Didn't really hurt either so just confirmed my way of not wearing one :)
im very interested to see if people stretch before or after a game or both. When i wake up on time i like to go for a 5-10 minute jog before a game and do minimal stretching than i strecth after the game. I was told that stretching afterwords was more important than before. Both my AFL and my Soccer teams we stretched before the game and than did nothing afterwards. I always go for a jog after my game and i recommend it to everyone, the worst injury i have ever got is a corking and i have never got a cramp in a game so whatever im doing is working.
I stretched pre game, and used to do some stretching post-game as well.
When I was playing I had I think a sprained ankle once, and then ripped my knee cartlidge- not that stretching could have prevented that :P
Haha see the injury thread for my injuries ;)

Yeah I wear it for rep cricket and stuff like that because everyone is doing it and the bowlers are kinda faster :P
But for school/club I usually don't wear it. Especially on hot days!
