Title: Giants Cup Week 1 discussion thread
Post by: BratPack on February 13, 2011, 01:07:47 PM
It's Day 1 of the Giants Cup for a lot of FFer's today on FTP. With a crumbling pitch on offer in India Spin is the thing to win. But will the FFer's? Let me share my thoughts

Roo Boys!  v Kerala Warriors
It's closer than most would think. R&B seems to have the advantage though. Spin is a strength for him.
FF Win?: Yes

The Brat Pack  v Super Tigers 11
About a week ago I would've said no chance. But he has sold players since then. His guys are more experiencd definitely and he still should win. But he's not the lay down misere he was. If Roberts can fire....
FF Win?: Unlikely. But not impossible

Hammertown Warriors  v John Howard's Coathangers
ML is in the same boat as me really. He's not favored nor is he totally out of it. Lack of a quality spinner to back up Ridge may tip the scales against him
FF Win?: Unlikely

Linkin Park v bombersXI
Already has been played
FF Win?: Uhhhhh.....No

Tickle My Timber v Rebel Spinners
This game is brought to by "No Country for Old Men" and is a knifeedge game. Probably the hardest one to predict. In the end Shaggy's spinners may just push him over the line. But When you rate with in 1.2k of each other. Who knows?
FF Win?: Coin Flip. I'd say yes though.

Now for the FF wars

Hillly's Heroics v Hello
Hilly's getting there. Spin is one of his major plus for his team. Problem is HP's spinners are just as good if not better. But if Hilly can get away to a start (His Top Order just shades HP's). He's a huge show.
Winner: Hello should get the duke. But it won't be easy

DazBurg's Greatness v Frankston XI
The man who's never lost a FF battle against FF's Self Appointed Giant Killer. Daz has made some improvements though and in fact his top order if put together right probably just shades GS's. But Spin is the thing to win. As talented as Anderson is. GS has got the spinners and Daz hasn't
Winners: Frankston XI. But Daz DOES have the knack of pulling an upset when you least expect it.

Golden C v Gunz n Rosez
One that a lot of people on FF will be watching with intrest I'm sure. Both teams have strengths and weaknesses. It's should be closer than the 7k or so rating gap suggests
Winner: Gunz n Rosez. But a crumbling pitch against Barlow's spinners IS probably where BOOMZ is most vulnerable...

Fletch's No Balls v The Matchbox Matadors
Both teams have steadily improved. Both teams should be up for this. Could come down to which spin group performs and which doesn't
Winner Or Who bats first. I'd lean towards Fletch. But it's tight.

Linkin Park v bombersXI
Already has been played
FF Win?: Uhhhhh.....No
to be fair he outrated me by 10k :)

End of over 23 (4 runs) - The Matchbox Matadors(104-3) RR 4.52
G. Warwick 7 (16b) , P. Henderson 28 (53b) , D. Boag 2-0-6-0

Nice write up there BP. Surprised I have only lost 3 wickets to be honest

Actually, just want to correct you on one thing BP. 75% chance whoever bowls first on Crumblers/Dry will win. Chasing is easier on spin pitches for some reason.

But very nice write up.

Nice write up BP :)

Kerala Warriors and I rate pretty much EXACTLY the same in friendlies, and with Cloudy and Crumbling it is certainly going to be decided by the bowlers. I am going in with 3 seamers and 2 spinners, 2 seamers with Outs summaries and 2 spinners with Outs summaries, and then Stevenson with an Exp summary, but I think he could really rip through a line-up if he gets lucky.

I have discussed tactics with my captain, and I am set for a big one :)

If Jaseam can hang around with Furlonge/Makinson then I am in for a bit of luck. Furlonge and Makinson both have Spec summaries so they should be something to base my innings around.

Shaggy, I thought that too but my captain said to bat first.

Well shaggy I'm hoping to be part of the 25% of people who win batting first ;)
Hopefully my 2 outstanding spinners can do something on the hot crumbling pitch :)

It's an advantage to bowl first but I don't think it's that big...

Not saying it doesn't happen at all but its more likely to happen as I said.

Who is your captain R&B?

Oh crap. GS filled his only exploitable weakness in his spin department... No Wrist Spinner.

And he filled it extremely well too with a spec summary o.O!

8.6   W   Rudraraju to Ramsamooj : [runout] Wait is the call, Daley misfields and the batters take off. Ramsamooj is well short of his ground and is run out. The lesson here ladies and gents, is never run on a misfield.
S. Ramsamooj run out (K. Daley) 15 (32b 0x4 0x6) SR:46.88

1/28 off 9.4 now :)

J. O'Sullivan 21 (35b) , D. Campbell 16 (25b) , P. Kortlang 5-1-22-0

A tidy first 10 overs, despite a missed run out attempt in the first over. Was expensive early on but they tightened up and closed well. Now on comes the spinners.

41.2   W   Dhanraj to Manou : [catch] That's very full from Dhanraj, it's just about waist height and Manou has absolutely creamed that down to deep extra cover where he picks out Callaway. The umpires are checking with each other here, there seems to be some confusion, and it seems it is NOT a no ball. Manou is on his way, and he is fuming with that decision.

thats gonna hurt should be a quick collapse from here for me

edit:
42.3   W   Dickson to Anderson : Looping flight from Dickson, but Anderson reads it early, dances down the track to get to the pitch. His attempt to slam it straight back over the bowler's head only results in a simple catch for long on.

46.5   4   Ali to Living : Ali bounces him, but down leg, and Living confidently hooks that down to fine leg for four. That's a great cricketing shot

Your batting is much stronger than mine Hilly. But this is all due to the majority of my players being in the 22-25 category with great fielding behind them :D.

Need to hope Bowling can topple you guys ;D.

In trouble RB but could make a comeback if lucky :-\.

43.3   1   Thomson to Ali : [dropped] A big nick from an attempted off drive. Sira jumped for it, but it bounced out of his hand. A tough chance, but a missed opportunity nonetheless. The batsmen run a single.

That would have been the game....

Lucky though as it gets Naved back on strike.

46.1   4   Garner to Naved : Full length, looking for some swing, but it's overpitched and Naved leans into a graceful cover drive that bisects the infield and races away for four.

Gets a single next ball, Ali better just get a single here..

Yes! Single to ALi, and then:
46.4   4   Garner to Naved : [misfield] An extra fielding session wouldn't go astray for Jabir next week. 4 added to the score.

35.3   1   Konings to Thiagarajan : Thiagarajan turns down the appeal from Ngilu for an easy second run. The licensed section of the crowd start a chant, "He's big, He's round, He weighs 300 pounds. Thiagarajan, Thiagarajan". Might be a hint of truth to that.

Giants Cup Round Up. Brought to you by

For Annoying Weeds...Both literal and people who outbid you on the FTP Transfer Market

Kerala Warriors v Roo Boys!
Roo Boys! won the toss and elected to field under cloudy skies and put in a spirited bowling performance to restrict Kerala to 6/216 off their 50 overs. Byron Busbridge top scored with 68, ably supported by Gramakuta Sira with 41. A good spell of bowling from Captain Rana Naved who took 3/44 resricting the Warriors.
The run chase started well as both Kumara Jaseam and Renelle Furlonge helped themselves to half centuries but a middle order collapse in which Roo Boys! lost 6/50 left them on the brink at 7/162. Enter Naved again, ably supported by Rehmat Ali he belted 46 off just 39 balls to lead his side to the brink of victory. Ali and van den Hof knocked off the remaining runs as Roo Boys! escaped with a 2 wicket win with 13 balls to spare

The Brat Pack v Super Tigers 11
The Brat Pack faced a daunting task as they went on the road to take on the highly fancied Super Tigers 11. Captain Shane Gorman had no hesitation in batting first and openers Selwyn Bartrim and Samuel Ryan got the Pack off to a solid start, putting on an 81 run opening stand but when Bartrim was stumped on 41 the rot set in. The Brat Pack lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 208 in the 48th over. Super Tigers were let down by an embarrassing 33 extras but were ably led in their attack by Elaine Anderton who took 3/35 off 9 overs.
The run chase was never really in doubt as opener Frederick Jones controlled the tempo on his way to an innings high of 88, only a stutter towards the end caused by three quick Freedom Mabothe wickets gave the home side any cause for concern and they duly wrapped up a five wicket win with 10 overs to spare.

Hammertown Warriors v John Howard's Coathangers
The Coathangers fielded first after Hammertown won the toss and couldn't capitalize on a good early start that had Hammertown struggling at 2/37. Keeper-Batsmen Derrick Potter carried a good bulk of the innings on his back as he hit 75, although he was well supported by Phil Noble's 48 as Hammertown went on to post a competitive 6/235 off their 50 overs. Hunter Deware was the only bowler to really get anything going for the Coathangers as he took 4/49 off his 10 overs.
The Coathangers were never in the hunt after Steve Goffet had them slumping to 3/28 in the 7th over. Cameron Greene and Lewis Rahmann tried to right the ship but when Goffet returned to remove Greene it was only a matter of time. The Coathangers lost their last 7 wickets for just 51 as they crashed to be all out for just 131 in the 38th over. Goffet finishing with figures of 6/33 as Hammertown lowered the boom on the Coathangers by 104 runs

Frankston XI v DazBurg's Greatness
A eager crowd turned up to Bayside Cricket Ground as Frankston hosted the Greatness. Frankston, undefeated against all FF challengers were in the field as Greatness Captain Jamshed Vidur elected to bat first, a decision that appeared to have backfired when their star Frank Crook fell cheaply to leave them 3/39 after 10 overs. A fightback from Vidur and Tony Bryant added some respectably, Vidur made 35 and Bryant 40 and a Demessie Saitoti cameo of 27 was also memorable, however a late order collapse where the Greatness lost their last 5 wickets for just 4 runs saw them bowled out for just 161, a total that didn't seem like it would be enough.
The Greatness bowlers were tight but luckless early as Shaggy Mushangazike controlled the pace of the Frankston run chase but when he fell LBW to Darren Rahmann for 26 Frankston lost their way. Edmund Taufel came back to take key wickets to leave Frankston on the ropes 6/86 before Eric Anderson was introduced into the attack at just the right moment to clean up the tail as Frankston were bowled out for 132 in the 40th over. Taufel finished with figures of 3/30 and was a deserving man of the match as "Fan Footy's Self Appointed Giant Killers" took another scalp for their growing collection.

Rebel Spinners v Tickle My Timber
Tickle My Timber won the toss and elected to field, a decision that seemed to be the wrong one as Spinners openers James O'Sullivan and David Campbell kept the TMT bowlers at bay as well as keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Both made half centuries, O'Sullivan top scored with 80 and Campbell helped himself to 59 as the two put on an opening stand of 143. The Fall of Campbell's wicket however changed the game as the Spinners collapsed in a heap, losing 10/64 tp be bowled out for 207 in the 46th over. Phillip Lidgerwood was the chief destroyer, taking 5/40 off 8 overs.
The TMT run chase started fairly enough but they would soon find themselves in huge trouble at 5/65. Captain Jack Hogan set about a one man rescue mission as he hit 67 but in the end he was left with too much responsibily as noone seemed willing to make runs with him. When he fell the TMT hopes ended and they were bowled out for 194 in the 44th over. Wickets were spread but it was Jack Kavanagh who posted the best figures of 4/36 as well as taking the vital scalp of Hogan to lead the Spinners to victory.

Golden C v Gunz n Rozez
Golden C won the toss and elected to bat and that soon proved to be a disastrous move. Golden C lost wickets at regular intervals as no batsmen seemed to want to take advantage of their good starts as they slumped to be bowled for just 143 in the 45th over. Krishnamurthy Rudraraju led a great all round bowling performance for Gunz n Rozez, posting figures of 3/26 off 8 overs.
Any hopes Golden C had of a fightback were soon dashed as Sanjay Manohari and Eric Lucas put on 103 for the second wicket. Lucas eventually fell for 41, Manohari continued all the way through to finish 68* as Gunz and Rozez cruised to an 8 wicket win with just under 14 overs to spare.

The Matchbox Matadors v Fletch's No Balls
The Matadors won the toss and elected to bat and while no one batsmen went on to post a huge innings for them. Enough Matadors got a start to enable them to post a very competitive total. The Matadors were eventually bowled out in the final over for 227, their top score of 33 shared by Robert Deem and Atul Suriyaprakash a testament to just how many Matadors got starts, Samuel Breman was the pick of the bowlers, posting figures of 3/40
After a shaky start the No Balls looked well in control as Anton Rethans and Peter Nye both fought to half centuries, Rethans with 87, Nye with 52. However the Matadors did well to hold them to close to the run rate and you always sensed that one breakthough would change things and when Nye fell panic set in to the No Balls side, triggering a collapse that would see them lost their final 8 wickets for 54 runs as they were bowled out for 205 in 48th over. Wilhelm Orange did the bulk of the damage, picking up 4/38 as the Matadors soon performed the tercio de muerte to run out 22 run winners.

Great write up ;)

Love the write ups BP!!! :D. Now I need some of that round-up me thinks :P.

C. Jeffers 0 (1b) , R. Carney 11 (11b) , H. Salah 5-0-26-2

The second of my openers just got out. Looks close but Batting not a strong point for me.

Nice write up BP ;)

Must have taken some time...

Disappointed with my result considering I dominated the ratings.... I need an AR to help down the order with my batting.

You weren't finished at the time Hilly :p but just for you

Hillly's Heroics v Hello
The Heroics were sent in and began well with a 101 opening stand between Shaggy Ngilu and Quintin Bruce. Bruce was eventually dismissed for 37 while Ngilu continued to punish the Hello attack, finding an willing partner in Avindhya Thiagarajan along the way. Ngilu eventually fell for 92 and will kick himself for a loose shot with a century looming. From there wickets fell regularly and only some late over hitting from Thiagarajan, who would eventually fall for 51 got the Heroics up to a very competitive total of 230. Karmarkar Sreedhar doing the bulk of the damage with 5/44.
Hello's run chase was in trouble early and too much was left to Robert Carney to try and save Hello from defeat, Carney's innings of 90 was mastery at its finest but unlike the Heroics he had no support with only Collie Jeffers providing token resistance to the Heroics attack. When Carney's innings finally came to an end with the score on 185 it was only a matter of time for the Heroics and they duly wrapped things a short time later, bowling Hello out for 198. Hamza Salah was dangerous with his spell of fast bowling and ripped the heart out of the Hello top order on route to figures of 5/42, making him a deserving man of the match.

Nice write up BP. Makes it very entertaining :)

Also fletch I wouldn't say 5k is dominating the ratings ;) I did out rate you in the spinning department and the batting tail, which helped me to a respectable score. Good game though. Hopefully I can win next week in the GC too :)

CF, I meant dominating in the sense that your spinners only took 1 wicket between them, and yet your Seam bowlers took the rest, and yet were beaten easily by mine, plus my batsmen who hung around for ages, but didn't score >:( outrated you too...

I aslo did a fielding check today for both of us, I excluded catches though. You were up 14-12, I was down 8-13, yet we were basically even with fielding.

I just can't explain the ME sometimes, that was all. The better team won on the day ;)

Yeah fair enough fletch, got no clue what my spinners were doing since I did set them on aggressive for one spell each yet they were easily my worst bowlers.

Hmm the ME does seem a little random at times, but I must be doing something right with my tactics because the last 3 friendlies I have played I have been out rated yet won all three. That also includes my qualifier for the world cup :)

I reckon 9 times out of 10 with the same tactics by both teams you would win and I just got lucky :)

Sometimes ratings mean absolutely nothing. Tactics play a very important role. I was probably too aggressive with my spinners, thus Kimber let in too many runs, etc.
