Title: Junktimer's take: DEF: Mid pricers and Cheapies
Post by: Junktimer on December 04, 2010, 01:18:27 AM
Hello all, I'm gonna give my thoughts on what defence's mid pricers and cheapies amongst supercoaches should look this year.
PLEASE NOTE: All prices are based on m0nty's fanplanner.

OVERVIEW

This year in defence there are a few mid pricers at a tasty price, with a few cheapie targets such as Andy Otten.  Popular mid pricers include Shannon Hurn, Josh Drummond and Jed Adcock.

STRUCTURE
This year in the backs I will probably go with a modest 3/1/2/4.  The reason I am likely to be going this is because in doing so I can save money to bolster other lines which don't have the cheap options the defence possesses.  However, there is a definitely a case for going for premium heavy in the backs.

MID PRICERS

My definition of a mid pricer is not by average, as many have discounts.  I believe a mid pricer is a player who is in the 250k-450k bracket.  You always have to be careful with mid pricers, and they are definitely not something i would have too many of in a team.  Many mid pricers burned coaches this year, and they have to be treated with caution, however if used correctly, they can be a revelation for coaches because they are effectively a cheap premium.

Jack Grimes-
$445,000
Grimes was impressive straight away from his debut, he was consistent in his scores, and did not suffer the second year blues too much last year, averaging 88.  Injuries can be a concern for this young lad however, as he only has played 25 games in two years, and his hamstring has been a little bit of a problem.  Wouldn't rule him out just yet.

Jarrad Waite- $444,000
Waite in my opinion is a very good option for 2011.  He is not too expensive, and has good scoring potential.  Suspensions were an issue last year, but I'd much prefer suspension worries than injury issues.  Waite has never really had much injury issues, apart from his ACL tear in 09.  Also possesses a relatively unique MPP (F/B) capability.

Brad Symes- $438,100
Symes is one of many mid price options that the Crows boast.  Symes is often up and down with his scores, but he still managed to average 87 this year.  Symes is often regarded as more of a DT option, but could still prove good value for supercoaches this year.  If he can get his troublesome body right, he will be on many shortlists this year amongst supercoaches.

Shannon Hurn- $427,800
Shannon Hurn is very popular amongst fanplanners this year.  I can understand everyone's infatuation with him, due to his effectiveness and his choice to kick over a handball, his k:hb ratio was a ridiculous 6.5:1 this year!  At times can pull out a stinker, but is underpriced and a very good option for teams this year.

Nathan Bock- $420,500
Bockchoi has been a good solid scorer over the last few years.  His average of 83 was a bit down on his 09 average of 100, but it was interrupted through injury and poor form.  Form is temporary, class is permanent however, and I'm sure Bock will slot in nicely into Gold Coast's already strong defence.  You could do worse, short list.

Josh Drummond- $416,800
http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=2986 (http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=2986)
This game sums up Josh Drummond's potential.  30 possessions for 227 SC, unheard of, unspeakable.  Drummond has proven that he is one of the most natural supercoach players going round, his effectiveness is to die for.  However, in recent years, his two knee reconstructions and quad problems have proven him to be very injury prone.  The most games Drummond has ever played in a season is 19.  This stat is worrying for coaches, but if he's fit, he'll be firing.

Andrew Carrazzo- $396,300
Carrazzo, when zoning off his man, is dynamite for fantasy.  Whilst he doesn't have a great kick, and makes a few clangers, which is terribe for SC, he can find the pill.  A scary sight for coaches was when Carrazzo was playing a tagging role late in the year, it was taking its toll, shown by him scoring 11 in round 22 with no injury.  He does have an upside, but only 3 tons for the year is worrying, unlikely at this stage.
Michael Hurley- $351,100
Michael Hurley has been hailed as the second coming by Bomber fans, but in his first years, he hasn't lived up to those impeccable claims.  Now I'm not taking a shot at the Viewbank College lad, because I know that KPPs take time, and the time could be ripe for young Michael.  He has shown shades of a good supercoach player, taking contested marks and kicking goals.  I guess it's up to coaches as to whether or not they think he will improve on his performances from last year.

Jed Adcock- $311,500
Jed Adcock is very cheap for somebody of his calibre.  His average of 69 last year was not indicative of the sort of player he is, he was under done and injured.  He showed us what he was made of when he averaged 110 in 2007.  Adcock is similar to Drummond in the way he plays, and could be a great pick up for coaches next year, provided his body holds up, which is not a certainty.

CHEAPIES
A cheapie is basically somebody who is below 250k, who isn't a rookie.  The fanplanner doesn't differentiate between rookies and cheapies and as such David Swallow is listed as a cheapie.  Cheapies are useful due to their tiny price and there potential money making ability.

Andy Otten- $230,700
Andy Otten is a must have for coaches next year.  His solid 09 as a 19 year old showed what sort of player he will turn out to be.  He looks to become a possible Nathan Bock replacement.  At just 230k, even if he was just to repeat his 76 average he will still make you a lot of money.

Nice list so far JT. Again, a very fine write up 8).

I've got to say, Drummond and Hurn look very very tempting at those prices. Might slip them and Otten into my structure. A coach would crazy not to take a risk on at least 1 of them!! They are just natural SC players.

More great stuff :)

I just have a feeling Otten will burn coaches this year.

I lean the other way, Ossie.  I think the kid is due for a change of luck and I'd most certainly risk him before Drummond whose medical records are just too scary to contemplate.

Drummond has a higher scoring potential than Adcock.

cool, thanks JT.

looks like 2 leaning towards Drummond and 1 for Adcock so far.
i'm leaning towards Adcock on a cost constraint point of view so maybe 2 all atm??  ;)

Drummond averages about 12 games a year - make your choice from that.

I would choose Drummond Hands down if you go off what they can do when fit. However, Drummond can't stay on the field for long enough but if he can, worth every cent.

I will be picking him this year barring a pre-season injury. He just has too much scoring potential to ignore. Him and Hurn are made for SC.

Wow! :o
Thats very little games per year. Drummond is extremely injury prone. >:(

Its all about the pre season for Drummond. If he is in cotton wool for the NAB Cup be wary, he is a classic SC temptation. So much upside yet so likely to be downside. The disciplined decision is to say no.... but it's just so hard.

Couldn't agree more Cruise. I have picked him every year, but have got stung by him, but he wins me games... and of course loses me some too :(

Let's hope he can stay away from injuries this year. We know the ball will be in Brisbane's defence most of the year :D

The Backline is very interesting for next year with a lot of tempting Mid Pricers / low end premiums to consider.    I think I'll be running in direct contrast to you Junktimer with a premium / potenital premium heavy backline (Probably Goddard, Gibbs, Delidio, Waite and two of Gilbert, Hurn, Drummond and Duffield) with the seventh spot filled by a rookie (No room for Ottens who I don't think will be the most effective Cash Cow anyway).

While I'm thinking of it, is there any reason there is no writeup of Nathan Bock?

Ta.   Definitely worth considering.  Played last year like he was distracted. I get the feeling he signed with GC Suns early.  A change of scene should do wonders for Bock.

Your summary of him is spot on. Will only be taking either 1 or 2 of these guys. Oh, and Otten probably.

Congrats on the coach status Junk. ;D

If something does happen to them I hope it's before supercoach opens so I don't get sucked into putting them in my team. ;D
