Stars may travel from country to country, but they all come out to play in our annual blockbuster
Representative Round, AFL Round 13 scores from Adelaide, Carlton, Gold Coast, GWS, North Melbourne, Richmond + AFL Round 14
Home Team | Away Team | Venue | Head-to-Head |
AAP Alliance | EurAsia | Melbourne Cricket Ground | 3 v 4 |
The EurAsia v AAP Alliance match takes place during the latter two AFL bye rounds and provides us some sort of entertainment in what is otherwise our WXV bye week. The coaches of these two sides are decided by who is on top of the WXV Ladder so far in the year, which this time around, is second-time around
New Delhi (EurAsia) and the back-to-back
Toronto (AAP Alliance)! As seen below:
| EurAsia | | AAP Alliance |
2 | New Delhi Tigers | 1 | Toronto Wolves |
5 | Beijing Thunder | 3 | Cairo Sands |
6 | Berlin Brewers | 4 | Rio de Janeiro Jaguars |
7 | Moscow Spetsnaz | 8 | Cape Town Cobras |
10 | Seoul Magpies | 9 | Pacific Islanders |
13 | Tokyo Samurai | 11 | Buenos Aires Armadillos |
14 | London Royals | 12 | New York Revolution |
15 | Dublin Destroyers | 17 | Mexico City Suns |
16 | PNL Reindeers | 18 | Christchurch Saints |
As mentioned, Ricophants have indeed coaches EurAsia before - and to victory - in the close tussle of 2017. However, in his debut season in Worlds, FTC sees himself coaching the AAP Alliance! He has coached a masterclass so far this year to be deservedly #1 on the ladder. Can his fresh and innovative approach break this 3-game losing streak from the Alliance?
Hosted at the magnificent MCG, our annual blockbuster really does have some rich history now, with plenty of amazing clashes along the years. But, in my opinion, the 2015 clash will be very tough to beat:
2018 (Purple77): EurAsia (28.11.179) def AAP Alliance (26.10.166)
2017 (Ricochet/elephants): AAP Alliance (25.8.158) lost to EurAsia (26.7.163)
2016 (Holz): EurAsia (27.11.173) def AAP Alliance (23.11.149)
2015 (JROO8): AAP Alliance (26.12.168*) def EurAsia (26.11.167)
2014 (Nails): EurAsia (24.11.155) lost to AAP Alliance (25.18.168)
2013 (Ringo): AAP Alliance (25.22.172) lost to EurAsia (27.21.183)
2012 (CrowsFan): AAP Alliance (28.8.176) def EurAsia (27.11.173)

DefenceEurAsia have the highest 5 averaging defenders so far this season, largely thanks to New Delhi who boasts all of Jake Lloyd (#1), Shannon Hurn (#2) and Bachar Houli (#4). The Alliance round out the next 4, each from a different team headed by Cairo's own Tom Stewart. EurAsia then have the 10th to 14th best, so it's clear EurAsia - on paper - have the best defence between the two sides.
MidfieldThe Alliance have last week's superstar in Patrick Cripps (Rio de Janeiro, #2 highest mid) as its #1 player and prime captaincy candidate. However, EurAsia have Lachie Neale (Beijing, #1 mid), Josh Kelly (Seoul, #3 mid) and Nat Fyfe (Berlin, #4 mid) all on or above the Cripps benchmark, perhaps indicating a dominance here as well. Depth wise, the Alliance have the mids covered, boasting 9 of the top 13 mids. However, these clashes are always decided by the players with big ceilings, and that EurAsian trio can go VERY big.
RuckOnce again, EurAsia DOMINATE the ruck stocks, headed by star duo Max Gawn (#1 ruck, #1 EurAsia, #1 in competition) and Brodie Grundy (scrub). Goldstein (Dublin) and McEvoy (Seoul) are a very distant 3rd and 4th, with the Alliances highest averager so far this season sitting 5th in Pacific's Jarrod Witts. There is no way the Alliance get on top of the ruck division here.
ForwardsThis is where the Alliance comes to the fore, with FTC's own Travis Boak (#1 forward) and Tim Kelly (#2 forward) leading the pack over Seoul's Patrick Dangerfield (#3 forward) and Tokyo's Josh Dunkley (#4 forward). Toronto also has Rowan Marshall (#6 forward) to pick from, so don't be surprised if all 3 are selected (and rightfully so).
OverallEurAsia go into this match as heavy favourites with several high performing players so far this season. There is a lot of pressure on renowned big scorers in Cripps, Boak, Tim Kelly, Macrae and Bont to reach their ceilings in this game, else this could get ugly, and quick. I'm tipping at least a 100 SC point victory to EurAsia, making it 4 in a row!
Suck it AAP!

Preview done.
Jeepers. AAP are gonna get smashed. Who do you even have?
If some is averaging 151 in the past month, you chuck the C on them yeah? It's only the #1 ruck himself: big Maxxy Gawn
Then there's last years EurAsian captain, the 154 scoring Nat Fyfe
Oh, then there's the guy whose averaged 129 in the past 3 games in defence: Dane Rampe
David Mundy has been a jet in the forward line, and Michael Walters is a consistent GUN!
Wildcard? Jarrod Lienert. 95 average in his last 4.
That core will win you the game, the rest don't matter. Kinda like AAP
Tom Stewart is the only defender we need.
Karl Amon
Brodie Grundy to bathe the Bulldogs lack of ruck division next week. You know who the C should be @Rico ;)
Also gives you a chance to finally coach the great Lachie Neale as well 8)

Smart move putting some PremIErs in the squad, give the team abit of championship pedigree that its lacking.
team looks fine, probably a similar line up to who i would have gone
i think id bench Sloane and put Gawn in the util spot.

After Adel/RichOh my! AAP have come out firing, with Islander Rory Laird contributing beautifully, but it was Buenos Aires' Reilly O'Brien that has turned the game on its head, with an AMAZING 181! He may be in the emergencies, but his contribution will put AAP 18 points ahead with one less player! I actually think this could be an unassailable lead, because there are no scrubs playing in this match...
... oh, Bachar Houli (New Delhi), I didn't see you there... how much did you hear?
Thank god for Destroyer Rory Sloane who has kept EurAsia SOMEWHAT in it, with teammate Matt Crouch also underperforming on the big stage. EurAsia will need some big contributions just to break-even at this point. Game on.

After Carl/GCSOnly one player was involved from the above two teams - the man mountain himself - Rio's Patrick Cripps. But, exhausted from his 194 last week, he has shat the bed and put in a stinking 78... AND as VC! AAP have used their VC potential loophole too, which leaves them open to a potential bad C score.
EurAsia would be thrilled with this result! But, so much work lies ahead.

Salty SecondsGee it would have been hard to pick, but Seoul's Charlie Curnow (154) might end up being the saltiest second for the round. EurAsia need scores like that to catch up. Moscow's Petrevski-Seton (111) would have been handy, but I wouldn't say Ricophants would be regretful at either player really, too left field.
For AAP, Toronto's Matthew Kreuzer (119) would have put up a respectable effort in the ruck (which used to be a problem for AAP), whilst Mexico City's Anthony Miles (118) would have put in a decent innings too.
EurAsia would have loved Dunkley and Walters efforts for next week!

After Nm/GWSA masterful revision from FTC saw them dodge fielding the disappointing scores from Cape Town's Cunnington and Rio's Ziebell, but they are still in the emergencies; a bad score waiting to happen in the event of a sub.
For EurAsia, Seoul's Josh Kelly put in a much needed contribution which sees EurAsia catch up a little, but, including ROBs score, they are only 32 points ahead with one extra played. The Cripps/Kelly scores certainly have swung the odds a little, but AAP still with the advantage, especially considering EurAsia has used 3 of their 6 mids.

Salty SecondsEurAsia probably missed one here, with Tokyo's Zac Williams (143) putting in a massive effort. Although hindsight makes fools of us all, he did average 105 from his last 6, so perhaps Ricophants does regret that one. Moscow's Stephen Coniglio (130) also would have been a fine selection, but his formline has wavered in recent weeks.
For AAP, it really does look like they would have been fine in the ruck division, with Cairo stalwart Shane 'Sausage' Mumford scoring 117, followed closely by FTC's own Jacob Hopper (114). But I reckon FTC sleeps well on those counts tonight.
Wavered? He scored 200 two weeks ago and I told Rico to pick uConigs!

FTC, Gaff might have to deal with a Dylan Clarke tag. Clarke has kept his last two opponents very quiet.
If you need a solid Defender, Michael Hurley is a safe option.

True that.
After Wce/Ess/Syd/HawWell, we certainly have a contest, that's for sure!
Buenos Aires' Luke Parker has put in a huge effort, much to the delight of AAP. Unlikely premo Ricky Henderson (Cairo) also put in a solid showing on the bench to make it 257 from those two players.
You'd almost think AAP would have it in the bag! Then...
James. Sicily.
EurAsia, despite only mediocre contributions from Ricophants' own Jake Lloyd and Shannon Hurn (ahem, to combine for a mere 265 from the New Delhi defense), only find themselves keeping up the pace thanks to the Sicily nightmare.
EurAsia were only given 'average' scores from its emergencies in PNL's Merrett and London's Sheppard, so I'm not Ricophants loops them in. Pacific's Michael Hurley rounded out AAP's emergency contingent with a 74, meaning ROB aside, AAP are doomed for a poor score if a best XV player is subbed out.
Including ROB's 181, AAP are 68 points up, all other things being equal.

The Salty SecondsDunno about this one FTC, I think not naming Rio's Elliot Yeo (142) might have been a clear blunder, given his 117 average from his past 6 matches! We'll forgive not naming Cape Town's Callum Mills (132) in defense, as well as your own Jack Redden (122).
For EurAsia, London's Dom Sheed (148) would have certainly been handy right about now, as well as his AFL and WXV teammate Luke Shuey (122). But I think we give Ricophants a pass on those ones. But missing my own Zak Jones (117)? Shame.
Also, it's kinda cool how Ricophants named three of its defenders, to go up against FTC's three forwards. The battle of the bookends!
HENDO
Too much uncertainty about a potential Dylan Clarke tag to pick any of our West Coast mids this week, and with Yeo coming off a calf injury, I wasn't up to take that risk. We won't talk about the coaching decisions at Hawthorn...

Its also interesting how there isnt a single actual fwd in the AAP fwd line. We got 2 mids a defender and a ruck.

All in all, I think EurAsia really missed on an opportunity in those three games.
In it, they saw a putrid 79 from Beijing's Lachie Neale and a very uninspiring 91 from last years captain Nat Fyfe (91). There was also missed opportunity to VC loophole the magnificent Max Gawn's 151, albeit that would have meant dropping Neale (good with hindsight) and copping a 'meh' 104 from PNL's Merrett.
Thank god for Gawn though, and Seoul's Dangerfield (141), otherwise this result would be decided. Others for EurAsia included PNL's superstar Luke Ryan (106), and Berlin's Michael Walters (100), who only put in OK showings. And yes, I know, thank god Berlin's Mundy (63) was an emergency. Let's hope neither Dunkley or De Goey get subbed :-X
For AAP, I thought it was much more successful.
Cape Town's Mitch Duncan (121) did AAP proud, closely followed by Toronto duo Rowan Marshall (119) and Travis Boak (118), as well as Rio's Daniel Rich (113). These were all valuable contributions.
Cairo's Tom Stewart did JUUUST enough (96) to not be deemed a total disaster, but it was Toronto's Tim Kelly (76) that really disappointed. Thank flower for AAP that he rallied after half time where he only had 26!
So, with ROB's 181, AAP are 43 points ahead, all other things being equal! GAME ON!

Salty SecondsOh my, EurAsia should have looked to Tokyo in the ruck division after all! Scott Lycett (180) would have essentially matched the massive ROB score, and really put EurAsia back into favouritism. Dublin's Tom McDonald (135) rose from the grave, whilst New Delhi's Stef Martin (130) is also likely to score more than that scrub from Collingwood.
For AAP, they really nailed their selections! The highest score they missed out on was only Pacific's Jarryd Lyons (112), followed by New York's Dan Houston (110). A selection masterclass.

EurAsia ROBbed
This clash will live forever in the history books; arguably the best we'll ever see. In a game were 3596 points were scored, it was only decided by 4.
AAP started out as overwhelming underdogs, but turned the tables immediately when eventual Worlds medallist - from Buenos Aires - Reilly O'Brien scored a MAMMOTH 181 points. EurAsia was on the back foot from that point, only being kept in the game by either a AAP player sh!tting themselves, or a brilliant individual performance dragging the rest of the team upwards.
But with one AFL game to go, and both captains as well as two teammates left to play from each team, the EurAsian trio had to outscore the AAP trio by 44 points.
And with Captain Brodie Grundy (Beijing) up against an inexperienced Tim English, if anyone could lead EurAsia to victory, it was him. And boy, did he go for it. 174 SC points later, compared to AAPs captain Bontempelli's (Pacific) mere 109, Moscow's Jordan De Goey and Tokyo's Josh Dunkley had to overcome Toronto's Macrae and Buenos Aires' Caleb Daniel.
But Jack Macrae was just immense, scoring an incredible 148 to JUST get AAP over the line for its most famous victory!
A huge congratulations to the AAP Alliance, who have now stopped a three game losing streak with its best ever score! Special mention must also go to FTC, who brilliantly coached the Alliance to victory with tactical use of the emergencies and active monitoring of the game. Bravo!

Coniglio pulled out a 208 two weeks ago and you don't pick him?
:o
You are correct
Coniglio outscored every EurAsian Mid, and had he been picked over 4/5 of them, they would've won.
