Semi Finals, AFL Round 21
Home Team | Away Team | Venue | Head-to-Head |
Pacific Islanders | New Delhi Tigers | Linkbelt Oval | 2 v 5 |
Seoul Magpies | Dublin Destroyers | Seoul World Cup Stadium | 3 v 5 |
The home teams both face teams they've struggled against in the past, in what shapes up to be two tense games!
Pacific v New DelhiHead-to-Head: 2 v 5
Last time they played (Round 9): Pacific Islanders (23.6.144) lost to New Delhi Tigers (23.11.149)
2018 Head-to-Head: 12 v 6
Purps' Takeaway: Looking at the H&A seasons of both teams here, it's clear that Pacific have been the better performer. But, I guess that really doesn't count for much right now... except for a handy mental edge. Or does it? Andrew Gaff going full bonkers and getting himself suspended for the rest of the year might have injected the Tigers with a bit of self belief! Oh boy is it needed, because the Islanders can look intimidating with Tom Mitchell's hands on the wheel. They did after all score more points this year than anyone else. It is weird then, that they have lost to every Top 6 team this year, including their last encounter with the Tiges. I'm starting to convince myself the Islanders might be shaky! It'd be tempting to tip the Tiges, but they haven't really inspired faith with their recent form. Islanders for me.
Seoul v DublinHead-to-Head: 3 v 5
Last time they played (Round 17): Seoul Magpies (24.6.150) def Dublin Destroyers (23.9.147)
2018 Head-to-Head: 9 v 9
Purps' Takeaway: Awwww yeah boi! This game is my MATCH OF THE ROUND! Just look at that 2018 head to head! Not only that, but often these two teams were separated by less than 10 SC points in a given week. Both Seoul & Dublin have midfield Titans that have got them this far, but when they've lost, it's because of no one else standing up for Seoul, and Dublin's shaky defence failing to fire if the rest of the team isn't already injured. Seoul certainly have looked a better team since Danger has come back into form, but perhaps it is Josh Kelly or Clayton Oliver that is more deserving of captaincy honours? Over the past 5 games, Clarry has averaged 133, Danger 127 and Kelly 128 (courtesy of a mammoth double-ton last week). Far out, it must be a nice problem to have! Meanwhile at Dublin, I was actually shocked to see (just now actually) that they don't have a single player averaging more than 105 this season! But I tell ya what though, there isn't much of a drop off in their top 20 averaging players. So, Dublin depth v Seoul's superstars? I think I'm feelin Seoul in this one.
And don't forget reserves! All four teams (Toronto, Tokyo, London and Cairo) who are in the Reserves finals this week are not in the seniors. What I require from you, is that you
NAME YOUR BEST SENIOR 18 like you were playing finals. I will be scrutinising your best XV to determine if that is really who you would play, so as to ensure that the players available for the reserves matches are the ones that would normally be available. If I don't agree, then I will name one for you.

sadly I think it will happen in finals too. That middle path of the season very costly
Quote from: Toga on July 24, 2018, 11:22:01 PM
Sounds stupid sitting in 2nd at the moment but I've lost too many first-choice defenders this year (due to poor form or injury) to challenge much in the finals I think :-\ It's one thing having our midfield fit and firing but I can't have spuds like Roarke Smith and Tom Clurey playing down back if I'm to match it with the big guns.
Not a lot of confidence amongst 5 of our final 6 teams, clearly none of them want it bad enough. Just hand the Edgelords the cup now.
Mind games.
Pacific in trouble of going out in straight sets with Gaff out, while Seoul's midfield is looking ominous.
Ada, do you save these quotes thinking I can use them later in the year or did you search through for them?
The Edgelord has these stored in the data files. What you all don't realise is that The Edgelord is a supercomputer.

Definitely do not save them. The Edgelord doesn't forget weakness when he sees it.

5 round average
Alex Rance, Tom Mcdonald, Steven May, Phil Davis
65 91 94 81 = 331
Tuohy, Haynes, Salem, Marchbank
93 64 93 66 = 316
Slight edge to Dublin with Rance a big possible upside, Salem a wild card.
Dustin Martin (C), Matt Crouch (VC), Rory Sloane, Joel Selwood
216 107 97 97 = 517
Dangerfield (C), Kelly (VC), Oliver, Swallow
254 128 133 77 = 592
Huge edge to Seoul and will be incredibly dangerous if Swallow is good. Dublin mids all capable of going big though so might close the gap
Todd Goldstien
105
Ceglar
75
Slight edge Dubin, Godly will need to bounce back
Jack Rieowldt, Justin Westhoff, Jack Gunston, Tom Hawkins
95 85 101 117 = 398
Curnow, Parfitt, Daniel, Trengove
70 73 75 62 = 280
Huge edge Dublin, but id bank on the gap being smaller this week. Surprisingly the gap in the FWD is bigger then the gap in the midfield.
Majak Daw, Nick Holman
93 59 = 152
Smith, Shiels
82 91 = 173
Slight edge Seoul, with Holman a big drag. Hill Lids out hurting here as it would be advantage Dublin.
Predicted Score
Dublin 1503
Seoul 1498 with HGA
Its a real Coin Flip.

Yep he's been awesome this season, hasn't missed a game and really only one bad performance.
Doesn't get a massive amount of touches, but his tackling pressure is a level above. Main reason he got our nomination for the Coaches award.
Off to a 50 point lead early, along with HGA it's a good start. We normally lose against the better Clubs, but this week we'll buck the tread.
1500+ and put New Delhi to the sword.
Fuark, Reiwoldt! RIP Seoul
After Geel/Haw/Rich/GCSAre Pacific vulnerable with only a 102 from Captain Titch, and no Gaff? Well, NDT will have to seriously lift to expose them.
BIG GAME for Seoul v Dublin! Jack Riewoldt went BANG with a 200+ score! WOW! You'd think that'd be the end of it... enter, Danger. He has absolutely killed opposing Captain Dustin Martin, and has somehow kept Seoul in front :o huge contributions from Ceglar, Smith and Shiels too, and I reckon Seoul have primed themselves beautifully for Clarry and Kelly to take it from here.

Seoul v Dublin :o
flower you Walker!
After Port/Wce/Adel/Gws/Coll/BrisWe have two very interesting finals right here!
The Islanders are putting in a comparative stinker, letting Captain Sidebum get New Delhi back into the game :o if it wasn't for a huge Himmelberg performance, the Islanders could be in real trouble. They still have the advantage, assuming a HGA of 43, to be 69 points up with the same players played. But can Aliir, Taberner, Ahern and Bont take it up to LLoyd, Hannebery, Ziebell and Langdon? THIS IS GONNA BE A PEARLER!
This game is nuts. Will Tex Walker concussing Seoul superstar Josh Kelly cost them? Dublin look destined to score 1500+ with 1600+ well and truly on the cards. It's no certainty - despite a strong platform - that the likes of Daniel, Trengove and Marchbank can get Seoul there either. I honestly couldn't say who'll win this game! STAY TUNED!

Prediction
Seoul to win by HGA after Trengove goes 130+
NDT to win by <30 after hannas puts up his first ton for the year
I'm totally feeling a Hannebery ton actually
Glad some are because I'm certainly not! Haha
Should have chanelled RTB and backed in the kids (Sier)
The real contest is Ziebell vs Ahern who can not spud the most.
Well, I certainly didn't see 22 disposals in the first half coming from Caleb Daniel.
Goldy 71
Daw 43
vs
Trengove 45
Daniel 65
Tense!
C'mon Bont, you need to cover that Hanners ton.
After North v WBBig game from the Bont! But... awful game from Ahern, who takes the HGA bonus down further. Ziebell started poorly, but kicked on in the second half to post a semi-competitive score. The Islanders are essentially 146 points up with 1 extra played, but would be nervous with Taberner to come, and Lloyd 7 Hannebery currently doing well. It's gonna be tight!
Seoul would be thrilled geting 203 points from Daniel & Trengove, whilst Goldy & Daw's 214 was great from Dublin too. But... Dublin needed Trengove & Daniel to go bad, and they didn't. This game is also going to be crazy close, but Seoul with the advantage.

In that case Christchurch go through since I've outscored both of you this week.
Charlie kicks a goal! OMG
these finishes are actually nuts
It might come down to scaling for both games
98 seconds to go
Seoul needs 10 more points!
Charlie nearly brought one down...
Now for scaling :-X

Thanks JB, another great game between Seoul and Dublin.
Totally unlucky with kelly.

Piecific were atrocious. Out in straight sets! LOL
Lucky you only played NDT this week. If I named the right captain last week Christchurch would have embarrassed you even more than NDT did this week.
Wow what an insane couple of results!
Very unlucky JBs, no doubt you will be up the pointy end again next year though.
Langdon Heroics Take Tigers to Prelims
Wow. This would have to be up there for one of the biggest upsets I reckon. Pacific finally had an off game, and it cost them.
I'll leave the scorecard to do the talking... be sure to check it out. But a huge congratulations to New Delhi! And serious commiserations to Pacific, whom were very unlucky to score the most points in 2018 and somehow not beat a top 6 team, or make the prelims. May your luck turn in the future.

Game of the year. This had it all:
- a 200+ individual cameo
- 15 centurions
- high-octane scoring
- Captaincy drama
- HGA drama
Just to name a few. It all came down to Charlie Curnow & Caleb Marchbank to score 148 points between them to win the game. Charlie did OK with 81... but Marchbank choked horribly, scoring 29 and becoming the HGA, agonisingly falling short.
Game of the year. Just, wow. A big congratulations to the deserving Dublin, and a huge commiserations to Seoul, whom for the second year in a row have their premiership quest stopped by Dublin.
