Title: WXV Round 12: Will Cairo sink the Destroyers?

ROLLING LOCKOUT

This means you can change your team in-between games. Exactly like SC. However, keep in mind that loopholing is no longer allowed.

Please make a new post if you change your team (well, at least from after the bounce on Friday night)! Else I might not pick the change up.

For your reference, this is how the next 3 weeks is panning out!

Written by Adamant. Thanks Ada!

At the start of the season I predicted Dublin to scrape into the top 8 on percentage at the end of the home and away season, and they aren't letting me down. They currently sit in 8th place on the ladder, 2.78% clear of the Revolution. Although with a highly likely, and extremely amusing loss to Buenos Aires yet to be reflected in the ladder, and a run home that includes Berlin, Seoul and the volatile Tokyo, you'd have to say that they have roughly a 3.14% chance of making finals in 2018. After failing to register a score above 130 across the first 7 rounds of the season, the Sands have gone bang with an average of 141 over the past month, which includes a top score of 155. However, injuries to the in-form duo of David Zaharakis and Mitch Robinson are a big blow to a side that is already lacking leadership and against a Dublin outfit with no notable outs. Despite this, they will still have enough in the tank to end Pie's season right here. Cairo in a canter.

After a somewhat shaky start to the season in which they went 0-2, New Delhi have quietly gone about winning 7 of their past 8 games (and 8 of their past 9 once round 10 is completed), and if they can get boom recruit Dan Hannebery up and going in the second half of the season, that will make them all the more potent. It's hard to find many positives to come out of PNL this season, but Luke Ryan is certainly one of them. New Delhi by lots.

3rd vs 6th, #8 for points scored vs #4th for points scored, this is my MATCH OF THE ROUND! (I've always wanted to say that). 'Jing's incredible 9-game winning streak game to an end last week in a narrow loss to the Tigers, where had spud Rockliff just scored a measly 55 points, would still be undefeated since round 2 despite scoring over 150 just once in this period (although if Wines, Rockliff and Jonas combine for 279 this weekend that would make it twice). Seoul themselves have only scored 150+ twice in the past 10 weeks, and although have been extremely consistent, appear to have lost their high ceiling. Injuries? sure. But being the #1 reserves team for points scored I don't think that's a valid excuse. An all-important top 4 spot is up for grabs here, but who wants it more? I think Dangerfield is well and truly due and with that I think Seoul will get up.

Tokyo are without a doubt the most unpredictable team in the competition, scoring in the low-120s for weeks on end before pulling a 140+ score out of their ass. That makes them a potential danger for any team they come up against, despite their mediocrity. The Islanders just continue doing what they do, consistently scoring above 140. They currently sit at #2 for points scored (behind Toronto) and don't look like slowing down anytime soon. Is this the year Tokyo finally do something of relevance by taking a big scalp and catapulting themselves into the 8? I don't think so. Pacific here.

The Brewers have been flying under the radar in 2018 but currently sit in 2nd place on the ladder despite choosing the wrong captain just about every week. However, Lever going down with an ACL is a cruel blow to an already troublesome backline. They also could have done without their star midfielder hitting a flying forearm and getting himself rubbed out. He certainly doesn't possess the discipline of a guy like Jesse Hogan. You'd have to say that Buenos Aires are exceeding expectations having already netted 3 (likely 4) wins by round 12, and would no doubt be getting a kick out of watching their gun kids develop every week. They just aren't on Berlin's level... yet. Brewers for me.

The Saints have barely got out of second gear this season but have still managed to pick up important wins and now find themselves sitting inside the top 4 with six rounds to go. Interesting stat, they average 143 with Gary Ablett Jnr in the side compared to 132 without him. It is pretty clear that the little master is the barometer for the side, and you get the feeling they'll be looking to perfectly time their run into finals. The Jags, like any developing side, have been fairly inconsistent but are still capable of going 140+ on their day, and will need Angus Brayshaw to continue his rich vein of form if they are any chance to do so this week. Christchurch will be too strong though.

The Cobras are perhaps the most disappointing side of 2018 behind Moscow in my opinion, I certainly didn't pick them to be bottom 4 coming into the season. On the plus side an early draft pick will be beneficial for them to do trades such as Dion Prestia + Pick 4 for Mitch Duncan. barbies. The Suns have found a bit of form with three scores of 130+ in the last five weeks but really, have probably already started counting down the days until the trade period opens so they can bring in guns like Weitering. Cape Town for me.

The Revolution have performed pretty much as expected in 2018. A middle of the road side capable of taking some scalps, but also losing some winnable games and currently sit in 9th place. Their recent form has been reasonably solid however, averaging 144* over their past 5 games (*if Ryder and Houston score their respective averages this week) and have a real chance of ousting Pie on the run home and making the 8 in the process. Moscow's recent form has been very good, scoring 155 and 152 over the past two weeks and showing exactly why I predicted them to make the top 6 at the start of the season. That's not going to happen thanks to a disappointing start to the season (they weren't scoring terribly mind you) but they WILL cause some damage to contending teams over the last six rounds, and I think it's going to start with New York. Moscow in a tight one.

Toronto's season to date has been nothing short of dominant and the boys will get a well-deserved rest with the bye this weekend. The week off will be spent scouting the players representing the AAP Alliance before I select and assemble the greatest team ever seen in WXV history next week.

Could be without Laird this week.   Toyko with HGA are certainly capable of getting a winning score, we have to be switched on.
Pacific really can't afford to lose anymore games, need a big win to keep the percentage healthy.

We won the AAP Alliance Premiership last year m8. We might not have a WXV Premiership (yet), but at least we don't have a wooden spoon in our trophy cabinet. Dublin will forever be reminded that they have been the lowest of the low, and the pie-est of the pie.

@Purple77, a question regarding non-loopholing. I intend to name Macrae at M4, Naitanui at U1 and Redden at U2 next week, however if E1 Hopper scores 120+ this weekend and any of those aforementioned players are unavailable for selection next week, would I be forced to name an inferior player to avoid getting his score as it would be seen as loopholing (when in reality he would have been the next player selected anyway)?

Conversely, if Hopper scores 37 this weekend and one of Macrae/Naitanui/Redden are unavailable for selection, but Dion Prestia becomes available for selection next week (a player that I would have selected ahead of Hopper if fit), would I be prevented from naming him as it would be seen as avoiding Hopper's score?

This is why I was absolutely baffled to see loopholing scrapped. Seems like far too much grey area to me!

Hmm, that's an interesting thought.

After much pondering, the reason of the rule comes to mind, which essentially is (consistent with normal weeks), to ensure you name your best 18 players at the time of the opening bounce of the first game (minus known and certain unavailabilities). You decide on a sequential order of players: 1-15, then 16, then 17, then 18.

The practice being banned is artificially changing that 'natural' sequence to gain the benefit of known scores from your 16th+ and 19th+ (often known future scores of 0) players.

With that in mind, I feel like that given prestia is not a known and certain unavailablity (and you want his score if he is available), you should name him on your bench before Hopper (or a blank spot in the way you've named your team).

Should it turn out that he doesn't play, then you can't name a player with a known future score of zero in E1 (unless you have no choice). You'll have to name your next best unlocked player.

It's not nice, this situation, but that's the risk you have to weigh up now  :(

Some food for thought once we do our rule review in September.

That does seem to make the most sense given the circumstances. Thanks Admin.

I doubt Prestia plays next week anyway with Richmond having the bye the following week, and Hopper is going to ton up this week so I'll give him a run.

You don't have 15 available to field Holz?

hard to tell with it being the split round.

have decided to give some of the boys a week off so they are ready for a big back end of the season after the bye. Top scored last week in 2nd gear so taking it even easier this week.

Good to get some experiences into some of the lesser players, when you have a dynasty its important to do that.

If i had no depth i would be fielding 8 players and wouldn't have top scored last round.

Rio will win. 1/3 of our best XV out is okay most weeks, like if we were up against Dublin or something but McKernan and his crew will prove too much to conquer, even with HGA.

Rio will win. 1/3 of our best XV out is okay most weeks, like if we were up against Dublin or something but McKernan and his crew will prove too much to conquer, even with HGA.

You deserve to lose for not captaining Gary.

Naming an unnamed player looks like loopholing to me. Pretty sure that Rio don't get a replacement player now as their penalty, right?

Whilst strange, given that he was in his initial submission and he didn't make a new post/adjustment after that to include him, it's fine.

Oh Brown. OH BEAMS! Cairo just can't pick a captain that will ton up  :-\ fortunately for the Sands, Dublin captain Matt Crouch didn't do much better, but there isn't a lot of hope here for Cairo. If Dublin can't find a 15th player, MAYBE, but I reckon Dublin win.

:o :o :o It couldn't happen could it?! Officially curious now! PNL just need a miracle real life call up of a ruck. But I just feel like New Delhi will get on top of them.

After the Dangerfield *ahem* rest, it's still early days for Seoul, with Josh Kelly certainly firing. Oh, how a loophole would be good in this instance. The 'Jing will likely set a 140+ score to chase down, so yeah, too early to tell.

A decent start for both teams, but the Islanders have a favourable history of getting 150+ scores, so will back them from here. Unless... Phillips has a field day.

I find it hard to believe the Dillos will only score around 130, because they've had so many contributors! Boy, this team is gonna do damage in the next year or two. In my head, I've been doing worse than I thought, but again, it really depends on Gawn. I'll back him.

The Saints are on track to post something fierce here, with 160+ well and truly on the cards! If McLean goes nuts, even 170+! Watch this space! Whereas for Rio, there is only so much Jeremy Cameron can do.

Interesting game this one! The Suns have been steady with their 5 players so far, and likewise the Cobras. Neck and neck, you might say! I think I like the Suns from here though (subject to change), as HGA is healthy atm and Captain Sicily is still to play. But, early days.

The Revolution have recognised the threat of Moscow and are performing accordingly, whilst Heppell being subbed out is a cruel blow for Moscow. New York, with the points on the board, I reckon.

The Toronto coach should perhaps re-think his classification of this game as a 'bye', because if he isn't careful, and Shuey does a number against Sydney next week... they could be in trouble. Watch this space.

You've had some ridiculous scores this week, we deserve a few.  :P Looks like you're on track for your highest score of the season!

Higgins 120 and Heeney 130 aren't surprising, certainly not ridiculous

Lewis pulling out his highest score for the year by a fair way, and some of your worse players overperforming.

Schaz crashing back to earth with a 50ish.  :-[

Lol who's over performed?

Lewis probably 20 points more than expected but all the others haven't done anything they hadn't been doing already this year

If anything, we've underperformed with CEY, Douglas etc scoring less than expected

Anyway, looks like we've got a tight contest!

Lol who's over performed?

Lewis probably 20 points more than expected but all the others haven't done anything they hadn't been doing already this year

If anything, we've underperformed with CEY, Douglas etc scoring less than expected

Anyway, looks like we've got a tight contest!

Lol please

There's a big difference between good players having a good week vs players over performing

Not one of them is over performing

Over performing is someone going way above their norm Eg a 70avg random pulling out a 110+

CEY was averaging over 90 up until recently so he's dropped off lately which is disappointing

Anyway I'll leave it at that, I know better than to try and convince you of anything

You could make a fair argument to say CEY has been over-performing every other week ;)

Touché!

But nah CEY is good, just struggled to get an opportunity in years past

Probably no surprise that his scores are dropping whilst they also lose :(

No contest, you're in with a shot for a 160+ score. We need all our depth to perform well to compete without 6-7 of our best 15.

Moscow can't cope with injuries.
Dublin can't cope with injuries.

Libba and Scully have played 0 combined.
Murphy has barely played.
Griff missed plenty early.
Waite in and out.
Ablett in and out.
Wells in and out.
Sandi in and out.

Then there's the depth.
Hodor hasn't played.
Clay hasn't played.
Dickson barely played.
Moore barely played.
Morris barely played.

That's just the injuries. There's others like Lew Young and Cedric who just aren't being picked on Form.

Yet we're still prospering..

We're the best.

Dublin Destroyers   1559 - 142
Christchurch Saints   1529 - 139

Dublin pumping out 142 a week is struggling but Saints putting up 139 a week is "prospering" that says alot about the state of Dublin and the Saints.

I agree, we couldn't deal with injuries, or suspensions, for the last four years.  :P Albeit our reserves are reigning premiers, the sacrifice of that depth for quality has cost us thus far this season.

Hill and Dusty both back in

thanks guys i dont need you to be available for Eurasia i needed you this week.

Hoff 114 last night, what an absolute superstar.

that makes it

Ricky Henderson + Sam Kerridge + Jeremy McGovern v Jack Gunston + Nick Holman + 219

So assuming no late outs from Gunston or Holman (totally possible given my luck) should be on track to win with 14.

then I should have Dusty Hill Sloane back in after the byes so thats a huge boost.

May, Birchall a few weeks after that should be pushing and Lids might be back before the home and season ends.

things are starting to turn

Absolute masterstroke not playing Macrae.

What happens here @Purple77? I can only name Carlton, Gold Coast or Hawthorn players to fill the remaining spots but I have nobody on my list that has been named from those teams (although Peter Wright is an emergency for the Suns). I assume that I'll get Robertson's score for the vacated D4 spot while Melksham and Milera will cover the utilities, and no VC?

Oh Ada, look at the whole you've dug for yourself :P

You're kinda trapped in technicalities.

If you can't name anyone who you know is going to play... then I guess you'll have to leave those gaps in your side,  and - like I do at the beginning of normal rounds when people don't name a whole side - I'll populate the rest of your team according to your list preferences.

So yeah, you'll get the benefit of having your first choice players play, but the disadvantage of losing control of who is named in the remainder of your team.

So it looks like you'll get Macrae at U1 (as VC, unless you change it to someone on your field that hasn't yet played), Nic Nat at U2, and Lynden Dunn at D4.

I'm aware of the potential for people taking advantage of this process, and can indirectly loophole. But I don't think that has happened here.

Ugh.

With HGA added, it's Ed Curnow (CC) + Dow vs Matt Wright (rested) + 89

My team has shower itself a bit...

I don't like this situation.

Worst possible round to have no Fyfe too ;)

Correct. No Fyfe against a team that beats Dublin is usually bad timing!

I also don't want the world to see just how average my team is without him (and gawn)

@Dublin, no U2, E1, E2 or E3 named. On preferences... you actually had no one else play. Ouch. So just for completeness sake, I've named your next 4 players on your list according to preferences.

@Toronto, no VC, D4, U1 or U2 named. On preferences, they are now Lynden Dunn, Jack Macrae & Nic Naitanui respectively. Your VC is now Scott Pendlebury.

Undermanned Destroyers can still crush Cairo

Despite only 14 players taking the field for Dublin, they were still able to produce a competitive score and account for a Sands outfit that weren't having a good day. Can this team find steady leadership?!

Cairo Sands (17.7.109) lost to Dublin Destroyers (21.9.135)

Cairo: Tom Stewart, Taylor Adams

Reindeers shock Tigers

UPSET OF THE SEASON! I'll pay 10 bucks to someone who can find me a bigger upset for 2018. Shiel, Merrett, Ryan, Wingard, Harbrow, all these players we've come to associate with PNL stood up and took down a genuine premiership contender. This result is just nuts, and one that REALLY hurts New Delhi's potential for a top 4 spot and a home prelim final.

The Islanders sucked the life out of the Samurai, whom have been slowly slipping out of the finals race. This was a much needed win for Pacific though, if they want to make the top 4.

Second game this year I've lost to HGA  >:( but still, the Dillos deserve this, with a solid performance across all 15 of its players. I've said this before, but gee, imagine this team with a ruck.

Losing to a team with 14 players, could be our worst moment since having OOP mids. Maybe even worse.  :P ::)

Mexico City condemn Cobras

The Suns had two centurions - one of which was Captain Sicily - whereas the Cobras didn't have anyone that raised the bat. You won't win a game without a centurion. This could be the last of Cape Town's winnable games  :-\

Toronto show up late to defeat Royals

Calling this game a bye is one thing, but to forgetting to call up Macrae & Naitanui? That's something else. Alas, it was still too much for the Royals, who might have just regained the lead for the spoon with Cape Town.

Pacific make it 7 from 7 against Tokyo, whilst I'm pretty sure Mexico City become the first team to beat someone 9 times, now having a 9-1 record over fellow 2012 grand finalist Cape Town.

Pretty awesome that all my 'midfielders' made the bests (100+) this week: Wines, Ward, Zorko, Neale, Rockliff, Howe

Couple of massive upsets elsewhere around the league! :o
