Title: WXV Round 2: Top Teams - Toronto in, Mexico City out?
Post by: Purple 77 on March 27, 2018, 08:34:13 PM
TWO PARTIAL LOCKOUTS

(1) Thursday night at 7:50pm AEDST: Adelaide v Richmond

This means that all Adelaide and Richmond players you choose (or don't choose) to be in your team, will be 'locked in', meaning you cannot drop (or select initially un-chosen) players as soon as the first bounce occurs.

(2) Friday at 4:20pm AEDST: North Melbourne v St Kilda

This means that all North and Saints players you choose (or don't choose) to be in your team, will be 'locked in', meaning you cannot drop (or select initially un-chosen) players as soon as the first bounce occurs.

The rest of the round will be locked out at the commencement of Carlton v Gold Coast at 13:45 AEDST Saturday afternoon.

New York got lucky last week, but once again utilised their tactic of conceding defeat early to get the win. It was actually quite notable given how short-staffed they were, but they'll need them all back for this week. The Destroyers took out the highest score of the round, but I would say it was Seoul that impressed most. That can't be allowed to stand, can it Dublin? Dublin for me.

This clash is most certainly my MATCH OF THE ROUND! Although the Wolves were 80% new last week, they continued their improvement in an impressive win over the Thunder. I honestly do think Toronto could be our new resident top 4 team. New Delhi would be filthy at letting Dublin beat them AGAIN! Time to let it all out on an innocent bystander I say. The Tigers for me, in a 300+ point game!

The Magpies notched an amazing 4 SC point win over the Islanders last week, in this seasons first 300+ point game. And that was without Danger! He might have a new amigo in his return this week, with David Swallow (110) showing why he was so highly rated all those years ago. The Sands lost a chunk of pride losing to arch rival Cape Town last week, and they won no admirers with a low score in the 120s. In the interest of once again picking up a favourite past time of mine, I for one feel Cairo are no good and should  concede defeat for the rest of the season. *Ahhh, Worlds is back*. Seoul in this one.

Winning last week would have felt good for the 'written-off' Jaguars, even if it was against another 'written-off' team in Tokyo. I dunno, we shouldn't dismiss the merits of a 132, that score vicinity actually can bring a few wins.  The Islanders would have thought the same about a 150 mind you, and amazingly that wasn't good enough against Seoul, falling 4 SC points agonizingly shy of victory. I think they will bank on a rebounding victory here.

Now, I'm not one to prompt the wrath of the footy gods (that's an unadulterated lie), but I'm taking last week's win against Christchurch as a sign that Berlin is in for a good year. Previously, I'd have lost that match because I captained Fyfe over Gawn, or chose to play Michael Johnson over Menzel. But Lance Franklin getting 175 in the last match to take me over the line? That's gotta be a sign right? This week, I look to arguably the best WXV club ever in the Mexico City Suns in unrecognisable shape. Having finally tapped the well dry after 6 elite years at the top, the Suns look settled for a stint in the cellar (and about time too I hear its previous occupants say!). Still, massive respect for this team, and it'd still be a win I'd deem as significant. I'll back myself in.

The Spetsnaz managed a hearty 130 despite injury restricted scores on the park (not to mention the resident LTI that takes a new form every year). That XV is capable of much more, so what I took out of that performance was that Moscow can challenge for the 8 this year. Similarly, I found that to be the case of Christchurch too, except I really do think that if they stay fit... they could sneak into the 4. Led by GAJ & Grape, I'm backing the Saints on most occasions this year I reckon.

The Royals have copped a bit of flack over the pre-season, so it would have felt good to notch a win last week. The signs were actually quite promising, with 4 centurions ensuring London not only take the win, but showing that they can compete for the rest of the season. The Reindeers - well - that was an opportunity gone begging. Their fitness coach needs sacking I reckon, because only 16 players were fit last week and 2 of them needed subbing out. Can PNL field a XV this week? I'm backing the deeper side in London in this one.

The Samurai certainly have started seasons better in the past (*death stare*), and will already be looking to put last weeks performance behind them. But, moreso would their opponents in Beijing! The Thunder narrowly missed out on being eliminated from World Idol! That's right! The Thunder! What the hell happened? There is some much needed respect that needs to be earned back this week, and I think the 'Jing will be going 150+.

Now, although the scoreline was reminiscent to last year, the vibe certainly wasn't. Buenos Aires posted just 120, but when you see names such as Andrew Brayshaw, Paddy Dow and Riley Bonner making their debut, along with Jarrod Berry tonning up and Parish the steadying influence in the midfield... the light is bright at the end of the tunnel. The Cobras have probably already got their favourite win of 2018 behind them, but why stop there? You'd honestly be surprised how often scores in the 128-132 range notch up wins, and if they continue to score in this vicinity... they could make finals. Cape Town to make it 2 from 2 I reckon.

Such a waste of HGA this week  ;D

Our record vs Dublin at 3-3, that'd have to be right up there wouldn't it? Surely not many other teams have a better record vs Dublin?

Not really imigane you beat me in season 1 and 2. Then got 1 win in the last 4

Dublin isnt full strength you can easily win if you have a good game

Haven't we beaten you twice lately?  ;)

Dublin doesn't need to be full strength, we're absolutely shot to pieces

Hurn, Hanley, Tarrant, Henderson
Higgins, Steele, Dunstan, Lewis
Ryder
JJK, Rough, Betts, Reid
Douglas, Greenwood

Reckon you'll struggle against that?  ;D

Keen to take another good scalp this week. NDT will get Houli, Gray and possibly Hanners back so we'll have our work cut out for us but I reckon we're up for the challenge. Should be an interesting night at the selection table, especially if Dion is available. Tim Kelly and his 118 couldn't even crack the emergencies while a further two defenders went 98+ for Windsor. It's a good feeling to finally have some depth for once.

If we stay fit we're a shot at top 4! Go us!

Pity Libba is gone and others are missing. We had 17 available last week before Libba went down, and Scully, Griffen and Wells aren't likely to return this week. Relying on the likes of Waite, McVeigh and Sandi should be fine though. Depth is so 2016-17.

Still when we've got Parker in the team we could probably win with just 13 or 14 playing most weeks!

No.

A couple of years ago we had the Delhi Friday Night Curse, but after Bachar's effort tonight I think it's time to introduce the Toronto Thursday Night Curse and it's victims to date.

You would have thought his 84 was the equivalent of a 50 going by all of the hype after his JLT series!

If I can get 84's every week I would take it.

If you want more proof of a curse how about pointing the finger at Zorko, Rockliff & Brad Hill :'(

Dusty has had 2 Thursday night games. Therefore, you cannot accurately say at this stage that he has NO Friday night curse.

Why is Matt Crouch's score counted? I thought injuries prior to 1/2 time don't count?

Scott: Crocks what do you need this year?

Crocker: We're in dire need of some hard running high endurance accumulators.

Scott: Anyone already on our list who fits the bill?

Crocker: Ryan Clarke. Unaccountable as flower and not creative but runs all day and finds it.

Scott: Drummo what do you need this year?

Drummond: Very accountable small defenders. This whole trend for small forward lines is killing us. A bit of creative ability to spot options up-field would be a bonus.

Scott: Perfect! Ryan Clarke to the backline.

Drummond: I think you've misunde..

Scott: Meeting closed!

Carlton v GC was an insanely successful match for Seoul.  They could go really big with KelliveField to come.

Dublin's defence will turn an amazing game into just a really good one. Dusty, Sloane and Goldstein put this contest tp bed, but New York certainly isn't disgracing themselves.

The Toronto forward line!! The Wolves have more than made up for Ryan Clarke's shocking 24 - likely HGA - and have put New Delhi on the defensive. The Tigers really needed more from Captain Sidebum. Normally I'd write them off, but their remaining cattle has the potential to get 100 a piece on their good days. Toronto should get it from here though - and it'd be a huge scalp.

Similarly to Dublin, the Magpies defence has turned an amazing game into just a great one... but if we know Dangerfield... the Magpies could still notch 170+! Tom Lynch's 180, with Clarry's 146 and Swallow's 121 have won this for Seoul, but now we wanna see something big. Jeff Garlett's 152 should also be noted for Cairo, but not many teams will beat Seoul today, if any.

That Pacific scorecard is actually quite breathtaking... it's just a shame McGovern had to come in for Barlow, else everyone single player has actually tonned up. The Jaguars are actually going reasonably well, but alas, caught Pedo on a day where he played almost soley forward. The rest of the game would just have to go amazingly right for the Jags to win, and I don't see it happening. Pacific to join Seoul in scoring 160+ this week I reckon.

Berlin is really not doing THAT well, and would be vulnerable to at least half the competition this week. But unfortunately for the Suns, Weitering, Graham and Longer have killed any chance of an upset. Berlin will win from here.

This is probably the MATCH OF THE ROUND so far! These teams are neck-and-neck, and I don't see much splitting them really. I just want to note that normally when a team's R1 goes down, you'd be LUCKY to have a spud ruck named at E3. Not Moscow, though. Take note Cairo and Buenos Aires. The Saints also had both of their utilities go down with injury, fortuantely E1 Conor McKenna comes in a with ton to soften the blow. Who wins from here? I just look at Christchurch's CCs, and I find the answer. Christchurch in a thriller.

Early days for London, but I'd be thinking we're in for a sneaky chance, despite the slow start. PNL are on track for around 120-130, so London will need at least 3 centurions - maybe 4 - where one of them is Luke Shuey. It'll be a challenge, but I think London can do it. Hunter Clark hurts for PNL. London for me.

I mean, it's not impossible, just very unlikely for the Samurai to win from here. A Tom Jonas 50 and a Dan Howe 50 is not unheard of, and if that happens, we're on a level playing field. But even then, I like Wines, Rockliff and Breust over JJ, Smith and Dunkley. Beijing from here, but concerns are deepening.

I tell ya what, Bueons Aires would have loved to have captained their highest averaging player from 2017 in Ed Curnow. The bold call of putting the C on Bonner may come back to haunt them, as they are currently neck and neck with Cape Town. Buenos Aires have the runs on the board, but Duncan, Ebert, Papley and Jack can chase it down. Cape Town for me, by the difference between Bonner and Curnow's score  :-X

Even after I warned you last week.

Enough of the disrespect, trade him back right now.

What's the most Centurions a team as ever had?  Pacific have 9 so far with Mitchell, Guthrie and JKolo to come.

Conversely when was the last time a team had none. Heading that way with only Burgoyne a possibility to get it.

Beijing last week didn't have one.

I remember Dublin had 12 once, in early 2015 I think.

Score Summary
New York Revolution (1261) from 14# vs Dublin Destroyers (1225) from 11#
Toronto Wolves (1406) from 14# vs New Delhi Tigers (1207) from 14#
Seoul Magpies (950) from 9 vs Cairo Sands (1118) from 14#
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars (1182) from 14# vs Pacific Islanders (1192) from 12
Berlin Brewers (1282) from 14** vs Mexico City Suns (994) from 12#
Moscow Spetsnaz (1264) from 14# vs Christchurch Saints (1260) from 13*
London Royals (774) from 13# vs PNL Reindeers (985) from 14#
Tokyo Samurai (1133) from 14# vs Beijing Thunder (1132) from 13#
Buenos Aires Armadillos (1181) from 14# vs Cape Town Cobras (905) from 13

# = Captain Played
* = one Co-Captain Played
** = two Co-Captain's Played

Games of note:

London v PNL is running the risk of having no centurions amongst the whole 36 named. London could still win, but Burgoyne and Hardwich would need to get about 280 between them, and for Rioli to have a quite one... like the rest of the game.

Tokyo v Beijing. Tom Rockliff has amazing kept the Samurai in it, scoring just 17 for the Thunder. 17! with HGA  of 31 included, the equation is Zac Smith + 32 vs Breust + Howe. This could be close. But what is going on with Beijing?

Buenos Aires v Cape Town. Cape Town have really stuffed up the chase down, and are well and truly on the back foot. Captain Mitch Duncan would have to score 138 just to level the field, and then it'd be HGA (likely 46) + Taylor v Blicavs. It's unlikely, but it could happen for the Cobras. But expect the Dillos to notch up their first win of the season!

Gotta say, considering the players we are missing and the 2 late outs we've copped too, the fact that we could score 140 this week is pretty encouraging

I think we can only get better once we start to get more starters returning from injury :)

I was gonna say lucky for us but Zac Smith is not playing, but just saw Lycett is sitting on the bench with an 87. So we need Breust & Howe to score 119 for us to get up this week :-X

What's going on with Beijing? Good question - backline hasn't turned up and Tom Rockliff left his boots (and talent) in Mexico.

I actually got Selwood over Rocky. Selwood will smash 17.

Also on Matt Crouch his 0 is much better then a 17 as he gets subbed out and I get a 65 from Phil Davis. Crouch beat his score in like 15 minutes of football.

are you talking about Brad Crouch?

His cover Holman has just pumped out a casual 96 92 soo far.

Brad is resting up for finals, he pumped out a 96 last year while carrying OP, superstar. He turns up when he is needed with a solid 120 average in last years finals series.

I offered you trades for both CEY and Darcy Mac in the last week of the trade period. You didn't respond to my PMs and then proceeded to delist them! They would have been solid additions to Windsor.

Been eyeing off this bloke since round 11 this year after watching him put on an absolute clinic against East Freo with a lazy 35 disposals and 7 snags (5 of which came in the 3rd quarter). Very confident he'll walk straight into Motlop's vacated role at the Cats and average 80+.

Tim Kelly.

80+ is looking pretty conservative. Try 100+.

Dublin Destroy Revolt

A very admirable performance by New York, but only two other teams would have defeated a rampant Dublin this week. Captain bonus included, Dublin's midfield (subbing Holman in for the injured MCrouch) produced 693 points. I wet myself a little just now.

Toronto = New Delhi 2.0?

Wow. This is a massive scalp for Toronto, who followed New Delhi's path from the cellar into a revered team of the competition. I'm choosing to ignore this aberration from New Delhi for now, believing a 160 is in the horizon. Still, 0-2 is not an ideal start to the season.

Despite having two players subbed out for the match - and in $cully's case for much of the year - Christchurch have managed a huge total off the back of 9 centurions! Moscow put in a solid effort, but just couldn't keep up with the team with an AWOL coach.

155 with Clarke, KK and Redden combining for 113 SC points isn't too shabby. Might be seeing a bit of a changing of the guard in regards to the captaincy with Macrae outdoing Pendles.
