Time to start this old girl again for this season. Caught up with all of my U18s articles and footage, I have a much different view about this season so far... To me it seems super shallow. But it is still early, lets just hope a few more gems come out of no where.
I'll do a super early top 20 now, something for myself to look back at just before the draft.
1. Darcy Fogarty - Inside Mid/Forward
2. Cameron Rayner - General Forward
3. Jarrod Brander - Key Defender
4. Luke Davies-Uniacke - Inside Midfielder
5. Connor Ballenden - Key Forward/Ruck
6. Noah Balta - Key Forward/Key Defender
7. Lochie O'Brien - Outside Midfielder
8. Hunter Clark - Inside Mid/Rebounding Defender
9. Jaidyn Stephenson - General Forward
10. Jack Higgins - General Forward / Outside Mid
11. Sam Hayes - Ruck / Key Forward
12. Adam Cerra - Inside Midfielder
13. James Worpel - Inside Midfielder
14. Patrick Naish - Outside Midfielder
15. Charlie Spargo - Balanced Midfielder
16. Paddy Dow - Balanced Midfielder
17. Nicholas Coffield - General Defender
18. Cassidy Parish - Inside Midfielder
19. Jack Petruccelle - Inside Midfielder
20. Callum Coleman-Jones - Key Forward/Ruck
Really liking the look at a handful of the under ages, next year is going to be a good draft.
Can't wait for Naish to turn up at Tigerland. 8)

My uncle is mates with Unakies uncle, absolute jet, always get the ball and kicks goals, even when his side is getting smashed
Good work PK, good way to keep up to date!
Good win by WA today
Ian Hill did some very nice things, a run off halfback finished with a pin point pass to a half forward late in the game was magnificent.

An article on Balllanden doing some work in defence as well.
Charlie Constable/Andy Brayshaw PK?
Really hoping we Davies-Uniacke ends up at Carlton. Kid looks like a gun.

A few interesting additions here.
Sorry Money if Lions stick to their strategy of last year Davies-Uniacke may end up in Brisbane. To counter the go home factor we recruited country players rather than city based players.
Looks like Adelaide will be able to steal classy J Edwards for chips! Much as we did Jars son! 8) But Jackson will not be a rookie pick steal :P
I'd be expecting someone to bid for Jackson Edwards between the picks #15 too #35 ish. Surely too skilful to let him slip past that?

I reckon you'll be right here Ringo. DU to Lions would fit in very well too.
As would Rayner to North Melbourne.

Dad will see that he gets a run sooner or later.
Now that it's after the home and away season, I like to relook at some highlight vids, and some games from the youngsters.
Gladly say, my first draft isn't as good as my previous years. Missed a fair bit. And with a few injuries, it'll see a couple of guys drop off (Fogarty, Coleman-Jones). And now we know the first 10 picks; it'll start to shape in less then a couple of months before the combine.
Top 20;
1. Cameron Rayner - General Forward/Inside Mid
2. Luke Davies-Uniacke - Inside Midfielder
3. Paddy Dow - Balanced Midfielder
4. Adam Cerra - Inside Midfielder
5. Sam Hayes - Ruck/KP Forward
6. Darcy Fogarty - Balanced Mid/ General Forward
7. Jaidyn Stephenson - General Forward/ Outside Midfielder
8. Jack Higgins - Balanced Mid (Will most likely be drafted as a small forward)
9. Jarrod Brander - KP Swingman
10. Nick Coffield - Rebound Defener
11. Hunter Clark - Inside Midfielder
12. Oscar Allen - KP Defender
13. Charlie Constable - General Defender
14. Lochie O'Brien - Outside Midfielder
15. Patrick Naish - Outside Midfielder
16. Aaron Naughton - KP Defender
17. Joel Garner - Balanced Midfielder
18. Noah Balta - KP Swingman
19. Connor Ballenden - KP Defender (Bris Academy)
20. Andrew Brayshaw - Inside Midfielder
Fair few changes since 2 months ago. But I reckon the top talent in this draft is still really good. But not long after pick 25, the talent will drop off significantly. As compared to next years draft, which I can see being a potential 2013 super draft.
Mock Draft (Those not in finals);
1. Brisbane - Paddy Dow - Brisbane seemed to have worked out their problem with drafting out of state kids. Don't draft the whiny little girls from the city. Get big strong country boys. And I reckon Brisbane will do just this for the 1st pick this year. Dow might not be the best player, but he's an easy top 5 choice and will be a good fit in that Brisbane midfield.
Other Possibilities; LDU, Rayner
2. Gold Coast - Luke Davies-Uniacke - Gold Coast will be looking for another big bodied midfielder, to try and fill the void of Ablett and O'Meara. With Will Brodie, Hall, Swallow; LDU will be a great choice to finally help GC rise on the ladder once he gets a few good AFL games into him. Quicker learner, great player.
Other Possibilities; Rayner, Dow
3. Carlton - Cameron Rayner - Kid is going to be a beast, so no way Carlton would let him slip. Might play his first season or 2 in the forward line (Unless Gibbs leaves), and then transition next to Cripps to dominate in the midfield.
Other Possibilities; Cerra, Fogarty
4. North Melbourne - Adam Cerra - Another kid I couldn't see slipping much further. If they don't get Josh Kelly, this guy won't be a too bad of a choice. Very good collector of the ball, although he is not the quickest player, he'd still be a upgrade in speed over Cunnington and Swallow.
Other Possibilities; O'Brien, Fogarty, Stephenson
5. Fremantle -Oscar Allen - Bit of a stretch pick here. WA team, WA Player. But I think Fremantle could use an extra big bodied key defender. The lord Zac Dawson retiring, and Michael Johnson getting on. Allen wouldn't be a stupid choice. Of Freo could try move back to about pick 10-15 and still have a big chance to pick up Allen.
Other Possibilities; Brander, Balta, Naughton
6. Collingwood - Jarrod Brander - Collingwood need a key position player. Brander will easily the best choice for them. Can play both sides, I prefer him as a defender. Moore up one end and Brander up the other will see Collingwood actually win games more consistently. Because relying on Dunn isn't going to get you to finals anytime soon.
Other Possibilities; Naughton, Balta,
7. St Kilda - Lochie O'Brien - He can run, he can kick (accurately) and he doesn't mind a goal. Everything St Kilda is missing on the outside. Unless we trade both picks for Kelly, I want this guy, so badly to St Kilda.
Other Possibilities; Stephenson, Higgins, Garner
8. St Kilda - Darcy Fogarty - Done his knee, so his draft stocks will drop. Didn't have a good carnival either. But the kid is a machine, could easily come back from injury and do a Ryan Burton. His foot skills and awareness is elite, so he could be a decent goal kicking midfielder.
Other Possibilities; Stephenson, Higgins, Garner
9. Bulldogs - Jaidyn Stephenson - Would be an upgrade on Crameri if used as a midfielder, and would be a good choice on the wing. Can see him even fitting in the middle with Bontempelli at times. Has speed and great eyes. Wouldn't be surprised if he went early. But would love to see the Doggies pick him up.
Other Possibilities; Higgins, Garner, O'Brien
10. Melbourne - Nick Coffield - Elite off the back flank. Can also do stints in the middle, although it wont be needed with Melbourne midfield. One of the best kicks in the draft, so would help when kicking to someone on the run like Jayden Hunt or Petracca.
Other Possibilities; O'Brien, Brayshaw, Clark
Awesome PK, thanks heaps :)

West Coast would have been in there. But the barbies snuck into finals :P
Would be chuffed with Stephenson!
Just a minor alteration PK Ballandeen will be a Def/Fwd similar to McStay. Was used in defence to build his knowledge in Under 18s but playing as a forward in NEAFL. Not that it matters as Brisbane will take him whenever.
Interestingly as well has been said we are not adverse to trading Pick 1. Hope not as I want Dow or Uniacke-Davies

Depends on what offers you were getting for it. But Dow or LDU would fit in easily. Good chance they wouldn't leave the club straight away too.
I'm lead to believe that teams will need to use 2 1st round picks to secure the great Paddy dow

Only reason could be that we have an eye on some one in the probable 7 - 13 area more so than the first picks. Not really close to Noble but Fagan has said he is happy to continue developing current list and only really wants a hybrid mid in the draft,

Well won't go wrong with either Dow, LDU or Rayner. Only problem is Rayner looks like the type that would want to go back home to mum.

As you can see, nearly EVERYONE gets an AFL Contract just for playing this game. A few stiff boys and one who ended up having some kind of heart disease (Would have went early 2nd round if that was ignored). So most of the boys yesterday that played SHOULD get a contract, although a good chunk of them get rookie contract, it's better then nothing.

Nah. List him as a fwd. From what I have seen of him this year he will be a perfect swingman at some stage but will start out as a fwd.
I don't see Freo using pick 5 on him as well btw. This years draft looks very thin and very difficult to predict. The top end isn't as great as people think as well.

Opinions have well and truly changed Ridsy. I think the top end is good. But shoots down super quickly. And also like every other draft, there will be 1-3 random gems in there.
But i wont do another mock until all the picks are finalised.
Wouldn't mind the Saints trading 7 & 8 to Carlton for 3 + whatever they get for Gibbs. Rayner would be awesome for our midfield.

There is a clear number 1 and then it is a toss up between 3 or 4. If Raynor had any tank he might be in my top 5 but he doesnt and will end up playing 75% of time as a fwd in 5 years time imo.
I think Saints need outside class. 7 and 8 are very handy with guys like Coffield, O'Brien etc being available at that pick.
Yeah I agree, Rayner has the potential though. I'd be happy either way. Apparently North are keen on Stephenson, so no chance he will reach 7/8 now. So my dream scenario at the moment for 7/8 is Cerra + O'Brien. Even though it would be early for O'Brien, we don't have another pick until 40 odd... So picking someone in that 15-20 mark wouldn't be the worst, we need that really good disposal on the outside.

I mean, it's not like he's gonna be like "I'm not one bit interested in leaving Victoria" or something like that.
I have Raynor at 6 in my current rankings. I dont think he will have a tank to play mids at AFL level. Kid has talent but will require multiple seasons in the system to even get to a 40/60 split mid/fwd.
Rayner, Raynor, Raynar - can't even figure out how to spell the name let alone where he'll go in the draft ;)

As soon as he says i will go home as soon as i can they will cross him off their boards you would think. Its a smart move if Calrton tell them they will pick him up.
Carlton clearly the best team to go to in the top 4 picks in my opinion.
Hope Ballandeens value did not go up too much following his kicking accuracy. Happy with 2nd rd for him though.

Just put together my pre-trade period phantom draft. Still plenty to play out in the way of compo picks, late mail, trades, combine results and whatntot so this isn't anywhere near perfect, plus I haven't really looked too hard into the type of players each club needs at this stage, but I'll work on that over the course of the month so the post-trade period version is more informed.

Rumour has it if we (Lions) retain pick one we will draft Paddy Dow.
Not sure whether that will change now given Rayners statement he is happy to go to Qld.
LDU is the safe bet. Lions should play it safe.
This is how I see it currently.
Lions will take either LDU or Dow at 1.
Gold Coast will probably select the guy the Lions don't.
Carlton will then have a decision to make between Rayner or Cerra.
Roos look to have settled on Stephenson at 4.
Fremantle at 5 have indicated they will be looking at a tall with Hayes, Brander in the mix.
Then it will come down to Collingwood who are stacked in the mids and medium sized forwards. They are likely to go tall as well.
There is every chance to be a slider in this draft. My guess is it will be between Cerra and Rayner.
It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
This is definitely the hardest draft to predict at this stage anyways.
This is my first round! Obviously picks could still be traded.

I dont think Richmond would let Naish go :P.
And I reckon the Eagles would jump on Clark if he was available. He'd be that inside grunt that's needed now that Mitchell + Priddis have retired.

Richmond will want Naish + a tall. I would be leaning towards Balta or Allen depending on who is available at their picks and when the bid for Naish comes in.
It is very hard to predict currently. Let alone after picks have been swapped etc. For instance, what happens with picks 10 and 11? Dees will need to lose 10 for Lever and surely Bombers will need to use 11 for the 3 guys that want to go there. Will Richmond try and use the 2 picks to move up in the draft so they don't need to use their first pick on Naish? Does GWS try and get back into the first round this year by using next years first round pick? Plenty to change between now and the draft.
Yeah as I said very early days and a lot to change. Will be funny to see how close I am (not very :P) come draft night.
would be interesting to see a phantom draft now with the new order

Shouldn’t be too far off on the AFL site.
Rayner looking more and more likely to now be taken by Lions.

I done one last night (first 2 rounds), but i'm just tweaking it... Saints are in an awesome position mate.
Watch us pick someone flowering stupid for 0 reason.

Raynar is my clear number one too. Especially after saying he is happy to go too QLD to play footy.
Have heard that before only for them to return home after 2 years.
Pure naivety on behalf of kids saying they are happy to travel for their footy. Most of these kids lack the life experience to know what the impact on them will be. Personally I would take people who have boarded at school or moved a number of times ( not schools but physically families have relocated).
On a different note, is it well known what it takes to develop a players tank. have sports scientists got tests that identify limitations on the ceiling that players can develop?
PS if they have can they retest Jack Steele. Still trying to understand why this kid is not playing more minutes.

I'm rapt we kept our picks, but I would've been happy if we got say 2 and 20 as well. we were in a win/win situation. I don't get all the Saints supporters talkin shower
noice yeah post it up when you get the chance

Doesn't Higgins have injury issues. I've seen a few mocks that have us taking Higgins at 10 and Rayner at 3. Considering our need for midfield depth it looks like a dream if they're both guns.
Will be great if Ballandeen is not taken in Top 30. Less Points to use to match and possibly ensuring we also get Jack Payne.
Interestingly reports that we are now strongly considering Andrew Brayshaw at 1. So all eyes will be on us on draft night for pick 1. Will derinitely be one of Brayshaw, LDU, Dow or Rayner.

Hard to see Brisbane not taking one of them. my order is LDU, Rayner, Dow and Brayshaw.

Ok all I've heard is Tiges got Higgins with there first I thought with what I have read that this is the type of player that is in fashion after Bulldog and Tiges getting up in the last 2 years
Jackson Ross to the Hawks!

Just posting the Cat b Rookies for information at this stage. Suspect further to be added as Lions have now added Cian Hanley as Cat B seeing he was not picked up in Rookie Draft. Apparently Lions could re-list him as Cat B if no other club took him.

I'm more curious on Carlton becoming the new place for players to get a second chance :o.
