Here we are again, in the all too familiar position of a home preliminary final for the third straight year. But each one of those years offered a different angle of dominance if you ask me. In 2014, the Destroyers were the ones to come storming up the ladder; expected to do so from even before Round 1, to eventually claim the premiership. In 2015, well, I don't think I've ever seen such a dominant and flawless season, waaaay up until the Grand Final where the lost to the Suns. This year, one could make the argument that they've gone backwards... but they still claimed the minor premiership, and they still claimed a home preliminary final. They've showed the odd chink in the armour, but they still know when to perform and how to win; evidenced by their epic win against PNL in the qualifying final and by just generally coming to form at the right time of the season. In the last three weeks, they've scored 160, 160 and an unofficial 154, which contrasts vastly from their three weeks before that reading 132, 148 and 139. The fact is, is that Dublin remain a dominant force in the competition and probably even the premiership favourites at this stage. They'll go in this match as heavy favourites against a GAJ-less Rio.
(http://i67.tinypic.com/2d1k70h.png) | The Jaguars really stood up last week and did their H&A season some justice with a dominant win over the Revolution. Despite not having star ruck (or any ruck) Sam Jacobs (whom is tipped to return this week), the Jags posted their first 150+ score since the last fully fit GAJ game in Round 13. Although that performance would be a welcome confidence booster, it's a real shame that GAJ went down to injury, as really, Rio's fellow preliminary finalists have no that comes close to a fit GAJ. He was their premiership advantage; a finals advantage, and for a while there his absence looked like Rio wouldn't win a final. But thankfully, we were reminded that there are in fact other contributors at Rio... how else did they get all those 160+ scores throughout the year? Against Dublin, the Jaguars will go in as the underdogs, because it's worth pointing out that had these two teams played against each other every week this year (not including last week), Rio would have only beaten Dublin 3 times... wow, does that seem low to everyone?! Rio was the third highest scoring team of the comp! Jesus that surprised me... anyway, with that lost win coming in Round 12. The odds don't look good; but finals is a funny time, and does Dublin harbour any demons from last year's GF choke? Time will tell! But I'll have to tip Dublin. |
Mexico City - the most successful team in WXVs history - just continues to dominant. Pretty much; see the Dublin write-up. Last year's premiers I'd say have gone a few better this year, and clearly still fight a three-year long two-team battle as to whom is the best team in WXVs. The Suns ended up the highest scoring team of the competition in the H&A season, so really there isn't much you could say is a huge concern for them; except, that in their last 5 games they've only really posted a damaging score once (their 164 against PNL in Round 16). In the qualifying final, the Suns got a little lucky to notch up a win with a meagre 133 (third lowest score of the round) which was in fact their second lowest score of the season; the lowest also coming against Rio in Round 4 (crazy). It'd be a concern for sure coming up against a team that has won its past 7 matches, but I don't expect lightning to strike twice. The Suns have never lost to the Tigers, are the most finals experienced team in Worlds and average 151 ppg, which the Tigers have only topped twice. Gotta be heavy favourites, and if their 2013 preliminary final against the only other team to make the prelims from outside the 4 (Berlin) is anything to go by, then I'm expecting the Suns to appear in their 4th Grand Final. | (http://i68.tinypic.com/a0eyyg.png) |
(http://i67.tinypic.com/2hozeo4.png) | New Delhi! What a ride it has been! Wooden Spooners last year, preliminary finalists 12 months later! What an incredible journey and what an incredible transformation that its talented co-coaches have concocted. The year is already a roaring success, which pretty much means the Tigers are playing with no pressure and a level of freedom that makes for an infectious style of WXVs footy. I'll have to mention it again, but New Delhi are just the second team in 5 years to have made the prelims from outside the top 4 (Berlin in 2013 was the first), and when you consider that the Tigers have had to win their past 7 matches to make it here... it's just an incredible story. If they lost just one of those matches, they wouldn't be here, making club history. It's been because of Stefan Martin's 162 that finished a tight game against London. It's been because of a Steele Sidebottom & Stephen Coniglio dynamic that proved too much for Beijing. It's been because of choosing the ONLY centurion for the Tigers as captain in last week's Semi-Final against PNL to win the game. Just, what a year. But, I fear this is the end of the road for the Tigers. Had they played against Mexico City every week of the year (not including last week), Round 15 would have been their fourth a last win. It's been a helluva ride, but I just don't see the Suns losing this one. |
And don't forget the reserves!
Two teams (Christchurch and Buenos Aires) playing this week aren't playing seniors. What I require from you, is that you
NAME YOUR BEST SENIOR XV like you were playing finals. I will be scrutinising your best XV to determine if that is really who you would play, so as to ensure that the players available for the reserves matches are the ones that would normally be available. If I don't agree, then I will name one for you.

Ranking WXV Preliminary Finals
1. 2013: Buenos Aires Armadillos (22.13.145) lost to Sao Paulo Pumas (22.14.146)
I think this is the best game in WXV history. Buenos Aires had an amazing year - finish 2nd and winning the first qualifying final easily. The Pumas only barely limped into the finals. Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo were traditional rivals, but Buenos Aires had never beaten (and still have never beaten) Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo won the match by STRIPPING captaincy from Gary Ablett (for Rory Sloane). If they hadn't done that, they would've lost. Amazingly, when the final siren went, BUENOS AIRES WAS IN FRONT!!! But SCALING had Sao Paul in front by only 6 SC points.
2. 2015: Christchurch Saints (23.10.148) lost to Mexico City Suns (25.9.159)
The Saints had a very impressive first year in the competition, but it all ended here, as the Mexico City Suns showed its premiership material, with a solid 11 point victory away from home.
3. 2015: Dublin Destroyers (23.9.147) def PNL Reindeers (21.8.134)
The Reindeers lost both Dane Swan and Nathan Jones early, and they couldn't recover from it, despite a relatively low score from Dublin. Dublin showed a little bit of wobble, while PNL's finals curse began.
4. 2014: Dublin Destroyers (28.15.183) defeated Mexico City Suns (23.12.150)
In what everyone thought would be the Grand Final, Dublin were SCARY good in this match. A 150 score is good any week, and Dublin pulled out a 183? Dublin's Robbie Gray and Tom Rockliff scored over 500 points between them.
5. 2012: Cape Town Cobras (23.13.151) defeated Buenos Aires Armadillos (21.14.140)
Buenos Aires had a terrific finals series and had only just qualified for the top 4, but Cape Town's superb midfield was way too strong. Cape Town make the first WXV Grand final, and the highlight of Cape Town's history.
6. 2012: Sao Paulo Pumas (20.17.137) lost to Mexico City Suns (24.19.163)
Pumas were clearly the best team of the year, and the Suns had lost its first final. The Suns were way too strong this day, on the way to winning the first ever WXV flag, as the Pumas had a rare stutter and only its 2nd loss of the year.
7. 2013: Mexico City Suns (26.17.173) defeated Berlin Brewers (22.13.145)
Berlin's fairy tale season ended, and although they were competitive, the Suns had a MAMMOTH day, and nobody could touch them
8. 2014: Sao Paulo Pumas (25.18.168) defeated Buenos Aires Armadillos (19.14.128)
Buenos Aires had run out of puff late in the season, and it showed here, with them barely putting up a yelp to an impressive Puma team.

BREAKING: NDT STAR AXED!!Bamian Darrett | August 18, 2016 9:00pmOn the eve of a monster Preliminary Final against Mexico Suns, it's come to light that experienced midfielder Kieren Jack will be dropped for what is without doubt the biggest game in NDT's gloomy history.
Key NDT figures are reportedly furious at Jack for his recent trade talks with rival clubs.
It is our understanding that Jack has even agreed to the terms of a trade.

So co-captain Treloar was great for Dublin, Sloane below par
Kolodjashnij was terrible for Rio, but Hall good. Thompson and Boak and Jacobs and Pearce below par
Dublin 13/1071 (one cc left)
Rio 8/654 (captain left)
Good chance I've miscalculated....
So it is:
Dublin: 417 + hga (34) + Selwood x 1.5 + O Mac
V
Rio: Cripps x 2 + Mackie + Cutler + Vince + Zaharakis + Robinson + Wright
You know, Rio haven't made the most of this, and I think Dublin might hold on. If Cripps gets say 130 or more though....
After Saturday:
We have two ripper prelims on our hands!!
Dublin's Saturday afternoon was an absolute disaster; opening the door for Rio to take a huge upset win! But, with Kolodjashnij failing to take advantage of the Destroyer slow start, and CC Treloar leading the Destroyers superbly, it's back on level pegging terms if you ask me! Patrick Cripps is the key here, but I too don't think the Jags did enough early, and will back Dublin to win from here.
And what about the other match?! This awesome shoot-out has already seen 9 centurions with 7 more players to play, and with New Delhi accounting for 6 of those, they have given themselves an ALMIGHTY shot at winning :o :o :o but with Mexico City's HGA currently sitting at 72, and with Captain Rocky to play, I give the Suns a slight advantage, but incredibly, the Tigers are looking at a spot in the Grand Final!
Score SummaryDublin Destroyers (1071) from 13* vs Rio de Janeiro Jaguars (654) from 8
Mexico City Suns (1037) from 11 vs New Delhi Tigers (1289) from 12#
Wellington Weta (141) from 3 vs La Plata Armada (336) from 5
Mumbai Elephants (435) from 8 vs Copacabana Capuchins (476) from 8

Oh come Rio, you can't let an opportunity like this escape you!
Surely Dublin can't get through with that score!
Rocky and Stef are going to be HUUUGE and will be the decider's I reckon. NDT could really use a super low score from Mexico to bring HGA down too, and Buckley could be that guy!

Yeah, I'm worried about this as well. 120-130 might not be enough for me in my SC H2H this week :-\

Basically everything that could have gone wrong has. My forward 5 have been absolutely shocking. Good thing my midfield stood up.
Treloar is a superstar.
Selwood has won me one flag already i need him now. Imfearing a jelly 60 but a jelly 130 would almost put me through.
I have talked up my boy omac fir 2 years dont let me down

Doubt many would have anticipated this GF at the start of the week, yet alone start of the year :o. Pretty good finals series so far this year, heartbreak and upsets everywhere!
Just saying Minor Premiers are 0-5 as far as going on to win the flag
New Delhi would be first team outside the top 4 to make a GF also
:o
Destroyers Misfire as Jaguars Stun
Dublin Destroyers (21.10.136) lost to Rio de Janeiro Jaguars (23.11.149)
So this happened! The Jaguars have pulled off an almighty upset against the Minor Premiers in style with a comprehensive victory led my Finals Champion Medalist Patrick Cripps! It was a case of Murphy's law for Dublin; whatever can go wrong, did go wrong as all bar 5 players underperformed, none worse than star forward Lance Franklin. This would be a devastating and incredibly frustrating loss for the Destroyers, whom have basically just been waiting for finals to do their damage. But, it was the all-round strength of the Jaguars superbly led Patrick Cripps (an individual performance they'll never forget) that has propelled Rio into the all desired Round 23! Comisserations Dublin, but super-duper congratulations to Rio!

Ohhhhhhh SH!T! Ohhhh mercy me! IT! JUST! KEEPS! GOING! New Delhi have had to muster up a fierce score in beating the reigning premiers in what is now officially THE GREATEST TURNAROUND of a team in WXVs history, undeniably. The Tigers just kept whippin out century after century, and the Suns were straining to keep up and had to rely on Captain Rockliff to put in 120+ to grab hold of the advantage. But the 7 centurion force that was the New Delhi Tigers REFUSE to let this winning streak stop and will progress to the Grand freaking Final! They won the Wooden Spoon last year!!!! For the Suns, they're in the exact same boat as Holz; a feeling of great frustration and disappointment in falling at the last hurdle to Round 23 after a season of waiting. But they'd no more than anyone, it's who's better on the day that wins. Commisserations to the Suns, but OMG well done NDT!

Wellington Tons Well
This game followed the 10 player v 7 probability, with Wellington being well serviced by a host of players. La Plata did pretty well actually, with a host of best XV players not available for Buenos Aires.

Copacabana start New Delhi Mind Games
How much will our future senior Grand Finalists take out of this match? Not a god damn thing. But Capuchins had a mammoth 13 players take the field against the Elephant's 10, but only Rioli (106) and Maynard (85) might have got their coaches attention for next week.

It's not a certainty... not even likely yet.. but it is a chance
Looking at the current live scores, I reckon it is

kinda makes the heartbreak for NY and PNL sting that little bit more doesn't it? :'(
We we'rent good enough Daz, but it does give hope for next season!
I just looked at what we would have scored this weekend if we were still in and we would have lost to Dublin so not really heartbreak. We were just not good enough
Congrats to Rio and NDT and best of luck in the GF next weekend.
Congrats levi too strong on the day. Big effort with the injuries and best of luck in the finals.
Rio v ndt will be exciting to watch and we have a new champion. Been a very enjoyable year and for Dublin even though we won the minor just never looked our year.
Huge congrats to rico ele big effort wirh the rebuild, no disrespect to levi but I'll be cheering on ndt from chenai!!!
Hey Holz, spread the word and get the locals on board to cheer NDT! ;D
Two bottom 4 teams last year, the Grand Finalist this year! Wow.
Congrats Levi, awesome work mate
Unlucky to JRoo and Holz after big years again

Two bottom 4 teams last year, the Grand Finalist this year! Wow.
Is Patrick Cripps the next finals God?
His 3 finals so far for Rio de Janeiro are:
153 (best on ground), 118 and 124 (best on ground).
Should point out that New Delhi have now won 3 finals - and have not had a best on ground in any of them. Great team effort.
Well done NDT, don't know how you've done it, but you've done it. Amazing work and I hope you guys go all the way!!!
Also well done to Rio, another great effort. Should be an interesting GF to say the least :P
