Post by: fanTCfool on July 18, 2016, 09:01:31 PM
Only 18 days until the Olympics! You know what that means... starts with Z and ends with ika  ::)
Hopefully it doesn't overlap with the footy too much, not sure what the TZ gap is and when events will be held.
Anyone else somewhat pumped?

Can't wait, however I couldn't care about how many medals Aussies win

From what I remember from the soccer World Cup the time gaps aren't friendly to Australia

Haha yeah, just threw a little poll on the top, the 2012 Olympic thread had the same thing. Hopeful we don't go backwards really  :P
Just keen to see the world's best (albeit slightly overshadowed by drugs and whatnot) in action, Australian or otherwise.

I will watch the 100m mens final, watch some of the opening .

Ill keep an interest in the basketball and pretty much every else i might glance at if on a tv near me.

Olympics doesnt do much for me all it tells me is its 2 years to the world cup the true number 1 sporting event in the world.

Yeah this doesn't really interest me at all

The best of the best don't play in the worldwide known sports, and most of the "sports" are events that 99% of the time nobody else see's or watches except when in the Olympics

I'll watch bits and pieces for sure and keep an eye on things but it doesn't really do much for me, and this one in Rio is sounding like it has the potentially to be a real flop

Considering the living consitions aren't up to scratch and also the virus going around. The last few days after having the Aussie appartments fixed I haven't heard anything about the olympics. Very strange since other than golf and a couple of those sports this is probably the most competitive field for many events in a long time.

Since the hype is right out of this Olympics wouldn't surprise me if most of us are blown away by the quality of everything

My focus will be on particular athletes such as Usain Bolt, Mahe Drysdale (NZ single skull rowing/ defending Olympic Champion/ four time Olympian/ Melbourne born and now an enzedder...so he's like me...sort of ;) ), Mark Todd (NZ equestrian...9 time Olympian- legend) and Valerie Adams (NZ Shot Put...gold medallist Beijing and London).
I'll try to watch as many swimming and track and field events as I can and parts of the triathlon and marathon runs if possible.
Events like golf, rugby 7s and tennis are a joke at the Olympics IMO and I'll pass on them.

The Aussies entered the stadium at about 9 pm pretty early and I'm sure the Americans are in most events as us , it just looked like a bit of snub and to be honest I can't remember so few marching before

I could not give a crap about the Olympics but I thought I'd check the basketball scores. I read this

The United States looked to be in big trouble in their first game after China got out to an early 2-0 lead, but they battled back and finished with a 119-62 victory.

I couldn't stop laughing. I went to check the box scores and saw Australia also won. I'm surprised Bogut actually suited up and the starters for France are really strong with Parker, Batum, Diaw and Gobert. That's actually a pretty good scalp.

Yeah I think France have the second best team, behind the US. Certainly the best player not on the USA team, in Batum. Although they barely even used him today which was strange. Nando de Colo is a pretty sick player too.

We're up against Serbia next and then I think the USA.

The Chinese getting super defensive over the truthful words spoken by Mack Horton, their media even had to resort to the fact Australia was settled by British convicts. Like that hasn't been said before!

Glad the Aussies are backing up Mack's words :)

Agree PB - Interesting watching the comments from the Chinese - Still saying it was heart medication and that is why he had the back dated ban.
Anyway as you say great to see him being backed by Aussies and great to see Mack sticking to his convictions. 1500 will be an interesting race.

Sad to see the Joker eliminated in the tennis though,

I really want to weigh in on this whole olympics doping saga.

Firstly- props to Mack Horton for taking a hardline against doping. And it's disgusting the abuse he's copped for it. He's called a spade a spade- I don't know if it's just that the media is so controlled that the chinese don't know about his doping ban, but it's so unreasonable. To compare it to essendon, even the most ardent fans ended up just copping it.

As for his heart meds- if that's true (which personally I doubt) the IOC and WADA have stipulations in place to allow therapeutic use of otherwise illicit substances. He just needs to prove he has the condition and that the meds were his only option.

I just read an article about a russian swimmer who was banned earlier this year and called out for being a drug cheat too, her response was that she was taking a legal substance that was then banned and it happened to still be in her system. The changes to the banned substance list are released in september while they're enacted in january... most drugs would have been well cleared by then.

Basically, neither of those are valid excuses in a modern sport.

As for flowering Russia in general- they never should have been allowed to compete in this olympics. It wouldn't be fair to the clean athletes, but when you have state sponsored doping, flower them.

We're not talking about just athletics, weightlifting and tennis, we're talking about between a dozen and a couple of hundred athletes caught coping  in EACH of these sports
Athletics
Weightlifting
Wrestling
Canoeing
Cycling
Skating
Swimming
Ice Hockey
Skiing
Soccer
Rowing

Like I'm sorry, grow a backbone. The IOC was completely able to ban them but doged out. It's pathetic they're competing.

Agree 100% The Paraolympic committee has more gonads than the IOC and have banned Russia completely.  Although Russia is challenging the decision in the Sports courts.
Why are athletes such as Mack Horton and Lily King from the US coping abuse for speaking out and saying what a lot of athletes believe.

The Russians should have all been banned but singling out the Chinese dude is a bit rich when the Americans have Gatlin in there team  ::) ......  I wonder how many athletes are competing that have been caught doping , many I think.

Swimming commentary is poor at best, basil and giaan Rooney are useless, watching the relay the other day Aussies were 1st on the 1st change and then on the second Rooney bangs on how the Aussies have moved up to 4th and doing well. They went flowering backwards and all that bullshower about Australia's golden couple in the pool and neither of them got a medal, both hockey sides have been shower and on that how can the men lose 2 games win 1 and still make it thru to the finals. Tried to watch some of the judo ( well I think it was ) and can't for the life of me understand what a shower sport like that is doing in the olympics. My stand outs so far has been the boomers, skinner winning gold in the shooting and michael phelps winning his 20th and 21st gold medals, for a man who smokes cones and gets done for drink driving, has to be a serious contender for US president in the future.

I wanted to avoid that kind of comment because it can be seen as not embracing the sport for the quality of the athletes ;)

It's the fact they are really good athletes and are super fit which make them look good right?

Mahe Drysdale is an absolute champion ... stayed up late last night just to watch that race. NZ legend.
Won Bronze in the men's single scull in Beijing after suffering a severe gastrointestinal infection... vomiting for about a week in the lead up to his event and needed to be helped to an ambulance after the race.
Won Gold in London after vomiting pre race with nervousness.
And now Gold again last night at 37 years, 8 months... to become NZ's oldest ever gold medallist at an Olympic Games.

Gutted for Valerie Adams (probably NZ's most loved Olympian...was going for her third straight Gold...and sister of Steven Adams of Oklahoma City Thunder fame) for winning Silver in the Shot Put, beaten by an American having the last throw.

Lithuania didn't play up to their world ranking of number 3 but the Boomers were awesome.

Delly early nailing 3's like they were nothing, Mills then taking over and then Baynes in the 2nd half basically slam dunking every ball he had in the paint.

Bogut was good, Anderson keeps on keeping on at 36 years of age. Ingles was very good.

All in all a brilliant team performance and should (fingers crossed) be too good for either Serbia or Croatia in the Semi final which would guarantee the Boomers' their first Olympic Medal.

difficult to win a game where you have 3 times more turnovers than your opponent (something like 25+ to 8??), but then to still be in with a chance in the last 2mins ... Serbia just wanted it more and played like that the whole game, very disappointing when a national team loses mainly due to lack of effort imo ...

It's like I'm watching our worst nightmare

Hate to say it, but this is looking like a real big choke - Clearly the 2nd best team all comp but couldn't deliver when it counted  :'(

Was a terrible game by the Boomers.  They need to re-group and step up against the Spanish to get the Bronze

Amongst people that have knowledge of cricket. There'd be many people out there that were watching it that would have no idea.

It was a silly comment anyway :P

Turned on the TV at about 7:30am to get ready to watch the Boomers, and I see Chloe cross the finish line in the Pentathlon! What a legend!  ;D

Just watched the replay of the shooting/running. Turned a 45 second deficit into a 10 second winning Gold medal.  Yep what a legend and great attitude as well.

Fek that burned, officiating in the FIBA game is tedious and perplexing, it was bad for both sides...

That said there is some promise with all our best players other than Andersen being so young

Why call these soft fouls in the last 2 minutes - Really cost Oz the bronze especially the last one called blocking when he did not move so should have been a charging foul.

Anyway congratulations to all participants who made  finals and those who participated,

The fouls have been consistently perplexing mate, all games, it has tainted what was an otherwise good tournament of play
