The Thunder are facing a real fight to stay in touch with the finals at the moment. Having lost four of its past five matches and scoring progressively since Round 11, Beijing find themselves delicately placed at 10th position and 7-7. The usual "finals formula" reads that you need a 10-7 record to almost guarantee a place in finals but sometimes you can get away with 9-8, which I suppose the Thunder COULD manage finals with that, but would have to heavily rely on other results to fall their way. The Royals continue to surprise this season really; this youth policy that they enacted late last year has proven to be the correct decision, with a 6-8 record doing its supporter base proud considering their new personnel. London are in fact coming off their highest score of the year (139) against Cairo last week; which was needed as they would have lost with any other score (except Round 11) that they've post this year. As far as danger games goes, this is a big one for Beijing as London can beat most teams on its day. Surely the Thunder recover though? It did however finish last year poorly with only 2 wins in the second half of the season, so does this young team still tire? Maybe, but I'll back them this time around.
AWWWW YEAH BOIZ! Did you see that?! The Brewers top-scored last week against the ladder leaders in Mexico City, and I for one still can't really believe where it came from. But I guess when Masten, MacMillan and Talia combine for 342 points, you know the footy gods are on your side. As such, that was not only the Brewers first 150+ score for the season, but also its first 160+ score too! And really, it's about time I got some luck! The Destroyers happened to equal their worst effort of the season with a 132 last week (and loss) against PNL, which is further evidence that they're not the once unstoppables like they were last year. Having said that, watch them win the premiership... anyway, the Destroyers finally lost at Crooke Park for what would have been the first time in a long time, and I imagine they'll come out with a point to prove... sigh. I remember last year when I was about to face Dublin, the week before I decided to rest one of my gun players in preparation for the match (as I was playing the then lowly New Delhi), so I guess you could say I was hoping to have a big week against Dublin. What happened however, was that I had my best week of the season THE WEEK BEFORE I played Dublin, and Dublin had its worst week of the season THE WEEK BEFORE they played me. As such, Dublin then came out and whooped my sorry arse. THIS IS ALL TOO SIMILAR! In keeping with that weirdly similar story line, I tip the same outcome.
The Dillos place in the finals is pretty much one more win away from being secure, but what would concern it more would be trying to make a sneaky claim at the top 4! They currently sit 6th and share the same 9-5 record with the 4th placed PNL and 5th placed New York. It's unlikely that they'll end up with a better percentage than either of those teams, so it just has to win pretty much the last 3 matches to give themselves a shot at the top 4. The Tigers meanwhile are coming off an inspired victory against the third placed Jaguars which has given their previously slim shot at finals a real shot in the arm! The Tigers actually have the best percentage outside the top 4 which is basically another win on their current 7-7 record. At 9th place, there is every chance that the Tigers could make the eight with a 9-8 record, and with their remaining opponents consisting of a team lower than them, a peer, and a team above them on the ladder... it's god damn interesting times at New Delhi! A big match for two teams aspiring for greater things, I'll back the Dillos at home but give New Delhi every chance.
Last week felt like an awful, awful sense of deja vu for the Cobras. Back in Round 6, the Cobras let the Dillos back in the game very late where they came out with an inspired last quarter to pip them by 6 SC points. But last week was worse. Entering the last match, Cape Towns' Shane Savage, Jarryn Geary, Craig Bird and Blake Acres just had to score 214 points for victory, but choked heartbreakingly to score 212 points and give New York a 1 SC point victory. Ugh, you feel that one right in the chest. The Samurai on the other hand are coming off a fairly cruisey victory over Toronto which pretty much put to rest any slight fears they had at securing an unlikely wooden spoon. The Samurai have overall under-achieved this year IMO, as they've shown to be capable of much more... (*neck twitches*). These two teams currently sit together in the bottom 4, and a win to either side would give them hope at escaping the bottom 4 at seasons end. I think I actually like the Cobras here, whom have been very unlucky in the past 6 weeks not to secure another win or two.
Sandilands, Watson and the odd injury aside, the Saints have easily been the luckiest team of the year. They gotta be surely? They've scored the 12th most amount of points so far this year, compared to conceding the second fewest to be sitting 7th and 8-6; two wins away from securing a place in finals. Even take last weeks win against the 14-man Spetsnaz, had Moscow had another player, they probably would have won! However, with Mexico City (#1 on points ladder), Berlin (#5) and PNL (#8) to come, it's unlikely. The Suns meanwhile, have every right to feel pretty pissed off about last week, as the score they posted up would have beaten Berlin EVERY OTHER WEEK OF THE YEAR! At least though, that they amazingly retained their #1 mantle on the ladder as both the second and third placed teams also lost, so its not all bad. Still, that was the opportunity to almost seal the minor premiership and not have to have it decided in Round 17 against Dublin. I fully expect Mexico City to put Christchurch to the sword here.
The Spetsnaz would pretty much just want the season to end, if we're honest. Having only 14 players to "choose" from last week and still come up only 22 SC points short was just the cherry on the suspension-ravaged cake that has been 2016. Still, what a revelation has Sam Docherty been this year? Or how fantasy relevant the amazing Jesse Hogan has been? It'll feel at lot better at the end of the season when Heppell & Hooker come back. Meanwhile, the Reindeers are coming off arguably their best win of the season against giant Dublin last week, which was a huge boon for their top 4 aspirations. In fact, that win pretty much earned the respect of the competition as a top 4 team if you ask me, despite sitting 8th on the points ladder. Ever since Round 8, the Reindeers have just been a completely different team averaging 144 since! As such, you'll have to tip the Reindeers especially if Moscow have less than 15 players to pick from again.
Involving a team that was in my MOTR last week for the same reason, this clash is my MATCH OF THE ROUND! The Islanders are coming off in what I coined was a season defining game for them; unfortunately as the losing team. Sitting at 11th and 7-7 with an inferior percentage to every team above it (except Seoul whom they're marginally ahead of), they'll likely have to win their remaining games if they are to make the finals. Considering they'll go in favourites against Tokyo and Toronto in rounds 16 and 17, this game is literally their last chance. New York are coming off an INCREDIBLY fortunate 1 SC point win last week; which was a vital result to assist their claim at a top 4 spot. They currently sit 5th and 9-5, and although with a much inferior percentage to the 4th placed Reindeers (with the same win/loss), are still every chance at making the top 4. It really is quite incredible though, they the Revs have lost to the bottom two teams and almost lost to another bottom 4 team last week. Lucky for them, these teams won't be in the finals I suppose! As PNL is likely to go 2-1 in the last 3 games, New York have to win all 3 of their remaining games to make the four, so this clash is important for them. Going back the to Islanders, two weeks ago I would have thought this would be a likely win to New York, but all of a sudden they're every chance (thanks to some New York injuries). If those injuries persist, I'll say the Islanders. If not, the Revs.
The Jaguars let a golden opportunity to make claim to a home qualifying final go last week. With both Mexico City & Dublin losing last week, a win would have seen them now share the same win/loss record and although with a massively inferior percentage than those two teams, one of them will lose again in Round 17 and give the Jaguars the opportunity to take the second spot in the ladder. But forget about that scenario now, thanks to an in-from New Delhi and Rio's third lowest score of the season. The Sands were desperately unlucky not to win against the Royals last week, as that effort would have beaten them 12 out of 14 times this year. That win would have also likely made them avoid the spoon, instead that struggle continues against the third placed Jaguars. Although, it is interesting to note that the Sands would have beaten the Jaguars AND Dublin last week, so is it all that unlikely all of a sudden? Well, yeah, but still! I'll say the Jaguars, but they'd want to be careful. Oh, and before I forget, the Jaguars would be DEVASTATED that champion midfielder Gary Ablett has been ruled out of the rest of the season. That would just be a huge blow and dent into their confidence in finals. So who replaces the all mighty GAJ?
It wasn't a headline grabbing performance from the Wolves last week; quite a regulation performance from both the Samurai and Wolves resulting in quite a regulation outcome. But they would have been sweating on how close Cairo came to victory last week, as that would have made avoiding the spoon much harder. Although their opponents have a lot more to play for at the moment, it's interesting to note that Toronto's best (128) would have beaten the Magpies five times this year... so go in BELIEVING! As mentioned, Seoul have set themselves up beautifully to make the finals off an vital win against the Islanders last week. Sitting 8th and 8-6 but with the worst percentage in the top 12, a 10-7 record is a must and two remaining opponents in the bottom four, they'd be likely to achieve that magic win/loss record. Still, lose here and Seoul's season takes a 180 degree turn... don't take the Wolves lightly! I reckon they won't, so Seoul for me.
Dublin is in massive trouble Purp,
wouldn't be surprised if you got up. 4 best 15 out is killing me. Also I cant captain Sloane.

Ok so your facing Captain Sloane now.
Also your boy Neville Jetta who is coming off 82 and 87.
Massive game for us this week vs Pacific
It's no secret that our past month has been nothing short of woeful. We've got plenty of men down, but am hoping to regain a couple this week
That said, The Bont and Titch scare me and coupled with HGA Pacific go in as favourites. We'll need everything to go right if we're a chance here
Griff returns from a 6 week injury during the useless bye, scores a ton, does his hamstring and is then out for another 3 weeks that matter. He's played just 44% of the season and on top of that turns 30 in a month. Zorko had better put up some 40's soon or else I'll cry.

Just read that Griff has been ruled out for another 3-4 weeks, so you'll probably be without him in the finals
More great news for us with Mundy fighting to get right by Friday after being concussed on the weekend. When it rains it pours!

Finals? HAHA!
This is the Islanders last chance of making finals. 6th highest scoring team, but 1st in points against. Could say we've been a touch unlucky.
Hopefully one of our big men get named, so we don't have to play an OOP in Ruck. Also the return of Michael Barlow would be quite handy. :)

The WXV rising star has to be down to Caleb Daniel and Connor Blakely. Connor took 3 games to find his feet at AFL level and in the 7 matches since he's averaging 87. Daniel's 77 as a forward (for now) is pretty handy. Other have shown glimpses but none have been as consistently good as these two.

Mills should win it in real life IMO, but hard to make a case for him in Worlds due to his midfield statues unless he has a super end to the season. He is averaging 83 over the past 6 though, so not far off Blakely and has certainly played more games!

Just had a look at TAB and Daniels is the favourite, and Mills is now 2nd favourite crunched into $3.50!
Blakely right up there for WXV
Mills should win it in real life IMO, but hard to make a case for him in Worlds due to his midfield statues unless he has a super end to the season. He is averaging 83 over the past 6 though, so not far off Blakely and has certainly played more games!
Yeah I agree - I think Mills should win it too in real life
Guys like Weits and Petracca have had way too many quiet games and shouldn't win the award off 2-3 good games. Mills might not light it up, but he is really consistent especially for a first year player and gets my vote, but Daniels is right behind him
IT IS SIR DANIEL OF CALEB, NOT SIR DANIELS. ARGHHHHHHHHH.
not impressed by him, almost 1.5 years old then Weits and done less on the football field. Shame about the shoulder or Weits would have this in the bag.
bascially locking in an AA and Captaincy for Weits
How does age have anything to do with the rising star award other then eligibility......

Because i like alot of people do give some thought into the difference in an actual first year player and other eligible rising star players.
Its why i have mills over daniel.

everyweek its depressing putting my best 15 out there, then taking alot of names off and putting rookies on the field. At least give me murphy back.
Injury list mounting:
Roughead
Yarran
Murphy
Hansen
Currie
Byrne
Omac
You've got 2 injuries to your 15 - Rough and Murph
The rest is just depth
We've got 4-5 of our 15 missing! :'(

um Yarran is my D3.
Hansen actually was my D4. If he was healthy he would be playing.
Currie when he plays would be my utility (given Roughy Yarran out)
Forgot about Schoenemakers but he is my F5.
so 3-4 of my 15 missing and then 2-3 immediate back ups missing.
my depth in Grundy Jetta, Collins, Weits (burning out as a 18 year old) is out on the field.
Fyfe, Hibberd, Liberatore, Michael Johnson...
As I said, pressure is on you Holz ;)
Updated streaks

Interesting to note, that 3 of these teams have gone 2-2, and the other two 3-1...
Team | Points Scored |
Mexico City Suns | 648 |
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars | 602 |
Dublin Destroyers | 584 |
Pacific Islanders | 573 |
Berlin Brewers | 572 |
PNL the only team to have an undefeated month! Whereas you can see the desperate charges from Seoul & New Delhi to make finals
Team | Games Won |
Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers | 4-0 |

Pacific always seem to be in this streak, and the points scored streak... pretty unlucky to be outside the eight! Whereas it now starts to become clear why Beijing have struggled of late
Team | Points Scored Against |
Beijing Thunder | 582 |
Pacific Islanders | 576 |
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars | 573 |

The Saints & Thunder the odd-ones-out here; they gotta lift immediately to make finals.

Actually ended up putting him on field when Lobbe didn't get the recall haha. More than happy with the 87 even after his cracking first half. Surely showed enough to keep the #1 status for Swans and PNL for the near future at least 8).

Aw, I could have put him in the Leadership group at the expense of Fyfe, but then, because Fyfe would then be out of it, I couldn't name a non-playing player in my leadership group as captain and therefore loophole Burgoyne's score :-X
BUT DAMN IT! I could have totally loopholed him in champions league! >:(

Jags need to do all they can to stay up near the top of the ladder now. Showing faith in the lads.
And updating the minor Premierships....
AAP Alliance
A victory to Mexico City over Christchurch almost gives them the AAP Alliance flag again for the 3rd time (though Rio can still catch up on percentage).
Christchurch needs to annihilate Mexico City, and hope results go its way, if it is any chance of taking the title out
Rio de Janeiro would be hoping Christchurch upsets Mexico City, because if it does, Rio would just need to beat Cairo and Toronto (I think) to take the flag. Even if Mexico City win, they could still theoretically catch up on percentage.
Buenos Aires a mathematical chance, but isn't going to happen
EurAsia
A win over Moscow secures the EurAsian flag for the 1st time for PNL. A loss would leave the fate in the hands of others....
New Dehli are in a surprisingly good position. If PNL lose to Moscow, they have the percentage to take it out if they can beat Buenos Aires and Beijing well, and hold off Dublin's charge.
Dublin need Moscow to beat PNL, and need to make sure they hold off others in percentage. Dublin can still do it!
Beijing's percentage hurts them a bit, but again need Moscow to beat PNL, and just win by as much as they can.
Europe
This is wide open. All barring London a chance to win this really. Even Moscow! Who play PNL, Dublin and Berlin in the final 3 matches, could theoretically win them all and take the title.
PNL, with a win over Moscow, goes a long way to sercuring the title. But not for sure. Dublin and Berlin could catch them on percentage.
The Dublin v Berlin match is basically an elimination for Europe. Destroyers still a big shot, but Berlin - who is not only the only team that has never won Europe, but has come last each year - would be desperate to avoid last place again.
Americas
No action this week.
Rio de Janeiro just needs to beat Buenos Aires in the Rhythm Cup to take out the Americas for the first time, though even a loss could see them win it.
Mexico City need Buenos Aires to beat Rio de Janeiro fairly well to take out the Americas for the 3rd time.
Asia
No action this week.
New Delhi and Beijing will play each other later in the year, the winner will take out Asia. For Beijing it will be the 1st time, for New Delhi it would be an incredible 3rd time.
Africonia
Has been over for a while, with Pacific taking out its first Africonia title
Great read oz!
I'm flowering over being the Europe wooden spooners >:(

@Cape Town, I see you missed naming your gun JPK :-X
A couple of options for you to conisder:
1) Name a team without Sydney and Hawks players; or
2) Take a strike for not submitting a team (no penalty now, but do it again and a premiership point is deducted), and get this team based off preferences (note that only the Syd/Haw players are locked in this team so far):
D: Brodie Smith, Matt Dea, Jarryn Geary, Lachlan Plowman
M: Josh P Kennedy (C), Lachie Hunter (VC), Dom Tyson, Darcy Parish
R: Mark Blicavs
F: Tom Hawkins, Craig Bird, Peter Wright, Touk Miller
I: Callum Mills, Dean Kent
E: Gary Rohan, Blake Acres, Nicholas Graham
I know I've probably been inconsistent, but shouldn't it be either name a team without Hawks or Sydney players OR get a team named entirely on preferences? Otherwise a little double dipping...

We did something like this last year... I assumed they could select a team around the locked players. I'll double check that round now, but if I didn't allow them too, then I won't now, but I assume I did :-X
Yeah, you're probably right oz, but I did allow it last year, so I better be consistent with that and not change rules mid-season. We'll review it EOS when we review all the rules again

...you have two options:
1) Choose a team without Sydney and Port players
2) Accept Strike 1 (no punishment, but Strike 2 is a loss in a premiership point), in which case I name a team based on preferences as shown below, but only the Syd/Port players are locked so you are free to choose the rest of your team:

Wow we can't get any luck this year.. Laird a late out for our must win game. :(

Number of times named in the best (i.e. scored 100 or more in WXV Seniors)
As a bit of background, overall, 27% of senior scores are a 100 or more.
Player, Times 100 or more, Total Games, % times score 100 or more
S Pendlebury 76 87 87%

That's right... Pendlebury has scored 76 centuries (10 more than next best in JPK) from his 87 games, at a whopping strike rate of 87% (5% more than next best Ablett). I think Pendlebury has justified his #1 selection in the initial draft, but looks likely never to win a Jim Stynes medal.
A few odd stats... Sam Iles made the best players list 60% of the time he played (3 from 5 matches), while Nick Smith has played an astonishing 61 matches without ever scoring a 100 (the next best Sutcliffe with 61 matches). Though Shaun Atley's 3 centuries from 67 matches isn't great either.

No, I spend it with family and friends. How I spend my day
AT work is an entirely different question....

Haha, nice!
The games-by-club is my favourite stat
And yes folks, Colin Garland HAS played that many games for me at THAT average.
He joins Dylan Grimes, Brad Crouch, Jake Spencer and Michael Hibberd as the only players that have lasted the whole 5 years for me :-X
A 71 average for a D4 isn't so bad. At least he's contributing and I doubt he cost much. Lots of first and second round WXV picks have done worse!
Uhhh, so annoyed I forgot about posting a team. Just haven't been on the internet in a while :(
Quote from: Purple 77 on July 15, 2016, 11:12:31 AM
Definitely taking the team posted. Cheers for the leniency Purps :)

Some would say taking the C off Gawn is a bad idea; and history has shown it has been. BUT! Hickey... *ahem*, nullified Gawn quite well the last time they played, and with Bugg not playing for melbourne, I've likened the captaincy to Jack Steven, and I actually think Viney might do some damage too.
Cheers Purps, I really needed a big score from Gawny this week in SC! ;D

Yeah, that might be the final nail in the coffin.
Laird and now Barlow - bad luck guys. I know the feeling
Meanwhile our mids have been pretty damn good too which is good for us, but might make things very difficult for you
Pretty sure Hill was like 21 at half time, then has a monster second half to be the highest scorer on the ground!

We're first in points against by a fair way so you're looking at a big score man, haha.
If anyone wants to get some form back, line up against Pacific!

Need to trade in some lockdown defenders Jay! Stop teams scoring so easily against you :P
@Moscow, no E3 named. On remaining list preferences, you just had one AFL listed emergency; Wayne Milera. He is now your E3
After Friday Night:
Thunder & Royals are headed straight for an awful match, with co-captain Neale and Captain Hannebery setting that tone.
Cape Town & Tokyo meanwhile are quite the opposite!
And Danger singlehandedly puts up a lead over two Toronto players

Laird and now Barlow - bad luck guys. I know the feeling
Meanwhile our mids have been pretty damn good too which is good for us, but might make things very difficult for you
We're first in points against by a fair way so you're looking at a big score man, haha.
If anyone wants to get some form back, line up against Pacific!
Need to trade in some lockdown defenders Jay! Stop teams scoring so easily against you :P
Haha I think you're right. Purps, trade us Daniel Talia!!

Everybody's a chance vs New York up until the final match of the round
Have said it all year - we're so inconsistent. Our midfield has been fantastic, but then take a look at the rubbish in our forward line :'(
Tomlinson replaces Laird right?
So it's 1108 plus Tomlinson, Gaff and Smith vs 1036 plus TMac, Hurn, JJK and Harmes
This one's going down to the wire! We really need all our guys to perform well today to get us over the line

Ahh flower, I forgot
We're stuffed :-[
Really is game of the round! Reckon Tmac + JJK can throw up anything so if they go huge can make up for it.
Gaff flying, JJK struggling
Game over I think :(
C'mon Gaffy keep going. Clinging on to our season! :-X

How are we still a chance in this? Gun recruit Gaff keeping the dream alive.

Why wouldn't you be a chance? OK you had Barlow injured but he still scored more than all our forwards LOL
Laird out doesn't change much because we've got several best 15 players out anyway
Pacific 1236 with Smith, Tomlinson and HGA (38)
New York 1155 with TMac and Harmes
If JJK had of gone 80+ we'd be a chance because TMac and Harmes are going well, but 39 from JJK and the rest of our forwards besides Harmes have cost us
Having Picken's 107 on the bench hurts :'(
Well done Pacific
Purps lack of faith in Gawn punished again
Scully tagging
Rich getting tagged
SMartin cops another big hit
Conigs needs to go big or this could be close
Toronto/Seoul coming down to the wire! Sam Reid keeping us in it.
Very close between Buenos Aires & New Delhi! Basically every Bewick point is worth 2 as he will be the Dillos HGA
Yeah. Had I captained Gawn, Mexico City would have been eliminated from World Idol.
I feel like there is a lesson to be learnt here, but nup! Not sinking in...
Thunder keep season alive
This was an important win for Beijing, and it was especially good to put in a morale boosting performance. London pretty much did as expected in the meantime, but a better Hannebery score would improve their final output dramatically

Defining New Delhi Victory
Big win for the Tigers this one! Especially since a certain upset (to be disclosed) would have made a loss here catastrophic for their finals hopes. But first Rio, now Buenos Aires... that could be the season defining moment for the Tigers when they look back at this season. The Dillos meanwhile, SHOULD be fine, but say goodbye to top 4 aspirations basically.

Tactical Strike pays off for Cobras
A win on HGA brings a sense of "getting one back" for the Cobras, with that taking of a strike to enable access to their Syd/Haw players paying off. Lucky Cobras, unlucky Samurai, especially seeing that Parker could have easily won them this match with stock standard 120.

Christchurch Curse Continues
Unbelievable. Not only were the Saints lucky that a host of Suns went down both BEFORE and DURING the match, they also happened to legitimately claim this win with a great score. This was the Saints first 150+ score of the season; following the Suns loss against Berlin with their first 150+ score of the season :-X gotta work on that defence! Disastrous result for minor premiership aspirations though, but not over yet!

A good performance from Cairo wasn't enough to trouble Rio in the end, whom would still be having sleepless nights embarking on a finals series without GAJ.
Still.....

Shanghai Storm (1.10.16) lost to Imperial Princes (12.7.79)
:o Serious lack of depth!
We won the reserves premiership last year so had heaps of depth but as you can see by our improvement in the seniors this year, we traded a lot of that to improve the quality of our starting xv. Which has been worth it. Doesn't help the amount of injuries we've had coming in to the backend of the season.

very fitting that Walters and Dixon who were sent off from Dublin to Berlin caused the damage.
Geez Berlin is an easy team to beat 5-0, even took them out when I got the spoon.
As promised.
