This round holds a special significance; there isn't another time where multiple coaches can have an genuine interest behind one team taking on another! I proudly present the 5th installment of our annual epic clash!
Representative Round, AFL Round 14 scores from North Melbourne, Fremantle, Brisbane, GWS, Geelong, Hawthorn + AFL Round 15
Home Team | Away Team | Venue | Head-to-Head |
EurAsia | AAP Alliance | Melbourne Cricket Ground | 2 v 2 |
The coaches of the AAP Alliance and EurAsia each year are the coaches who so far rank number 1 in their respective groups, as ranked below:
EurAsiaDublin Destroyers
Paris Nice Lyon Reindeers
Beijing Thunder
Moscow Spetnaz
Seoul Magpies
New Delhi Tigers
Berlin Brewers
London Royals
Tokyo Samurai
AAP AllianceMexico City Suns
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars
New York Revolution
Christchurch Saints
Buenos Aires Armadillos
Pacific Islanders
Cape Town Cobras
Cairo Sands
Toronto Wolves
Which means, for the second year in a row, we congratulate Holz (Dublin) and JROO8 (Mexico City) for the honour of steering EurAsia and the AAP Alliance to great victory, and crippling humiliation.
Hosted at the magnificent
MCG, the past four installments has seen the AAP Alliance victors in 2012 (CrowsFan) and 2014 (Nails), and EurAsia in 2013 (Ringo) and 2015 (Holz). Last year was easily the best encounter which saw EurAsia (25.18.168) def AAP Alliance (25.17.167) in a thrilling come from behind victory, which eventually saw AAP Alliance player Kade Simpson falling 8 SC points short as the last man standing.
THE HYPE BOYZ! THE HYPE!
The questions are obvious for both sides:
Which ruck does Holz field? Does he succumb to bias and pick Todd Goldstein or EurAsia's number 2 averaging player in Max Gawn? He'll probably do both, as he fielded two ruckmen last year. In fact, 4 ruckmen played last year in total and they combined for 573 points! But anyway, I expect the bias to name Goldstein as R1, but the question has gotta be asked.
Should the Worlds #1 player so far this year in Dangerfield be an auto captain? Sure he has gone nuts in the last two weeks, but can humans really do it 3 times in a row?
Who does JROO captain? Of course, he has the amazing consistently awesome Scott Pendlebury to choose from (Worlds #2 player so far this year), or does he go with his own Heath Shaw (World #3 player so far this year)? Or should he go with the tried and tested, 3 time Jim Stynes medalist Gary Ablett Jnr? IHe'll be sure to see who each of these players are up against in the AFL, as the decision could decide the result.
The AAP Alliance captaincy choice is especially important, as they have only 5 of the top 22 averaging players so far this year. Should JROO take a left field option like, a player with a mediocre average but high ceiling like Dom Tyson? Steven Motlop? Mark Blicavs? Blicavs did win the AAP Alliance medal last year and also captained them. But JROO might have to look to left field, as the EurAsian firepower is deep this year, but hey, EurAsia were underdogs iirc last year, and they still managed the win thanks to: high ceiling players firing.
Who will win? I think I like the men from EurAsia purely because they boast 17 of the top 22 averaging players. But, the captaincy choice is crucial, and with the
ROLLING LOCKOUT each team basically two shots at getting it right. This match will be a ripper, so be sure to get about it!
@Holz & JROO, I'll send you a PM tomorrow with all the players you can pick and how they've been going.

This may be the year I cant play the Euroasian Destroyers.
not that many deserving a spot.
Goldy Selwood Sloane Rance Dmart
And we all know that Goldy is playing R1. Gawn can play on the utility spot.
Rocky C, GfloweringG
Congrats JROO and Holz.
Now Holz, lets be honest, we all know that if you really want to win this, you need big Stef at R1
JROO, Karen shall be supplying oranges for the boys at half time, as we don't have anyone out on the park that's any good :P
However, you are free to take your pick of Beams, Adams, Higgins for loopholing purposes :P

my issue is who from GWS goes big.
Conigs Shiel Ward are all up there.
I could push out Treloar but he is there for safety.
Congis Shiel Ward too up and down.
Steven v Treloar was the tough one as Steven is all over the place. If i could loophole him I would do, thats why I have Selwood on the bench. I dont trust him on field.
I have considered Sloane over Treloar

What other defenders have we got available Holz?
Also - not sure what the rules are with this one, will probably need Purps to answer - are only traditional team formats available this week? Otherwise I would say go with an attacking formation Holz ;)

Still kinda laughing that Talia is in consideration :P but a 97 average in the past month is to not be taken for granted though!

Better check the loopholes. Gibbs plays in the second week of this so he'd be better on the interchange, then swapped out if your emergency fires.

North Melbourne players locked!
Don't forget to pick a C and VC Holz!
EurAsia
Goldstein is the one EurAsian in action at the moment. A well known Dublin Destroyer, he is currently the 8th highest averaging player in Worlds (2nd highest ruck) and is known for having a HUGE ceiling. A big match from Goldy will do wonders for EurAsia's prospects.
AAP Alliance
None in this match! But they will get a glimpse of Rory Laird for next week.

Last year's epic clash saw a whopping 16 centurions out of the 30 that took to the park. So really, Goldstein's 99 is kinda average; EurAsia would have been hoping for more from its *cough* number one ruckman.

Dammit Zorko! Just when Beijing get's (what I assume are) our first couple of representatives!
At least Lachie Neale is still there reppin' Jing 8) #ItsAJingThing
Fremantle players will be locked in soon!
EurAsia
Lachie Neale puts on the EurAsian outfit tonight! He is one member of a very memorable midfield quartet from Beijing and has really taken a step up this year. Neale is currently the 7th highest averaging player in Worlds (5th highest mid) and has scored 138+ three times this year; a ceiling worthy of his EurAsian representation. After a solid/OK start from ruckman Goldstein, EurAsia would love to have another score in that vicinity.
AAP Alliance
Michael Barlow is the first to take up arms for the Alliance; he proves to be SOMEWHAT of an unknown, as he has been in and out of the Pacific Islanders team and overall probably a bit of a disappointing recruit for them, considering they forked over two high draft picks for him. Barlow is currently the 48th highest averaging player in Worlds (7th highest forward), and is coming off his highest score of the year last week of 168. Can he do it again?
Micky Barlow did his bit! 8)

HAHAHAHAHA!

After Fremantle:
Neale, like Goldstein, probably did just average in the end. Despite having basically 200 from 2, this is not the start the EurAsian's were hoping for from 2 top 10 averaging players.
Meanwhile, Michael Barlow served the Alliance well with a solid 119. These are the kind of scores each team would like to have from all of its players, so Barlow has done both the Islanders and Alliance proud!

Big win Barlow outscoring Neale
Brisbane players will be locked in soon!
EurAsia
The Zorko withdrawal is a big loss; as he was the 10th highest averaging player in Worlds and the number 1 forward in the competition! Without the Beijing super forward, EurAsia have no representatives in this game, but will get a glimpse at his replacement in Jack Riewoldt for next week.
AAP Alliance
The Alliance have a brought in a big gun for this match; JROO's own Tom Rockliff. He is the only one in this game but one that has the potential to put EurAsia to the sword. Although he is just the 37th highest averaging player in Worlds so far this year; his average has suffered from a couple of injury affected games. But, since he has come back from his most recent injury, he has averaged 146 from 3 games, which included a HUGE score of 204. That is why I suppose he is the Alliance's VC, as he could destroy EurAsia if loopholed. You could almost say he is there most important player in this epic clash!
GWS players will be locked in soon!
EurAsia
Only Seoul's Nick Haynes fronts up in the next game. To be honest, I was a little surprised to see him named as EurAsia's E4, but when you look at his form (averaging 85 as a defender), it starts to make a little sense! It's entirely likely that Hayne will remain onff the field, but should the 129th highest averaging player in Worlds (20th highest defender) from Seoul replicate his 101 effort in Round 10, then he gives something for coach Holz to consider loopholing.
AAP Alliance
Following the Alliances' introduction of gun mid Tom Rockliff, they follow him up with someone even better! Mexico City's Heath Shaw has been an absolute star this season; the third highest averaging player in the comp and the number 1 defender. You could say he would feel a little peeved at not having the captaincy handed over to him, given that his ceiling has reached as high as 203 this season, but regardless, he has the potential to really hurt the EurAsians. The Alliance also have Cairo's Shane Mumford listed as their second emergency, and the comp's 73rd highest averaging player (5th highest ruck) could prove to be a very handy loophole option if called upon. Although Mumford's 2016 ceiling is only as high as 117, a repeat of that effort would make coach JROO stop and think about dropping Blicavs (marginally ahead of Mumford at 71st highest), so his performance is just as important.
These are great write ups purps
After Brisbane:
Rockliff really let the Alliance down tbh. Sure, a 100 is OK, but he could have served them much better.
And I forgot about Rio's Mitch Robinson! But unfortunately he went down early to injury, and won't come on as he is eligible for the sub rule.

Haynes was easily my favourite pick up of the summer, love the way he plays!
Geelong players will be locked tonight
EurAsia
PNL's Corey Enright & Seoul's Patrick Dangerfield are next in line for EurAsia, whom would be wanting a big score or two REALLY soon. Corey Enright (12th highest averaging defender) has been a stalwart for PNL and Worlds in general really. With 6 centuries to his name already this year, EurAsia would be needing another one as a bare minimum and would ideally like his most recent score of 129. But, it's Patrick Dangerfield that is the big one here. The Worlds number 1 averaging player is been in IMMENSE form for basically all of the year, but particularly in the last two weeks where he has scored 402 points! That's flowering crazy. But, coach Holz is on the safe side here with his precious star, naming him as VC just in case he fails to fire. But this is the guy that could destroy the Alliance.
Also waiting on the emergency list is Holz' own Joel Selwood, whom sits as the 7th highest player this year (5th best mid) and pretty pissed off he didn't at least make the bench. But this coach is a cautious one, ready to pounce on a loophole at a moments notice. Selwood has averaged 140.33 in the last 3 weeks, so he could have a huge say in the result yet.
AAP Alliance
The Alliances' 4th player and Mexico City's 3rd, Jimmy Bartel sits comfortably amongst his peers as the 7th highest averaging defender so far this year. Bartel is coming off 4 straight centuries at the moment and is primed to go for a 5th and maintain this early lead over EurAsia. Like a few of the players already discussed, Bartel is coming off his highest score of the year of 130; a score the Alliance would love right now.
The other member of the alliance is last years' AAP Alliance Medallist Mark Blicavs. The current Cobra and 4th highest averaging ruck in the comp is a proven performer on the biggest of stages, and despite performing a little below his 2015 standard, still has 5 scores 115+ which proves he could yet again have a say in the result. It would be quite an effort to replicate last years 150, but hey, you never know!

It's entirely likely that Hayne will remain onff the field, but should the 129th highest averaging player in Worlds (20th highest defender) from Seoul replicate his 101 effort in Round 10, then he gives something for coach Holz to consider loopholing.
Haynes was easily my favourite pick up of the summer, love the way he plays!
Screwed about was supposed to change haynes to williams. Williams 85 at half time :(
Shoulda played Conigs Holz
Wait holz named Marley Williams to loop hole? He should have chosen Zac and believed in him. 141 and was removed from the team!! Whyyyyyy
Wait hold on.
I think Purps assumed Holz chose Marley Williams as the D4 instead of Zac, which I assume Holz was choosing (as asked it a few days ago and said I assume it's Zac). Then he talks about Zac/Haynes and who should go on bench (since obviously both are GWS).
So may have to clarify with Holz, but yeah may be a MAJOR mixup there since Purps assumed it was Marley who has been nowhere near top form/back from injury compared to Zac who was a top 12 defender this season.

Hold up it is zach.
I thought i last minute changed him out to someone else and put someone else on like talia. Then forgot to change haynes to williams.
I didnt even know marley was pnl.
If i was loopholing i would have had a premo from next week like i did with jroo buddy.

I'd just like to mention that is most likely Zac Williams from us and not Marley Williams :P.

Needs more NDT Holz
looked at him but dont want to play an injured guy, im not sure he is 100% over it.
Do you guys think i should put williams on bench and then drop Haynes. If williams is no good then i put in Talia.
Wouldn't be Marley considering he would only play next week, so proof it was Zac?

Could have played conigs ward and shiel. Hey at least we got 141 from williams.
Ah yep, zach makes more sense.
I was focusing on Marley at the time :P

Williams smashes shaw and bartel who would have thought
Oh, dear. It all went to hell for the Alliance last night.
JROO's own Heath Shaw and Jimmy Bartel combined for just 100 points in a display that would have been equally embarrassing as it was pathetic, seeing as they shat all over the honour of representing the alliance. Even last year's AAP Alliance medalist and Cobra Mark Blicavs was poor, with his 78 a shadow of his 2015 performance.
Furthermore, Seoul's Patrick Dangerfield was serviceable without being his amazing recent self, but it was PNL's Zac Williams that stole the show! These are the kind of performances that wins games!
As a result, EurAsia have bolted out in front with a lead that is gonna be so very hard to catch. Players MUST stand up for the Alliance!
Both teams also have teasing loophole options... will be interesting to see if the coaches claim them!

I would have had bartel on the bench with the E but would have started shaw.
Boyd never dishes up that shower. Dunno why he didn't get a gig.
Next year there should be 3 Saints down back instead of 3 Suns. Boyd, McVeigh and Montagna.
Hawthorn players will be locked in soon
EurAsia
Emergency Jack Gunston is the only hawk from EurAsia; the Dublin forward is currently the 15th highest averaging forward and just seems to exude a level of "certainty" every week for coach Holz. With a 2016 ceiling that has reached as high as 127, Gunston looms as a great potential loophole option and to further inflict pain on the Alliance.
AAP Alliance
The Alliance really need someone to step up in a big way; and that's just to get back in this match. They only have New Yorker Josh Gibson as an emergency in this match, but the 7th highest averaging defender has a MAMMOTH ceiling. In Round 2 this year he scored 191, and has further scores of 123, 118 and 121 already to his name. Gibson could prove to be a crucial loophole player; the Alliance need him to stand up.
Sam Mitchell with a nice 152 going to waste.
What's this bit of info that we're all going to be pumped about? If I die in my sleep tonight I'll be so annoyed that I never found out.

Ah, thank you for these stats bro!
*steals them for later date*
Gee, the Alliance would have loved GAJ's score today, but unfortunately will have to wait until next week for his contribution :-X
Gunston & Gibson both crack the tons as emergencies, does Holz and JROO loophole? What do you think coaches?
And remember, it is still a rolling lockout, so keep suggesting players you think could win the match for your side!

I like how we went from 0 the first two seasons to 1 rep then 4 last season :D. Probably have 3 this season, which should have been 4 if Holz trusted in Shiel ;). Still got Pridda so you know you want to.
Huge props to Enright and Zac going well in the backline!
Alrighty, I feel like I've teased this out enough.
Announcement from the Admin
For four straight years, I have had the honour of hosting the WXVs Awards Ceremony; the home of the prestigious Jim Stynes Medal. Normally, the demographic has seen me host the awards, but have ossie85 supply the stats. In the first two years especially, I had the excess time and energy to go pretty big in the awards night, but since being admin, it's been a purely text driven event. It was still an awesome event, don't get me wrong and I'd happily keep doing it... but I couldn't keep ignoring some of the graphical prowess of one particular coach.
So, I've talked it over with him, and I'll be handing over the responsibility of hosting the WXVs Awards to another coach, because I'm just really curious to see what he'll do with it. Curious, but really quite excited! And I have a feeling everyone else will be too. So now, I'll be the one supplying the stats, and the coach hosting the awards night is none other than the author of Jag Mag, the designer of guernseys and the King of Gifs himself!
Levi!
I have a feeling this could very well be the best and most prestigious WXVs Awards night ever, a real high class event. So be sure to start getting your affairs in order! The date of the ceremony is yet to be confirmed, but I'd imagine it will be in the lead up to the WXVs Grand Final.

If Steven goes bang on the bench then Gawny could be dropped

tentative team
Eurasian Destroyers
Def: Docherty (Moscow), Rance (Dublin), Enright (PNL), Williams (PNL)
Mid: Danger (Seoul), Hannebery (London), Neale (Beijing), Steven (Berlin)
Ruck: Goldstein (Dublin)
Fwd: Zorko (Beijing), Martin (Dublin), Merrett (PNL), Franklin (Dublin)
Util: Gawn (Berlin), Treloar (Dublin),
Bench: Selwood (Dublin) , Sidey (NDT), Gunston (Dublin), Haynes (Seoul),
ok its time to bank some scores.
Out Jroo (even though he is in form)
In Dane Swan PNL Reindeers
so thats Gunston 105 locked in.
Out: Treloar (Dubliner :( again)
In: Matthew Scharenberg Moscow Spetsnaz
so thats Selwood 106 locked in
We have the lead so no need to take any gambles.
now the question is do we bank Dangers 110. If Ablett doesnt go huge I think we should.
Didn't realise Sloane was in that good form
139 114 145
Out Steven in Sloane.
droping Sidey from the bench and sticking on Steven.
If he goes big then Gawny could be dropped.
and while you're at it, you should be dropping Rance for Howe to be honest Holz
Am I blind or was Jroo not even in the team to be dropped for Swan?
Pfft, Gawny should be captaining Holz ;) he's no Goldstein.
Steven v Gold Coast.. your funeral ;)
Also, I'm going to Melbourne this weekend, so I won't be able to update... anything, until Monday night.
If anyone wanted to assume the role of "updater" from Friday night onwards, feel free! Otherwise don't worry about it :)
Which reminds me, Gawn will go especially big coz I'll be there coaching him from the stands :P

he is on the bench so we might switch him in.
West Coast and Essendon players are locked in soon!
EurAsia
PNL's own Zachary Merrett fronts up for the EurAsian forces; in fact, he is the 3rd Reindeer! Merrett is the 31st highest averaging player so far this year (4th highest forward) and really, is one of the best young guns you could want on your team at this stage. "Zerrett's" two high scores this year read 131 & 130, so you could say he is more consistent that team destroying, but EurAsia don't need crazy scores at the moment; just his consistency.
AAP Alliance
The Alliance are just the opposite; they need the crazy scores, and a few of them too. Enter; New York's Josh J Kennedy. This guy can go MAMMOTHLY big; highlighted by how he scored 170+ a few times last year, and has a 180 to his name this year. With his last 3 scores reading 49, 88 and 88 and fronting up lowly Essendon, I think he is both due and capable tonight of single handedly bringing the Alliance back into this match. He is after all WXV's number 1 pure forward (5th highest forward)!

Should have played Hutch or Gov tbh.
Zerrett did not fail 8).
A Zerrett 121 aand JJK 78 just makes things worse for the Alliance...
They need a miracle I think.

EURASIA WINS! EURASIA WINS!
After today's matches and a poor Captain's performance from the little master, it leaves the Alliance left with a score below 150 with all their players played. Even with Pendles courageous effort, there was sadly just too many let downs for the side to carry. However Pendles may have just snatched the best afield off of Zac Williams >:(.
Dropping Steven proves a masterful move by Holz, after he put in a shocking 52 on the emergency list! A solid all round effort with a low score of 85 to Dustin Martin (compared to a 46 from Heath Shaw of the Alliance), it pretty much assured the fate of the Alliance with a more consistent display by the EurAsians.
Now the question remains, can EurAsia crack 170?
Your a legend HP!
Yay EurAsia! But I'll be at the game to coach Gawn to be the World's Medalist though 8)
Great job euroasia everyone stepped up.
Out gawn
In charlie cameron from tokyo
Now every team has a starter
Which starter was from Berlin though? :P Emergencies don't count ;).
I'm undoing the previous change with Holz's blessing. So Cameron back out for Gawn.
Will be doing the formal wrap-up of the round tomorrow morning :)

EurAsia Destroys Alliance
Well, we've had closer matches that is for sure! The game was already decided with two more EurAsian's to spare in what would have been a fairly deflating and disappointing effort from the Alliance. Although this clash had 1 more centurion than last year's epic encounter, the Alliance had a whopping 6 players that scored below 80, which you just can't afford to have in this standard of game. The EurAsians meanwhile had contributions from EVERYONE; their lowest scorer was Dubliner Dustin Martin's 84! But it was perhaps their top scorer that surprised in PNL's Zachary Williams! He proved the turning point in the match really; outscoring two of the Alliances' defenders in Bartel & Shaw put together. Williams takes home the EurAsia medal back to PNL as well as pride from their supporters.
The Alliance just had a day to forget really, aside from the efforts of Worlds Medallist Scott Pendlebury (161) to try and bridge the gap. But even that could be highlighted as unfortunate, as he was not selected as captain. As already mentioned, Suns Shaw (46) and Bartel (54) were the team killers in the end, as well as Tom Mitchell (60) and even Leigh Montagna (70). Had they scored their averages and Mexico City captain Pendlebury... it would have been a hell of a game.
EurAsia received a significant contribution from Dublin (7 players), hence the title, but found contribution from every team except Tokyo whom could have offered the biggest of them all in Luke Parker (161)!
EurAsia (27.11.173) def AAP Alliance (23.11.149)
Best
EurAsia: Alex Rance, Zachary Williams, Patrick Dangerfield, Daniel Hannebery, Lachie Neale, Rory Sloane, Zachary Merrett, Lance Franklin, Joel Selwood, Jack Gunston
AAP Alliance: Kade Simpson, Scott Pendlebury, Tom Rockliff, Josh P Kennedy, Michael Barlow, Bryce Gibbs, Josh Gibson
Late Changes
EurAsia: Luke Dahlhaus & Matthew Scharenberg replaced by Joel Selwood & Jack Gunston
AAP Alliance: Robert Murphy replaced by Josh Gibson
ZACHARY WILLIAMS wins the EURASIA Medal
SCOTT PENDLEBURY wins the AAP ALLIANCE Medal
SCOTT PENDLEBURY wins the WORLDS Medal

149 is seen only as a pretty good score these days, strange to think Mexico City probably average more?
Maybe better to have played the Suns!

its a shocker. The suns were the main culprits though.
Its scary to think I could have just named Dublin and we would have won. I got to say I was tempted to drop Gawn for Omac
