I thought it was a pretty fun & unique edition last year, so I'm bringing it back! This week, I try to find your 2016 AFL equivalent in the previews. There will be no double-ups, so some may resemble AFL teams more than others, but have a read! :)

The Thunder have been following an upward trajectory for some time now, but it is only recently that they've been able to beat some bigger opponents more often than not and now suddenly find themselves in the top 4! In this regard, Beijing have a very GWS-feel about them and they just got talent on every line. The Spetsnaz have been a team hit very hard from injuries and season long suspensions to a host of its key players and as such, their success has been limited by that. There is only so much Joe Daniher can do without his mate Dyson Heppell, and in this regard I liken Moscow to Essendon (albeit a bit more successful). Despite the Spetsnaz performing well and beating Cairo last week, I'd expect the Thunder to get up here.

The Brewers had all this expectation going into the 2016 season, with some regarding that their list had top 4 potential. But really, it's all gone to shower and one wonders if the coach is to blame? Shouldering disappointment from outside the eight, it is in this regard I liken the Brewers to... ugh... Collingwood. The Dillos? Well, there isn't many teams that will lose their first 4 games and then win their next 5! Wow, what a turnaround for the Dillos and you wonder if this momentum will ever stop! However, the games they did lose to were against top teams New York, Dublin & Mexico City so in this regard I liken the Dillos to the downhill skiers themselves in the West Coast Eagles. A little different sure, but it's the best I could do! Well, really, the Brewers have been playing terribly so I see no reason why the Dillos can't get up against another struggling team.

The Sands started the season quite well! Although 2-2 after 4 rounds isn't that impressive, those two wins came against quality opposition and Cairo was in a good place. But damn, it's really gone downhill from there with 5 straight losses whilst not putting a score that could challenge the opposition. In this regard, I liken the Sands to the Suns; underperforming, but they still got talent and promise for the future. The Saints had an absolute shocker last week; scoring 117 in their loss against Buenos Aires. Christchurch haven't quite been up to their 2015 standard although continue to find wins and despite one really bad performance, still look to trouble this years final series. In this regard, I liken the Saints to Hawthorn and I think they should be able to account for Cairo.

Cape Town are a team stacked with young potential gems in transition from where they are now (in the bottom realms of the ladder) to hopefully, something much better down the track. In the meantime, it's almost like that no matter what they do, no one will dish out the criticism that some of performances warrant so in this regard, I liken the Cobras (despite their great win last week) to St Kilda. Rio posted a crucial last gasp win against New York last week that was decided on HGA, and on the whole this year have really shown to be a finals threatening team; capable of beating anyone comfortably on its day but still prone to a bad performance here and there. In this regard, I liken Rio to Geelong and I expect them to beat the Cobras this week.

The Destroyers have been a picture of dominant consistency this year; although not being quite as terrifyingly unstoppable like last year, Dublin still finds itself atop of the ladder and to date, the deserving occupant of the number one spot in the ladder. With their coach also supporting this team, I almost have no choice but to liken the Destroyers to North Melbourne. The Samurai, well, can be really good on its day and challenge the best, or absolutely stink it up and lose to the worst. Although I would say the Samurai have definitely boasted a better season, I liken them to Brisbane; overall quite disappointing, but not without a proud smile here and there. The Destroyers should get it done this week.

A very New kind of feeling in this match which I have gonged my MATCH OF THE ROUND! The Revolution have been an impressive force this year; besting its peers, generally beating the teams below it comfortably but has seen a couple of disappointments in the form of a 3 point loss against a good team in Rio and a more convincing loss against another good team in Christchurch. There is a bit of Adelaide about the Revolution for me, they just have a good outlook about them and are generally considered to belong in the top 8. New Delhi have really asserted themselves of late in the form of two consecutive 150+ scores! Amongst their 4 wins, they comfortably beat teams ranked below them and bested two respected peers whilst their losses have come against the more established teams in the comp. In this regard, I liken them to Port Adelaide, but unlike Port Adelaide I'm more sure of them continuing this upward trajectory! My tip? A very tough match this one! But New York have been doing it for longer and I think they'll get over the line.

The Islanders have dropped off a little bit over the past two weeks but especially so with an awful 106 last week that saw them exit the World Idol. Apart from that, the Islanders have been quite the solid unit especially when you consider they are missing Michael Hurley and to a lesser degree, handy depth player Ben Howlett. They're coming from a fair way back in 2014 and are very much touted as one of the more impressive young teams in the comp, and in this regard I liken them to Western Bulldogs. Going into the season, the Reindeers were expected to challenge again in the finals and put their infamously unlucky ways behind them. But, a horror start to the season ensued with a couple of really disappointing losses, where only recently have the Reindeers woken up and dared to dream for resurgent charge into the finals. The Reindeers SCREAM Richmond to me, causing me to chuckle. A really interesting match this one, and I actually think PNL might continue on with this new breath of life so I'll back them here!

The Magpies are finally starting to realise some of the abundance of youth on their list and as a result have wins & rising star nominations to show for it. If I recall correctly, I compared the Magpies to this team last year, and I feel compelled to do it again! The WXVs Melbourne Demons have definitely taken steps forward this year to the point where they would think they are a genuine chance against most opposition. You could mount an argument for the Royals that they have overachieved a touch this year, given that they have netted 4 wins from being 15th on the points ladder. But hey, they've beaten the teams that sit outside the eight and you gotta give them credit for taking those opportunities. In this regard, I liken the Royals to Carlton so far this year as they continue to gel with their new young team. I'll back Seoul here, but London are a genuine chance as well.

The Toronto Wolves have been going through a year of development which they ideally would like to have avoided. Although they sit 0-9, they haven't necessarily been the worst team of the week either and it should be noted that they would have beaten Berlin, Christchurch, Buenos Aires, Pacific, London, Cairo & Seoul last week had they played any of them. With the added "bonus" that their coach supports this team, the Wolves are definitely the Fremantle of Worlds still searching for their first win. But oh lordy, that's unlikely this week. The Suns were back to their brilliant best last week; top scoring (178) and led by the amazing Captain's performance from Heath Shaw. Mexico City are just biding their time until finals and not adverse to blooding a young gem here and there in the process. In this regard, you got to liken the Suns to the professional Sydney team and they'll charge for the premiership again. The Suns to win comfortably here.

Before the season started I would have thought we could pencil in the W vs NDT, but they are strong and what makes them scary is their ceiling

We're going to need our guns firing, and hope that the likes of Sidey and Conigs have quiet weeks

If we want to be a Top 4 side then the lads need to step up and get the job done after a very disappointing loss last week in a game which we should have won, much like our losses to Christchurch and Cairo too

Anything can happen in this comp - that's been proven time after time

Up The Revs!

I reckon we're better than Adelaide though Purps!

In this league I'd liken us to West Coast - usually choking on the road!  :'(

That comparison is scary.

Us Essendon, they are GWS.

We traded Ward, a GWS gun.

Got Hooker, an Essendon Gun.

We lost out big time.  :-\

Great Preview Purps!

Coming off another solid score I'd back our consistency in over Moscow however they do have some exciting players that could jump and surprise us! So no complacency ;)

However pending selection we could be in huge trouble this week: Luke Brown (ankle), Tom Jonas (suspension), Ted Richards (concussion) are all in doubt and could join most a big bunch of our defenders on the sidelines this week. We really could have only Harry Taylor and Sam Mayes available by the looks of it. :-\

Still, I like being compared to GWS! Nice work Purps :)

Im happy by defence is rock solid, only 2 stars at the moment but soo many good players. Might get Hansen back in aswell and Omac is slowly getting more experience.

I reckon carlton struggle against the cats though so nervous having 2 of them.

Hawks maybe

6-3 with 3 wins by 3 points. they are very meh. I reckon comparing to hawks is selling NDT short. I reckon they are the dees.

been good without being great that big wins against GWS is equivalent to their score of the round.

how is Berlin North?

North is 9-0, Berlin is 4-5 the rest seem pretty accurate. I recokn Berlin can double up on port. Apparently they were going to be great but they are meh.

Geelong have won heaps, lots of H&A success but fell last year, similar to the 08' Granny against Hawks.

Berlin, like North, have been a roundabouts but have never been seen as the real deal. This could change this season though.

Hawks? I'll take that every day of the week! Personally I think we've got a bit of my own team about us. We were tipped by some to finish on the bottom of the ladder last season, surprised most by finishing so high, struggled a little this year with lots of injuries but are still finding a way to win. I guess the injury thing applies to the Hawks too though, and the fact that Sammy was carrying the team early on fits too.

CHRISTCHURCH SAINTS

B: Matthew Boyd (v), Jarrad McVeigh, Ben Reid, Alex Neal-Bullen
M: Bryce Gibbs (C), Sam Mitchell, Hamish Heartless, Connor Blakely
R: Mason Cox
F: Leigh Montagna, Jake Stringer (r), Luke Breust, Kyle Langford
I: Toby McLean, Corey Ellis

E: Jordan Roughead, Daniel McKenzie, Jake Lever

R: Koby Stevens

IN: Boyd, Stringer, Blakely, Ellis, Langford
Out: Gilbert, Dempster, Stevens, Dickson, Garlett

'çhurch going in with SIX second year players this week, with another two on the emergency list and that's not even including Jack Steele who put up 44 possessions and a couple of goals in the 2's last week but probably won't get a call up into GWS' 22. Vandenberg and Andrews are unavailable while Abe still hasn't been given an opportunity to show that he's AFL quality yet but the rebuild is well and truly gaining traction. Blakely is the one to watch again this week, 62% gametime for 15 cont poss and 122 SC points is much better than that guy who got the rising star nom last week. Time to set the record straight.

Injury list
Jobe Watson - Season
Aaron Sandilands - 4-6 weeks
Ryan Griffen - 2 weeks

Harris Andrews 2 weeks
Jed Anderson - 2 weeks
Will Hoskin-Elliott - 2 weeks
Shaun McKernan - Test
Aaron Vandenberg - Test
Clay Smith - NFI

Of course it's our most important player who is out injured for the longest. 211's return has been pushed back until after the bye at least, so it might be looking like Christchurch will have to pull off something remarkable in the finals if we make it. We won't be a top qualifier if our rucks are scoring 60's instead of 110's and have half our midfield playing every week.

Absolutely nailed our AFL team I think Purps.

We've got the one old key forward gun who props up our team (Hawkins/NROO) and is mentoring the young future key forward gun (Wright/McCartin) then bags of young talent across the board who are inconsistent but on their day can be capable of springing an upset.

You never know which starting lineup you'll see each week because we're still working out who is in our best 22 but there are some guys there already we can build a team around (Prestia, Hunter, Savage, Smith, Wright, Mills, Parish)

And, of course we have one of the Saints most improved players (SC-wise) this season in Shane Savage and one of the Saints rising, yet still inconsistent, stars in Blake Acres. Also got the Saints reserve ruckline in Longer and Pierce.

Apart from Mundy and Houli, wouldn't they mostly be depth though? (I haven't looked at your team, just guessing)

Especially with the form your key forwards have been in though, didn't think any of those players would be making your team. Maybe Rosa as well I guess.

CHRISTCHURCH SAINTS

ATTACKING

B: Matthew Boyd (v), Jarrad McVeigh, Alex Neal-Bullen
M: Bryce Gibbs (C), Sam Mitchell, Daniel McKenzie, Connor Blakely
R: Mason Cox
F: Jake Stringer (r), Kyle Langford, Jack Steele, Toby McLean, Corey Ellis
I: Leigh Montagna, Luke Breust

E: Jordan Roughead, Jake Lever, Sean Dempster

R: Ben Reid

Koby out again joins Sandi, Watson, Griff as best XV players on the sidelines. Hartlett has been dropped after his pathetic form lately.

Now, on to the same old shower that I rant on about every week...

Need depth?

We've got 5 forwards in the forward line, 2 on the bench, 1 in the ruck, 1 being rested, with Jeff and Dickson playing but not making the cut. Vandenberg, WHE and Anderson out injured.

We've got 3 defenders on the emergency list, 1 being rested, with Wilson and Gilbert playing but not making the cut. Harris Andrews out injured, and then there's the guns in waiting Abe and DVR.

That's EIGHT 2nd year players in the XV this week. Thanks for your draft picks a couple of years ago.

P.s.

You don't HAVE to Attack....

I remember that one time, I think it was in the 2013 season?

Cairo had some seriously underperforming forward, and because they were doing pretty well, thought they'd play Chris Newman OOP as an F4... against an opponent they probably wouldn't beat in Mexico City.

Chris Newman did OK too! But alas, his score was cut in half. But Cairo only JUST lost this match...

... but had they played their regular forward, who did pretty well that game, they would have won.

I suppose that's just encouraging you more to Attack, but I just wanted to resurface that moment :P

Cairo put in a massive effort, but no cigar...

And the Suns put an end to Alexandria's reserves winning streak with a massive score! Led by Adam Goodes, recording the biggest score of the round, and the biggest reserves score ever (probably)

Cairo Sands (21.20.146) defeated Mexico City Suns (23.13.151)

Best
Cairo: R Douglas, L Thomas, P Hanley
Mexico City: J Bartel, J Waite, J Lewis, J Adcock, S Hurn, B Goddard, C Enright

Late Changes
Cairo: M Jones replaced D Armitage

Reserves
Alexandria Hieroglyphics (19.14.128) lost to Mexico City Suns (30.11.191)

Best
Alexandria: J Petrenko, J Gibson, J Johannisen, M Hutchings, J Polkinghorne, R Crowley
Mexico City: A Goodes, B Vince, M Blicavs, D Addison, J Russell, N Hrovat, B Lake, Aaron Davey

Another fun fact, had Cairo played Petrenko & Newman that match, they would have finished 4th instead of 5th. They then would have beaten Mexico City again funnily enough, taking them to the preliminary finals where they would have played... me. I don't know what Cairo would have scored because they didn't make it that far, but I scored 145... Cairo could have gone on to win the premiership maybe?!

Still definitely considering this and going OOP! Just would be very annoying if we went on to lose by the difference :-\ That being said, I'm not confident Jenkins will go huge against GWS at any rate so could be a fairly insignificant loss of points if we were to play him OOP...

It's the principle of the thing tho - we wouldn't be so wrecked by Hooker+Heppell+Sheed+Jaeger being missing if we hadn't been forced to give up about half a dozen + extra players/picks on various begged trades

Change of mind. We aren't attacking any more. D4 is the only other defender on our list that is named as an emergency this week (Daniel Howe) - if he doesn't play then Polec will play OOP at D4. Jenkins gets a rest against his former club ;)

*still rightful owners due to being screwed out of him

I truly know what the Aboriginals felt when they had their land taken. We need our own Mabo!

Haha you guys keep calling daylight robbery but I still think you guys will come out ok long-term. Weits, Bell and Hooker seemed pretty fair compensation for Ward and Jenkins. Jenks has had a few big games but apart from that has hovered around that 60-80 mark again this season.

It's the principle of the thing tho - we wouldn't be so wrecked by Hooker+Heppell+Sheed+Jaeger being missing if we hadn't been forced to give up about half a dozen + extra players/picks on various begged trades

Well if the re-negotiated trades werent fair then you shouldnt have done them.

I'm going to captain Gawn in SC if Parker fails now Purps has lifted the curse.

Also a casual 60 SC for our captain in the first quarter...

That's our one saving grace. Hoping the way Wingard is going he can match the effort. *touchwood*

Also this is turning out to be a good trade for both sides:

T. Lynch + N36 (Schoenfield) FOR T. Menzel + B. Stretch + N7 (Keays)

Lynch is still going strong like we predicted cause of his role and injury-free. While looks like Keays is trying to make the most of playing forward, Menzel showing flashes of brilliance albeit at SANFL level and Stretch coming into his own lately! The one we suspected least to make an impact has surprised us all at PNL!

Viney over Gawn purps.

Best player = captain unless really good reason not too! Not worth the extra 20 points you might get each week

Now that you've been sufficiently enlightened by my sage advice, I'll slink away

Getting Lewis, Grigg and SDT for Bennell was a trade many thought we were losing

So glad we did that trade, especially for Grigg - he gets looked at as a rubbish player, but his SC numbers are super consistent for someone who cost so little. Having him in my i5 team the year before showed me he actually is a good SC option :)

As for this round, today has been better for us, but NDT are going along nicely and last night really put us behind from the get go :(

Our forward line has cost us this week all scoring 50's so far :(

New York 947/11 with Hurn, Duncan (CC), Picken, JJK (CC) and HGA to come
NDT 723/9 with Howe, Wellingham, Walls, Sidebottom (C), Darling and Martin to come

Should be really close by the looks of things

We did dump Lewis from the leadership group and he responds in kind with a 141

Cannot take a trick in this regard.

After Saturday night:

Beijing in real trouble against the Spetsnaz  :o :o :o Captain Ward put in his worst performance for the year against his former club, leaving the result of this game largely in the hands of Moscow Captain Naitanui. Go decent (like 110), then you'd say Moscow will probably win!

Although the Brewers have missed out on 102 points from not selected Gawn as their captain, they seem to be in OK shape. However, if Pendlebury goes big than the Dillos should get over the line.

Cairo are playing terribly. But really... they're still in it. If you include HGA... oh no wait, Rhys Palmer was really that bad. No, Christchurch should get the job done  :-X

Cape Town dare to dream?! JPK has almost single handedly kept them in this match, and with Prestia, Hunter, Blicavs and Hawkins to come, they have the staff to keep it going. But a classic GAJ game should see the end of the Cobras.

Yup. Dublin. But looking forward with interest to see new Captain Lycett cope with the title.

As predicted, this does seem to be the MOTR! With HGA, I give the favouritism to New York, but its Duncan, JJK & Sidebum that will really guide the outcome.

PNL really do seem to be back! With their forward line combining for 467 points, and with Captain Pridda still to come, I reckon PNL might top score for the round  :o

Very tight match here between Seoul & London. But with Captain Danger still to come, I think I like the Magpies from here.

.... surely not? It's not totally impossible you know for the Wolves to get up here. They just need AT LEAST 120 from Captain Kreuzer, and for Bartel & Simpson to be quiet. But the Suns should get it done.

Score Summary
Beijing Thunder (945) from 11# vs Moscow Spetsnaz (939) from 11

Cannot take a trick in this regard.

Don't worry mate - it was his 250th and against Brisbane. He'll continue to put up shockers

It's game on now, but should go down to the wire

Will need JJK to kick 15 and go 200+ for us to win!

Still anyones game with HGA I reckon

Sidey you need to finish this off with a big 2nd half

Quote from: Purple 77 on May 29, 2016, 05:23:55 PM
New York Revolution (1109) from 12* vs New Delhi Tigers (723) from 9
so with HGA 1159/12 to 723/9

Sidey x2, Howe, Wallis need 436 to even it up

and then you have JJK's CC as well

I had the C on JJK this week, but AK wanted to go CC. Might lose a few points but Duncan did well - as long as it doesn't cost us the match haha

Wallis and Picken were even, and Welly and Hurn are even now too but Hurn could turn out to be HGA  :-\

Blakely is the one to watch again this week, 62% gametime for 15 cont poss and 122 SC points is much better than that guy who got the rising star nom last week. Time to set the record straight.

Just the 56% TOG this week for 14 contested possessions (out of 25) and 97 points.

Saints sift through Sands

Another mediocre score for the Saints, and yet another win. But really, when you consider who is unavailable, and also who actually played (basically the 2014 draft), it's still kinda admirable. And to compound the loss for Cairo is the injury of key Sand Adams.

Frustrating loss in a game we should've performed much better in :( Props to Moscow though getting the job done.

Geez that Melbourne v Port game sunk us though, Bennedy put in an absolute stinker and Wines, Petracca and Polec weren't much better.

and the PNL mid season resurgence continues to gain momentum  ;)
We're going well with a few players hitting form and others coming into their own!

Pacific were unlucky Titch didn't have much backing and had alot of passengers. We can't complain, helped put us back into the 8 after our horror start!

Mexico City wins a 4th straight North American cup over Toronto, Brendon Goddard adds the Pyke Medal to his decorated Worlds career (2 Premierships, a best and fairest, 2 All-Worlds selections, and a Mexico City best and fairest)

He really is becoming a fan favourite over here at PNL!

Also, 5-0 against Pacific!! At least one of those undefeated streaks still in tact after so many seasons.
