The 'Jing have no reason to 'Jing this week after letting slip a golden opportunity to take a scrambling Reindeer scalp. After two exciting 140+ performances that saw the Thunder take down Dublin, the Thunder took a brief step back with that troublesome undermanned defence causing problems. Meanwhile, Cape Town continued their upward trend in terms of scoring which has counter-intuitively resulted in increasingly heavier defeats (albeit just the two). There seem to be a few passengers currently in the Cobra XV which, if rectified, could mean they could beat anyone on any given day and I feel this is the view they have whenever they take on an opponent ranked higher than them on the ladder. Speaking of which, this would be a unusual feeling for both coach and team at Beijing! Will they make like the Melbourne Demons and wallow in a pathetic sense of fake and meaningless accomplishment? Or will they respond to last week and get back the their 140+ ways? Seeing as no one is pathetic as Melbourne in that regard, I can only assume the later. Thunder for me.

The Sands have been good in the last two weeks! Albeit just the two consecutive posting of 130, that score means that they could beat most teams on their bad day, and as such you'd even dare to breathe in a sense of optimism at Cairo (along with a few grains of Sand). New York, well, they haven't really had a bad day yet, and when you consider that their captain has scored less than 50 in the last two weeks and they've still managed scores of 156 & 139, it doesn't look like bad days are on the horizon. I almost feel bad for being surprised at the rise of the Revolution... the pre-season comp even foretold it! I just feel the Revolution are a correct captain choice away from making RD/AK the co-coaches of the week. So I just gotta back 'em in.

No competition this week, this game is clearly my MATCH OF THE ROUND! A top of the table clash between the Reigning & Supreme Premiers vs the Jaguars-on-a-Mission... as the wise Bruce once said, "It just makes you excited, doesn't it?". The Suns sit 2nd and three-zip with scores reading 140, 139 and 156 and scalps of New Delhi, Buenos Aires and Cairo. Without meaning to offend, this is their first major challenge from a top 4 contender; but they know how to handle those. Meanwhile, Rio de Janeiro has unquestionably been the best team in the World so far this year, with scores reading 149, 166 and 169 with scalps of PNL, Tokyo & Pacific. Rio have both taken down last years finalists and scored much more, but if they want to REALLY make a statement, then there is no better place than Fireball Stadium against the reigning premiers. My tip? Perhaps surprisingly, I'm gonna back in the Suns' experience and HGA, as surely Rio haven't learnt all the lessons yet?

Moscow's start to the season has been perfectly fine really. They posted a good win against Pacific, won as expected against Seoul and with no shame went down to an in-form New York. What would be concerning however is that their scores have dropped every week and you can't help but wonder if the Spetsnaz are tiring without their suspended stars? A loss here against currently last placed Toronto would almost be a blow that the Spetsnaz might not be able to shake off. The Wolves were only 5 WXV points shy of Moscow last week; and seeing as they only had the one centurion, surely more are to step up? You gotta give Toronto a chance here, but they need contributions from all of their XV, a right captaincy choice and another player or two to lift up to another level. I'll tip Moscow, but I won't rule out the Wolves either.

New Delhi are coming off their first win of 2016 (their second win in since Round 13 of 2014!!!!) and would be quietly chuffed with their obvious improvement this year; despite just the one win to show for it. This week, they come up against a team that has basically lost as many times as New Delhi have won in the last 2 years in Dublin; whom themselves are coming off a mammoth 166. The Destroyers responded after their Round 2 loss to Beijing and would be welcoming the return to the 160 barrier; made possible by Joel Selwood hitting back and reigning Jim Stynes medallist Todd Goldstein trying his best against Max Gawn. But for New Delhi... could there be a better fairytale? To take on the gladiators themselves and come out victorious? Perhaps when Dublin strike, they will be met with Steel (Sidebottom)? It's a nice thought. But I'll tip the Destroyers.

An interesting match this one! The Islanders were the victims of untamed Jaguars last week... and that'd be an expensive counselling session to get over that. Pacific posted a decent score of 139 however, so they are by no means a push over; they hosted an elimination final last year! The Islanders have been steady with scores of 130, 145 and 139 and yet only have the one win to show for it. The Brewers are similar in that regard, with scores of 126, 144 and 145; a cumulative total of only just one more point than the Islanders! Berlin got a much needed win last week, and frankly the need and necessity to win hasn't subsided for a desperate looking Berlin outfit, or Pacific for that matter. This is what makes this match so interesting; one team will be 1-3 after the match and in all sorts. Who will win? Gosh darn I'm nervous. I don't like how this is a Pacific home game either; adding to my nerves. Unfortunately, I almost think Pacific are the favourites at home here, and I rarely tip against the favourites.

The Reindeers can breath a HUGE sigh of relief; grinding out a win against a respectable opponent in Beijing. PNL sit 9th on both the ladder and points ladder, with the absence of Swan, Hodge and last week Wingard being felt. On its 2015 reputation, this week should be regulation win. On current form? It's interesting. London have applied a vice grip in their last two games (and wins), restricting their opponents to scores of 112 and 117 whilst scoring 132 both times. It's low score... but it's one that is always capable of winning a match and London will go into this match both underdogs and with a sense of causing an upset win, should the Round 2 Reindeers (126) return to fore. It'll be a tough ask in France though, and it's with this reason I'll back the Reindeers, but lose this and... say goodbye to a qualifying final.

Seoul has plenty of it this week! The Magpies are coming off an upset win against the more fancied Christchurch; largely thanks to a herculean effort from Captain Dangerfield! Seoul also has posted back-to-back Rising Star nominations in Caleb Daniel & Clayton Oliver which just goes to show that they fit in with the rest of the glowing promise of their youthful team-mates. Buenos Aires have a different mood about them at the moment; sitting 17th and winless. But, when you look at who they've played so far... it's not exactly surprising (New York, Mexico City and a pissed off Dublin). This game presents its first opportunity to play against a team more on its level, and with star draftee Marcus Adams proving an instant hit, it is a great opportunity to open its 2016 ledger with its new co-coaches. Who will win? I've always liked Seoul... they have Clayton Oliver now.

Another intriguing game this one. After starting the season with a bang, the Samurai have fallen dramatically with scores of 152, 132 and 117. Still, they sit 1-2 with three respectable opponents behind them and there is plenty of time to regroup and hit form, as they'll likely need to this week against the Saints. Christchurch let last week slip against Seoul and would be pretty filthy about it (and maybe Captain Griffen for the second time this year). With a mounting injury list, Christchurch's famous depth is being tested and yet it still churns out a 139 "on a disappointing day". There is plenty of time left in the year and the Saints shouldn't be too worried yet. I'll tip them against the Samurai in this one, because they provide a more reliable output at the moment... who knows what the Samurai will do?

Nice write-ups Purps, love reading them as always!

Some interesting games this week. I'm rooting for the Jags against the Suns, love an underdog story! Pacific vs Berlin and Seoul vs Buenos Aires are two that pitch currently similar standard teams against one another as well.

Need to get my defence settled before I can go into any match confident at the moment :(

Gonna be tough without Murphy, Vince and Ramsay this week, but I'm looking forward to a big game against Mexico!

Same games seem like they could be pretty tight to me as well! Rio looking top notch, but I'd love to see who comes out on top of Pacific Vs Berlin, both will be fighting for those top 8 spots, so would be a good scalp for the Islanders to grab :-X.

As for London, hopefully last week is just a sign of things to come. We should be getting a few names back, and a little more depth from the youngsters. Once Marseilles can return to its former Reserves Glory, maybe our Reindeers will begin flying again :D.

Out(s): R. Murphy(Injured), B. Vince(Suspended), D. Rioli(Omitted), C. Pedersen(Omitted)

Losing Murphy and Vince will hurt our scoring power a little bit, but I am confident that Tarrant can step in and average 80ish in the defence. Pearce replaces Vince this week and I'm hoping Pearce can find some form after a very quite start to the year.

I'm putting Boak on notice this week, he doesn't have to have the added responsibility of being VC so he can just focus on his scoring. Apparently he is feeling a tad homesick and has already planned an extended stay in Dublin when we play them in a few weeks or something, so it's affected his scoring. Averaging a trashy 78.33 so far this year. Anyways, Boak I expect big things this week pal!

Here comes a few ins :D. Hodge and Wingard welcome returns! Enright and Marley out will hurt, but luckily have Williams who may have cracked his way back into GWS and the Reindeers 8). Hodge finally helps us get our M4 back, but now leaves us with a surplus of forwards :P.

Last bench spot may still change, but such a tough call! Also a few youngsters will be getting games later in the year from the signs of things early 8).

We expect a lot more from Matt, he's been down on form so far this year

@ Purps, yeh we were planning on it but he has Hawks where as Ox has Essendon next week. He'll probably still come in but don't want to be locked into it just in case

This feels like deja vu... giving the C to Gawn instead of Fyfe... again. Levi's former gif and affection for Ben Jacobs has REALLY scared me off Fyfe (all I can think of his "Ben Jacobs will ruin your season"... god dammit Levi!). With no Sandi feeding him possessions, and no Mundy to distract Jacobs... and with Gawn coming up against a ruckman he destroyed last year... argh, I dunno!

And I know Dixon scored a century last week. But I REFUSE to play him in consecutive weeks! He doesn't back it up! I think we might have a convenient on-off arrangement with the resting rule...

FF Live Scoring summary says he got mothballed in the third quarter, I assume he played in the third quarter? Meaning he can't be subbed out.

The Suns also don't have a RUC emergency, so he stays on the field regardless.

Sorry for the delay... I'll put the progress scores up shortly

Rio off to a dream start against Mexico City, largely thanks to a sore and sorry Hampson.

Cairo start in front of the Revolution! That's a great early battle won for the Sands!

New Delhi v Dublin; 507 points between 5 players. High quality start!

NY can thank their lucky stars that Beams is still injured, otherwise this game would already be over!

No Mundy and Gibbo for us too

And also no Roberton and Dunstan for us (and yes I know they don't match Gibbo and Mundy) because they're way better ofc

Need Mummy to go huge as C. Also if Jacobs can go to Hill and keep him to about 12 points, that'd be great haha

New York are looking like they are doing a Melbourne at this stage! Did they think they had this match won before they stepped out onto the field?!

Mexico City are spooked at the moment from the Jaguars

Brewers shaming themselves out of the finals?

PNL might be in a bit of trouble against London!

I heard Moscow's May ran onto the field and took him out.

New York: 1033/12 with T McDonald, Hill and Waite
Cairo: 783/9 with Mumford C, Adams, Amon, Higgins, Lobb and Palmer

We're stuffed. Besides Lewis, Heeney and JJK, everyone else has been really disappointing for us this week, and it will cost us the win  :-[

I also heard coach Torp will be firing May as of Monday.  :(

Dirty play from Steven, and the coaches aren't happy.

Hmm. Tom Mitchell's mediocre captain score keeps me in it.

Just need Gawn to do well.

Don't cry just yet, Sundays are always a killer and it's not like we have superstars left. Don't forget our best score so far is like 1300.  :P

That said, we do look like we could end up 2-2 after 4 rounds, who would've picked that?! Karen is the answer, she's a clever one. ;D

Our tagger, who art in North Melbourne
Jacobs be thy name
Thy Hill will come, and thou will be tagged at Etihad as he would in Perth
Give us this day our daily banter
And forgive us our shower scores
As we forgive those that score shower against us
And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us to victory

Amen.

London with a lead over PNL

Cairo a solid Mumford game away from beating New York?!

Berlin & Mexico City back in the match against Pacific & Rio?

Christchurch and Tokyo neck and neck!

Yeah, didn't notice that myself, on the upside that kinda equals Laverde's injury affected score :(.

He'll likely be our HGA as well. This GWS Vs Port game will likely decide our match! Shiel (CC), Zac, Westy, Wingard and Lobbe! 1/3 of our team right there :P.

If my math is correct, we're up by ~200pts using Amon as HGA (you'd bloody hope he is).

So, Higgins + Adams + 200 vs Tmac + Hill + Waite

I now feel this is worth quoting again:

NY can thank their lucky stars that Beams is still injured, otherwise this game would already be over!

This is frustrating! Matty Jones doing a great job over the first few rounds playing off a HBF but only has FWD eligibility... We could really use him down back at the moment :(

New York: 1033/12 with T McDonald, Hill and Waite
Cairo: 1220/13 including HGA with Adams and Higgins

Absolutely anything and everything for me footywise has been horrific this round, so no real surprise to get pumped here too lol

Need to bounce back vs Christchurch next week

Hill and Waite doing their best for us both being top scorers at 3/4 time, but too little too late unfortunately

Well done Cairo

Hill and Waite doing their best for us both being top scorers at 3/4 time, but too little too late unfortunately

Well done Cairo

Just quietly, how flowering good has Waite been this year!
If Missy dies and Hill and Waite both go to town, you're still a chance... but the odds are slim.  :P

Thunder Rattles Cobras

'twas quite the performance from Beijing, and a great response to last week's disappointing loss. With centurions from each positions, the Thunder were "rained" supreme. The Cobras should at least be surprised about Dom Tyson, in an otherwise forgettable day.

Revolution bogged down by Sands

ARE THE SANDS BACK?! That's two BIG scalps under their belt in PNL and New York, and when you consider Dayne Beams has to come in at some point... can this impressive 141 be boosted to challenge all teams?! Mind is freaking blown. Revolution still can't find a leader to stand up... well, within the leadership group that is! Waite has been amazing so far this year.

Suns Go Down to Dark as Night Jaguars

Well... this was anti-climatic. I wish I had the 2012-2014 records in an easy-to-read fashion, because I don't remember the last time the Suns went this bad... but I can tell you not in 2015! Especially at Fireball Stadium! The Jaguars just had to go through the motions in the end, and still posted the second highest score for the week. Scary.

Spetsnaz put down Struggling Wolves

Ugh... the heartbreak. It was the Moscow home ground advantage that proved the final lead change in an enthralling (although scrappy) contest. The Spetsnaz simply had too many centurions, and would be unbelievably relieved at winning this match. The Wolves still searching for that first win under its new coach.

Royals take Reigns on Reindeers Season

Similarly to Berlin, I think PNL are done. At least their top 6 aspirations anyway. A combination of injuries and poor form have crippled the Reindeers and the Royals capitalised on that, despite their OOP ruckman contributing 16 points. Well done London though!

Magpies escape Armadillo Claws

Dayum! Another match where the HGA provided the final lead change for the match, with Seoul relieved that a team submission error didn't cost them the match. The Dillos would sure love a host of their players coming back from injury right about now; and try and find that elusive first win.

Saints see off Samurai

The Samurai have again failed to match their Round 1 performance (which pisses me off more and more each week) and have missed an opportunity to win against an under-performing Saints side. Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti continues to be a revelation for the Samurai, whilst the Saints benefited from a good captaincy choice.

Also, I forgot to mention, Daniel Menzel making his Worlds debut is pretty special!

Rio square the ledger against Mexico City, whilst Christchurch makes it two from two against Tokyo.

The rest of the games pretty much were efforts at squaring ledgers, which is pretty cool!

Much better 'Jing! Pretty good all-round effort. But I'm starting to sound like a broken record, really need to get that backline settled soon :-\ Super stoked with our new skipper Cal Ward though 8)

Some epic close matches this weekend in other results!

Also, I just so happened to realise that, in naming the reserves' best (the criteria is 70 or above), I've accidentally made it 80 or above in the first 4 rounds...

Sorry about that. Will be fixed from now on.

I bet 4.5 Nigeys that New York's captain scores less than 70.
Sorry Nige.

Much better 'Jing! Pretty good all-round effort. But I'm starting to sound like a broken record, really need to get that backline settled soon :-\ Super stoked with our new skipper Cal Ward though 8)

Some epic close matches this weekend in other results!

:'(

NY no chance for top 4. RD/AK, I'll bet you 2.5 Nigeys (won from Rocky being goat, pay up Jay you flower ;) ), that Cairo not only beats you H2H this year, but finishes above you on the ladder as well.

#NoLibbaNoNY

Might get 2.5 Nigeys back!

Similarly to Berlin, I think PNL are done.
This is just a horrible start to the season :(. Lav/Crozier on bench and a bunch of underperformers. Good on Royals though, took home their crown jewels :(.

Hard to win when your captain puts up 50!

Too good Beijing.

6 of the games decided by less than 10 WXV points or 100 SC points! Others could have been super close as well!

Making for some very interesting viewing!

That's standard every week at New York!

Definitely took the pressure off us a bit. I think you'll be much more competitive most weeks!

NDT getting brutal. Dropped Crouch after he scored 90! Must not be up to their high expectations.

I thought this too haha

Matt is certainly beating his brother Brad... I'm flowering over his injuries >:(

At least rest the lad!

Oxley 93
Crouch 76

NDT are all over it ;)
