Title: The Essendon Players Saga
Post by: LF on January 12, 2016, 04:36:05 PM
-Teams can draft from both the top up players and the leftovers from the rookie draft

-Players picked in the top up draft cannot be kept on teams list beyond the end of this season, they will be returned to the player pool available for anyone to pick in the rookie draft any top up players not retained or picked up by an AFL club will be delisted.

-Any top up players that are signed by a club at the end of the season will be available to all teams to draft and cannot be retained by the team that picks as a top up player beyond the end of this season.

-Top up players must be picked as like for like positions e.g Jobe Watson replacement must be another mid,Jake Carlisle replacement must be either a fwd/def or either of those 2 positions on their own.If a top up player has dpp mid/fwd for example then he can replace either a mid or forward.

-All teams will be expected to pick a player even if you think you don't need them,we would prefer that all teams have as many players available as possible just in case of a big hit of injuries similar to last season.

Everyone should get top up players for the players they are losing. It's known before the season that these players are unable to play which gives us the time to make a decision. I don't see the point of teams having less players on their squad when we know top up players are being used

Just added a couple more points in regards to coaches who don't wish to top up their teams via the mini draft
Trying to cover every foreseeable angle and will be constantly updating the OP as more ideas/suggestions come through

If a team does not wish to top up the players before the season. They shouldn't be able to unless it's in the mid season draft. It's their own fault thinking their team has enough depth

Have come up with a possible draft order, please discuss this as it is not set in stone just yet.
It involved using players averages from last season, age of players, position value, how losing this player for the season affects each team

1.Dyson Heppell- Hawaii (mid only)
2.Michael Hurley - Los Angeles (def only)
3.Cale Hooker -  Guadalajara (def,fwd or def/fwd)
4.Michael Hibberd - Springfield (def only)
5.Jobe Watson - Los Angeles (mid only)
6.Brent Stanton -  Hawaii (mid only)
7.Ben Howlett - Nicaragua (mid,fwd or mid/fwd)
8.Patrick Ryder - Washington (ruck,fwd or ruck/fwd)
9.Jake Carlisle - El Paso (def,fwd or def/fwd)
10.Jake Melksham - Guadalajara (mid only)
11.Travis Colyer - El Paso (fwd only)
12.Stewart Crameri - Nicaragua ( fwd only)

Hocking/Melksham (both on par imo) were basically starters in our 18 where we don't have great mid depth, but I'm not gonna worry about it too much because that ranking list is fairly spot on.

I can probably swap Ryder and Howlett around since Washington also has Blicavs in their ruck as well as Currie and Phillips so you can get first pick for another forward since is probably fair if we do the draft like for like players

Happy with all this. Just as long as the delisting is overturned at season end. Wouldn't want to give up a player for a short term fix.

It's technically not a delisting but yeah everyone will be able to trade or do whatever with their original player at the end of the season as they will be still/back on their team list

Just need coaches to post their preferences from the list of points in the OP now so we can decide all the rules for how this will end up working.
Can add to things if you want as well.

Despite losing Heppell and Stanton, I believe there should be no compo. We knew the risks, its like a player doing an ACL, shower happens.

Just need to move on and try cope the best we can.

I've had another idea I am currently running by Atto to see what he thinks first before posting it up,entails a bit extra work for us but could work out better than compo picks
Title: Re: The Essendon Players Saga
Post by: LF on January 14, 2016, 04:17:57 PM
Ok so I've seen some comments in a couple of other comps about using last years avg which is no good imo.

So what I was thinking we can either use a players career average against that team for example Heppell v West Coast his avg is say 85 which will include vests etc or use say last 4 avg or whatever number of years we decide on and use that score instead of doing a mini draft for compo picks.
Due to these players having a predetermined score they cannot be used as C,VC or EVC tho

Please post feedback on this idea as we will be going with something to fix this,we honestly can't have teams short of players even tho we have decent size lists, last year was terrible for injuries and we need to be prepared just in case there is a repeat of it this year.

Makes the competition fairer too IMO.

I've just had an idea. Should this happen, since Dallas (my team) isn't affected by the saga, I could keep the scores to myself and then release what score you give the affected players during lockout to add to your team score at the end of lockout. Thoughts on that?
Title: Re: The Essendon Players Saga
Post by: R.Griffen on January 14, 2016, 08:11:16 PM
I really dislike that idea. The players average could be affected by just 1 good or bad game. Seems like if you had Zac Merrett and he scored a 30 because Essendon got smashed but you are playing someone with Watson who averages 100+ against that team. It just doesn't seem fair

I can tell you now that I have checked Watson's career avg's v all teams and he has one team he avg'ed 106 and one 100 the rest are all below that with the lowest being 76

Brent Stanton has 4 career avg's of 104,105,107 and 100 v teams all the rest are under those lowest is 79

Dyson Heppell has 4 career avg's of 106,103,102 and 101 v teams all the rest are under those lowest is 85

Jake Melksham has a high of 78 and a low of 51

Michael Hibberd has a high of 96  and a low of 68

Michael Hurley has a high of 82 and a low of 50

Patrick Ryder has a high of 91 and a low of 63

and there are more of course but that's it for now and those avg's(all full career v their opponents) are fair enough to use without being over the top.

Nothing is finalised yet anyway there is no big rush yet just will keep ideas coming if anymore are thought of.

+1 with Simpkin. >:( Great ball getter and dt'er when he plays, just not a very accurate kick so he didn't fit the Hawks game plan and wasn't re-drafted.

I don't think anyone should be compensated for 1 Essendon player on their team. If teams have multiple players, especially in the same position, then maybe a 'top up' player should be allowed just for this year but other than that we should all be able to cope with 1 out from 54 in our squad.

ESSENDON has locked away its 10th and final top-up player after signing former Lions big man Sam Michael.

The 22-year-old ruck-forward has been training at Tullamarine in recent weeks and a fiercely competitive effort in last Friday's intraclub match helped Michael earn a second chance at AFL level.

Might have to wait n see what position they give him .. you would think it will be R/F but you never know with them.
