Title: 2015/16 Sheffield Shield
Post by: PowerBug on October 27, 2015, 03:21:28 PM
The Sheffield Shield gets underway tomorrow. All the international options will be playing in Round 1 which is a Day/Night round. Normal things will resume in Round 2 as the test match gets underway.

5 Rounds are playing before Christmas, then we break for the BigBash, and then the final 5 rounds will be after Christmas.

In addition, there is a corresponding D6s competition. nrich102 and BB67th, coaches of the Queensland Koalas, took out the One Day Cup that just finished. If anyone wants to get involved with D6s read around and ask coaches, or just simply be an observer and post in the threads if you are watching the matches :)

I first checked in at Tea, and I'm like "oh shower, final session soon" then I remembered.

I could get used to it though.

Everyone get the flower around Wade. Declared when they were 125 behind. I rate those sort of tactics, but even I thought that was a bit too much, should have declared only around 50-70 behind. However it was proven an absolute mastestroke, they have now bowled Queensland out for 103, after they made 440 in the first dig! He has turned what a few hours earlier looked destined for a draw with Queensland 440 and Vic 3-300 halfway through day 3, into a very good chance of a Vic win. Attacking captaincy that won't always pay off as it has now, but that has to be applauded.

A further congrats to Travis Dean. He would be feeling a heap of pressure I'm sure, given the guy he was selected for was in the process of scoring 280* odd, but played a magnificent innings on debut definitely looking up to the level, ending on 150 odd not out.

Jesus that's an emphatic win. Dean again scores an unbeaten ton! What an impressive debut, 250 runs without being dismissed lol. Nice to see my man Stoinis amongst the runs after a duck, 60 odd not out.

Who the hell would you drop for Finch? Was looking like Stoinis till that innings, maybe Quiney? But geez he'd be stiff too with a 50 in that innings. Huge selection headache for selectors, and well done to them on selecting Dean

Amazing effort by the Vics, good luck to the selectors trying to get Finch in, nobody failed.

Sheesh Travis Dean did alright. Unfortunately for him, besides Arthur Morris all the other players to have scored two tons on Shield debut I haven't heard of before and thus probably didn't turn out to be that great :P

Still, farkkkk he played the whole game.

WOW. So Victoria got full points for the abandoned match

Just to explain, in the Shield 6 points go to the winning team, along with bonus points for batting and bowling. (Not sure how this works). A Drawn match has only 1 point go to each team.

This is different than what it used to be, where there was first innings points awarded and then extras if an outright was achieved. This change basically makes for more attacking play and aggressive bowling/declarations.

This is pretty big news too:

"The remaining Shield matches scheduled at the SCG this season - against Tasmania from November 14 and Queensland from November 27 - have been moved to Bankstown Oval."

I have an idea, let's move the New Years test to Adelaide Oval whilst we are at it 8)

The other two shield matches are really close! QLD vs TAS could have all three results and SA look like they might chase down the total WA set them but it's the Redbacks so a loss is always a possibility!

8 runs to get, 2 wickets to get. SA vs WA going down to the wire! Mennie and Richardson batting, Behrendorff and Hogan bowling with a ball that's 6 overs old.

Aaron Ayre with a quick 24 off 10 before being dismissed and the Vics declare at 7/423.

Meanwhile, Joe Mennie's started the innings well for SA. Has bowled 4 maidens and has 2 wickets without conceding a run!

Fair game Siddle, having a crack at us for not playing for the victory... What happened in last years Sheffield Shield final you muppet.

Rob Quiney (53 from 163 balls), David Hussey (37 not out off 169) and Matthew Wade (nine not out off 99).

Clearly only one team playing out there.

However apparently they're not going to bowl the entire set and this is the last over??? ???

The radio guys saying that WA are going to fall 5 overs short. But they won't be penalised due to the delays in game throughout the day! That makes no sense to me they already extended play by 30 minutes yet they are still 5 down but are apparently not behind in the rate? I'm confused as to how that is the case

Gaz Lyon with a lazy 75 off 46, with 7 fours and 5 sixes :o

Not sure. When I looked at the table I just thought we would play the winner of that match in the final? :-/ if the Vics need to win we are in trouble.

Not over in Qld yet - Just need to keep WA Lead manageable - Weather may have a say as well.

Just wish Wildermuth could show his real batting skills as well.  Another 2 wickets and bowling well.

Current standings:
VIC 46.62
QLD 45.66
NSW 44.13
SA 40.67
WA 36.18
TAS 25.69

Points:
6 for a win
3 for a tie
1 for a draw
0.01 for every run above 200 in the first 100 overs of the first innings
0.5 points for taking wickets 5,7,9 in the first 100 overs of the first innings of each team only

So this means:
VIC 0 batting + 1 bowling (Batting now)
QLD 0 + 0.5 (Potential 1 point gettable)
NSW ~1 + 0.5 (Potential 1 point gettable)
SA 1.46 + 1.5
WA 0.2 + 1.5 (Batting)
TAS 0 + 1.5

VIC 141/5 and WA 220/6 at the time of posting

Adding these scores onto the current table we have:
VIC 47.62
QLD 46.16
NSW 45.63
SA 43.63
WA 37.88
TAS 27.19

Which to me says that if QLD lose and SA win, we leap them. If VICs lose then we leap them. If NSW lose we leap them. If it's a draw then we can leap both! If it's a tie it goes down to the wire between SA and NSW. NSW were on 304 after 102 overs, so if they were on exactly 300 after 100 overs, and they take 4 more VIC wickets before the 100th over, then SA and NSW will be EQUAL on points :P

So that is where things sit currently. QLD will need a win or a miracle from Tassie and Victoria to see them in the final.

SA 49.63
VIC 48.13
QLD 46.66
NSW 46.57
WA 39.48
TAS 27.19

The live table with only the points for match results to be added. So a tie between VIC and NSW will see SA through still, obviously a draw in the game and SA will host the final.

Victoria are 90 runs down after the first innings but have an early NSW wicket (Cowan). Tough situation for them in the final innings. Bat for the win (and home final) but risk the loss and thus a final spot? Or play for the draw and play the final in SA...

QLD are all but gone (no chance of winning or tieing this now) so the Redbacks are basically through :)

If you were Victoria right now what would you do?

55/4 after drinks in the first session. 213 to win still.

You win/tie the game you hos tthe shield final.
You lose the game you don't make the shield final.
You draw the game you playt he shield final away.

I feel like with Wade and White there if they play it slow until tea and if they are still there naturally they won't need more than 120 runs and also have Dan Christian in at 7. 120 runs in a session will be easy for them in that case. But they need the safety net of drawing the game at the least so shouldn't take that risk now.

Surely they'd focus on making the final, even if it was away. At the very least they should play for the draw but also try to score sensibly at a rate that leaves the win an option heading into the final session.

Being 4 down makes it pretty tough though, trying to attack with barely any recognised batsmen to come is probably too risky. I'd definitely rather they drew the game and played away than lost the match and missed out.

60/5 now Wade out. Gonna be tough with Lyon and Abbott bowling. No doubt Lyon will be bowling for most of the day.

Didn't Langer say "mediocre with flashes of brilliance?"

At least Dean seems like he has a composed head. I wonder what it means for Quiney though. Cam White will probably get pushed out as well.
