I think the fact that Frawley is likely to leave and since they'll be compensated with a pick after the one they have (so 2 and 3) means they probably won't get the priority pick.

What's your point? Fitzroy didn't need priority picks, they needed money to get out of the trouble they were in.
Melbourne is already getting money from the AFL and are in no danger of going under. The problems they have had are behind them and it's still going to take time to rebuild but the right people are in place and everyone can see the improvement this year

Of course Melbourne are in danger of going under, merging or relocating. A side can't be on AFL life support for ever, members can't continually decline indefinitely. What happens in the next TV negotiations when you have a team with almost no support?

Move to Tassie! Harsh yes, in the long run promoting Tassie & they have been screaming for an AFL team. Game every 2nd week surely would help with money side of things (relocation money from AFL, gate takings etc). Give them grace on Tassie as a whole for say 2 years (recruiting)

You guys seem to make out that Frawley leaving is a good thing for the club. We're losing our best defender, an experienced player and leader of the club for an untried, untested kid. Then you guys claim that that is such a great deal that we couldn't possibly get a priority pick on top.

Do not think that Melbourne deserve a priority pick based on their form this year especially if Saint Kilda, who imo deserve one, do not. They have shown plenty of promise this year and are rebuilding nicely.

Melbourne are also a youg team and sure they will make mistakes and get well beaten at times but it is a learning curve for kids and they only benefit.

All clubs have made some bad decisions recruiting wise and have to live with it. Brisbane should now as we are just finally recovering from the Fevola debacle.

So in summary Saints should get a priority pick and Melbourne maybe with plenty of arguments for and against.

for what it's worth I don't think we deserve a PP, but I really don't think Melbourne need one either. they are on the up. the stats prove this. so they have had a few dodgy games, they have also been impressive in few games, and that's without a bloke named Jesse Hogan. just sounds like a club rebuilding to me. they also have a pretty handy coach

I like David King's approach to the situation.

While many use the excuse that Melbourne already got a priority pick it means so much less than in many other sports which can make it really hard for some cellar dwelling clubs from pushing themselves from the bottom.

Compared to a sport like Basketball, where in a single draft, one good player as so much more impact to the team. Considering only 5 play on the field at a time, that player is 20% of the teams onfield output. In comparison, 1 good player in AFL is about 5% of a teams onfield output.

Who's to say that Melbourne has to get a pick straight after their first? Why can't they get one after their 2nd and 3rd round picks. It gives the club a lot more to work with
