While I agree he deserves the votes you have given him AK, I think you'll find Shaw won't get that many votes come Brownlow night. He played some ripper games last year and didn't poll a vote, so I think he will lose a few votes that you have him down for, which may push Ward up a little higher.

Fair enough but I have to my systems which have had great success making $ over the last 5 years.
Jelwood and Danger could both finish off the 2nd half of the year with a decent amount of votes I reckon, would have them finishing 1 and 2 by the end of the season I reckon.

Too addicted I know. I have gone through and watched every match I watch replays on the ones I miss so the second Saturday arvo game, 1 Saturday night game then they middle game Sunday. Even then watching on TV doesn't help that much as the umpires are so close to the play they pick things up differently

I went pretty good last year. Won some money off brownlow multis as well. last 2 years ive done it ive been pretyy close to the mark. Was only 1 vote of fyfes actual count last year.
At the end of the day your never going to get it exactly right, because your merely guessing someone (an umpires) opinion, and every ones opinions is different, Just got to try and look at it from there perspective when doing votes...

yeah it is good fun to track. yeah realistically, a ruckman doesnt have much of a sniff at winning it. Not impossible, but improbable. Even when goldy killed it that year i had him way unders compared to everyone else which proved right, the umps do stick to there guns and notice the high profile players for every touch they get..
Yeah could work, get like a fair few to do votes and work out an average and disitribute 3,2,1 from there !

I try to watch every game. There are a few every now and then that I don't watch the whole game but generally I watch every game.
Gets tougher in a few weeks though with tax season starting. Won't be able to watch as much football.

Yeah instead of allocating games, if you watched a full game then you get to put 3-2-1 up for that game, this will cut out limiting numbers involved so say if someone only watches 1-2 games a week they can still have some input. AK can be in charge of the spreadsheet as his is awesome (can email a template to me too if you want)! ;D

well I kinda guess he probably was. Greene kicked 2 late goals 3 in the last quarter but also nearly cost them the game with his inability to hit targets. Shaw was bad by foot along with most the GWS side and when the second half started Ward was the first one to stand up

IMO There are only 3 realistic winners. Selwood who I have on 20 votes and both Danger and Hannebery who I have on 17 votes.
Parker and Gawn on 16 are outside chances and everyone else is 12 votes or less in my projections and very likely too far back.
I did watch every game on the weekend. It helped with my tax updates training. My votes are below. The 2 and 1 votes in the Lions v Eagles were hard. The 1 vote in the Dogs v Cats was hard as well. IMO the rest were pretty much obvious.

My biiggest surprise is shuey on 18. I gave him the 3 on the weekend, but it was pretty tough to pick. All the eagles games are. I have kennedy on 13, gaff 11 and priddis 9. Priddis just missed the votes for me on sunday. Gave gaff 2 and kennedy 1.
I think AFL.com gave Pridda the 3, with 2 for Shuey and 1 for JJK so it just shows how everyone votes differently

I don't use Sportsbet, but that would be right
Each Way = Win or Place, which is essentially Top 3 finish and what you're after
Actually, afaik each way means half of your bet goes on for the win, and the other half goes for a place - maybe wait for someone else to answer lol

The mids bump the defenders down in brownlow votes. You always have to have a little bit more bias towards the mids when giving votes.
What AK said. I think after doing this for a few years you pick up how the umps vote. Mids and name players poll votes. Voss and Black won me a tonne of coin back in the day.
Also in regards to the placing bet, I think the actual option to select placing will open up after the rounds finished, hence why it's only letting you E/W it.

Depending on tomorrow's performances tomorrow Gawn and Priddis would be decent overlays to have very small bets e/w bets on at decent odds. Steven also with a BOG tomorrow could be one to consider.
I think Sloane is massive odds. I think he should be favourite and I will be having a decent crack at him this week.
With the crows draw he will keep racking up votes and he is easily spotted by the umps.
Danger/Selwood will take votes off each other and so will the other Swans mids from Hanners and Parker.
Dusty for me is too short. To justify his current odds he will need to poll more than the 4 votes I project he will poll in the first 9 rounds when Richmond were not playing very well.
The Bont has no votes on my projections in the first 6 weeks of the season. If he can nab a vote or 2 in those weeks where the dogs were playing brilliantly at Etihad he could also be over the odds and worth a small bet.

I'm thinking B. Crouch 3, Treloar 2, Sloane 1. Seems like Crouch was big early to set thins up, Treloar looks like he dominated in a losing side, Sloane just did his thing with tackles, but nothing overly special.
I gave Sloane 3, 2 to Grundy and 1 to B.Crouch but it is one of those games that it could go to anyone.

I got Fyfe at $2 last year and when GAJ won his last Brownlow I got him at $2.50 but they were absolute certainties so happy to cash in!
That's why I like to do Top 5 bets, group winners, most team votes etc because you can usually find a good roughie in those markets offering juicy odds
Last year I put $350 on Sam Mitchell to place, paying $3.75. Was pretty chuffed with that :) The year before I got Buddy at about $4 or so to finish Top 5 and collected there too
I've been betting on the Brownlow since Bartel won (Got him at $8.20 that year!) and there's only been 2 years where I have not profited (Cooney in 08 and Judd in 10)

The AFL site had an article which reckons it's pretty much down to Danger, Parker, Dusty and Sloane if I read it correctly.

I almost had a massive win back when the Lions won 3 in a row. Voss had a hamstring injury and was touted to miss 4-5 weeks, his odds went out to $301 so I put $25 on it. He ended up only missing 2 games with a bye in there and dominated. He was leading the count right up until the final round of votes. :'(
Team multi's should have some decent value this year, I think the bookies have a fair few wrong at this stage. Parker $5 is great value still. I got on him and Selwood when they were paying in the teens. Also got Danger to place preseason too which was paying around $3.

Based on history, Shuey and Parker will prob poll less than what everyone thinks including myself. I have Parker right up there, but Shuey still behind Priddis. Happens every year. A guy that really breaks out doesn't poll well in that year, its the following year they poll well.

I've watched every West Coast game too and have Priddis and JKK above him. Shuey will pick up loads of 1's and a few 2's here and there, not enough to win or place IMO.
I cant see dangerfield going any less than 30 votes this year. Will see what odds are on offer after round 23, anything above 2 and its good value. Top 5 bets is where it will be at.
Eagles votes are going to be hard, Shuey, priddis, gaff and kennedy will be hard to split. Priddis had had a very poor year compared to his last 2 seasons, so i cant see him polling that well. Would have him sub 15 for sure at the moment. Wont be chucking Eagles in my team multis thats for sure.

Parker is an interesting one. I have him much lower than every other predictor I've seen. But there is a lot of votes at Sydney to be shared amongst a small group Parker, JPK, Hannebery, Franklin. I have him in the 10-15th range and 10 votes off the lead.

Freo - Neale $1.16. Have him a long way in front of Fyfe but a lot of votes given in losses. Should win easy but won't take the

Geelong - Danger 1.03 then Selwood $14 - Selwood definitely worth a lobster on him. Danger ahead in my count but only by 1.
GWS - Coniglio 2.50 from Ward 2.75, Shiel 3.75, Shaw 6.50. I have Ward on 15, Conigs on 14, Shaw 11, Shiel 6. I don't like the chances of Shiel and Shaw doesn't have voting history. Conigs or Ward should win it and Ward has decent voting history. More multis will have Ward than Conigs but will have multis with both I think at this stage.
Gold Coast - Lynch $1.66, Hall $3, Ablett $4.50. I have Ablett and Hall on 9 and Lynch on 5. I won't be touching this market. I have a feeling the weighting of my votes has Lynch on less votes than he probably will get and have not betting confidence at this stage.
Hawthorn - Mitchell $1.19, Lewis $4.50, Gunston $21. Mitchell should win this one. I have him on 19, Lewis 13 and Gunston 8. Is he worth chucking in a multi at $1.19? I think yes.
Melbourne - Viney 2.25, Gawn 2.50, Jones 4.50. I have Gawn on 18 votes ahead of Jones 9 and Viney 7. I always tend to overrate top quality rucks in the count and Gawn has no real voting history but I am confident he has had a great year and will poll well. Will chuck him in a few multis.
North Melbourne - Goldy 2.25, Wells 2.75, Ziebell 5, Boomer 10, Waite 10, Cunnington 12. I'm not touching this market. I have Goldy on 12, Wells 10 then Cunnington and Waite on 5, Ziebell and Gibson 4. North tend to distribute votes evenly between their players and I never seem to get votes for them right.
Port Adelaide - Gray $1.22 - moral for most Port votes. Have him 19. Trengove next best with 7 (he isn't even in the market)
Richmond - Dusty $1.03 - moral for most Tigers votes. Cotch next best on 8. All rest 3 or less
St Kilda - Steven $1.12, Nroo 5. Have Steven on 17 and Roo on 11. Steven should poll most Saints votes but probably not one for me to include at that price yet.
Sydney - Hanners $2.15, Parker $2.50, JPK $5. Not touching this market. All the gun swans mids poll well and i always underrate buddy who always for some reason polls well. I have Parker 20, Hanners 17, Mitchell 11 and JPK 10
Dogs - Bont $1.30, Hunter 3.25. Bont should get most votes. Have him on 20 and then Hunter 12. I think I have over predicted Hunter's votes. Bont a good multi anchor.
West Coast - Priddis $2, Shuey $2.50, Gaff $5. I have Priddis on 19, Shuey 12 and Gaff 9. Priddis has very good voting history. Gaff does as well but probably hasn't had as good a year. Shuey recent years hasn't had good history. Priddis' price looks ridiculously good.

The more I think about it, the more I realise why rucks don't poll as well. Most of the time a great ruck has a huge hit out to advantage rate, however is that what the ump is looking for on the field in stoppage situations? Not exactly so these tend to go unnoticed. I think a ruck would have to be a huge possession winner or hit the scoreboard to get votes, and even then they aren't looking at rucks that spread from stoppages for a mark and quick handoff to a runner. I would be hesitant to pick a ruck for most votes based on this.
I actually went back and had a look at the voting trend for rucks based on possessions/goals/hitouts to votes for last season.
In the two games Max Gawn picked up votes he had over 17 possessions. He actually had a better statistical game against Essendon and a good one against Freo as well for 0 votes.
Todd Goldstein hit the 17 possession threshold in most games he polled votes, in the ones he didn't he either kicked multiple goals or he had 80 hitouts which is the record.
Stef Martin had over 19 touches in all the games he polled votes.
Matty Kreuzer had 17 and 3 goals in the game he polled 3 against the Dees.
Sandi is the interesting one. He had 11 touches, 33 hitouts and no goals for 2 votes, 10 touches, 70 hitouts and no goals for 1 vote, 17/50/0 for 2, 21/43/0 for 3, 17/38/2 for 3 and 14/43/2 for 3. He had a game with 69 hitouts where he polled 0 votes.
Looking at Gawn and Goldy this year and using 17 touches and up or multiple goals when they were under that threshold I have the following games that they will poll votes in.

The unfortunate thing is the game against North he probably gets 3 if Goldstein doesn't kick 5. The Richmond, Port, GC and Collingwood games all look like votes. The others he might get 1 at best.
It would be interesting if I could actually trace back some of those games where the rucks get 3 or didn't get any to see who was umpiring those games. You might find that guys tend to not give votes to rucks or the other way around.

Stef tends to be the odd ruck out when looking at it in terms of possessions because he would get a ton of the ball every week and isn't your traditional ruck. When I went and had a look at the guys who dominate stoppages 17 seemed to be the borderline number.
I just had a quick look at Nic Nat and these are his numbers from the games he got votes in.

Can't see where the rest of the votes go except Gawn though, Viney would be next, but he hasn't been consistent enough. If Gawn stays outside of $2 at least I'll still include him in multi's, but will avoid North for sure.

In both games v the pies I reckon he was miles in front BOG in both.
Crownbet has Quinellas up, Danger/Sloane paying $5.
Sportsbet has most team votes up. With Crows good run home $6 seems awesome. Currently have Crows on 82, Giants on 81, Cats on 72, Swans on 71, Hawks on 70. I'm going to throw some $$ on Crows at those odds.
I have Sydney on top in most team votes on 91 and 11 clear of 2nd placed GWS so I think the market has it right.

Sloane needs to play a blinding last quarter to get close to polling. Dusty probably 4th best player on ground today.

5 is way more realistic. I have this feeling that Shuey is going to be the player this year that doesn't poll as well as everyone things like Gray and Goldy past. Don't see him polling much early, but I can see him starting to get some recognition late in the season, won't past 20 votes IMO, and can see him polling less than 15, but Priddis isn't the lock I was originally thinking.

Yeah he is going to be hard to gauge, he is very inconsistent most years so polling has been poor. This year has been his most consistent so thinking he should go well. But will never know. Eagles have won a good chunk of games, and gaff and priddis votes will be well down on previous years, so the votes need to go to someone, and he has been better than both. I think Josh Kennedy will do well too. Those games where he kicks 6+ he will go close to 3s. Can see him being around 12-14. Shuey-Priddis-Kennedy-Gaff for me at the moment.
But as i said is a no deal for my main multis.

GWS - Throw a dart, lots of good players, not a lot with any voting history except Ward last year so very hard to predict. I have Coniglio @2.00 on 16 votes, Ward @3.25 on 14 votes and Shaw @$9 on 13 votes. Ward has the best voting history whereas Coniglio is really hard to judge how he will poll. Will likely back Ward in my longer odds multis. Stay away from Shiel @4.00 who I have on only 4 votes!

An absolute joke! I am fuming about this, this was in the contest and every football person on radio and TV have all said no case to answer. So how on earth do the MRP come to this conclusion! An absolute disgrace that this will probably cost him a Brownlow and could possible cost the Crows a top 4 finish. He should honestly appeal this because it is dead set disgusting!

I always thought if someone was suspended that they could still place cos I'm sure it's been the case in the past...but now Sloane has been taken off the placing bets list...however that could be due to suspension with possibility of an appeal. :-\

Im not sold on Gawn. Ruckman recently havent polled well, he has no history. I have him a 2 votes ahead of Viney but wouldnt be shocked if Viney beats him.

So I went and placed a few bets today at the TAB, but I have a question
I did a 5 leg Multi for most team votes
It says Super Multi, and then at the time it said $13.84 was the odds, but what I don't get is that on the ticket itself is says something like pays a return of 10,000% ???
I've never placed a multi before, so can anyone shed any light? I assume that what I did was correct :-\

True but Priddis had good brownlow voting history and Shuey does not.
I have Priddis on 21 votes polling in 10 games and Shuey on 16 votes polling in 9 games. Time will tell.
If Shuey has a similar year next season he will finish a lot higher.
Shueys year this year has been his best my a country mile. Thats why he hasnt polled as well in previous years. Priddis was a fair bit down this year compared to his previous 2. Yeah there's no disputing Priddis and Ward both poll well, which is a concern, but with Shuey paying $4 for Top 5 I'm happy to have a crack

Yeah but that situation was completely different. Gray was very average in previous years, and had a breakout year..
Shuey has been a well renown midfielder leading up to this year. The umps know him well already,and you throw into the mix a career best year and you will have someone who polls well. Easily eagles best mid this year.
I have to back in my analysis and 3-2-1s that I have been doing for the last 7 seasons.
Priddis most WCE votes will be an anchor in my multis.

Lynch is the only one I dont like of those. Lots of 4 and 5 goal games in big losses I dont think he will poll in. Easy their best player, but Hall could not poll after round 3 and win it. Agree with all the others, Cothcin is one of a few that could grt it without Martin

Priddis polls when you don't expect and has the last 2 yrs, don't see how this yr will be any different.

The lesson learnt and the educated guess is that Priddis should beat Shuey and is good value for your multis.

Yeah but that situation was completely different. Gray was very average in previous years, and had a breakout year..
Shuey has been a well renown midfielder leading up to this year. The umps know him well already,and you throw into the mix a career best year and you will have someone who polls well. Easily eagles best mid this year.
Not completely different! Gray then underpolled again the following yr, after his breakout yr.

You'd think most ruckman are noticable though wouldnt you? Golstein had polled 3 and 7 votes in two consitantly good years before his 18 last year. Cox who is the best ruckman of the last 20 years in my opinion only had 2 seasons of 10+ votes, and 18 and 12. Ive been burnt with ruckman before loke cox getting 5-6 votes in all australian years.
Yep I have Viney leading Gawn as well. Ruckman don't have a great history at all. Goldstein needed 3 brilliant years in a row to poll just 18. I can't see Gawn scoring any more than 12/13 votes. I reckon Viney will get that so should be close. Wouldn't be putting Gawn in any "safe" multis.

Wow. i think youve gone wayyyyy overs on GAwn. he didnt even win his clubs B&F and they more tend to reward key position players unlike the brownlow which is a midfielders award basically.

Only threat is Stephen Hill who historically doesn't poll as well as Barlow/Fyfe
Fyfe played the first 5 games, had 34 and 3 goals 2 in round 2 against GC (they lost so he might only get 1 or 2) then he had 26 and a goal in the round 3 derby (might get one or none) then had 27 and 4 goals in round 4 before breaking his leg in round 5
Barlow however had some big games but his big games were in Freo wins
Round 5: 32 possessions in a 4 point loss
Round 6: 33 possessions in a 30 point loss
Round 11: 26 and a goal in a 80 point win
Round 13: 43 possessions and 2 goals in a 24 point win
Right there Barlow is probably looking at 5-6 votes as well (has to get the three in round 13). He was also decent against Brissie in Round 12 but might not poll.
Hill played every game but lacked the massive games that Barlow/Fyfe had.
Round 2: 29 possies but Freo got pumped and Fyfe was Freo's best
Round 4: 24 and a goal but Freo lost and Fyfe was better
Round 17: Freo lost but he had 37 possessions so might snag a vote
Round 23: Might poll well here with 33 possies and a Freo win but Neale was BOG and Ibbotson & Boyd were excellent acorss HB
My two cents anyway... Was thinking of backing Barlow and Fyfe (one with a bonus bet) then have something smaller on Hill as cover. Can pretty much guarantee yourself profits provided Walters/Mundy don't go crazy

I've probably done all my betting as I like to get on early when the odds are a lot better and so I haven't had a chance to be influenced by anything else. Prob outlayed $500 give or take.

Yeah I hope so! That's what I mean about influence, I have Pendles just in front of Treloar, but then you see the odds come down and you start believing that Treloar is going to win. Betts without Sloane is another who has gone from $1.90 - $1.50. I'm sure there are a few more too, Gawn I think is another, was paying over $2, now is under that mark.
Yeah, i think a lot of people just literally multi the favourites because they just seem to be the ones that storm in.
Only one that hasnt really is gibbs and cripps and thats real close!

Zerrett and possibly Hunter are the threats I reckon, but Wards history is very good and $1.95 does seem to be good value
Ward in this group, and Conigs for most GWS votes at $2.20 both have me very tempted. They're the only 2 bets I'm considering on top of the 3 I've already done
Been a bit quiet lately lads...been destroying the TAB in brownlow bets.
FYI you can multi groups together as I did it last week.
I smashed Ward who opened at $2.75 in that group.
Also in the last group I have smashed Wells. He started at $5, into $4.25 but had a saver on steele who opened at $3.6 and now is into $2.9.
Bont has been smashed in Group A in te last 48 hours. Pass on Group A
Group B - Priddis started at $2.75 and has come into $2.1
Group C - Gawn is the market mover moving from 3.75-2.5
Personally ward in Group E is my big bet. Think he will poll around 15-18 votes and that should see him win, zerrett will be the only challenger but with ess winning few games it would be hard for Zach to do well with limited winning games and polling history...

Edit: looks like dead heat rules. 2 tied so returns 50% of total value of bet slip.
Frustrating when you get a $3.50 return instead of the $7, especially when the other legs that won were $5.60 by themselves. Anyway a $50 multi @ 3.50 is not too a bad return.

If you were to ask any West Coast supporter who watched every game they would prob rank our best players this year as Shuey, Kennedy, Priddis then Gaff. What we do know now if Gaff is a good poller as he polled well last year, this fact is now firmly implanted in the back of my head for future brownlow betting.

Gaff is one of my favourite players so I'm just a biased towards him :P I think he had more influence on games this year, disposal tally wasn't any higher than other years, but more damaging perhaps??

Above were my tips and results. Bold was correct and red incorrect including ties. 13/18 ain't too bad at all! Pity I couldn't turn it into top dollars! Things I took away from this years BL:
1. Gaff is a ridiculous poller
2. If Carlton finish in the 8 Cripps will win a Brownlow
3. Pendles time is over, Treloar is your guy now, Sidey the other.
4. Betts is obviously invisible to the umps.
5. Gray and Goldy got the knockon effect from being favourites in the past.
6. Neal polled incredibly well just like Cripps
7. Jelwood does not get enough recognition
8. JKK is pretty hungover today. ;D
Next year before the season starts I will start up a Brownlow thread where guys who watch each game can put there votes forward and I will average out the 3-2-1's. 8)
will be a tie next year
Nat Fyfe paying $13 is juicy for next years Brownlow.
Rough night. Got the tri any order but still didnt make it to break even. danger- dusty exacta just off which hurt.
Goldy losing to wells by 1 vote hurt. had laird (minus sloane) and hall winning their teams which were paying huge but then goldy cost me who i had them with.
Biggest surprise of night was shuey only polling 10 votes. easily a better season than the other 3 eagles and should win B&F. Had gaff 18 votes, kennedy 16 and priddis 17 so not far off them. but shuey getting 12 less than i thought was pretty effeed.
Also rance getting the 3 over dusty in round 20 cost me 480 bucks, had 30 at 16s on dusty, parker sloane to all poll 3 that round. Filthy that dustys 34 and a goal was given 2 to rances 26 possesions. rance must suck good d*** is all i can say.
All in all a fun night, and keen for next year already :)))))

Hall tied with Lynch, so that would have also somewhat reduced your payout.

Pendles has always polled less than what people expect. I was pretty confident on Treloar winning that one, unfortunately also had Priddis in that multi :(
