Hey guys was wondering how i can join in or coach my own team? how often do new leagues open? only really found out what happens in here recently when HP was asking me to be an assistant but yeah i want to get more involved
yeah, I'd like to be part of a team as well :)
Best way is to be an assistant to start with and then when a team opens up register your interest.

Thinking of doing a mentor role in British.
There are already 4 leagues and we've got the major competitions covered so I seriously doubt there will be any new leagues. The only way is to become an assistant (or co-coach) and then try and get a position as coach when somebody leaves/quits. :)

I still haven't fully grasped the concept of the XVs yet, but I like it and want to get involved. I'd be happy to jump on board any team willing to take me as an assistant coach. Probably won't be able to help in a totally helpful way, but maybe a bit of mentoring and whatnot would certainly be appreciated.

Well, since monstrum was the first to offer and I like the look of the challenge that may come with assisting the Lobsters, I'm in! Thanks to all the coaches that offered, was rather surprised to get any tbh, didn't think anyone would find taking a XVs noob on overly appealing. :P
Might look to expand my assistant coaching talents to other teams in other XVs comps after I get into the swing of things. 8)

I've now made the decision to accept an assistant coaching role with the Manila Folders in the AXVs as well as taking on the assistant coaching role that was offered to me by the Lobsters.
Glad to finally be getting involved and once again, big thanks to everyone for the offers and acceptance with open arms.

Yes I would agree with Jayman here. I would take a head coach role while it is available because it is not too often that they come up. Just make sure you get yourself some assistants with other experience and you should be right ;)

Read through the various threads for each of the xv's competitions. Take the initiative and approach them. I know I said I would like assistants in British and have now filled the positions. Know Tabs was still looking so maybe approach him.

Im after some help with my AXV team so offering a co - coaching role to someone committed enough to search out good trade deals, draft players, post the weekly team and update the team thread reguraly. I have no probs with being able to do those things on my own but having 3 teams to myself is prolly a bit unfair to you guys looking to get involved and think AXV is a good comp for someone to get started out on :)
Im not normally, but when it comes to any of my XV teams im prietty seriouse and due to the respect for CW's comp its not a position i will just give to anyone but if you get the gig i can see you eventually running the team with me just giving my opinion on things 8)
PM me if keen but as i dont go on player / trade boards much these days will ask a few of the more respected guys on there opinion as to who should get the gig ;)

This is true. Asian has had like 3 pass downs and Euros has had 4 since last season. Also Worlds and British have had people moving on. I hear Pickers has offered co-Coach role like I did in British. So if you want a team then I would ask him.

personally i'd love to be apart of the initial selection of a team it's a bit different then just taking over a team or expansion teams
if you are introducing a new comp then i would only make it available to new coaches thar dont have a team in other comps so people dont miss out.

yeah, it would be something like that- I'd lean towards 5 untouchables... if it's 10, then the expansion team will be scraping the barrel.
But if you're already shower (Valkaries) then losing your alright players will affect your side ahha :P

Euros. We only have 14 sides atm. So it was proposed 2014 and 2015 it increases.

The prestige of being the DT XV competition. Should only be one comp per scoring method. If we were to make a new comp each time a couple of coaches wanted to join we would have 20 comps within 3 years...

The prestige of being the DT XV competition. Should only be one comp per scoring method. If we were to make a new comp each time a couple of coaches wanted to join we would have 20 comps within 3 years...

more comps is unnecessary- we've had a pretty big turnover in coaches in euros, I think 6 have quit in the last year?

Yeah your right, won't work unless everyone halved there list. Eg. You delist your worst 20 players or so and then there is a draft fo the Div 2 teams. I don't think it will happen though
What is Americans joined SC and DT scoring into one? :o.

Lol nah a lot of people just angry with the idea.
We could do it on a different site, taking nothing away from the European 15s. As let's face it, the best part about these comps are the initial drafts IMO and even if these new coaches get positions elsewhere then they wouldn't have had the enjoyment of drafting their own side from scratch that they will in American XVs :)

yeah i agree, for me (I am an assistant in AXV, EXV and WXV) the thing I most look forward to when I become a coach is creating that thread to tinker with, and the whole drafting/trading process!

yeah, several teams have approached their team composition differently. And off season can completely change a team- holz got the spoon last year, this year he's contending for the premiership.
The actual season is just as fun as drafting.
After all the whole purpose is to win the flag.

I thought there was too transition this year with teams completely chagign strategy, wanted this period to sort out those issues. Teams look sorted now.

to be fair, last year goldy was a 100 averaging 21 year old ruckman.
that being said, the sons have struggled because they've had (4?) different coaches- each with a different recruiting strategy.

I think you will find a few of the coaches running multiple teams will be willing to hand one over after the season given the workload but I also forsee several coaches handing teams over as life gets in the way of fantasy footy.
It is a lot of contact and involvement in the off season and people don't always have time for what they need to do in the XVS comps.
hang around and stay interested opportunities will almost certainly arise.
The other option we can look at in each of the XVS competitions in time is adding in expansion clubs to bring all the 4 XVS competitions to a standard number of total teams each.
I am not sure how many each has but from memory WXV and BXS have 18 and EXV and AXV have only 16 so there is scope for new teams to be added to the existing competitions also.
not suggesting it will be easy but certainly can be arranged and probably will be. ( speaking for AXVs at least).
Good to see interest in the competitions it is a great way to keep involved in the site and footy in the offseason and a great simulation of running an AFL list in a relatively realistic way all year. not just during the seasons rounds.

AXV is already taken by Asia so maybe call it the United States XV or UXV.

Yeh thats the only fair way to give the people who don't already have a team a fair go! Dont know how you could do that when players would be doubled up when someone goes up or down leagues. Wouldn;t work unless the teams were reset every year!

Hmmmm its an interesting idea, but I don't think it would work. Players would all need to be drafted again, and when teams move up or down a league, you will start to get double ups of players, and not having them the same is one of the main parts of the XVs competitions.

i think people should only be head coach of 2 teams personally
i think if a reserves type thing is going to be made should be in WXV or EXV the 2 more popular comps
but yeah a new comp is just easier who cares what scoring it uses if enough coaches are interested why not some people are being a bit hmm cant think of the word about not having dupe scoring systems

Thanks for the comments guys. Very stimulating discussion and something to consider all round. Will have to reconsider 1st division and how to keep teams unique on promotion if it goes ahead as an example of points raised in discussion.
Not sure of the best way forward and not to stifle everyone’s enthusiasm will keep exploring possibilities.
Realise it is hard to give up teams so you would only have one team as coaches have spent time drafting and trading and want to keep team going forward. Especially in British and Asians as these are new competitions for this year.

Coaches drop out all the time so there is always going to be a chance to get a team in one of the leagues.

noto I know that, but that's the problem. Everyone just LOVES the draft stage of the competition, but then afterwards it doesn't matter as much to them and they want to start a new league so they can draft again.

I agree. Even though Euros is a good league, I was handed down a pretty shower squad and don't like it really. In British I drafted my own squad and now have the best team in the league and in Asian I drafted my own team and it will be an awesome team in 2-3 years. So I agree that drafting your own team is the best way. Hand downs suck tbh.

1) I would happily take a hand-me-down team. Holz went from finishing last this year in the Euros to drafting and trading a premiership winning team that is now favourite to win it. In only a season.
2) Coaches should only be allowed one team. It seams pointless making another comp when we have 4 boards for 4 comps and some people have 2-3-4 teams.
3) Once coaches have 1 team each, and others are still interested i think it would be great to start another comp.

I don't really care but I think the fact thos Ossie invented the XVS competition and the fact that it is effectively run on FF website you (new competition people) should contact Ossie / Monty and or moderators and seek permission/approval to start a new competition.
It is what we had to do for BXVS and AXVS and it is what is required now if you want to start another one, there is people who run the site and moderate it and these competitions are part of the site and need to be run through the appropriate people.
Simple. good luck with it, i just hope you have a very dedicated person to administer the competition you create if you do, and i hope like my competition you find 90% new coaches to run teams not just guys who already own teams in other competitions.
and i hope you manage to find 16-18 coaches for the teams that hang around and stick it out, which you might find a harder task than what it seems.
for the record i am all for "asking" coaches who own multiple XVS teams to hand them over but i think forcing them to is asking a little much and the risk is that they hand a team over to a new coach who pulls out in a month or 6 and we are looking for a new coach again.... when we already had a dedicated one we could count on....
as for hand me down teams, this is an AFL coach/manager simulation competition all AFL coaches and recruiting managers in real life inherit existing lists so why would you want it any other way :)

I reckon if people picked there own team, they would be more inclined to keep it and manage it. It makes it funner because they have the players who they personally chose and then they can manage their team from there on out.

Agreed, happy being a part of a team now (Go the Lambs) but looking forward to the next step, new or taking over suits me.

what about a comp where there is a new draft each year then?
I don't see a big problem with the growing FF forum of a second comp based on SC or DT, as long as there was the interest from newer members looking to get involved, it would just be in a different part of the world, same players and scoring but in a different comp
Really what would be the harm in that?
Oh and a shamless plug for the mighty Llamas, the best youthful team on earth still needs an assistant ;)
i bet if we were to post about the comps in players and trades section to get more interest heaps more would want to be involved how dedicated they would be is anyones guess as in being here all year round

It's not as big of an issue as it was when we were all crammed into one board, that being said, we've already run out of major scoring systems. You could double up, but that would cheapen it...
it's not change, I didnt have massive issues with british or asian, I just dont see the necessity for a new comp at this stage, especially when it's relying on current coaches like lez to take positions :P
Logistically and from experience it will be difficult to get a new competition up and running for 2013. This is from experience as to how long initial draft takes.
As a compromise can I suggest the following and please feel free to disagree:
At the end of 2013 we undertake a review of the four competitions.
This will involve getting commitment from all coaches to the relative competitions.
Ask coaches with multiple teams if they wish to relinquish any of their teams. - Stress will be voluntary not forced. Personally speaking I would like to give up my British, as administrator to maintain independence, but as I drafted the team would like to see out the first season. Bear in mind this will be the first season of British and Asians.
Invite applications from coaches for teams that are available with preference being given to Coaches without a team. Applications to follow the process outlined for each competition.
Set a specific period for this to occur and delay trading until finalised so any new coaches not disadvantaged,
If the last couple of years are any indication there will be coaching vacancies as a result of sackings etc occur through out the season as well.
Just a comment I do not think there is any stigma taking over a team as we are trying to make as realistic to AFL as possible so the challenge is there to lift team. Enjoying the challenge of trying to lift my World XV team I took over mid season last year. Think that is more of a challenge than drafting a team personally.
Also I think some coaches lose their enthusiasm for the team after the initial draft and as a result teams suffer.
Lastly bear in mind the intention of these competitions are to reflect as close as possible AFL rules so they are long term competitions not one season wonders.
I honestly can't complain now that I think about it, since I'm actually co-coach of Cairo in the WXVs competition. However, as a suggestion for others, and I'm not sure whether this is already in place or not, but if another competition doesn't get opened any time soon, maybe set up a waiting list? :)
Being relatively new to FF, i commend the inventors of these competitions and how they are run.So i totally understand the
interernal pressure to preserve and maintain the uniqueness and quality of them.The idea of starting a new team from scratch and for all the processes involved from drafting,trading,maintaining and future forsight makes it very appealing to get involved.
Correct me here if i am wrong,the issues seem to be that once the initial excitement of the draft and trading has gone that initial enthusiasm drops off in some.Maybe as i see it,a lot of trades are made for the future, 2- 3 years down the track as it happens in the Afl,to keep interest in your team while its rebuilding does wane in some.
Imo to be allowed 1 team per FF member would probably maintain the quality of the competition and allow new members the opportunity to get involved.Maybe this could be revisited after 3 years of good history and put to a vote.
To get new people on board brings new ideas and enthusiasm with it ,which can only be a good thing.
I also take my hat off to good blokes like Nigeys,his enthusiasm and eagerness he brings to the table at FF should be commended.

I totally agree Maca.As much as i would like to get involved with a new team,the comps in place now need to be up and running successfully first.Whats the old saying,Too much of a good thing and the shower hits the fan.
Well last year I was trying to give away my British team, but no one wanted it. Now I have traded in quality and will be top 4 and see myself winning, so I don't want to give it up anymore :P
Just letting you know Macca - Am doing my best to make British succeed but with all the changes we have had to go through is trying. Hoping once the comp gets started will get an idea of the real interest when teams have to be lodged. may get an indication when Team lodgements are required as well.

Yeh limiting to one team each would work. And i agree about not having one for this year. Im talking maybe for 2014. But if some coaches gave up a team or so then the new comp wouldn't be needed with an adequate trading period :)

BXV is fine and will succeed most of the coaches are fairly enthusiastic about it but there are a handfull not pulling there weight

But there are 3 drafts every year (National, Preseason, Rookies) + 2 trade periods in the Worlds. So this 'I want to draft my own team' thing seems a bit weird.

Well you had guns like congs, Shiel, etc and used them to get good players. Then got a stupid trade in Whitfield for Barlow ::) as a result you gained better older players for these young guns.

I'm in agreement with os and zip regarding having 1 team. I'm happy just having my team in the worlds, and yes I know I am part of the Bison in the EXV, but it took a while for LH to convince me to become an assistant there.

Everything that gets done for the team is discussed with LH. Never done anything he hasn't wanted me to do and he has conducted trades without me, so would say he is still the coach.

hmm have you been on much during the pre season?
the Birmingham Bombers are happy to take on just about anyone but being active like coming on every 2 or 3 days all year round is a requirement unless there is a valid reason of course

I have a job which requires me to sit on a computer on the internet all day so activity won't be a problem.
Have been quite active on FanFooty the past couple of seasons (joined in 2011) and posted my RMT the day Dream Team opened.
Only thing is i'll need a bit of education on these comps and how they work/strategy/what my role will be.

The more I see/read about the XV leagues the more I like it and am keen to get involved.
Is it possible to become and assistant for more than one team (obviously in different leagues). I have noticed there seems to be some coaches who have teams in more than one league.
If so is anyone in the World XV, Europe XV or British XV willing to give me a chance as well?

Considering what it has been through, doing an awesome job Ringo! Just had alot of downs so would have been tough this off season. Haven't been following it too much, but had to help out the Bunnies due to Boomzie having problems with his net.

I have a the Iceland Polar Bears (Euro's) and PNL Reindeers (World's) but as my assistants know (some overlap) I want to pass down PNL to one of them :). I don't mind keeping it within the coaching staff seeing as all of them besides KB don't own a team. Think sometimes they should get first preference if they've been with the team over a period of time (such as Daz who was my first assistant recruited and still with me in both!). I agree with most as to allow only 1 team per person, maybe 2 at a max. Allows others to get involved with the amount of interest :).

Lol I was once upon a time. Had no idea MTTY was no longer coach until a fair while after he stepped down.
Just goes to show how good of an assistant I was lol, don't think I will assist anymore, I don't like having less than 100% control :P
Assiting is a thankless job and i take my hat off to all the assistant coaches in all the XVS competitions, these guys don't get the ultimate say, or control or full credit for success.
there is much they can do and lots to be involved in, but i DEFINITELY agree with Holz, these guys should all be in the forefront of everyone's minds when teams become available if they want to take on a team.

I completely agree with everything you have said here Colli. My assistants do a great job and sometimes don't get all the recognition they deserve, so hats off to you nrich and Nigey.
I also agree that coaches should probably only have one team each. But, I would at least like to see the first season through as head coach with the team that I have drafted. I will probably look at giving up one of my teams then.
same i need a season to see which of my 2 teams is worse ill keep the one that wins the spoon and give up the other :)
i think having 2 teams is ok mainly because i want another team lol

yeah but you do ask you assistants alot and keep them involved almost to the point of co-coaches :)
as most would kbow especially on the chat Trade talks trying to convince Daz so it gets done 8) lol

I think we're a chance to be big improvers this season. Sneaky chance at top 4 perhaps? :P I haven't looked into last season enough to see how much we can or have to improve, but I plan to do that soon. :) ML could probably give a better assessment of where we're at and how 'shower' the team is. :P
