Title: WXV Round 17: Change at Christchurch

It's been nearly a year since these two clubs were involved in the grand final; one team is likely to be there again, the other will ponder what went wrong in 2019. The Wolves have rebuilt the respect they lost that day, and that's the only incentive for this match given the minor premiership is a sure thing. Dublin is out for blood this week too, so this would be a satisfying win for both clubs. I choose... Toronto.

The Tigers let a spot in the 4 slip last week, but they can regain it with a win here and if either Berlin or Cairo lose. It'd be weird if they only made the eight on percentage, which is what will happen if they lose against Pacific. The Islanders have everything to play for meanwhile, where a loss will spell the end of their season, and a win SHOULD get them into finals. I just think the Tigers will have the answers in this clash.

The two remaining teams in World Idol face off in the penultimate week for my MATCH OF THE ROUND! The Thunder will almost certainly finish 2nd on the ladder regardless of the result, but the World Idol presents itself as the first real piece of silverware in the clubs history and they will go all guns blazing to secure it. For Seoul - just wow. Their last 3 weeks have been absolutely inspiring, with their latest feat the most impressive in claiming the Wolves. HGA against is a tough challenge to overcome, but god damn, if you think this is the week I turn against Seoul for the first time in the year, you're DEAD WRONG! COME ON SEOUL!

Ah. Tokyo, my arch nemesis. Everything fell my way last week, seeing Berlin climb to its highest Round 16 position ever at 3rd place. This is flowering prime real estate, which I'm very interested in retaining. However, I just have this sinking feeling that Tokyo are going to rear their ugly head on me for the nth time and flower it all up for me. Even one of the guys they stole from me - Fritsch - has turned it on just in time for our clash, and the 164 they scored two weeks ago I just know was meant for me. Bring it on Boomz. I'm coming to play this week. I back us.

The Cobras have one, last, chance, but have to rely on results falling their way in order to make finals. Obviously, they have to win this week. Tey also need Pacific to lose against New Delhi, which is probably likely, or Rio to lose against New York, which is less likely. The equation is just about the same for Moscow, but sit prettier with a better percentage. Can Cape Town collapse over the line? I think Moscow win here, and make finals.

The Revolution, as mentioned above, have quite a role to play despite facing a bottom 5 finish for the year. If they beat the Jaguars this week, Moscow or Cape Town - and potentially Pacific - will owe them a trade sweetener. Rio really have toed the line in a finals campaign which looked assured just 3 weeks ago, but have their fate in their own hands where a win will see them make finals. Even a loss, they could get lucky and scrape in. I want to tip New York :P but I think Rio score 160+ this week and enter finals as the dark horse!

The last two teams of the comp face in each other on the eve of defining trade seasons, which will either seem them compete next year or slug it out again in 2020. The Saints have been waiting for the off-season ever since the last one ended, and with new management itching to get started, there is a sense of optimism about Christchurch once again. One gets the feeling that the Reindeers are also about to embark on serious change, but just need the courage to make it. A loss here will see PNL get a priority pick, but a win will get them respect. I'll back the Reindeers.

The Royals - much to the delight of my prediction - have taken the opportunity to climb in the back third of the season, with now 3 wins on the trot! Against the Dillos, they have the opportunity to take their season tally to 8 wins - which really, is only 2 away from competing in finals next year! A strategic trade period will get them there in 2020. The Dillos I'd say fizzled where we wanted them to pop, with a disappointing end to the season which - for a while there - looked like it might last til finals. Both clubs are eyeing off win 8, and I think London get it.

The Sands amazingly jeopardized their top 4 placing with an oddly predictable loss against London, but New Delhi's loss against Dublin has seen them stay in... for now. If Cairo lose, they still might make the 4, but leave themselves vulnerable to Seoul & New Delhi who might get up against their tough opponents. The Suns have heated up in the last third of the season, but missed an opportunity to capitalise with a loss against PNL last week. They MUST think they're a good chance against Cairo here, with a 145 average between rounds 12-15. Despite wanting to see the drama, I think Cairo consolidate their top 4 position here.

A reminder that you CANNOT REST a player this week for either finals, or Round 1 next year.

Seoul would be absolutely thrilled with last night I reckon!

After Saturday

Score Summary
Toronto Wolves (1020) from 9* vs Dublin Destroyers (1219) from 12#
New Delhi Tigers (816) from 10 vs Pacific Islanders (764) from 8#
Beijing Thunder (1235) from 13# vs Seoul Magpies (1101) from 11
Berlin Brewers (647) from 7# vs Tokyo Samurai (900) from 11
Cape Town Cobras (579) from 8# vs Moscow Spetsnaz (1127) from 13#
New York Revolution (676) from 8 vs Rio de Janeiro Jaguars (1406) from 13#
PNL Reindeers (560) from 9 vs Christchurch Saints (432) from 7#
London Royals (1060) from 12# vs Buenos Aires Armadillos (544) from 7
Cairo Sands (968) from 11# vs Mexico City Suns (1057) from 12#

# = Captain Played
* = one Co-Captain Played
** = two Co-Captain's Played

That's one scary looking team. Dublin doing well, but Toronto are just going gang busters.

The Islanders are hanging in there, but one thinks they needed a bigger score from Captain Lyon. If Lloyd goes sub 80, I think Pacific get up. But I don't think Lloyd goes sub 80.

Seoul are just absolutely flying at the moment! If Danger goes 150, they could get the highest score of the year, which would be a fitting way to win the World Idol. Beijing probably go sub 150 and lose this one I reckon.

flowerin Baker... with that said, it could be worse. Gawn has kept me alive, and my better players are all still to come. If Dunkley does his thing tho, then I'm flowered. Doesn't look great, but I back my Freo/Syd contingent to get me over.

Well, it was a nice season whilst it lasted for Cape Town. It's disappointing too, given that Moscow will struggle to post 130. Still, 2019 was a big step forward, and the Cobras will get ready for another one in 2020.

Rio have put the doubters to bed, and are eyeing off 160 with a bit of luck! In some weeks New York's effort would be troubling Rio, but roller coaster is currently up at Rio.

Jeepers. PNL probably wi... score more points than Christchurch this game.

A Luke Parker 120+ is needed by the Dillos, but I just think London has scored enough points for Saad, English and Luko to bring it home.

This is the interesting game! Assuming HGA of 28, Cairo are 61 behind with one less played. Gee you'd have wanted more from Dunstan, but then again one couldn't have possibly thought flowering Brayshaw would be set to tag him of all people. Hunter, Miles and Hill are good cattle... I think it depends on Lobb and Ellis here. Fancy that. Top 4 hinging on Lobb and Corey Ellis. I'll tip Cairo in the hope of a jinx.

To teach me a lesson put Dublin at the 8th seed i think.

That way i lose my top 5 pick.

Congrats to Mexico and whoever gets the reward of playing us next week, we're cooked.

Only had to beat one of London or Mexico, instead we've lost to both.

No hope next week. Hope you're happy Purps.

A little guilty now. I just needed you to lose one of those games, and both if I lost to Tokyo.

But certainly not unhappy.

King Toronto

All hail to the clear minor premiership winners, who have posted the season-high score on the eve of finals! That's the kind of intimidating form that gets the metal edge in finals. They'll need it though - no minor premiers EVER in Worlds has gone on to win the flag.

The Destroyers will be very encouraged with their late season form though, and will be entirely confident of putting a season from hell behind them and challenging next year. In the mean time, I'll enjoy a finals series without Dublin. See you next year!

Tigers claw into a QF

Oh boy, this was closer than you'd like. New Delhi had to rely on HGA to get over the line, and that was with Pacific playing 1 man short! But, the body of work has already been done for the Tigers, and deserve to be in the top 4 going into August.

For the Islanders, they finish in the dreaded 9th position. The pre-season injury of Tom Mitchell has proven telling, and ultimately the difference between making finals and not. They'll be back bigger and better next year. Farewell Pacific!

Seoul Sebastian!

Ah, the dreaded Nollsy. The Thunder rallied on Sunday, but couldn't peg back the Magpies who were well served by McEvoy and TJ Lynch. A marvelous Idol campaign, matched by their H&A season and will host a home QF next week.

But zomg Seoul! An average of 154 in the last month of their season saw a 50/50 finals chance turn into a 5th place, knocking off Pacific, Toronto and Beijing in order to do so! The in-form team of the comp? Toronto may argue that, but whatever, GO SEOUL!

The last mental demon defeated. I'm ready.

For the Samurai, they troubled the very best this year but are still plagued by a crippling inconsistency. Their ceiling proves that they have what it takes, they just need to round it out in one good trade period. I look forward to seeing what you produce next year, but until then, farewell!

Moscow Rise; Cape Town sink

A devastating last month for Cape Town sees them miss out on a finals series that really looked like would eventuate for a time there. Toby Nankervis injury absolutely killed them, reminding teams that we're all vulnerable. I reckon 2020 is the year. Farewell Cobras!

For Moscow, yep, they don't have the best form-line. But, they've done it; they've made finals! That is a great achievement, and they will pose a much greater threat when one Sam Docherty returns. But, dare to dream I say!

Rio ravage Revolution

The Revolution should be proud of that performance; a HGA of 61 is a great outcome, and with nothing to play for, they would have troubled the average team this week. But, Rio clearly had a point to prove a finals spot to consolidate. A huge performance from Rio, and will go into finals with great momentum! But for now, we say goodbye to New York, who have now completed year 1 of the rebuild.

PNL capitalise on Christchurch

... and even when PNL win, they lose, now ineligible for a priority pick. It's been a shockin year for the Reindeers, who need some quality D3s, M3s, F3s and a playing ruck before doing anything serious. For Christchurch, the challenge is MUCH greater. But, these two teams are up for the challenge, and I'm sure they'll hit the trade period hard. Good luck coaches!

Royal Result

A great win from London, and really what a great final month! They have won each of the last 4 matches to double their 2018 tally. This year was a serious step forward, and London will be looking for the same result next year. Just another 2 wins until finals!

The Dillos won only 1 of their last 7, indicating that they are still very much a young team. But the hard work has already been done I reckon, they have the list, just need the time. But that won't stop iZ going hard at the trade period. Early 2020 tip, Dillos to make finals!

Farewell teams!

Suns glass Sands

The Sands claimed so many big teams this year, but have an uncanny ability to lose to teams that for the most part, score sub-130 this year. Lucky there isn't any of those from now on, I suppose! Still, they just needed to beat either London or the Suns to finish top 4, and they let it slip. Hard to swallow, but finals is still a great result, and they should be proud!

The Suns finished the year in sensational fashion, with 4 wins coming out of the last 6 matches. The Suns are building towards something... is this deja vu? God, surely not. I look forward to see what you do over the off-season and beyond! Good luck Mexico City!
