HAWTHORN has suffered a massive blow with Josh Gibson out for 12 weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

Gibson limped off Etihad Stadium on Sunday after hurting his hamstring in his first marking contest of the match with Bulldog opponent Barry Hall.

The former Kangaroo was recruited to fill a void in the Hawks' defence left by the long-term foot injury to Trent Croad, which eventually forced Croad into retirement before the start of this season.

Sunday's match was Gibson's third for his new club.

He will have surgery today to repair a damaged tendon.

Hawks General Manger Football Operations Mark Evans said the surgery would sideline Gibson for up to 12 weeks.

“Josh has a high-grade hamstring tendon injury,” Evans said.

“After consultation last night and this morning with our club medical staff and surgeon it was determined that a surgical procedure will deliver a better outcome than non-surgical options. Josh will have surgery later this evening

It's an unlucky break for Gibbo, but the Hawk's defence is looking quite fragile now without Gibbo.
