Title: New forum layout
Post by: m0nty on March 25, 2015, 02:38:41 PM
Pretty much the same as the old forum layout, just inside the new design (the Gameday theme for Wordpress). No doubt there are a few display bugs I am yet to iron out; please post them here and I will get to them.

The jQuery Mobile interface for SMF has no ads, it should appear for mobile and tablet users.

The actual forum only took up 1/3 of the screen on my phone - The rest was just blue

Also half of some posts were just cut off

For instance, I just put the old stars back in.

I use the "mark as read" all the time, but that's just moved to the right so no biggy

I don't like how threads with multiple pages, the page numbers get bigger each number

Also, on the forum homepage the AFL section, the teams go all the way to the right, they need to fit under the section

Why fix something that wasn't broken?
Title: Re: New forum layout
Post by: RaisyDaisy on March 27, 2015, 04:43:10 PM
I think what will help me the most is changing the default font

The Section headers seem to be in the normal font, but the topics titles, time stamps and all other fonts look like times new roman which makes it looks cramped and ugly

If you can get the fonts back to the normal font then that should make a big difference

Mac, when you finish studying and enter the workforce you will see that this happens all the time

People like changing things just for the sake of changing them

If there are genuine improvements by doing this than fantastic, but if its just for the sake of doing it and provides no new benefit then its useless

The thing annoying me most is having that G'day message along with the inbox on the right side of the screen, I'm so used to looking at it on the left. In addition to that, it feels like it's super cramped in that space. It also seems weird that my pic/gif is visible, but half of it is cut off.

Also, maybe it's just me, but the does the actual forum look smaller now? If it isn't, i must just be the blue background making it feel smaller.

I like how my avatar pic is at the top right

In regards to the forum looking smaller, a lighter background colour and reverting back to the old, smaller font will fix all of that

I do like how sticky topics stand out now :)

I have added "Unread" and "Replies" buttons to the grey nav bar at the top.

The main reason for the change is to conform to the new design... couldn't go on with the old design, you have to get everything looking the same. There will be teething problems but I am fixing things you guys suggest. May not get to it all today, though.

Title: Re: New forum layout
Post by: Purple 77 on March 27, 2015, 05:04:53 PM
Open to the change, can see things I will get used to.

Just with the "new" symbols in the main page that have been introduced, I don't know about anyone else, but the bolded blue text indicating a new post has been made would be enough for me, on the main page that is.

It's just I don't go everywhere on the forum so having these "new" symbols everywhere on my main page might enrage my OCD and force me to mark them as read in an everlong losing battle.

I also find the font whilst typing a message off-putting, but overall I reckon I can get used to the changes :)

This one is based on the OverviewLight theme, which is minimalist which is the style I prefer. If you want to suggest a better one, be my guest.

The colour scheme can be changed depending on your account options from the main site.

Ah okay.

Something like this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2805), this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2436) or even this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2329) is pretty simple and would be good enough.

Not saying to specifically use any of the three hyperlinked above, but they're general examples of what I think would look a bit better.

I personally like the bolder, more colourful ones, but those ones above are probably more suited.

Title: Re: New forum layout
Post by: m0nty on March 27, 2015, 06:12:00 PM
I'm trying to keep the theme colour-neutral, as there is so much colour customisation available in the account options. A colourful one would mean changing all the colours in the theme to suit each team, which would produce unpredictable results (like those ugly blue headings).

Ah yeah, I didn't think of that.

I still feel there's gotta be a better option than the current one, however I'm not sure which one exactly, but you'd probably know what would suit and work best with the other aspects of the site (like the account stuff).

Kind of wish this was tested before being launched

What was the rush? Always better to perform testing to iron out all bugs and launch it new spot on the first time

Please change the font asap :) (Font that our posts are in is fine - all the fonts used on main forum section headers and thread headers need to be changed from TNR)

I'll try shoehorning the old layout in to the new design, so as to minimise disruption.

Anyone who was worked in businesses introducing new systems would have been involved in UAT so not really a new concept. Purpose of UAT is to find flaws and fix prior to introducing.

If I had a building full of employees to set that sort of stuff up, plus months of preparation to create a professional software shop, I would.

In the absence of that, you're going to have to deal with it being just me doing things my way.

If I had a building full of employees to set that sort of stuff up, plus months of preparation to create a professional software shop, I would.

In the absence of that, you're going to have to deal with it being just me doing things my way.

entirely your right to do it all by yourself, but you have likely dozens of people willing to help you for free because they enjoy the site you created. I'd encourage you to utilise, or at least communicate, with this resource and who knows you may get a building full of employees one day.

Agree with Oss here m0nty.

Not being 100% technically over all that is involved but based on my experiences with UAT all that is involved is setting up a test environment and giving testers access, Not sure the technicals behind from your perspective but as Oss said there are a number who would be willing to test for free for you.

I appreciate the thought fellas, but running a test server just complicates things from my end. I've got way too much to do as it is.

If you want to help out, find someone who can make a cross-platform mobile app.
