Title: WXV Finals Week 1: Brewers & Wolves to make numbers, or post them?
Post by: Purple 77 on July 27, 2021, 08:26:24 PM
This is finals.

Friday night FULL LOCKOUT at 7.10pm AEST

FOUR EMERGENCIES PERMITTED

Qualifying/Elimination Finals, AFL Round 20

Home Team                             Away Team                             Venue                                                                                 Head-to-Head
Seoul MagpiesPNL ReindeersSeoul World Cup Stadium8  v  2
Mexico City SunsPacific IslandersFireball Stadium7  v  3
Cape Town CobrasToronto WolvesNewlands Cricket Ground4  v  6
Dublin DestroyersBerlin BrewersCrooke Park9  v  2

Seoul v PNL
Head-to-Head: 8 v 2
Last time they played (Round 7): PNL Reindeers (21.6.132) lost to Seoul Magpies (21.8.134)
2021 Head-to-Head: 8 v 9
Purps' Takeaway: The second-half season kings v the first-half season masters go head to head in my MATCH OF THE ROUND! PNL for much of the year were the highest scoring team but a lapse in the past fortnight allowed Seoul to surge past them in that facet of the game. The Magpies really have timed their run to perfection, having scored a whopping 153ppg in the past 5 weeks! So it comes as no surprise that 4 of the 8 'would-be' wins against PNL in 2021 have come in the past month alone. The Reindeers are almost a perfect inverse of Seoul... is it poor timing, or a master resting of players? All I'll say is that whilst Seoul come into this game as the red-hot favourites (as all undefeated minor premiers should be)... they are due for a bad one, and PNL a good one.  But, I'm obliged to tip Seoul every game, so Seoul for me.

Mexico City v Pacific
Head-to-Head: 7 v 3
Last time they played (Round 6): Mexico City Suns (23.10.148) def Pacific Islanders (21.11.137)
2021 Head-to-Head: 8 v 9
Purps' Takeaway: Having just gone (indirectly) head-to-head for the World Idol last week, all of a sudden there is a bit more heat in this match-up! They've matched up well this year; Pacific would have beaten Mexico City 9 times this year, but that wasn't the case the last time they met. In fact, Pacific haven't beaten a fellow top 4 team so far this year, so maybe there's a mental edge here for the Suns? If it wasn't for a weird, out of nowhere 127 last week, I would have said Mexico City were the form team of the competition in the past 5 weeks, so was last week a tactical rest, or have the Suns hit the wall? I tend to think the former. The Suns are my tip for the flag this year!

Cape Town v Toronto
Head-to-Head: 4 v 6
Last time they played (Round 8): Toronto Wolves (20.8.128) lost to Cape Town Cobras (21.10.136)
2021 Head-to-Head: 10 v 7
Purps' Takeaway: The 2021 head-to-head is way more even that I expected. The Cobras were right in the top 4 conversation for much of this season... hang on, have they really only topped 150+ once this year? That surprises the hell out of me! The Cobras injury list has had a say on the output, but they had a strong season and will back themselves over the Wolves this week. Toronto find themselves in the 8 just at the right time, having last featured in it in Round 10. It's very rare (actually, I'd have to check whether it has happened before) that a team gets into finals with 8 wins, but they join the Brewers this year with that ledger and... like them... risk simply making the numbers this year. A win would put to rest all of that talk though, and Toronto are certainly capable. Heck, the 2021 h2h suggests they are a 41% chance to win this game, but I won't go past the Cobras on this one.

Dublin v Berlin
Head-to-Head: 9 v 2
Last time they played (Round 2): Berlin Brewers (21.7.133) lost to Dublin Destroyers (23.9.147)
2021 Head-to-Head: 7 v 10
Purps' Takeaway: Dublin played the 2021 season very well. They carried mass injuries at times, but managed to keep the scoreboard and win-ledger ticking at the right points of the year. Although they have scored 140+ just once in the last 8 weeks, it was a 151 against Cape Town 2 weeks ago, so they're gearing up. For me... it's weird. I scored the 6th most points this season, but I feel like a fraud making finals given my 126ppg average in the past 3 weeks. I had 2 good 5-game streaks this year, going from 3-6, to 8-6 to then rest at 8-9. It's like my team sprints, then has a rest, sprints, rests... etc. And boy, has my last 3 weeks been a rest. We're ready to avenge my missed 2019 flag. Sure, we'll do it the hard way, but no part of WXVs is easy. We're going to prevent Dublin notching its 10th win over us, and GO ALL THE WAY! LFG!

And don't forget reserves!

There are 5 teams (Tokyo, Christchurch, London, Moscow and Cairo) who have made Reserves finals but not the seniors.

You may name an indicative senior team if you wish (or I will), which will be used to determine who will not play in your Reserves side. Obviously, this senior team must consist of players you would be naming if you were playing senior finals.

Seoul's Deadly Duo

A masterclass performance by co-captains Oliver and Steele have lead Seoul to a comprehensive victory over the Reindeers.

It was almost over on Friday night as PNL had to carry and injured Dougal Howard whilst CC Steele went bananas, and when the likes of Luke Jackson are scoring 141, you know PNL were never winning this one, despite captain Zerrett (BOG with 168) valiant response.

The Suns sent 10 centurions to a brutal, violent murder of visiting Islanders. This is one helluva scorecard to look at; nothing the Islanders could do here.

Wolves break free of Cobra Grip

What a game! Heroes everywhere for Toronto, BOG Rowan Marshall, Captain Macrae, and Sunday heroes McInerney and Prestia were able to JUST get over the Cobras who left too much for too few.

For Cape Town, it feels too early to say goodbye, but here we are! They'd be disappointed going out in the elim, but they have a list that will clearly challenge once again in 2022. But until then, adieu!

Brewers break Destroyers

YES! What a wonderfully timed effort by my team, and with Toronto, it doubles up as a title salute! It was a 14-man effort, that will need to be backed up next week against Pacific.

For Dublin, a lack of clear captain option hurt once again, as whilst they had many serviceable scores, they didn't have anyone to go on with it. Add in a few below-par performances, and it makes for a disappointing way to end the season. It will be very interesting to see what the Destroyers do next.
