Team A defeats Team B 2 nil, and then again 2-1 in the next leg.
Team A defeats Team C 3 nil, then has a 1-1 draw the next time.
Team A loses to Team D 1 nil in both legs. .

Team A finishes with 10 points and a goal difference of +4.

Team B loses to Team A 2 nil, and then again 2-1 in the next leg.
Team B defeats Team C 4 nil, and then again 3 nil.
Team B defeats Team D 2-1, then has a 2 all draw the next leg.

Team B finishes with 10 points and a goal difference of +5.


Team A is clearly the better team since they beat Team B both times they played so they should progress.

That is the extream of the rule favoring team B, in most cases comps are not in this situation and the goal difference should be the deciding factor. Why is it then most other sports do favor the team with the bigger scoring gap?
