At the start of the year I thought we might struggle to make the top 4. Missed out on the minor premiership by percentage and now we're in the big one. It's an understatement to say the task in front of us is huge but anything can happen.
Best of luck guys, let's hope it all goes as planned aka 2012 ;)
Sydney by 10 goals. Heard it here first.
Best of luck in the big one. Surely its our turn to win one

Dunno, a little bit of pessimism about backing up from another GF plus losing Buddy.

Hale probably has a year or two left as well?
I reckon Big Boy might be happy about that. :P
Hale contracted until next year. We'll see how he goes but I reckon if we manage him a bit he could squeeze out another year after that.
Good luck to Box Hill!

yeah but i agree with Stew.
Losing to Giants and North in first 3 weeks, it wasnt looking good for us
Can't see many weaknesses in that Sydney line up, game plan or work ethic.
Maybe we can upset them but....
Everything seems to point towards Sydney taking it out, a pretty easy run Friday night against the Roo's while Hawthorn had to fight it out till the siren on Saturday in a much tougher encounter. The extra day break and Sydneys form seem to have most pundits thinking Sydney but and its a big but they are playing Hawthorn who throughout 2014 have endured quiet alot of adversity with injuries to key players all missing games collectively, a crook coach etc to still end up there the last weekend in September, as i said in another thread there is a bit to admire about that. There is some real strength of belief in the Hawks that no matter what comes their way they will overcome it.
2014's best two performed sides will go head to head in the GF, who has been better in 2014 means little, who will reign supreme on the day means everything. The best team doesn't always win the day, in 97 and 98 the Crows were not the best team in those years but managed to reign supreme on the last day in September, every chance the Hawks will also. It shapes up to be a great GF, if it's as good as yesterdays game then footy will be the real winner.
Anyone else think Pup struggled last night and could be in the firing line for Cyril?
Was in the car for the last quarter so didn't get to gauge Simpkins influence.

Sorry Hawk guys but the Swans just look to strong
So the storyline for this year's grand final is more like 08 than 12 for us. Huge underdogs and I think I prefer it this way.
Sydney are the best team in the comp, but we can definitely give them a run for their money.
McEvoy out of VFL GF with Sewell some changes coming for next week

Poppy didn't have the best one. Simpkin wasn't bad but didn't really stand out either.
Not sure where this leaves Cyril. Don't think we can trust him for a full game. :-\

I agree, I also see a similarity to though in that we stumbled across the line in the prelim without playing our best footy. Hopefully the result is the same as 2008 rather than 2012 though.

I don't know why people seem to think this is a one horse race. I think it's just about a 50/50.
What happened in prelims counts for nothing on GF day.
People comparing it to the upset of 08? :o I think people forget how big of an upset that actually was. Hawthorn were given no hope in that game.
Upsets are a regular on GF day anyway.
Let's not forget in recent history..
2008 - Geelong favourites, Hawthorn win
2009- St.kilda favourites, Geelong win
2011- Collingwood favourites, Geelong win
2012- Hawthorn favourites, Sydney win
It doesn't count for much. It's 2 hours of footy and while I agree Sydney deserve slight favouritism, there's not much in it at all and it wouldn't be a huge upset if Hawthorn won.
P.s to anyone that is a member for either of these teams and isn't going, I don't know how you do it! I couldn't bare to watch it on TV.
I struggle to watch Home and Away games on the TV let alone finals or heaven forbid the day Richmond are in a GF
calling it a one horse race is a bit much most people just think Swans are a better team
Let's not forget that Hawthorn beat Sydney just 7 weeks ago minus Hale, Lake and Jesus.
Sydney will rightfully be firm favourites but it's not some kind of foregone conclusion.
Quote from: kilbluff1985 on September 22, 2014, 01:25:57 AM

Not just talking about on here, just general discussion around seems to be that it's Sydney's game to lose.
I don't see it that way at all. I think it's maybe 55/45 Sydneys favour.
People are quick to forget that Hawthorn were missing so many gun players for a lot of the year, even their coach and they still finished 2nd in convicting fashion.
I think a lot of these predictions are being based off the prelim finals but like I said, they will count for nothing. GF day is a clean slate.
At least it makes it easier for me to pick a team to barrack for. I couldn't decide but I always love an underdog so go the Hawks!

Great work mate!
GF is Hodgeys 250th?
My main concern is the net difference between 2012 and 2104 is 2 Buddies.
2012 Hawthorn + 1 Buddy vs Swans + no Buddy
Is now Hawthorn + no Buddy vs Swans + 1 Buddy.
A net loss of 2 Buddies!! :( >:(

Went to the 08' Grand Final spurring on the Hawks and that was simply amazing.. Got to play on the ground and everything as part of the Auskick scheme (I was 12) and saw the massive upset (plus all the massive moments including Dew's third quarter, Cyril's effort 2v1) with Geelong losing.
Well done to those of you who have tickets, it is an amazing experience! The atmosphere is simply like no other, and even that makes the whole day unreal. I'll be cheering on a close contest and I won't care whoever wins, both been the best two teams all year. Good luck fellas.
Do it for Hodgey!!
I tell you what, leave Kennedy and Buddy behind when you head back to Sydney and I'll let you have the flag.
And McGlynn for that matter.
LOL - you pretty much kicked JPK and Mcglynn out the door. Then told anyone who would listen that you never needed Buddy anyway...

JPK was offered a 1 year deal on very avg money. Traded for pick 39 (Round 3)
McGlynn told he was 99% not going to get a game. Traded for 46 (Round 3) and 70 (Round 5)
Not exactly trying to keep them or asking much for them!!
Yeah Hawthorn didn't really care whether they stayed at all lol
Ins: Rioli, McEvoy
Outs: Simpkin, Ceglar
Rough for Cegs, probably the right decision though.
So Sewell didn't make it and Lewis got up? You'd think that would pretty much mean Sewell's done?

Not sure how I feel about BB coming in for Cegs. BB would want to have a big game or else serious questions will be asked.
Always thought Simpkin was going to be the unlucky one for Rioli. I fully expect him to start as our sub, which will certainly be exciting when he comes on :)

He has been great form in the VFL, hopefully he can bring some of that. Hopefully we don't get an early injury, or we could be exposed with Cyril, would be a calculated risk to pick him.
Yeh you big hippy Ceglar, we'll have you over here mate! Wont even drop you in the 2015 Grand Final! Poor unlucky frog
Edit: However, we will take Clarko, thanks! Am sure his last game at Hawthorn will be forgetful :)
Clearly the bigger body ruckman in to the team and the magic man Cyril
no surprises there
It's been a very weird year for Big Boy I would have thought
Was the first guy picked for St Kilda, then out of nowhere gets drafted to the Premiers, only to find that he cant hold a spot and has to plug away in the VFL, then finally gets into the team with one game left, the big one
Feel for Ceg's too, but also think McEvoy should have been starting for ages and not be in the VFL to begin with
As uncertain as the changes for the game may seem, how good does it make the team look though?
Literally has to be the strongest team we have fielded all year, and what a time to do it!
Passing time by comparing teams.

Probably not unless somebody goes down in the warm up.
There was a small rumour on Twitter of Hale being a late out. Can't see that happening though.
There was a rumour Hale was struggling yesterday, nothing about with what though.
He has been struggling for a while with a receding hairline. Could be that.
Don't know if Cyril is a good move or not he must be very underdone big ask in the biggest game of the year especially if he starts on the ground
will Cyril play the whole game, or will he get subbed off? Not the sort of player you'd normally sub off.
Can't see that happening unless he's struggling.
Well done Hawks
Well done Hawks, too good today.
I'll give more thoughts later but two things -
1. I honestly didn't give us a hope. That was the best performance this team has had under Clarkson and it came in a GF.
2. With 2008 and 2013 people could always make the argument that Geelong and Fremantle kicked themselves out of it and they lost rather than Hawthorn winning. Not today, it was all us and it was flowering glorious.
Yeah well done guys, well deserved.
One of the best performances I've seen in recent times!
Great work by Hawthorn, picked the right time to have a good game.
Well done Hawks, awesome effort.
I can't wait to hold that cup. It's just the best feeling.

Game plan change handball instead of kicking in the back line
7 fowards 1st half Swans did knot know what to do with the pressure

That's all.
Seriously though -
+144 disposals
+38 marks
+6 tackles
+13 scoring shots
+20 inside 50's
+10 contested possessions
+137 uncontested possessions
+5 goal assists
+14 one percenters
+4 stoppages
+2 clearances
+8 marks inside 50
+9.2% effective disposals
+7.6% goal accuracy
+17 bounces
-4 clangers
That uncontested possessions stat is the one that really stands out to me, Swans shouldn't have let you dominate on the outside like that and that is how you killed them. But your Hawks were just clearly better all day!
+137 uncontested possessions
crazy in a GF

Graham Wright has been huge for us and that's why Carlton threw everything at trying to steal him. But let's not forget the coaching staff too. Aside from Clarko there's Luke Beveridge, Brendon Bolton, Cameron Bruce, Brett Ratten, Monkey and our development coaches. They have all done an amazing job with the list.
Honestly did not see that coming. Well done Hawks, truly amazing.
The Rioli selection was genius.

The Rioli selection was genius.
Really? I thought he was easily the least effective Hawk. Only player to be well beaten by his opponent

I don't know what game you were waching, but that's not what I saw. He was awesome in the first quarter, and good in the 2nd and 3rd before he got subbed off. The stats sheet doesn't say much, but he played well.
I still had him as the 22nd ranked Hawk on the ground, Simpkin or Sewell would've offered more, not that it mattered at all.
It's tough to be best on ground when your subbed off and there are like 5 players with more than 30 disposals ::)
Sewell should retire and I'm not sure Simpkin would have been as good.
I thought Cyril did a pretty good job on Tippett. :P
clever title 8)

Cyril was excellent. Especially viewing at the game plenty of pressure that wouldnt be seen by the cameras.
Also 22nd ranked hawk would still put him in the top 5 of swans.
Still not even sure how to react.
All I know is that I love those bloody Hawks!

Top 5 swans is a stretch lol, he was better than a fair chunk though.
All i was saying was that putting him in didn't really change anything, I'd hardly call it a genius move. Enjoy your win!
The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.

His first quarter was enormous in terms of pressure and setting the level for the rest of the game. In my eyes the other hawks followed his lead early on. Went quiet towards the end but the game was already won

fair enough I guess
I thought Cyril was pretty electric in the first as well
I loved the thrill of watching Cyril and listening for the 'ping' that thankfully never came. :P
Just watching the game again for the third time and Cyril had a major hand in 3 goals so he was definitely more influential than the stats might suggest.
WHAT A flowerING GAMEEEE!!!! BACK-TO-BACK BABY!!!!
So honoured to have been there to witness that! Best day of my life I would have to say!
Cyril was amazing pressure-wise particularly early, I think his selection was easily justified (this is coming from someone who before the game was not overly happy with Duryea being picked as the sub over him).
I was about to go through each player individually but let's face it- they were all guns!

Il be watching it a few times when i get home, see if i can pick myself out in the crowd almost marked buddys last goal.
The replay will be on high rotation and might even knock off last year's prelim victory over Geelong - which was wonderful too.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-10-25/lake-reveals-finals-injury
HAWTHORN defender Brian Lake has revealed he played in the preliminary final and Grand Final against medical advice, after being hospitalised with internal bleeding early in the finals series.
Lake suffered a corked hip against Collingwood in round 23 but felt it worsen late in the third term against Geelong in the qualifying final.
It felt even worse during the last quarter, and Lake told Triple M that he knew something was seriously wrong, lying awake early the following morning.
Tests revealed he had internal bleeding and he underwent surgery to halt it.
The man!
