Title: WXV Round 7: Top of the Table Clash
Post by: ossie85 on April 28, 2014, 06:33:58 AM

Round 7      AFL Round 7

Buenos Aires Armadillos   v   Mexico City Suns   Estadio de River   Americas Premiership Match
New York Revolution   v   Berlin Brewers   MetLife Stadium, New Jersey
Beijing Thunder   v   Moscow Spetsnaz   Beijing Olympic Park   EurAsian Premiership Match
PNL Reindeers   v   Sao Paulo Pumas   Stade de Gerland
Dublin Destroyers   v   Toronto Wolves   Crooke Park
New Delhi Tigers   v   London Royals   Wipro Stadium   EurAsian Premiership Match
Tokyo Samurai   v   Cape Town Cobras   Tokyo Olympic Stadium
Cairo Sands   v   Pacific Islanders   Borg El Arab Stadium   Africonia Premiership Match
Seoul Magpies   v   Wellington Warriors   Seoul World Cup Stadium

Buenos Aires v Mexico City shapes up as a huge clash, with the Armadillos taking on their 5th 2013 top 8 team in 7 rounds - and yet still remaining undefeated. Mexico City have looked to be on a mission after last year's Grand Final loss. It may come down to Home Ground Advantage! Who do you guys tip?

Berlin head to New York desperate to break a 4 match losing streak (despite playing pretty solidly at times). They face a New York who are hugely up and down, so this is most definitely a danger game for the Brewers. Can New York stay in the 8? Can Berlin kick start its season?

Moscow would be happy with its form last week taking out the Peace Cup, but that happiness will be short lived if they head to Beijing and lose. The Thunder have definitely improved this year, but have been down the last couple of weeks and have slumped to 16th on the ladder.

Sao Paulo's have won the last 4 matches to zoom up to 3rd on the ladder, while PNL look a genuine team with a very strong season so far. The Pumas have to be wary of the Reindeers at home, as they still have positional players. A Top 4 spot on the line here.

Dublin have let 2 matches slip this year (Tokyo, London) that they were favourites to win. Now they face a revitalised Toronto in Ireland - this could be one of the matches of the week, as Toronto look for win number 3 in a row.

New Delhi have been plucky, managing 3 wins this year! Can they get win #4 against London? The Royals would be chuffed winning the British Isles Cup for the 3rd time last week, and a win here and they are in contention again.

Tokyo v Cape Town. Who can call this one? Both teams have been up and down like a yo-yo. Tokyo should win on form, but I don't know! This game is more important for Cape Town, who would struggle to come back from 2-5.

Cairo's first 3 week average was 158, next 3 week average 126.3 - looks like the Mumford argument holds sway. A loss to Pacific would be disastrous, as Cairo need to keep the top 8 in touch. Pacific have managed 3 wins this year, which is impressive. Will they win a 4th?

Two of the younger sides in the competition face each other, with Wellington heading to Seoul. Wellington coming off a victory, while Seoul need a win.

I really like our chances. HGA and Jones coming back from his massive game in the reserves (resting) will help up big time.

Apparently (according to another XVs coach who has him) Barlow is a chance to come back this week.

It's going to be tough to decide on a team this week. In a MUST win match do we risk selecting a potential orange vest candidate who if he does get subbed will likely get subbed in the 3rd or 4th quarter therefore nullifying the sub rule?

Do we rest Barlow and conserve him for next week?

Who do we select? Cross or Kelly? Both who are averaging very similar. With SD Thompson back who do we select as 4th defender?

The more consistent 70ish scoring players in the form of Astbury/Newman or the 90s one week 50s the next Easton Wood?

Or do we Attack! With Hale and Petrie being F4/F5 and both knocking out 90+ last week should we back them in and risk lesser forward coverage?

This big match up is huge. It'll be a huge contributor to our chances to finish top 2 and their chances as well.

Dillos are realistic about their chances and realise they still have big challenges ahead that we could easily lose to, including but not limited to the Pumas and Dublin.

However if we want number 1 and to put ourselves in the best position possible to be able to absorb losses against other great teams we must win this one. Otherwise Mexico with a one game lead after this week might be unstoppable.

Time to think.

Just a word of warning, if you see a screaming naked man running down the street, then, well, Fyfe has stayed in WA.

Emg: T. Goldsack, J. Billings, M. Williams

IN: J. Trengove,, M. Thomas
OUT: L. McPharlin, J. Billings

In comes Jackson Trengove who was rested last week! Just making sure he's counted as getting that 10% bonus :). Will also activate the sub-rule!

This means McPharlin and Billings have been dropped for the big game against Pumas! Although put in solid efforts last week, was not enough to hold their spots. Trengove and Tank are both coming into the side hoping to provide spark off the bench. Thomas hopefully is able to hold his spot, otherwise Goldsack is ready to go!

Marseilles have been boosted this week with the return of Marley Williams! After dealing with some off-field issues, he's finally ready to return to the field and fight for his spot in the team. The reserves for PNL have been outstanding this year, despite the poor record.

Fyfe's flu has got me worried, so no captaincy for my little superstar this week. Nor am I confident my other superstar is quite ready to consistently pump out worthy captain scores, so have given Steven a break also.

That leaves Hibberd and my main man Dan to shoulder the captaincy.

Yes Garlett scored 102 last week, but I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever he will back that up, so in comes Hunter.

Need this win pretty bad.

PS: Only 19 to pick from this week  :'(

Nope, a result of myself and my wonderful assistants (Nrich102 and Vinny) putting in more effort than the average week.

Cox scored 76 and 68 against Freo in 2012 and 70 and 96 last year. Warnock should beat up on young Pies rucks.

In 2012 and 2013 he was also a better player than this year.

Therefore in champs league I am also resting Cox.

OUT: L.Greenwood, J.White, T.Hickey

Sub rule is in play

Finally some, albeit minor, selection dilemmas this week which is a good sign of players returning etc. Hickey's injury hurts with the 2 ruckman option working well for us with him in good form.

White stiff to be dropped, was a hard call to make between him and Henderson, who would have thought I'd be saying that, unfortunately purely the reputation of Henderson won out, my gut tells me White will play well tonight but I can't drop the man I traded Zorko for!

Young in some doubt for tonight apparently, not entirely sure whether to give that last interchange spot to White or Greenwood just yet with both capable of big scores.

McLean returns, which is handy. Vice captain Swallow to play a full game in the VFL this week, getting closer and closer to returning to his WXV duties.

Just the two changes this week, which has given us a team without OOP players for the first time in a while! Stephen Hill is a forced out due to injury, whilst David Zaharakis has been omitted after an indifferent start to the year. In to the side comes Simon White who after getting dropped was told would never play for the side again, but has put in 2 solid efforts in the reserves the last 2 weeks and has gotten himself back in the coaches good books. A poor performance this week may spell the end to his Puma career though. Also in to the squad comes grand final hero Matthew Buntine who will add to the solitary Puma cap currently under his belt.

Going to be a tough match against the Reindeers this week, surely won't be as easy as last years 173-137 victory!

Sam Dwyer with a nice 103 in three quarters before being subbed as a precaution due to knee soreness.

Getting scaled up a little wouldn't be too much too ask?

Beams as captain isn't doing too badly.

Good news is you get Thomas and Everitt (didn't last time because of the partial lockout)

Bad news your team will be based on preferences, and Cape Town become the first team to lose a premiership point.

@pyronerd
I'm also really not sure if New York know that Lycett isn't a forward. But, they don't have any others anyway.

@pothead

Adam Schneider is a rookie, and you have other forwards that can play. So Byrnes comes in instead, with Patfull the third emergency.

Looks like PNL are scrambling against the Pumas who have got some big game performers! Signs are not looking good for PNL...
Ablett due to fail
That'd help alot, although Polec, Jacobs and Roughy firing and Jones going eh for us, will need a few big performances to get us back in there!

So much disappoint in our Port duo in Wingard/Westy recently. THEY MUST CARRY US >:( >:(. Nah, I still love them <3.

Reindeer
Simpson 109, Enright, Jaensch 38, Harbrow
Priddis, N. Jones (CC) 122, Ball 78, Ray 105
Lobbe 91
Westhoff 40, Rioli (CC) 176, Wingard 81, Billings 50
Trengove (R) 86, Thomas

HGA - TBA
Total - 976/11

vs

Pumas
Houli, Walker 109, Buntine 56, White 72
Ablett (C), Sloane 104, Zaharakis, Polec 141
Jacobs 132
Roughead 137, Gunston 99, Wright 49, Smith 101
Minson, Masten

Total - 1000/10

Looks like it will be tough for the Reindeer from here. Polec was amazing today! As was Roughy and Jacobs. PNL had some disappointing scores, which has put them in a bad state at the moment and will be needing some poor scores from the remaining Pumas, particularly captain Ablett if they are to stay in the match...

Eski looking at a nice score.

Tory Dickson didn't have the greatest night, but hopefully his score is the lowest and becomes HGA.

Rhycey Shaw! In some ripper form lately. Same goes for Pedo, 82 at 3 qtr time and ending with 86 isn't desirable but I'd take an 86 from him anyday.

*Probably not worth doing my progressive score until after the North game every week given half my side plays for them :P

Nah only the 4 North boys this week, potential for 6/7 to play when Swallow returns, and Greenwood could be called on.

Great week for the Dillos so far, not just on the field but in the reserves :)

Simon Tunbridge is to make his AFL debut. Paul Stewart late inclusion for our reserves scoring 107.

Pretty excited. If our reserves can make it into the 8 it will be awesome.

Last season Dillos had games where they could only get around 12 players in the seniors, therefore we used the trade period to acquire some depth. It is paying off in spades with our reserves pushing for the 8!

Buenos Aires Armadillos 11/1105 (Johnson CC, Barlow, Harvey, Thompson)
Mexico City Suns 12/1062 (Bartel CC, Pavlich, Sandilands)
Verdict: Buenos Aires look to be cruising to win, and premiership favouritism.

Berlin Brewers 10/818 (Fyfe, Kennedy, Jackson CC, Conca, Duffield)

Sao Paulo Pumas 12/1181 (Ablett C, Masten, Houli)
Verdict: Sao Paulo will be comfortable victors here! As PNL slip back to the pack

Dublin Destroyers 8/753 (Selwood C, Dal Santo, Mundy, Goldstein, Rance, Dixon, Hansen)
Toronto Wolves 9/807 (Ziebell, Adams, Riewoldt, Johnson, Cunnington, Grima)

Bit peeved off at Harvey and Thompson only getting 130 between them. flowering useless for us ::) they're meant to be 200 points combined each week. We could've scored a nice big 170 if they were on song.

Harvey + SD. Thompson should be a 200 point lock, not a 130 point lock ::)

Week ruined by 3 poor scores today, but I can't really blame  Barlow. He was solid.

I'm pretty excited to see the reserves score though. Petrie, Kelly, Cox, Astbury, Newman, Tunbridge, P. Stewart...

Armadillos Flag Favourites

Buenos Aires put on another convincing display, with stars across the board and solid home ground performance. The Armadillos are officially the flag favourites, with Mexico City suffering its first loss since last year's Grand Final.

Also! A draw in the reserves!

Buenos Aires Armadillos (24.15.159) defeated Mexico City Suns (21.17.143)

Best
Buenos Aires: S Johnson, S Burgoyne, M Boyd, J Schulz, K Cornes, P Chapman
Mexico City: J Bartel, B Goddard, A Sandilands, J Lewis, L Hodge, S Thompson

Nails we were also tracking for a much bigger score, but Houli and Masten were very poor today.

Yep 5 in a row, the Pumas are purring...

But we play Dublin next round, so could come to an end.

Berlin storm home to snap losing streak

Berlin looked on the ropes, but a strong performance late in the game and they came away strong victors!

Amazingly, the sub rule worked against Berlin TWICE this week (in the same AFL game also, both St. Kilda players!).

New York have some questions to ask, with some young talent in the reserves surely look likely for a game including Harley Bennell and Shaun Atley.

New York Revolution (20.8.128) lost to Berlin Brewers (21.13.139)

Best
New York: J Gibson, T Liberatore, M Stokes
Berlin: M Jamar, R Conca, P Duffield, L Jetta, N Fyfe, D Jackson

Substitute
Berlin: J Garlett subbed in for J Saunders, A Georgiou subbed in for J Geary

WXV Debut
Berlin: A Georgiou

Reserves
Washington Rebellion (12.13.85) defeated Rhineland Rum-Runners (4.5.29)

Best
Washington: W Hoskin-Elliott, H Bennell, S Atley, A Young
Rhineland: Nil

Moscow win with all round performance

Callan Ward was the only player to star for Moscow, others were solid across the game.

Beijing had four in the best, but had too many passengers.

Best
Beijing: L Neale, M Rosa, H Taylor, C Hooker
Moscow: C Ward

Late Changes

Destroyers tame Wolves

Is this the Dublin that we were promised? Toronto have got to be disappointed, but it is hard to compete with 160.

Who needs a coach when you have a team this good.

So proud of the boys :')

Also, I know I should've raised this earlier but don't I lose a point after 2 infringements? I know last time was a true flower up and probably considered an infringement, but I remember Oss saying:

Both you didn't name a team. I should just name a team for you, and have the Lions/Tigers players locked. But think will give this choice:

- Name a team by Saturday, but you can't name any Tigers/Lions players
now I know shower got confusing, I flowered up etc, but I did sort of follow this one.

Actually I'm probably in the wrong but just checking. Sorry again guys for not being as dedicated of a coach this year as I have been in the past. I promise I'll make an effort to improve! I've just taken some serious time to adjust to Uni/college life; well that's my excuse anyway  :-[

Yeah unfortunately you didn't chumpy. You did name a team, but in it you named Cotchin as VC, which you weren't allowed to do since he had already played. So it ended up being ossie naming you a team and giving Cotchin the captaincy.  :-\

Basti has been in pretty gross form but was too good a player to keep sucking. We thought this was the game where he had the greatest chance to turn it around. Moral of the story, never bet against the champ (Joey) even when he's playing the ball-hogging reining premiers at the MCG when rain is forecast :'(

Geez poor form lads, if we really were tanking I would have accepted unders for Joey and written-off this season.

As it stands though, we're only percentage out of the 8 AND percentage away from your mob Nige. So if you're putting in 100% and we're tanking like you claim, that makes your team look a little average, no? ;)

I knew that our side with all our injuries and outs wouldn't be able to match the Royals so I decided to go extreme with captain selections in the hope something big could happen.

Haters gon' hate.

We wanted a crazy captain score so we took half the captaincy off a guy who had scored 140 and 174 in the last 2 weeks and gave it to a guy with a season average of 77.2

At first I thought the tanking call was a joke... Looking at it now however...

QuoteI knew that our side with all our injuries and outs wouldn't be able to match the Royals so I decided to go extreme with captain selections in the hope something big could happen.

We wanted a crazy captain score so we took half the captaincy off a guy who had scored 140 and 174 in the last 2 weeks and gave it to a guy with a season average of 77.2

At first I thought the tanking call was a joke... Looking at it now however...

the tanking call was a joke, whatever the coaching panel is doing its working. I doubt many would have predicted NDT to be 3-4 by round 7.

Obviously it was the wrong decision but honestly did not see Montags scoring so well against the Hawks... even still surprised after a 145pt loss

Yes, it's Tags, got to back him in every week, especially if your 2nd best option is a player who is averaging 77 for the season :-X

But I know LE wouldn't tank, wish he traded me Tags though. Have Tags in EXVs and AXVs :( LE wouldn't give him to me here.

Haha mate, I looked into this and although it clearly didn't come off I felt it was a necessary risk to take in order to have a chance at the win.

Over the Hawks past four matches, they have conceded on average just 2 tons a game against quality opposition in Fremantle, Hawthron, GC and the Tigers. Even then, these facts are skewed by the Cats game where the Hawks lost and the Cats played got the lions share of the points. Without this game, its much closer to one ton per game conceded in the Hawk-victories which you'd assume would be repeated against the Saints (and it was).

Furthermore, the #1 midfielder of opposing sides were kept (over the past 4 weeks) to an average of less than 100 a game.

Based on these, added to the fact that heavy rain was forecast for the game at the MCG, I decided to take the punt on Bastinac having a field-day against the Gold Coast, something which obviously backfired bigtime.

If it came off I'd look like a tactical genius.

But it backfired biiiiiiiig time so I'm copping the flak for it and I regret making the call. Don't worry, Rico isn't letting me forget the call probably cost us the win :P With all our outs I felt forced to take the risk!

Ahh well, we'll be back.

MUUUUUMBAAAAAIII!
