EPL is back with a bang!! Huge night last night with some late goals to give Tottenham and Arsenal victories over lesser opponents, and some thrilling draws amongst Leicester v Everton and Sunderland v West Brom
And of course my boys SWANSEA taking down Manchester United, at Old Trafford if you don't mind 8)
What are your thoughts for the upcoming season? Who will stay up? Who will go down?
Post any thoughts or discussion you have about all things EPL in this thread. It's gonna be another great season and has already started out superbly!
Feel free to do your own in a similar format as well!

It's almost impossible to predict as there are about 10-12 teams that could plausibly go down, but...
18. Leicester
19. Aston Villa
20. Burnley
Predicted Surprise Packet of 2014/15
Might not be a surprise for some but Arsenal could mount a serious tilt at the title if they can keep their stars free from injury. QPR could also surprise a few people as well given their transfer window - they've got Remy back too don't forget.
Predicted Slider of 2014/15
Crystal Palace may really struggle without Tony Pulis. Given they've only signed Brede Hangeland, Frazier Campbell and Martin Kelly over the summer, a reason why Pulis wanted out, I reckon they could get a bit closer to relegation this season. They were gone for all money until he took over from Ian Holloway, and they'll have to bring in either some quality signings or a quality manager or it could potentially be a nervy season.
First Sacking of 2014/15
Paul Lambert of Aston Villa. Did manage to get 3 points last night though... Sam Allardyce of West Ham may not be far behind either.
Thoughts on Your Team for 2014/15
Mine is Swansea. Boy wasn't last night a good start!!
At first I was a bit surprised Monk got the job full-time but I've really warmed to him and seems a good fit. Swansea have lost some key players from last season, but our replacements probably make our squad better as a whole. Michu, Vorm, Chico and Pablo Hernandez were all either disinterested, unreliable and/or in decline. Ben Davies is our biggest loss but everywhere we've lost players, we've replaced with arguably better ones. Gomis is a beastly striker, Sigurdsson is a jet and more reliable than Michu, Fabianski is a quality keeper, Montero is electrifying down the flanks, and hopefully we can get Federico Fernandez, the CB from Napoli. Also, De Guzman's loan has expired but so has Ki Sung-Yeung's, so we get him back. And we have to keep Wilfried Bony - that is crucial. So I'm optimistic for this season, hoping we can finish 10-13th if not higher. Exciting season ahead, come on you Swans!
(written prior to last night)
Think it will be Man City who take out the league this year.
We (Liverpool) play Southhampton tonight. Should get the win considering we bought most of their team :P
So pretty much after starting to follow EPL last season, I spent the whole year just watching games and not really supporting a team but just going for my fantasy players, haha. With convincing from mates, I have decided to go with Liverpool. Didn't want to support a City, Chelsea or United.
Plus I play as them on FM14 and Steven Gerrard is a beast in a real life. :P
So glad it's back.

Liverpool. Think our attack is lethal. Sturridge and Sterling are beasts. I think Lallana will have a good year when he is fit. Coutinho for the time being will be good aswell. I'm hoping they win the league but I think a top 4 is a v good chance.

Man U not really a slide but will not improve from last year. Stoke will be in a relegation battle
First Sacking of 2014/15
Who ever is in charge of Stoke. I would love it to LVG, I regard Man U as the collingwood of the EPL
Thoughts on Your Team for 2014/15
Crystal palace
Losing the man who saved us last year is not a good start before the season even started, expecting to finish between 10th and 15th. Hopefully have a big signing and a manager by the end of the month and then be glad all over.
It took Fernando Torres 732 minutes of football to score his first goal for Chelsea...
...It took Diego Costa 17.

Still love ya Nando. :-*

Beautiful performance from the Blues. Started slow but really put the foot on the gas when we went behind. Then cruised again after Iva tapped in.
Very lethal, keep it up 8)

Fabregas looks like an amazing signing for Chelsea... And Andre Schurrle is gonna have a huge breakout year IMO

They do, but 4th has to get through the play-off round.
A squad I'm really liking this season is Newcastle... Are there any Toon Army members on here?
They've made some very good signings in the off-season and on the whole have a pretty decent squad. Emmanuel Riviere knows how to find the net, Remy Cabella can show moments of freakish brilliance, Daryl Janmaat is a very solid replacement for Debuchy, Siem de Jong is another good pick-up and Jack Colback could prove a very shrewd acquisition. Newcastle looked good against City on the weekend; losing 2-0 to the Champions is far from an embarrassment.
I tip them to finish 8th this season, the best of the rest after the "big 7". Could definitely push for higher though like a couple of years ago... I think they're a club that Swansea can aspire to be like in a few years time when we can really establish ourselves as a solid EPL club.
Chelsea, Coty and Liverpool to be top 3. No particular order.
Arsenal to finish 4th.
United to battle everton, Newcastle and Swansea for Europa

Can't see Swans finishing above 7th but would be fantastic if we did! IMO Europa League was more of a distraction last year, it may have given us some nice financial prize money but the Friday games in Russia and the edges of Europe harmed us for the EPL games. We lost more games than we should have, which is why we got dragged into the relegation battle.
On another note your avatars never cease to amaze me
This is kinda semi-EPL related... but did anyone see Demba Ba's shot on goal for Besiktas?

Ok - here is the geeky answer
CL qualification is decided by where you finish in your domestic league and most importantly which country you play in.
The first 3 teams in England will automatically qualify for the Champions League - the 4th place team has to qualify ina 2 leg knockout game
Clubs from weaker leagues have it even tougher. For example Celtic from Scotland won their league but still have to play 3 knockout games just to qualify. The reasoning behind this is a "co-ifficient" which is essentially a ranking of each domestic league in Europe. Each team then starts earning their own ranking points
So let's say Liverpool from England have a co-ifficient of 10 and Celtic of Scotland have co-ifficient of 5.
UEFA would give Liverpool 3 "points" for finishing 2nd in the EPL and would multiply those points by the co-ifficient i.e 30 points.
UEFA would give Celtic 4 "points" for winning the SPL and would multiply those points by the coifficient i.e 20 points.
Liverpool gain more points because they qualified from a harder league
To make matters worse for Celtic, if they qualfied for the CL proper...and win a match...they get points, again muitplied by the coifficient.
Two years ago, Man City finshed bottom of their CL group.....Celtic reached the QF. City actually gained more ranking points than Celtic.
Celtic pay the price for the awful standard of their domestic league...and the big clubs from the big leagues get richer and richer and the gap gets wider and wider. Football justice right there ::)
Thank you dd.
City vs Liverpool on Tuesday morning. So keen! Sturridge hattrick 3-0.
Goodbye
Some good games last night and some really dour ones. Couple of 0-0 draws which won't be replayed on "Classic EPL Matches" any time soon...
Can't help but fear for Crystal Palace after losing 3-1 at home to West Ham. Good goals from Zarate and Downing but not many expected West Ham to win so easily. Arsenal v Everton was a cracker - showed Everton might be being underestimated, and Arsenal still aren't a Top 2 prospect yet. Aaron Ramsey is going from strength to strength and has really hit the ground running this season with another goal last night
Glad my boys the Swans maintained a 100% winning record but still looked a bit below-par in the 1-0 win over Burnley. Sigurdsson provided the assist again - he's either scored or assisted all 3 of our goals so far.
Man City v Liverpool should be a belter
Uniteds easy start doesn't look so easy now.
A draw against burnley?
Losses to QPR, Everton, Chelsea and Leiscter and maybe to the Hammers?
Tipped the draw for United! But boy oh boy they just look devoid of any conviction or any confidence at all. They need a complete overhaul of midfield and defence... Di Maria is a great signing but a world-class CB and CM are needed NOW. Mehdi Benatia is an absolute necessity and I thought the deal was all but done, gone quiet now. Khedira is on the market, not sure why he hasn't been linked (much)... They should forget Vidal cos that deal looks dead in the water.
Forget 7th - they'll be lucky to make the Top 8 if they keep this up and don't make CB/CM signings.

if transfers were that easy to get over the line they would do it. United have to give consideration to the fact that TOP draw talent is not easily available, and agents in their wisdom will make a song and dance about Utd not have CL football to offer..and make ridiculous wage demands. The worst thing United can do right now is lurch from one mistake to another. I am not a United fan at all, but the team isn't half as bad as everyone thinks.

I don't support MU either but as a football fan in general I don't wanna see them languishing like this for too long. A new CB is probably more important than a new CM right now but both are necessities. Not sure about LVG's 3-5-2 yet but a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 could work wonders for them.
With a 4-2-3-1, RVP could play striker with Rooney as the winger, but roam the final third a la CR7, with the LB (Rojo or Shaw) bombarding forward. Mata in the No. 10 role behind the striker and Di Maria (if the signing goes through) on the other wing.
De Gea
Rafael - Evans/Jones/New CB - Rojo - Shaw
Herrera - Carrick/Fletcher/New CM
Di Maria - Mata - Rooney
RVP
Now that's not that bad a team on paper is it?
Thats a few $ on the park... :)
Well I'm a little disappointed about the game.
Played well in the first half but got outplayed in the second half.
#1 Johnson is a f'n Muppet. Useless. Defensive liability.

Very true. Johnson is a hack. I agree Moreno looked awesome. Just slow to clear that ball which lead to Jovetic goal. But other than that, nothing too bad. Can't wait for Balo to play. Will he play vs Spurs?

Chelsea are looking almost unstoppable with the Costa-Fabregas Dream Team
Arsenal looking like fourth place battlers again
Manchester United's attack is a dream garage of Rolls Royces and Ferraris, but their defence still looks like a Honda
Southampton doing surprisingly well given their summer exodus
Mario Balotelli and Danny Welbeck showing that a change of scenery hasn't meant a change of form (just yet)... the gap between their best and worst hasn't changed
Liverpool floundering and Newcastle still without a win, both disappointments so far.

Absolutely frenetic finish. Liverpool did not deserve three points at all. QPR were probably the better side, and to come from behind twice to level, then lose... they were terribly unlucky to get nothing at all
We should've lost by 3 goals :-[
Balo should've scored a couple tho. He looks really out of sorts.
WTF united. Lost me bet. Thought you knobs went back to your winning ways >:(
Balotelli's had more haircuts in his time at Liverpool than he has goals scored apparently.
so glad Swansea jagged the three points, good to see Bony starting to build form again too 8)
Anybody staying up for Manchester United v Chelsea tonight? Should be a cracker
The big question will Costa play this week?
All ive taken out of this thread, is that there are 5 delusional Arsenal fans out there 8)

AHahaha. Arsen from Arsenal. Gunning for the Gunners!
Ripper work by Borini on that one. Pushing for a starting spot in the upcoming PL game.
Yeha I hope we okay Borini and Balo up top. Any news whether Costa will play this week?
we've always worked well when we've had 2 fwds going at the same time.
i have no idea why we keep playing balotelli on his own up front??
when sturridge comes back balo will be a beast.
Sterling Ballotelli Sturridge
Coutinho Lallana
Henderson Gerrard
Manquillo Lovren Skrtel Moreno
Mignolet
;D

This is what I'm hoping for. Should take pressure off Lambert too if he's coming off the pine to play with whoever's in better form on the day.

If only we could start like that... the extra player would be super handy :P
IMO for next round:
Mignolet
Manquillo - Lovren - Skrtel - Moreno
Henderson - Gerrard
Sterling - Coutinho
Borini - Balotelli
Lallana off the bench (pretty stiff considering how well he's been playing tho - maybe a stat over Sterling).
Coutinho has to come into the team; he's been deadly off the bench for a few weeks.
Hahaha shower my bad. That looks good.
Coutinho is a gun, has to start imo. I really want both Lallana and Coutinho to start but it can't happen cause Balo is a shower cow up front by himself. :(

Haha, unfortunately the case at the moment!
Lallana could start out wide instead of Sterling. Not his preferred position but he can definitely play there. Sterling could do with a spell and would be super dangerous coming off the pine in the 60th minute.
Pretty exciting on paper though, especially when Sturridge gets back. Markovic looked alright last game too, although probs not worth a starting spot yet.

Southampton get another 3 points, is it out of the question to suggest they could compete for CL places?? With Liverpool, Everton and Spurs floundering, United and Arsenal yet to really reach top gear... a Europa spot is definitely possible.
Admittedly, their draw hasn't been too difficult yet, but they're looking pretty formidable and haven't dropped many points
The Manchester Derby is mad so far! City with two huge chances early.
Was good till Smalling got sent off. Now it's just going to be all City with United counter attacks.

Good early, tailed away a bit along with the rest of the team. Still was probably our best. Henderson was woeful.
Wonder who predicted Liverpool sucking this season

Good season but if Liverpool couldnt win this year I doubt they can come close next season. They ran like god with a tonne of less games.
Quote from: Andrew3747 on May 12, 2014, 03:52:31 PM
Make a bet they will get top 6? Will happily bet amywhere from 100 to 5k on evens for them to get top 6. Liverpool dont have the depth. United obv have work but with a decent manager top 6 is easy top 4 is achievable. While challenging seems like a long way ofd after this season its almost a given they will be closer to 2nd then 6th.
Liverpool ran way above ev this season but you also should feel embarrased that you let the title go aftee it was pretty much handed to you with 4 games to go.
Manchester United 3-0 Liverpool
73 mins gone. Rooney, Mata and RVP have all scored.
Liverpool could probably have 3 or 4 goals themselves but De Gea has been brilliant and Sterling has been selfish as usual
3-0!!
Mata's goal was clearly offside though
De Gea excellent for us again.

disgusting performance. i dont even know what to say.
from such ridiculous highs of last season to now.
absolutely gutted
What terrific defending from Allen and fantastic marking from Coutinho for the first!
What a decision by the ref for the second!
What a clearance from Lovren for the third!
Boy-oh-boy we can do no wrong
what a terrible clearance from Ashley Richards to hand Eriksen the winner!! in the 89th minute!! Boot it into the stands if you have to clear it from the byline!!!
Swansea's defence isn't PL standard IMO... Rangel, Richards, even Bartley are below the level required. A new RB is needed URGENTLY
Very very disappointed to lose 2-1 in such circumstances
fk yeah spurs!!!!

poised to pounce into top 4 with that win :)
City drew, all that needs to be mentioned!
Lallana...
my oh my Jonjo Shelvey isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, seriously
Gets told by Garry Monk pre-game that he needs to wise up and not be lazy... nek minnit concedes an own goal, lets Lallana waltz past him time after time, and commits a terrible foul that should've been a red (and has now been followed up by the FA)
Man United for the league! Lets just hope we can add some defensive reinforcements.
What a round :on
Sad to see StevieG most likely leave at. The end of the season. What a player
Gerrard to LA Galaxy at the end of the season. What a player, what a legend.
But Gerrard wasn't in Liverpool's best XI and his star was waning. Great player though, perfect time for both parties to move on IMO
On another note, I'd love to see some predictions for what will unfold in the latter half of the season
Who will go down? Who will win? Who will make Top 4? Here's mine
Predicted EPL Champion
Chelsea
(not by much)
Champions League Places
2nd - Manchester City
3rd - Manchester United
4th - Tottenham
Europa League Place
5th - Arsenal
Can't see Liverpool making Top 4, will probably finish 6th. Expect Southampton, Swansea, West Ham to challenge for Europa spots.
Relegation Places
18th - QPR
19th - Leicester
20th - Burnley
With Pardew going to Crystal Palace I think they'll stay up, but only just.

Apart from the dismal collapse against Leicester, I've been pretty happy with the performances recently. Was such an important period playing some weaker teams and anticipating Sturridge's return. It's certainly kept BR's job.

Was worried since a few of them were playing away they might not win, I only had Spurs
as a Swansea supporter, devastated that Bony has been sold to Man City, but really it was inevitable. Good luck to him.
Happy with Kyle Naughton at RB - our full backs (bar Taylor) have been very poor this season and we have no depth there.
Gomis could be on the way out as well - then we need to sign another Pelle/Bony-type. Spend a bit of extra coin (we're generally a stingy club) with the revenues we've now got.
Would love to see us get Mile Jedinak at the end of the season if Palace go down.

All Pardew's brilliance.
Toronto and Sunderland basically traded each other. Altidore for Defoe, interested to see that one play out.
Liverpool finally got rid of Assaidi and Arsenal have loaned Sanogo to Palace
Valdes now at Man Utd.
Swansea looking at Rhodes from Blackburn, I'm a big fan.
Schurrle apparently bound for Wolfsburg. We're also looking at bringing in Cuadrado and Pogba.
Salah probably going to be loaned, where to is the question.
I'm hearing Salah to Roma
Good to see Costa suspended, top of the line cow.
Also this has been a super boring transfer window. :P

Swansea interested in Southampton's Jack Cork
West Ham want Bafetimbi Gomis for 8 million pounds

Pretty happy with the way the lads are traveling atm. Nice 7 point lead at the top of the table. Still wary of Man City though, they'll keep us on our toes.
Super excited for Cuadrado's first home game at Stamford Bridge, dude's gonna kill it, I know it. 8)
Pretty good EPL season this now. We're entering the run home and pretty much every team has something to play for except for Swansea and Newcastle who are stuck in mid-table oblivion. :P
Swansea really struggling of late... making bad teams look good. Still in the top half though so I'm pretty happy with it. But we are becoming too reliant on certain players and are struggling since Bony left.
We need Sigurdsson back, and if Gomis could score a goal sooner or later that'd be great please...
