I was looking at this yesterday, I want to check these out... but I don't have money. :( :(
It would be good if I can read it.
Really angry with HS atm as I can only read 10 articles a week without subscribing which I will not do as why should we have to pay Use my quota getting SC scores for the pre season games.
Suspect it was something similar to what the courier mail did for Brisbane 2 weeks ago and rated the 10 best burgers for Brisbane.
There's a way of viewing it.
If you change the 'heraldsun' part of the URL to 'news' I'm pretty sure it become readable.
Something like that anyway...
google the article name click on first link :)
Both work as far as I know.
Thank you as it works will do that for DC scores as well for next games.
Later that day they then posted this article about people commenting on how so many good places missed out on their Top 10
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/battle-of-the-buns-readers-dish-up-buns-overlooked-in-our-list-of-melbournes-top-10-best-burgers/story-fnig4uyx-1226837184229
And I was actually quoted in the article ;D
"I would say the best burger I've had in Melbourne is at The Loading Dock in South Wharf" - Chris
That's me! 8)
Must be a News Corp thing, the Advertiser had a spread today on the top 10 burgers in Adelaide too.
Had Grill'd (for the third or fourth time) and Mr.Burger when I was in Melb for the tennis. Both were great.

Get chips from Burger Edge if you like the grilled ones. They don't have the herbs (I'm not really into smothering chips with flavour, I like the crunchy potato feel) and report back please :)

Best now probably Nordburger. Or if you wanna drive a little goto Port Wakefield and get the Nacho Burger.

Agreed. When I was in Adelaide I went to a burger place that had a really similar menu to Grill'd but did it a lot better. It was called FB's Fancy Burgers just off Rundle Street.
I got a top 5 for those in Melbourne
In no particular order
1. Andrews Burgers in South Melbourne
2. Terminus Pub in Clifton Hill
3. Brother Burger and The Marvellous Brew in Fitzroy. The Oh Brother with Bacon is the shower, if they get busy they can be sloppy, but if they aren't super busy the burgers are awesome. They also do an awesome bbq sauce which they make in house.
4. Badger vs Hawk in the city - they do an awesome chicken burger
5. Detour in Hawthorn - I have a soft spot for it, they used to also be known as BBNT (Burgers Burritos Nachos and Tacos) and closed down. They had a store in King Street. I used to go after the games at Etihad. I was generally a fat cow when I used to go there and get the No Disrespect (now known as the Hazard.)
I have heard the Merrywell do an awesome burger but haven't had a chance to check it out.

I've been to the Royale Brothers mentioned in the article and got a burger from there, it was very good but not sure it was the best I've had. I should check out that one in Moorabbin, looks like its about a 10 min walk from my place, never heard of it but once exams are done will go check it out one day.
I actually really like the burger at Sir Johns in Monash Clayton. When I'm out and we're feeling maccas me and mates go the pounder, which is literally 4 x the quarter pounder, so 4 patties. It feels so good if you're drunk enough, then you wake up the next morning and feel disgusting lol
Lol I usually get the double quarter pounder never tried the pounder
Would recommend the beef burger from St Ali in South Melbourne also a very decent coffee place top 5 in the city
WA people should know Alfreds Kitchen .
It's half the experience half the burger that makes it great.
Me and my mate plan to check out all of these burger joints in Melbourne that been listed by various people in the thread. 8)
A few people have said that they don't like Grill'd
I agree 100%. Overrated place with average burgers. Went there once, never again. Burger Edge was nice 5 years ago, but now their prices are just ridiculous for what they serve up
My friend and I have been talking about getting over to Andrews Burgers in South Melbourne. It always gets rated as the best in Melb and one of the best in Oz, so I need to get over and suss it out
Hard Rock Cafe on the Gold Coast is where I've had my best burger ever. It was so damn good, with a big onion ring in it
I honestly think the best burgers are the ones you make at home. I make an incredible burger :D

Do it. Just a couple of things before you go, the shop is tiny, like reallllllyyyyy tiny. There are some benches around and tables out front you can eat at. You generally have to wait due to the amount of burgers they pump out and how busy you get. I have had to wait 45 minutes before and they had 6 people working behind the counter. They aso have weird hours. They close a couple of hours in the afternoon (I think 3-5) and then close at 9. They are also closed on Sundays. If you are travelling from a while away on a Saturday night, call through to check they aren't sold out

Sounds like a cardiac arrest just waiting to happen :-X
No fast food place can even be considered when it comes to talking about the best burgers. Don't get me wrong, I'll smash fast food after a night on the beers or if it's late and there is nothing else open, but other than that there are a million more better options for take away over Macca's, KFC etc
After all the hype and talk, ended up having Grill'd the other day (Thursday) when I went out with my mate, then again on Sunday night for dinner with another mate. So I went from never having it to eating Grill'd twice in four days. :P
And yes, I really enjoyed it! 8)

I ended up going last Saturday. It is such a tiny store, the wait averages on 30 minutes because it is always so busy.
The chips are pretty good too. They are fish and chip shop style chips, stay hot for what seems forever and don't go soggy
I remembered another one I forgot last time. Ribs and Burgers, they have a Wagyu Burger which is pretty pricey but is pretty awesome. I get bacon added to mine and it just tops it off. They also have a surprise of the month at the moment which is a Chicken Parma burger which is also pretty good.
Chicken parma or chicken schnitzel burgers go flowering well.

Did you get the Wagyu with bacon though?
I'll get that next time I go to his house
The Chips with Aioli sauce are nice. I had the Cheese and Bacon Burger and he had the Best of Both Worlds sliders.
Yeah the regular burgers are alright but nothing to go wow over, the Wagyu on the other hand....
OK you've sold me :)
I'll get it next time I go to see my mate
Just checked their site, so this is the one I add bacon right?
WAGYU BURGER 18.50
Premium Wagyu beef mince, baby cos, tomato, Spanish onion, dill pickles, crispy onion rings, topped with pink and BBQ sauce
I'm not really a BBQ sauce fan at all, but I'll give it a go
Crispy onion rings sounds goooooooooooood!
That's the one, I don't remember it having BBQ sauce but they just changed the menu so that is a new addition to it. It might be worth getting it without the BBQ sauce but that is the one though. Because they char it on the grill it can be overcooked but if they make it right it is awesome. The Onion rings combined with the bacon and the juiciness of the meat with the slight char grilled taste goes down perfectly.
It is pretty local for me but I haven't had the burger the last couple times I have gone
I'll add cheese and bacon to it, and possibly remove the BBQ sauce/replace it with tomato sauce or mayo/aioli
I went to Fat Bob's the other day, which is number 1 on that list, and just assumed it was a normal burger place, but I got there (its like 5 mins from my house) and it's a restaurant, eat in only. Plus, only open for dinner Tues-Thurs, kitchen doesn't open till 6 on Friday and Sat.

Had the best burger of my life yesterday at Gloria's Swanston Kitchen in the CBD truly mind blowing flavour.
I have been meaning to go there
I think they are $8 on Tuesdays as opposed to $16.
I went today, good for $8 but certainly wouldn't pay $16. Haven't found a great burger in Melbourne yet.
Varsity Bar - Notorious P.I.G in Perth has beaten everything soo far.
Not a burger, but I had to fly to Sydney for a job interview at one of the airport meeting rooms last week, after it was all done I stopped at the cafe/bar that I usually go to (its just to the left once you walk through the detectors) and got a steak sandwich.
Seriously the best SS I have ever had, steak was perfectly cooked and tender, just the right amount of sauce and the chips, OMG!!
Two beers and could not have been happier!
But did you get the Job SR.

I have been but I am not a huge fan. They are alright but I wouldn't put them in the same league as Andrew's
8 Bit in Footscray is another place that does a pretty good American style burger.

So close to dinner as well :(
I finally did it!
I finally got over to Andrew's Burgers in South Melbourne
Not going to lie. I was a little disappointed
The burger was nice no doubt, but my friend and I both agreed that they were similar to the sort of burgers we get at a Fish N Chip shop, just with a few extra condiments
It was nice, but def think it's overrated, but I understand that. Small one off food places always go up in peoples opinions just because they are niche and not everywhere, and I think that's the story with Andrews too

I rarely go into the CBD so haven't really tried many burgers there but I spend a lot of time on the outskirts, South Melbourne, Southbank etc and I've always loved the burger at The Loading Dock, which is in South Wharf, but I went there a couple of weeks ago and discovered that they had changed the meat used. It's still good, but not as good
The Pavillion in Dandenong has a Secret Burger Menu and those burgers are very tasty
Best Burger I ever had is Hard Rock Café on Gold Coast - damn that was good!
don't know of any really good burger joints around Frankston :'(

They are Fish N Chip shop style burgers, but there are not a hell of a lot of Fish N Chip shops that make decent burgers these days.
Seriously, everyone get down to Fat Bob's in moorabbin, it's number 1 on this list for a reason. By far the best burger I've ever had, going there again soon.

I'm not sure I can eat at Beer Deluxe again. Had the most unbelievable heartburn from their burger. I know what you're thinking "Suck it up princess, it's only heartburn", nah this was off the charts. I was pacing around my hotel room thinking I was about to go into cardiac arrest. Herald sun seem to do a burger article every few months, but one they did a few days ago had this place as number one
Best burger joints I've tried in Perth in order are:
1. Varsity Bar - the range is great and they are all delicious. The Texan and the McFly are 2 favourites.
2. Johnny's Burger Joint - The Cure is the best burger I've ever eaten (200g bacon infused beef patty, 200g of crispy bacon rashers, 1 large onion ring, salad and a sauce that rivals Big Mac sauce)
3. Shortorder Burger Co. - Pop up store with decadent brioche buns
Since this thread started I've tried about 20 different places in the city, the best I've had so far is The Grand Trailer Park Taverna. Other top ones are Easeys, Lounge bar, 8-Bit and Kustom Burgers.

That place is always f'ing busy when I drive past. I have no interest in food trucks so I haven't bothered going. The Mexican place about a half block away is pretty good though.
Went to Burger Feul the other night and had a Barst**d with some kumara fries. So good.
It's a NZ gourmet burger restauarant chain but apparently have branched out into other countries including Australia...there's 3 in Sydney (Blacktown, Newton, Parramatta), 2 in Brisbane(Fortitude Valley, Victoria Point) and 1 in the GC(Mermaid Beach). Worth it.
So I finally went to Fat Bob's and ordered the Jackie O burger, looked attractive (along with the whole restaurant) and tasted fantastic, pretty sure I can pencil it in as my Best Burger.
Special mention goes to the re-arranged letters of a Red Rooster sign which spelt out, Red Rooters ;D
Ziggy's in Caulfield is flowering awesome. I highly recommend

Heard nothing but good things, but haven't been yet. None of my mates (who don't work 9 to 5) are keen to trek out to South Melb because none of us drive (or have a car in the case of those with Ps). I'm happy to go via PT, because I sussed out the way to get there, just gotta convince someone to come with and try it out.
Perth update:
Jus Burgers - went to an event they had about 2 months ago, paired 4 new sliders with 4 gage rds beers, very good! And our favourite slider has become a regular full size, milk battered fried chicken with slaw in a charcoal black bun. AMAZING! And I'e never rated Jus Burgers.
Chimek - What started as a korean fried chicken joint in the Freo markets has now opened in Northbridge and have added a selection of burgers to the menu. Haven't been to it yet, but have tried their original burger a while back which coincidently is the same as the above Jus Burger. One of their new burgers is called "The Shaq Burger"! :o
Johnny's - They have traded in all their regular buns for milk buns. Haven't had a chance to try these yet, but their "Cure" burger still ranks as my #1.
Roadhouse, Dempsey Hill Singapore. Wagyu beef with Monterey Jack cheese and Baconnaise. Burger was ok but the onion rings were the star.
Hello Sam is definitely worth a look if your in South Yarra.
pretty cheap for the area too.
Went to Laurie Dees in Epping last weekend
Pretty good burger
I've been going to Royal Stacks in Collins St for lunch since the burger place close to work closed. The Bacon Bacon goes down pretty good. Definitely worth checking out.
The other place was called Burger Boys, they've moved to Fitzroy now but I haven't had a chance to go since they've moved. The Royale with Cheese was my go to there.

This is in Chevron Island, Queensland about 5 minutes from Surfers Paradise. Would highly recommend it.

When do Carlton play Brisbane? Maybe we can do a burger bet. The main pain in the ass with Andrews is the hours they are open. They're random as fark. Not open Sundays, close at 9pm and they also close for a couple hours randomly in the middle of the day.

I don't like getting food out of a truck. I'd rather go to a store. Plus there are a bunch of other places in the area that do decent food so I would rather go there. There are also a few other things but I won't get into that.
Sounds very unusual but ok. You're really missing out then with trucks like Mr Burger and Dude Food Man - unbelievably good burgers
Last night I went to the other food truck place on High St but in Preston
So crap compared to Thornbury - and the burger was so poor. Won't be going there again!

Both of those places also have stores with more variety then the trucks. I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Burger, there ok, but I don't think they are anything special. There are 5-6 places off the top of my head I would rather go.
The one in Preston is a lot smaller when I drove past it, I try to avoid heading that far down High Street generally :P

Anyone for a burger tonight? Took the night off work
So what do people think about the burger project that just opened up?
im personally a big fan.
the chips and special sauce and the chocolate thick shake were surprisingly the stars for me. The burger was quality too, I had the double and it taste like a high quality whopper (which is a good thing).
The the spicy katsu was definitely interesting and was great till it got abit soggy towards the end.
Tried East Village here in Perth yesterday finally, a NYC diner. Menu was incredible, service was the best I've received in Perth. Burger was close to top in Perth too, I had their special which had 14hr slow cooked beef with bacon and other goodies. Chips were best I've had to in Perth. Quality venue, maybe slightly overpriced, but I'd head back again and again. My friend had the prawn and chorizo salad, in Perth we're used to getting shafted on product, this salad had at least 10 big king prawns and about 7 sliced of chorizo, I was impressed.

They can be hit and miss, but when they are on the EH Smashed Burger is awesome. I also got the hot rod chili burger a couple of times with the hero chili sauce. I eat a lot of spicy stuff and handle it like it's nothing, first time I got the hot rod it wasn't that hot, the 2nd time I couldn't feel my face.

That's the one near Elizabeth on La Trobe right? I went when they first opened. It was ok, I didn't think it was anything amazing and there are a couple places around the area that do better burgers.
Badger vs Hawk did the best chicken burger in that area but the kitchen hasn't been open in a long time. Royal Stacks on Collins do a really good burger. The Bacon Bacon is awesome.
I screwed up, Burger Theory is La Trobe St, burger project is Collins. I'm actually getting some dinner now before I head back into the office.
I drove to Essendon last week for the Dude Food place and the store was now for lease

Got The Boss burger and added bacon - absolute delicious
If you're in the area, I highly recommend
lately whenever i wanna have a burger its gotta be "Laurie D's" @ Epping Plaza/VIC
the burgers are old school style burgers and they taste absolutely amazing.

I'm not far from there, and maybe I need to give them a second chance because honestly, I think they're really overrated from my first experience there
I don't like driving to Epping so I haven't been yet even though it's not all that far.
Went to a place on the weekend called Coburgers in Coburg
The chips were average, but the burger was beautiful! Just the way I like them - super cheesy and heaps of bacon 8)
Had The Cure from Johnnys burger joint and was still good, but not as good as it used to be.
Best burger I've had in Perth in recent times has to be the Stevie Wonder from RoyAl's Burgers and Fried Chicken. Mmmm..mmm! 8)
Demazzi's in Essendon very good, went yesterday
Chips really nice as well

I've been to Coburgers ages ago. The burgers were cooked really well. I got full pretty quick but there are a couple a rate ahead within a 15 minute drive from there.
Huxtaburger on Flinders Lane.
Made myself a burger over the weekend at home.
Brioche bun, roast chicken, tomato and aioli. I was pretty happy with it and went down well.

Going to Melbourne for the weekend leaving Thursday, getting back Monday.
Where is the best/must go place for a burger?
I'd ask where the best place for a snitty is but I reckon Adelaide is the home of snitty in Australia ;) :P

It depends where you will be around Melbourne.
Best place is Easey's in Easey St. Collingwood. It is at the bottom of a 3 storey building and has booths like an American diner on the ground floor.
However the jewel in the crown is they have 2 Melbourne train carriages that have been placed on top of the building and you can eat in them while looking out over Melbournes skyline.
Great beer too and reasonably priced.
Book ahead for a carriage spot or just rock up and try your luck.

Not gourmet burgers but Carl's Jnr Californian Classic for $5 (light, fresh, tasty) and Burger Fuel's Bast*rd burger (big, juicy, filling)for around $12 are awesome.

Have tried their dogs, not their burgers. Surprising as Perth has some epic burger joints. Might have to try it out one day. My order in Perth, and it's damn close and none are bad.
Meet and Bun > RoyAl's > Smokehouse 3230 > Varsity Bar > Johnny's > Shortorder

What did you get? I get the fried chicken one, that is damn good. That list above, the difference from the first one to the last one is absolutely minimal, they all do it well, but if you're a burger connoisseur then you have your favourites. Wish I could try them all one after the other to really test them, I think I would die trying...maybe happy though, haha.
I attended Perth BBQ School over the weekend as I have recently gotten into smoking food on a weber. This was a 6hr course where they teach you all sorts of grilling methods whilst you eat the delicious morsels of goodness, whilst getting through a keg of beer. Highly recommend it if you're in Perth, well worth the money.
Made reverse seared burgers last night and can honestly say they are incredibly simple and I'm not sure if any of the burger joints I've loved compares to how good these burgers tasted! Meat used was coarsely ground chuck and brisket cuts. The biggest thing I learnt is don't add any herbs or spices, egg, onions etc. Straight meat until you're about to grill, then use a rub on both sides. Can be reverse seared or straight on the grill. Sauce was epic, whole egg mayo with American mustard and BBQ sauce. Topped with salad onions, gherkins and American chedder (melted on during the final sear). Buns toasted on the grill plate. Literally the best cheeseburger I've eaten hands down.
Will be in Melbourne for grand final week and will prob get a chance to check out 1 or 2 burger joints, which are the top 3 I should be looking at Vicco's? Have seen there is one in Collingwood housed in a rooftop train carriage which would be cool! Easey I think it's called?
Was in Sydney for my B-Day and tried the American burger from Burger Project. I'll go right ahead and say it - this was the best burger I've ever eaten. Perfectly cooked and every element was top notch. A few days later I had the same burger at a different location and once again...perfect.
Now, if they would just come to Adelaide :-\
On the flipside, went to Batch Burger (second pic) and was not impressed. Pack was too tight and it was cooked way beyond what it should have been. Cheese fries looked nice but nothing to write home about either.

Port Noarlunga, it's about 30km south of the city.
